just got a volvo 850 97 cool car. changed belt and turned them into string confetti slapping the hood. old belt kept working great because it was missing a lane. idler pulley was tweaked over belt walked over one tooth on alternator pulley. knew this pump was easy volvo is race stuff, should be easier than any one. turned out had a nut on the bottom alternator bolt acting like a spacer when should be bolted into the plate. lol this helped a lot thanks
Hi Robert, my PS pump is leaking. Dripping to the alternator. I was wondering where most problems are coming from? Is it the O-ring seal? Is there any other seals that can be replaced?
I can't see where it's leaking from, from here. However, if the pump itself is leaking you will need to replace the pump or rebuild it. I have no experience with rebuilding power steering pumps.
hi Rob got the pump on! I used 3/4 breaker bar and I found flat plastic clip for the tensioner. 1/4 inch deep 12 mm was tightsmall hands helped. the high pressure line was the hard part the valve turned in pump couldn't get line appart so I did it last. i unscrewed pump from line then used 7/8 box wrench to break line appart. me and you all day
Robert, thank you so much for your instructions. Please, tell me, can I drive without fluid in power steering? I have Volvo 850 and one of lines (oil pipe) is leaking. May I use my car without fluid before I will replace this line? Is it dangerous for pump? Thank you.
Robert, can you make a video on a power steering rebuild of these pumps? Or at least on the disassebly. Mine just started having a bearing noise recently.
Excellent video. I did the job in two half days, due to inclement weather. I would like to suggest one important optional step. My old steering pump did not slide up and out after all the bolts were removed. It would not budge. To complete the removal of my pump, I needed to loosen the lower long clamping bolt on the pump bracket.
Is this related to a power steering rack? Looking at a 2000 S70 and listing says it has a power steering Leak and I’m just trying to make if I do buy the car I’m learning the right things for the fix
Robert I took this all apart about 6 months ago and I'm having problem s on how the triangle bracket goes. Can you help me to figure it out? Thanks for your videos.Ryan
Was changing the AC compressor, and the plastic head broke from the power steering reservoir that the small hose connects to. The one you drip the oil from to the cloth. Is there a way to change the reservoir, or do I have to change the whole pump?
The bearing is going on my 1998 S70, going to replace the pump on saturday. This job seems easy enough but it looks like it'll be a pain my ass because i have massive hands and those look like some tight spaces
Hi Robert, Thanks for posting these excellent videos! I've referred to many over the years. I currently have a 1997 960. Looks like the same or similar to the pump you're replacing. Do you know if there is a pressure valve or check valve on these pumps? It should be a mechanism with a spring. If so, where is that located on the pump?
I have s70 98 base. I want to change fluid in power steering. Is there a quick way to drain it all? If not, any rules about mixing fluids? I have no idea what's inside, the color is yellowish... Thanks
Disconnect the return and plug the bottom of the reservoir. Start the car and add fluid as it pumps out the old. Most people just use a turkey baster to suck out the old and add new a few times until all looks replaced.
How did you get the pulley off the pump, once you had it out? It seems like on mine (97 850GLT) I cannot get to the second fluid connector to get a wrench on it without getting the pulley off first.
yeah, I have a set of 3 jaw pullers, but the center on the pulley is keyed for a large metric hex bit, and with those 2 large openings on the pulley, they fit a pulley holding tool that I have, I figured I would soak it with penetrant for a day and then (very carefully) hit it with an impact gun, and see if the center bolt backs out.
Robert DIY BTW, thank you for your service to the community. (I assume you are on Mathew's Volvo Site, as well). I just watched your front seat removal video prior to removing the front seats from this same car. Unfortunately, the seats mildewed in the dampness of my current garage, so I'm stripping the 97 850GLT wagon down for parts. I've been using it as parts car, anyway, for the last year to keep the 96 850GLT on the road. That's the sleeper keeper, anyways. M56 manual trans in the sedan chassis. If I swap out the engine for one with a turbo, big brake and lowering kit, yum...
Yes I do troll Matt's site as well. You're welcome and I do enjoy learning and helping. Anytime you are going to store a car you should put dry rice in it.
I don't really understand the serpentine belt part. what are you pinning it to? and how did you get the belt back on after you bolted the pump into place? the video skipped that part.
+Robert DIY I checked the comments section and couldn't find anything pertaining to the serpentine belt but I have since watch your video on the serpentine belt and it helps quite tremendously
what could cause my power steering fluid to turn brown in color? Also, the bearing is squeaking and my pump is groaning. Is this likely a full pump replacement or what else could go wrong to cause the pump to groan other than low fluid levels?
Robert, getting some stiffness every so often making turns. Not leaking any fluid so I'm going to go with a drain and fill and flush... Do you think random stiffness might point to something else? Thanks, brother!
+Robert DIY thanks for the reply... these cars keep on giving, don't they! Should I replace any of the hoses since I'm in there or should I be ok? (170k) Hope you're having safe travels out there!
I drained and filled the reservoir three times (using Castrol High Mileage ATF) and it's certainly better. But it's not good enough. Each time, I was surprised at how dark the ATF got... There's some "gunk" on the tip of my turkey baster that tells me something is going on. I'm going to swap it out. On a scale of 1-10, how hard is it to take off and reinstall the pulley and reservoir?
Hi, just changed the power stering pump, i fill the reservoir up againg and tried on, but still my stering weel its to heavy like it don't have the hidraulic assistence, what else could be wrong, i have changed it in the first place because the steering wheel go to heavy on the turns or when i park the car. Thanks your videos where very usefull to me this days.
Hey man. Did u make the block for the tension pulley? It’s such a simple little thing but I don’t have the material to make one. Any ideas where I could buy one or something that will work in place? I already bought a tensioner set and it doesn’t work (too small) and I don’t want to waste another $30 buying the right one
hey robert, recently my 98 volvo s70 steering wheel became more heavy, there is a grinding sound that comes from the wheel whenever i turn. Do you think flushing the power steering fluid and refilling would resolve the issue?
I popped open the power steering fluid box and the level looked good. I may try to remove the old fluid with a turkey baster and replace with some fresh power steering fluid
Hi Robert. The steering on my XC90 just became very stiff. I have full power steering liquid and no leaks. The Volvo dealer said I could trying spraying PB Blaster to eliminate corrosion from the steering. Thing is, I don't know where to spray it? Which joints and where to find them. Can you help?
Sorry, I don't understand. There;s no reason you should have heard of it. It's British and my business email. Anyhow, I talked again to the Volvo dealer (sells previously owned Volvos) who said to spray PB Blaster at the bottom of the steering column. I can't see any obvious place to spray. The steering is really stiff. As I mentioned, the power steering liquid reservoir is full, so it's not a matter of not enough power steering liquid.
+Minster Homes I have never heard of spraying PB Blaster on a steering joint to loosen up the steering. Chances are that the pump is failing, but hey, I know very little.
i have an alinement problem with the serpentine belt.seems pump and idler pullys are about 1/8 inch out of aline with rest of pullys.cant figure out why.any suggestions on this?
Hey robert how are you? I have a 2001 xc70 , noticed groaning and wheel is hard to turn. Thinking of doing a flush however in manual it states minumal info as far as what fluid to use. My manual states ATF, quality.. should I use ATF or CHF 11s or CHF 202? ATF sure is cheaper ..
+Robert DIY Thanks Robert, for getting back. I will check that out. However I still need to do a flush since I have never done it since owning the car. Ive owned the car over 2 years now knowing that which kind of fluid would you recommend I use?
I have a 99 s70 and after about a hour of driving I hear a winding noise in my steering. it get really loud would u say that's what it is. power steering pump?

Great videos Robert! Have had a problem with power steering fluid leaking on my 1998 XC station wagon. Had a slow leak that "blew out". Tracked it to the fluid line going into the power steering pump. O-ring with chewed up. Replaced it and hoped it would stop leak. Slowed it down but did not stop it. Now thinking it is the pump. Sound right? After watching your video would like to try that fix myself...if it involves dropping subframe...will need to let the professionals due that.
Robert DIY Sorry for confusion. First time posting to something like this. Main question is...if I can't stop leak on line going INTO pump with new o ring on fitting...do you think it is the pump itself that needs replacing and not the line?
I have a 2004 Volvo XC70. It started to make that groaning sound when turning. I noticed I was low on steering fluid so I got some of that but now the noise came back. Can that be the hose? I don't have the money for a major fix. :(
Hey Robert while looking at power steering parts online I keep seeing power steering pump filters. Are they a aftermarket or extra filter that doesn't come stock? I have a 95 850
I did the replacement today exactly the way you did and the bran new pump is makeing the exact same noise as the old pos pump was makeing.......Im to the point where i want to take a hammer to the thing... but now i just want to bypass it.. the noise is driveing me crazy. I dont care if i have power stearing, im all for gettin a work out when i drive around.
Hey Robert. The user manual of my 2000 V70 says I don't have to change the power steering fluid at all. Also my mechanic at home says I don't have to change it. However I have heard that its a good idea to change it every 4 or 5 years since the old fluid can become abrasive and damage the power steering pump. Do you think its a good idea to change the fluid for this reason or no?
Hi Robert, im from Malaysia and using volvo 850 t5. Always a fan of your videos, i have an issue, my steering wheel make noise when its cold start, but when start few mins the engine is warmer the noise is gone. But on the reservoir it loose oil slowly and i need to fill it up eveytime with power steering stop leak oil. What would be the issue here ya ?
Hi Robert. Big fan of your videos. I'm stumped with a problem on my 1996 960 that I hope you can help with. I just replaced all four tires. I noticed immediately a strange new behavior in the steering. When the car is stopped and running and I turn the wheel (either direction) it is fine, and if I'm moving above a crawl and turn the wheel everything is fine. But if I'm moving at a crawl (parallel parking speed), the steering "shudders". I got an alignment done, and caster is out of spec due to worn parts, but everything else is in spec. And I checked the steering fluid, which is clean and full. Any ideas?
Yeah, I'm stumped, too. Do you know if these pumps are modulated based on vehicle speed? Perhaps it is getting enough pressure to turn the wheels when I'm stopped, and it doesn't need much pressure when I'm moving about 5mph or faster, but between >0 and 5 mph maybe the pump is not getting enough hydrolic boost?
Hi Robert -- love your videos. My son and I have spent time working on a 93 850. it has a power steering leak in a rusted section of the line above the near the rack. Can't even get a wrench in the line. Maybe could get a saws all on it if it was on a lift but even if I did will it be possible to replace the line without dropping the subframe as you mentioned in an earlier comment? Much as I hate to, am wondering if its time to move on with this vehicle.
Dan Murphy Mine has leaked since I got it. About 8 oz every 1000 miles or so. If it's leaking much more than that, you may need to soak it down with some PB Blaster or something and try to get it loose, replace the line, and go from there.
Robert DIY Thank you for the quick reply. The lines are rusted out --feed line doesn't hold any fluid. Any tips to remove the connections from under neath without a lift? Do we need to drop subframe to get a wrench on the line connections at the rack? Any additional thoughts greatly appreciated!
As stated, mine has leaked since I got my car. As much work as I do on cars, my cars, the fact that I have not tried to fix my leak should tell you that I'm seriously afraid to attack it. I guess you can purchase some wrenches that will help you reach the line bolts but it may damage more stuff. You have to be prepared to replace the rack if it comes down to it.
Hi, Robert. I'm wondering if you know the size of the o-ring needed a 1993 940 Volvo sedan. Apperarentally the dealer doesn't sell just the o-ring and the pump is already replaced just missing the o-ring. P.S. My Dad said the o-ring might even be in the wrong place but I'm not sure as it's his car & he is the one who did the originally. Thanks, Best Regards. Josh.
Swapped out my old pump with the new, using this awesome video and tutorial. just FYI users may need to watch the serpentine belt tensioner video to see how to take off tension, it is not explained in this vid.. obviously I had a blown seal/bearing from the looks of this photo...... goo.gl/photos/CHAwBumg1tqzjsTi6 I went ahead and did a flush while I was adding the new coolant, flushed until I saw clear fluid, turned the wheel several times back and forth while doing it, I have been told milky=water , brown= burnt. Got it flushed til the fluid ran clear.... My problem is I am still having some very strong vibrations in the steering wheel while driving down the road, and the front end almost feels out of alignment because of this knocking/ vibration. You feel it more when you are starting to speed up and slowing down, in the 10MPH- 30MPH range, most definitely in the steering wheel . I'm not sure if there is something else I need to do after installing a new pump, or did we do some type of additional damage to the steering system that was caused by driving the vehicle for about 1000 miles after the pump was shot? Is it necessary to bleed the line of air? The instructions that came with the new pump mentioned something about bleeding, could this be the problem? Or are there any other configurations that I need to be concerned with after putting on a new pump? just looking for a few pointers, I'd say it's ok to drive close trips but I won't let my wife take it long ways until I figure out the problem.
Vibrations could be a bunch of things: tires unbalanced, control arm bushings, spring seats, etc. Sounds like you did it right by getting rid of as much bad fluid as possible. Power steering pumps replace the hard steering and the groans when you turn the wheel.
In this video.. I inderstsnd you have done tons of these.. but there's no way someone who never had done this before, they would be lost after the 1sr 15 seconds.. my positive criticism is slow down.. people depend on these videos so they can A..learn.. B. Fix they own car without paying correctly a** mechanic shops. I kbi ur just trying to put out as much content as possible but every person from a pro..to a 15 yr old kid trying to help his single mom fix they only car.. point is.. your videos are very helpful but instead of trying to get that video out on time, think about who is going to be watching it. Every car is the same but totally different at the same time. Keep that into consideration my friend. God bless
Ralph, are you high? You can slow the video down and play it over and over again. If you can't follow these instructions, get a job good enough to pay a mechanic.
HI ROBERT, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! GREAT WORK AND YOUR DETAILED EXPLANATIONS HELP ME A LOT TO UNDERSTAND THE REPAIR PROCESS AND THE WHOLE SYSTEM MUCH BETTER. I LOVE , NOT JUST DOING STUFF AS BEING TOLD, I LIKE TO UNDERSTAND HOW THIGS ARE CONNECTED/ HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER.it would have been a great idea to show the wobbly pulley before exchanging the power steering pump. ;) to show what people should become aware of which could be dangerous if not functioning. ;) educating the eyes. HUGS KRIS
hi robert, i wonder if you can help me ;) my check engine light came on. I saw just 2 days ago that my PRE-HEATER HOSE has a crack . Is it possible that this broken pre-heater hose is responsible for the check engine light, or what would you recommend to check on? thanks a lot! kris
@@csebastian71Were you ever able to resolve your issue? Sounds like you have a leak either somewheres in the lines to the pump or your power steering rack itself. If it's just foam in the power steering pump reservoir, then you're pulling air into the system from a small leak somewhere.
I hate these jobs. alt or P steeing pump no room to work with large MAN hands... is there a piece on the inside you can adjust the pressure on the unit so it turns quicker (like drilling the hole out larger on some models of p steering pumps). mine jambs up when Turning but all parts are NEW ..the rack, the pump ,tie rod ends, ect but still has an issue but when it rains heavy they steering is smooth as it should be??? can half shafts jamb up to effect this as both boots are torn but at 23 degrees its not a right now project....
AwakeDude911 I doubt it. Likely something in the rack. May not have been built well. Some pumps are crap as well. Every once in a while, if I accelerate hard into a turn my steering will whine until I shut it all down.
You just saved my road trip. In Robert we trust!
Cool, thanks for watching

Hi Robert, my PS pump is leaking. Dripping to the alternator. I was wondering where most problems are coming from? Is it the O-ring seal? Is there any other seals that can be replaced?
I can't see where it's leaking from, from here. However, if the pump itself is leaking you will need to replace the pump or rebuild it. I have no experience with rebuilding power steering pumps.
No actually I learned a lot from your videos. I even wasn't aware that the reservoir can be removed from the pump. Thank you sir
hi Rob got the pump on! I found a way to pull the tensioner with a pipe wrench. I'm using a 10-inch pipe wrench with the adjustable jaw flipped around.
Nice.
Robert, thank you so much for your instructions. Please, tell me, can I drive without fluid in power steering? I have Volvo 850 and one of lines (oil pipe) is leaking. May I use my car without fluid before I will replace this line? Is it dangerous for pump? Thank you.

Advice on replacing seals of power steering pump? The kit of seals only cost $8 vs a used pump costing $40. Is it possible to do?
Post a link to the seals if you don’t mind. I’m interested in searching out the shaft seal if I can find a replacement part.

I have a 2004 Volvo XC70. It started to make that groaning sound when turning. I noticed I was low on steering fluid so I got some of that but now the noise came back. Can that be the hose? I don't have the money for a major fix. :(
Chirality Raven Is the level low again?
Robert DIY No it's totally full now.... which is what had me thinking it's a pump because it shouldn't have been low to begin with.
Well, the car is 11 years old. Leaks start and they get worse over time. However, the groaning noise at low speeds is usually spring seats.
Hey Robert while looking at power steering parts online I keep seeing power steering pump filters. Are they a aftermarket or extra filter that doesn't come stock? I have a 95 850
I have no idea
hi i have volvo 850 1994 i wanna change the steering fluid do you have any advice? thanks
+Francis Bonga not really. A lot of people suck it out with a turkey baster.
Robert DIY oh ok then fill it up again with new fluid?? that simple?
Robert DIY thank you so much
Yes, do it 3 or 4 times.
Robert DIY 3 to 4 times of what?
I did the replacement today exactly the way you did and the bran new pump is makeing the exact same noise as the old pos pump was makeing.......Im to the point where i want to take a hammer to the thing... but now i just want to bypass it.. the noise is driveing me crazy. I dont care if i have power stearing, im all for gettin a work out when i drive around.
Did you find out what the problem was?
Who will pay for it if it fails?
Fluid is cheaper than a pump!
I agree.
It's leaking somewhere.
Robert DIY what if theres no leaking to be found. What else should i check on ?
+Dzikri Adam so you think the oil is drying out? Or someone is taking some out little by little?
Any ideas?
+Joe Hafner can you feel it in the steering wheel?
+Robert DIY Yes. It feels similar to a failing steering pump (from my experience with other cars).
sounds like a pump to me but I really don't know.
My guess would be engine speed.
Robert DIY Thank you!
Josh.
+Joshdragon Van Drechsler no I don't.
looks like the bearing was worn out on that ps pump pulley. everybody just puts new pumps on these days because it's cheaper.
Michael Sackstein Easier as well.
Swapped out my old pump with the new, using this awesome video and tutorial. just FYI users may need to watch the serpentine belt tensioner video to see how to take off tension, it is not explained in this vid.. obviously I had a blown seal/bearing from the looks of this photo...... goo.gl/photos/CHAwBumg1tqzjsTi6
I went ahead and did a flush while I was adding the new coolant, flushed until I saw clear fluid, turned the wheel several times back and forth while doing it, I have been told milky=water , brown= burnt.
Or are there any other configurations that I need to be concerned with after putting on a new pump? just looking for a few pointers, I'd say it's ok to drive close trips but I won't let my wife take it long ways until I figure out the problem.
am I supposed to bleed the line when finished?
I like your videos but you kinda went too fast on this one.
You can slow down the speed in your settings.
HUGS KRIS
OK.
hi robert, i wonder if you can help me ;) my check engine light came on. I saw just 2 days ago that my PRE-HEATER HOSE has a crack . Is it possible that this broken pre-heater hose is responsible for the check engine light, or what would you recommend to check on? thanks a lot! kris
I think my power steering pump is going bad on Silver Bullet.
Probably the AC compressor.
@@RobertDIY The liquid was low and when I filled it, it continued to foam.
