Ted Koppel will always be the number #1 all-time best overnight reporter on Nightline to me.
Even after past midnight, of course.

Viewpoint really was groundbreaking. Few if any television news programs took the time to not only examine a story at length but to give the public a chance to ask questions directly. Even now, with social media, etc 'town halls' have become of staple of cable news.

The intro from 1990 to 1997 is my most memorable intros growing up.

I think it’s one of the coolest intros for a news show I’ve ever seen. The way they announce the date so dramatically with that ticking clock in the background… gives me chills.

ABC News Nightline had begun as "The Iran Crisis America Held Hostage" in late 1979 at the beginning of the Iranian hostage crisis. By March 24, 1980, it had gone from special late-night news program to regular late-night news program and Ted Koppel became the official host and the name changed to "Nightline"
It would not be until late 1997 that "Nightline" would have its own theme music.
On November 22, 2005, Ted Koppel, then 65 years old, retired and the single-subject topic format changed to a many-topic subject format. New hosts were Introduced.
The show has been moved to an hour later than it used to be because of the time change with "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" since 2013.
Ted Koppel is currently 82 years old. He is on television, sometimes on NBC News, at times and elsewhere as well.
The show has featured expanded news of the day, politicians, religious leaders, entertainers, late night world news coverage, and the venerable Viewpount specials that engaged the public in an original form of televised social media.
"Nightline" continues to be the intelligent choice in late night television.
ABC News has done well with the show.

@@mwdiphone Ted Koppel had appeared on NBC News several years after retiring from ABC News and the "Nightline" late-night news program he anchored from its beginning in 1980 through 2005. He has since appeared on The Discovery Channel before more recently resurfacing on the CBS News program "Sunday Morning". He is currently 83 years old.

@@samuelcarrasquillo4590 As "America Held Hostage", which was its name in late 1979 through March 1980, it was based in Washington, D.C. That was about the Iranian hostage crisis in which the American embassy had been taken over by terrorists, initially taking everyone there hostage, having reduced that to 52 Americans and went from November 1979 through January 1981. When the program became "Nightline" in March 1980, it continued to be based in Washington, D.C. and continued to be until November 2005 after Ted Koppel retired. Then it went to New York City where it continues to be.
