In this #devlog, I neglect porting my game Bridges & Docks onto consoles. Instead, I add new warriors to my next island game! Thanks for following my self-employment journey creating video games as a solo #indieDev.
I want a unit that plays a lyre so I can listen to some sweet tunes while I take control of the world.
Maybe you don’t see this but it would be cool to-
-make your island
-press battle button or something
-ships of enemies or from land, come to attack your village
-you have soldiers you can move around and defend /attack while this is happening
I'd say elevation differences should be important. E.g. shoot farther and swing harder from elevation advantage. Perhaps units can't jump higher than 1 tile. Additionally, all the bridges look like natural choke points, where a couple of units could hold off a larger enemy force. I'm right away thinking of Bad North.
3:37
being honest they looks good at least the right one
Oh neat, I had just finished your interview with Thomas Brush and this popped up on my feed. Looking great!
This gives me strong "Bad North" vibes
Yeah try not to go too similar
Reminds me of Populus. Maybe have soldiers be part of a group, and you give orders to that group (not single soldiers). And a command for them to return home and continue doing their settler activities when no enemy is around anymore.
BUG : in 4:37 look at the bottom of the video you have something similar to z fighting ( im a web dev ) , in the ground edge next to the water where it is connected to the lower ground
hope it was useful
I've been catching up on the progress the past couple of days, and I'm loving the look of this. The aesthetic is right up my alley. Would be cool to have the characters interact with each other in subtle ways, perhaps sounds or speech when they walk into each other or other sound effects from them to add to the feeling of life on the island.
Also, kudos for what you've achieved so far with this project. I've found a new source of inspiration in that you manage to make this progress and continue uploading videos, all whilst raising a child and still looking sane and normal! This will be my case as of September also, so it is reassuring to see 😅
Looking great, Thomas! Curious to know if you have experimented with getting the whole crowd of soldiers to interact with the beacon - e.g. they all head as close to it as they can, or they all try and attack a particular building/etc.
+1 for adding bacon
I'm not personally enthusiastic about the new direction the game, but I'm sure many are. It just feels like the game is now catering to a different audience, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hopefully there is still a sandbox or creative mode to keep the game cozy. I wishlisted for a cozy game, not a tactical one.
This is all so familiar to me, the procedural terrain, the navmesh system, spawning units that move around randomly, then giving them all a target to move to, then needing selection.... I wonder if this is just the natural path we both ended up following, or is it just coincidence? Very interested to see you moving into the real time tactics space. Welcome! 😃
Great work. Keep it up ❤ can you make :
1. When player go to beacon, if we don’t take any action after 5 seconds he’ll star wandering anywhere again.
2. Random enemy’s can attack your base and your players can assemble themselves to protect it. Add villagers who will gather resources by themselves for your army upgrades. Who protect them. Attack and gather resources from other islands.
3. Build own village or capture others , if they surrender/fight back. Consequences happens accordingly. Like if they surrender their village color (house, army, flags) will change to your Colors and they will join you.
It would be neat if you could farm the animals and add that into the game loop so that you can eat, survive, cut down trees, build houses and fight repeat. Might be a lot but might make an interesting loop.
my Ideas is:
first add a shader to the solders like an out line , that will make every thing fits more nicely together.
second I imagine your game with ships , and pirats who want to destroy the the village and take all of it's resorces away , and maby the soldirs will build cannons and walls and ships to fight and defend them selves.
other than that your game look fantastic!
Hey man, I just binged all your videos! Think it would be cool to allow players to build land at the same time, place their soldiers/characters, and change it into a turn based game like Worms.
What would be cool is if it was a bit like the game "Worldbox" wich is like a world building/god simulator game. So like the units would act normally but be able to form armies, teams and upgrade and expand their city as time goes on and you could interfere for example by shooting a meteor on one of the bridges, destroying it and making the battle only accessible via sea, and one of the nations might not have discovered boats yet etc.
Maybe you could add races like orcs and elves witch would affect strength/intelligence
Maybe add hunting and ores to improve cities and even something like zombies for people who just want chaos
Maybe even let the player go into the body of a soldier and have fighting controls to help in battle or just explore the island... heck, let the player be an animal and flee from hunters! maybe even multiplayer to play hide and seek! Maybe one player can be the god and try to kill the other player as fast as possible with meteors, zombies, black holes???
Game looks good tho 👌🏻
With the addition of soldiers I'm feeling like the game could further develop by taking some inspiration from Castle Story. Building castles and defending them with your soldiers and maybe towers sounds like a lot of fun in this beautiful generated landscape. The randomness makes it very replayable, and if the mistakes of castle story would be avoided i feel like the game could be huge!
I want console ports😭
Great video❤
Definitely up for bacon soldiers
Neat video!
Now add Viking raiding ships!
Yoink!
Awesome video!
Still the better Thomas
love it❤
haha Im also using the same assets for my game for now, pretty great models
Needs castle.
Bro, why are we taking the same path?! 🤣 After making a cozy builder, I wanna make a tower defense or tactics game using what I've learned. Great minds I guess haha
Great video! #fearthebeard
baaabyyyyy
Bacon soilders collect bacon for the bacon and the bacon kings grandson
This is crying out for building defenses. Maybe if you had a certain budget to spend between troops and walls. The island is generated and then you must decide where to place your walls/towers etc. Setting up your little castle or just simple defense points and then picking your army composition. It leaves you with a lot of interesting decisions straight away. Do I want more units for my defense or do I want one less group of archers to wall off a key area. Or do I want medium groups of militia or 1 small group of elite champions etc.
This could be turned into attack and defense modes if you wanted where in attack mode the AI has placed walls and you need to choose what type of units to choose and where to place them before your attack. Then you have the fun of actually controlling the attack itself. The campaign could be a series of ramping challenges where the islands get bigger, the budgets get bigger and different stages have different limits. Could have preset castles to attack as part of a campaign. The defense waves could have different budget limits in troops vs defenses
The crazy scope creep version of this could have a battle map where it's loads of islands in a sea and you send your armies between them to attack or garrison them on your islands with defenses you've set up yourself. Choose how many units to garrison on different islands, where to place buildings that allow you to spawn units etc. Like total war but at sea. I don't think anything like that has ever been created and you have all the ground work for it. Really excited to see where you take this as it has so so much potential. I hope you consider experimenting with some colour/lighting combos for a grittier war feel too. Nighttime raid on an island goblin camp sounds sick.
You will make a lot on switch, a lot of people say more than on steam bruh so do that asap
how to contact you bro
