Mark Reizen at 79- The fearful moment (Tchaikovsky)

- The great Ukrainian-born Jewish bass Mark Reizen (1895-1992) sings Tchaikovsky's "Strashnaya minuta" ("The fearful moment"), Op.28, No.6 (text also by Tchaikovsky). Recorded 1974, with A. Makarov at the piano.
Even at age 79, the ever-youthful and spry Reizen sings with beautiful control of dynamics and legato, putting to shame many singers half his age. Eleven years later, Reizen celebrated his 90th birthday by performing the role of Prince Gremin in "Evgeniy Onegin" (at the Bolshoi Theater)- a feat that appears to be unequalled in the history of opera.

I sent this recording to my fiancee in St. Petersburg, who I miss very much. I worked on the dacha, I taught in the higher music college in Krasnodar. This combination of Mark's singing, his accompanist, the setting, the light it is affecting me and has saved me from despair in the Lord. Takoi slug on, what a faithful servant, what a missive from God, life is so rich, you don't need much to be happy and to live long. Oh but how i cannot imagine the suffering that this man must have seen.

I am struggling to find the word that sums up Reisen's performances - it reaches sooo deep into my soul - (physically into the stomach area!) - I can't decide if it's Russian music or Reisens performance but I find it "eleigaic". Does anyone else have the same reaction? God how wonderful RUclips is for this sort of thing!

This is spectacular singing for any age - to know that he was 79 is absolutely stunning. His voice is so beautiful and the control is amazing. I love the softer high notes that he places in such a perfect place. This is really a miraculous video. I don't know how you are khan - but I want to thank you for sharing something priceless.
