DO NOT muscle through having no power steering fluid. I did for 2 years and the other day the pump seized, threw the pulley, and broke the serpentine belt. NOT FUN. Get that leak fixed! Lesson learned. Thank you Jay for being awesome as always
By no power steering fluid do you mean actually none like the car wasn’t started or was it just tight steering? Because my steering on my s60 2007 is getting tight and I’m not sure why
same happened to me too , when you lose one pulley you lose everything ,had a $600 tow from alabama to atl. Its now happen again, have a leaking rackand cant justify a new one on 01. Anyone know if you can get a shorter belt and just bypass the pump pulley altogether
Good guide with some good tips. One thing to note is on at least my 2007 s60 R the belt tensioner ended up being a t50. and there is VERY little room to get at it. There is a special tool you can buy but in a pinch I just used some vice grips on my t50 socket. Worked well enough. Also the high pressure line is a 8mm bolt on those as well. Either way same/similar process. Get your o-ring for the high pressure line when you buy the pump ($0.28) vs the 3 dollar one I had to pick up at my local volvo dealer.
Great video..I have a question, what is the part number of that pump....the original part number is 30776395, however, volvo no longer makes that model...the new part number is 36000267 but I have read several threads stating that (the retaining bolt position is much closer to the pressure port on part 3600267) and will not fit my series car. My car is a 2007 S80 4.4L V8
Interesting that you purged the air with the wheels off ground. Would it work as well with the wheels on the ground and engine on? Is it only a matter of not running the pump with air in it?
@@fcpeuro Factory service manual for '05-'09 says to turn it lock to lock with engine off several times and top off, start engine, and then turn it lock to lock *slowly* 10 times while keeping it at the end position at least 2 seconds. Says nothing about wheels being off ground.

@@MrCarGuy It's real hard to turn the wheel with the tires on the ground with the car off.
Thanks, very helpful video. I replaced the pump and reservoir. I'm still getting a small amount of hard turning, mostly at low speed. Does that point to the rack? Also, I dropped one of the pump mounting bolts. Does anyone know what size/thread replacement bolt I'm looking for? Thanks.
At the 2:55 mark, we are instructed to use a 15mm wrench to loosen the high pressure hose from the pump, but it's clearly a 16mm box wrench being used. Other than this, great video.
Hi that’s pretty clean job I have s60 2004 2.5t Very heavy steering and feels weird when turning feels like light and heavy same time I don’t know if you know what can be the problem? Thanks
Jason - thank you for this and all your videos. They are always well done and have really helped me keep my 02 S60 going. My only suggestion would be to include torque specs for fasteners as it looks like you rely on the German standard gudundteit. The PS on my 02 no longer provides any assistance. Failure was abrupt. Fluid level is good. No noise from the pump. I'd really appreciate any ideas on how to diagnose the fault, as I can't afford to throw parts at it. Thanks for any and all ideas.
Hello Kevin, It's most likely the pump but the only way to diagnose would be to get a pressure gauge and tap into the line to get a reading. Also, be sure to check the condition of the hoses going to the rack, make sure they're not kinked, obstructed, or pinched.
Hello Jason, Thanks a tonne for this video it was an excellent step-by-step tutorial and also helped me make sure I had the right tools on hand to do the job. (ie: a T-60 bit for the tensioner pulley.) The only thing not mentioned was the need to use synthetic fluid when refilling the system in a 2005 or later model.
Hi, I did exactly what you instructed in this video been a great help thank you so much. Oh, I have a rip boot on rack and pinion bar this started the leak would you know if power steering flows thru the boot has wide end and the narrow side is where it's ripped that's the end that leaks.
Hi Marco, there shouldn't be power steering fluid coming out of the steering rack boot. The boot is to keep out dirt and other road debris. If there is fluid leaking out of there that would indicate that the seals inside the steering rack have failed and started leaking.
Hope this helps those who are still looking. Sorry for the delayed response. www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/S60/Power-Steering-Hose-O~Ring/?year=2004&m=1279&e=2105&t=5&b=5&d=586&v=97

I have s70 98 base. I want to change fluid in power steering. Is there a quick way to drain it all? If not, any rules about mixing fluids? I have no idea what's inside, the color is yellowish... Thanks
Hi, you can use a turkey baster, or better a siphon/fluid exchange pump to suck all the fluid out from the reservoir. You do NOT want to use anything labeled Power Steering Fluid, the 98 S70 uses ATF which is Automatic Transmission Fluid for the power steering. Usually red in color. Suck the old fluid out and refill it with ATF. Leave the cap off, start the car and turn the wheel all the way in one direction and then all the way in the other to bleed the system. The level may drop after this so top it off and then reinstall the cap. This might not get ALL of the old fluid out so you can repeat the whole process again, but you can judge that based on how the fluid looks after it's been run for a while. If it looks clean you should be good to go!
I notice that the tension wheel sounds noisy I think the bearings are bad I can just change the wheel all do I need to take whole tension bracket off ?
Hi Luba, while I recommend you replace the whole tensioner, you can replace just the tensioner pulley, which you can find here: www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-drive-belt-tensioner-pulley-gates-8627994
Thats going to depend on where you take it and what they charge for labor, as well as wether or not they allow you to supply your own parts. You'll want to contact local shops to possibly get a quote
Hi Hassan, does the power steering pump make noise when you turn the wheel? If so, it's possible the pump is failing and needs to be replaced, I would also check the tension on the belt to make sure that is not slipping.
Hi! The reservoir could be cracked and leaking power steering fluid, as well as sucking in air, both of which will cause eventual damage to your power steering pump.
Was just told today that some aftermarkets are selling the power steering pum WITHOUT the pulley and you have to switch them out. If you break the pulley while trying to remove it, you're Out of Luck.
May as well use the ratchet over the 14mm bolt, like here at 19:20 ruclips.net/video/Kg-lsya-LiY/видео.html . Don't forget to place back the small bracket over the metal line nut, don't discard this bracket, it keeps the nut from loosening.
