One of my favourite union songs and still up to date. Thanks a lot, Seth. In "The Scab", Jack London famously wrote that "After God had finished the rattlesnake, the toad, and the vampire, he had some awful substance left with which he made a scab. A scab is a two-legged animal with a corkscrew soul, a water brain, a combination backbone of jelly and glue. Where others have hearts, he carries a tumor of rotten principles. When a scab comes down the street, men turn their backs and angels weep in heaven, and the devil shuts the gates of hell to keep him out..."
My father was an union man. He worked for the auto industry, they striked in the 90s. We marched the picket lines for our rights. We won. Stand strong strikers, we stand with you!!
Seth you have a powerful voice and a big following, it brings the brightest smile to my face to see you using it to support worker's rights. I believe I commented on the tiktok of this you posted as well, but this song is very important to me, and this means a lot.
If you stand with a coal miner, you should stand with a writer. One is not more worthy than the other. Does the miner not benefit from the advocacy of the writer, and vice versa? Solidarity is solidarity. Forever.
It's been a while since I've wanted to listen to Pete on my way to work. I enjoy a good cover song, but I'm not enjoying work right now. I've never been pro or anti union but I'm 30 now and tired of getting fucked over by some corporate pimp.
For decades everyone in Hollywood got rich and looked down on us humble folk who work normal jobs, now their industry is facing the same sort of mechanization that they mocked others for resisting. Every member of the Screen Writer's Guild could get on a ship bound for Mars tomorrow and I would never notice it in my life. AI is going to replace all of them in ten years regardless of how this strike shakes out. That goes double for the members of the Screen Actor's Guild. #learntocode
Can you name some of these individuals (working class actors and writers) who mocked other working class individuals? And the thing about AI is that it cannot be trained on AI material. It triggers a simplification loop, or reduction, such that all creative diversity disappears in the outcome. So human writers will always be needed to train new models at the very least. But all workers deserve to have their livelihoods protected, no matter what industry. In-fighting among the working class will only serve the interests of the executives. Also, the desired outcome of the strike is to ban the use of AI to replace working members without at least compensation for their likeness so your premise that the outcome is erroneous is not correct.
My Great pawpaw from Scotland proved Union. Pawpaw was union. I'm Union now. There's a lot I dislike about the Union. ngl. But a Union is better than nothing
only the union can save our class from the bosses unjust hand. Now is the time to fight for a worker's and farmers party. So we can have a voice in politics. We can strike but the real power is building a vanguard party leading to a revolutionary society where capitalism is dead and gone
Comparing l.a, I assume references the writers, to coal miners is insanely insulting. Lousy work and entitlement with great pay vs “we are dieing at least pay us so our families can hit and we will literally fight with our bare hands on this hill.”
A great performance, even if I don't stand with the unions at all. Which is not to say I stand with the studios either. Way things have been going in Hollywood, to borrow paraphrased verbiage from The Little Platoon in one of his various appearances on Critical Drinker's Open Bar, I'm perfectly happy to sit back and watch both sides lose.

If you take requests, I think a Seth Staton Watkins version of “There is Power in a Union” (Billy Bragg) would be amazing 🥹

You should do Solidarity Forever and Billy Bragg's Internationale.
He has done solidarity
My personal opinion. The original internationale ( English 1935 ) would be better

Song hasn't been this relevant since the day it was written
