This was amazing, a true success story. Turned his life around, and did it with dignity. One thing I loved is he owned up to his crimes and actions, and never made excuses about the system or the punishment. Ian and too many of the interviewees want to wine about injustices, when they are the ones committing the crimes. This guy manned up, took his time, got clean, and is now an example of what living up to your potential looks and sounds like.
I remember meeting Matt way back in the day like in 1998 or 99, we had a similar circle of friends. He was on another level living out his minivan I think he got from his parents and it was full of all sorts of tweeker related stuff. I only met him once but let me tell you, you never forget him after meeting him once... especially back then. Glad to hear it worked out for you, Matt, if you're reading this...

Yo dude - you may have had to serve 6 years but you saved the life of at least one child and possibly more. Most of these Chomos escalate over time. Not only did you save many children from life long trauma- I have no doubt lives were saved as well. Most dudes in your position would have just tossed the safe in a dumpster.

I was a wildland firefighter and line EMT for 8 years. I worked with Calfire Con Crew, Wyoming Smoke Busters etc. I was always super impressed with how respectful these guys were (Now I was someone who would sneak them a can of chew out on the line because they were friendly and I didnt always know they were a con crew.) They also were always willing to take the shitty mop up jobs. I would take nearly any con crew over many of the local volunteer firefighters working a fire. I think they are just so greatful to be out. The ones I worked with had great altitudes.
Well, compared to being in a cell or block all day, going out to a fire call is like paradise.
My only friend I still have from my 'childhood' was in fire camp. Fire camp was THE place to be for him because it afforded him the most freedom with the least amount of drama.
@Whilom Forge Thats what the guys I talked to said. It pays one of the highest rates for a prison job and its the easiest way to do time
This is definitely my new favorite episode of the show, what an insane turn of events. Going from somebody that just wanted to keep the high alive and doing what one had to do for that goal, to grounding oneself to becoming one the most humble individuals I’ve heard speak.
Putting one’s freedom at even greater risk in order to protect a child he had never met strikes a deep chord in my heart, I wish this gentleman all the best in his years of freedom

Out of all the prison interviews I have watched. I often see that the person did not quiet learn their lesson. Wither by the way they describe the situation, subtle downplaying if the situations and other tell signs. This man right here truly regrets and understands what he did and is doing his best to rectify his mistakes. 👏👏👏👏👏

I almost didn’t watch this whole podcast because the beginning when he was talking about meth made my stomach turn due to my past experiences with that drug. I’m glad I came back to it and finished listening because, WOW, this might be my favorite one. I really like how Matt is such a humble and normal dude and didn’t try to make any part of his story come across as a “badass”(including his time in prison). He admitted his wrongs and was true with himself and the people listening. Thank you for this!
I saw a short, didn’t watch it all. I immediately went to Spotify and have been binge listening to the podcast. I did over seven years in prison for aggravated assault on a police officer. Been out almost five years, working the entire time and am a volunteer firefighter.
This guy is my age, I think he’s a wonderful, articulate man.
We all make mistakes; some just bigger than others. I hope he has an amazing life and continues his righteous path ♥️ God Bless

Probably one of the most inspirational interviews I’ve seen! He is true blue when it comes to making lemonade out of lemons, and he did not just save that one girl …I promise you that Chomo would have not stopped! He’s kind of a hero, at least in my eyes
Something Matt said I recognise & have to a degree . The anxiety PTSD hyper vigilant stuff I have & know others who have issues around this after getting out of the military . It took a few years to click with & only happened because I spoke to a counselor who was ex military aswell & I didn't/don't believe in counselling or psychiatrists etc.... she said the way we're trained is to be on alert / vigilant , ready to jump into something constantly all the time , I'd be in bed & hear something minor outside & I knew it's a possum climbing a tree but I'd have to get a torch & a bat & check the yard / perimeter check , couldn't help it . Hear a car at night that I didn't recognise as one of the neighbours / regular car on my street .... go outside & get a visual , look up & down the street & growing up in a group home added another element to the way I lived & protected / guarded my things .
Not prison I know , but in a way similar mindsets re-entering civilian life . IDK him saying that struck me .
Good on Matt for rehabilitating & growing as a person though. 👏👏

The mindset is ingrained into my being.
It hasn't always served me well. I never was a member of a union, but I always had the mentality.
I can take a lot of sh!t, but have low tolerance for bull sh!t.
Like my Pops always said "you take the good with the bad."
I cherish the union mentality I was raised with. Standing up for your fellow workers & being willing to make personal sacrafices for fellow workers is what this nation needs more of right now. BAD!

I am shocked by how many humans (millions?) have chosen a criminal path because of addiction and the need for large amounts of money to fuel these needs - and how large the percentage of people is that originally got these drugs from the 'health' system. I like your attitude and interview style, Ian.
Matt exactly articulated what it was for me trying Meth. Like coming home. I felt human for the first time I could remember. I never understood why people went crazy with it. I used 5 days per week for 2 years and the effects of the neurotoxin became apparent and unpredictable. I had to get out of the state to quit. Mental faculties are compromised with neuropathy in hands and leg recovered after a year....Every day I wake up wishing for another line. I really hope that doesn't follow me into the next life😅

I mean it felt good for a sec but then I got insane anxiety and couldn't even sit still in my apartment like a normal person and ending up wandering around with hunting knives ducted taped inside my pant legs like some kind of autistic Rambo. That wasn't after like one little line though, I orally consumed at least an eighth over a two day period. It did scare me away from doing it again though

I would like to hear more about his process of learning and getting his degree. Sounds really challenging
Having the money and time is the hardest part. Colleges are run like a business especially state colleges. If you can finance it, you have the opportunity. If your serious about it your first steps would be to apply for student loans. There will be an officer worker at almost any college you go to who's job is to help you know all the options. Once you look at that and you can find one that works to get you started you start your program. Once your in your program you handle business in class. You should them start applying for every grant you qualify for. I've known two people who went to school full time and then treated applying for grants like it's your job. Both people had 35-50k USD a year given to them from grants. If it's a grant....you don't have to pay them back. Wean yourself off the loans and onto the grants.
To give you some perspective they applied for grants 20 hrs a week. Non stop web searching and applying for that money.
Its awsome to hear a success story. I was this close so to being a convict as a young man and have close friends that were locked up. I know WAY mare people who cant make it outside than people who made it out.
When he first started talking about his childhood you could tell he was a bit nervous but quickly got over it… Great video, love his story!

This is a wake up call. I relate to this story because I'm at a point in my life where I'm doing almost the same thing as this guy.
Dealing with mental health issues and addiction and I'm not exactly sure how I ended up in my situation but this has me terrified of getting locked up.
Been talking to my therapist about it, and just recently looked up the legal consequences for my actions and its not great news.
So glad I found this video. Life has a way of rearranging my way of thinking and that's the best way to grow sometimes.
Thanks for this awesome interview, first full one I've watched of yours. I am very interested in his recovery group! I got a PRO against me last year due to a public mental health episode and it terrified me how easy it is to get sucked into and trapped within the legal system, especially since I was in a very fragile unstable place. I have goals to rehabilitate our current vengeance system, and want to help recovering offenders with releasing shame and guilt ❤️ love your work so much. Gives me hope for myself and others ☀️

The Sad, and Outrageous things about this, are that a thief can spend his entire life in prison, where the child abuser, is set free after a minimal sentence, for a crime that truly deserves life in prison. And he will be free in the world to do ? Again, behind closed doors,.... how many more times,....That is,...... if "Karma" never comes knocking.
Although, you are not a hero for being criminal sir,..,..YOU ARE A HERO for taking action, + giving the evidence to the police, and more so, for risking a true life sentence, to make sure that that monster was held accountable for his actions to a child. The Whole town + country should of stood behind you, and been up in arms, doing anything they could to help you, at the very least for a reduced sentence. NO amount of material possessions, or grudges, are worth, the the life or safety of a, or many children.
And you,...risked Your Life, to help make sure that this hopefully never happens to any child, by him, again.

Had a guy come into a party once at my house back in my dumb days. We weren't doing any of that, but apparently he was because he spent an hour in our bathroom. The day after our toilet didn't work. Found out later he was convinced there were agents in our bushes, so he flushed his stash. Then he calmed down and tried to retrieve it . He didn't achieve retrieval but he did achieve totally wrecking our toilet internals lol.

Meth has to be the worst drug possible. I know all drugs are bad but meth is a different level
Look up krokadil, meth doesn't have anything on that lol. It may just be a poorly made version of an opioid that in its pure form, isn't anywhere near as dangerous, the street version called "krokadil" is insanely scary! From a pharmacology standpoint, meth really isn't that bad. Alcohol is equal to or worse in terms of mental and physical damage but because of the strange things a small group of users do after staying awake for days, it's looked at as some crazy drug. There's really no such thing as a "bad drug", just poorly made drugs or drugs that can be addictive. Most, if not all drugs have some medicinal use, they've just been phased out because of newer drugs that either have less negative side effects, less risk of overdose or are considered to be less addictive. Meth is just an amphetamine (adderall) molecule with 1 extra carbon atom and 2 extra hydrogen atoms, that's it. Methamphetamine HCL is actually available as a prescription drug in America for ADHD, only difference between that prescription pill and crystal meth is the pill was made by a licensed pharmaceutical company. Before being made into a pill, it's the exact same drug that's sold on the streets only without all the potential cuts and impurities.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro meth but the media has turned it into this crazy drug while completely ignoring that it's also available as a prescription drug too and the majority of the people prescribed it likely aren't running around stealing catalytic converters or losing teeth while hallucinating for days on end... The saying "everything in moderation" has never been more true than with drugs. The only difference between a medicine and a poison is the dosage. It may sound crazy at first but after years of studying pharmacology, I've realized that drugs are neither inherently good or bad, they're whatever the user makes them. One man's medicine is another man's crippling addiction.

I accidentally tried meth one time and it was AMAZING. Tried to get more from a friend's husband, and I had sorta convinced my friend that it'd be a good idea for me to try it. Her husband, who had just shot half a gram of fent looked at me, needle still in his arm, and said "No. Don't ever start." Kinda feel bad now, but my friend was trying to convince him for a little bit afterwards that it'd be good, because they weren't gonna get me high and then try to rob me, like some of the other fiends around us. For anyone wondering, no I never actually tried any after that.
(As for accidentally trying it, picture a small bedroom with no ventilation and 6 people smoking, while you sit in the corner and just chill with them, listen to music, and talk. I was up for 3 days straight, afterwards.)
He is exactly right in my prison rats sex offenders don't walk with convicts at all like he said you don't slip through if you got those charges either you check in or you get beat til you go
