Loved watching this vid Rich and see you grow in the sense of refining and being efficient in your packing (to me anyway!) amazed what you can fit in there! Really appreciate the videography and overall very therapeutic to watch, and glad you have a talking part in the movie!
Most kind as ever Mr G - not to mention buying me more coffee, thanks so much! Always little improvements and experiments to be made, all part of the fun. Really pleased you enjoyed! Rich 👍
A good watch that, Rich. Complete honesty from you as always. Steak looked very nice. I am into lamb steaks now if I have meat on camp. I may do a lamb catch ’n’ cook video one day 🤣 🙃
🤣🐑🏃now that would get millions of views! I do like a bit of the old sheep meself, being half Welsh. Love it in the spring. Sometimes I eat it too 😬. Cheers Tim! 👍
Great video! I always flip the battery upside down in my flextail pump until i get to camp. Ive had it turn on too many times, so i finally learned my lesson lol
Oooh I have done that with my head torch but with the Flextail being USB rechargeable I didn’t realise you could get at the battery? Great if so, will have a better look! And thanks for watching. 👍
@CottonBud I have the flextail zero pump, I think you have the different flextail pump, so maybe yours doesn't come out. I HAVE to take my battery out to charge it.
Another lovely vid mate. I just had lamb chops on my recent camp - delicious. Good review of the Bergen - I'm a real fan of smaller packs and minimising kit. The more you know... all the best, Andy
Cheers Andy - yeah I am a big fan of flame grilled lamb too, can’t wait for my annual wild garlic and lamb springtime camp! Thank for the watch and comment pal. 👍
Nice one Rich, you shoe horned a lot of kit into that pack and it looked like a comfortable setup. It is a nice pack too, I've got some winter camping planned with my Helikon Bergen so I might film a similar load out so that we can compare and contrast. I agree with you about comfort though, I find the back system gets quick wet from the sweat build up. It would really benefit from having a padded mesh system. Shame about the pan, I've had the hot spot issue too, but whenever I use it, I'm always very conscious of managing the heat and moving whatever is in the pan around. Thanks as always for bringing us along 👍
Cheers Gavin. You're dead right about the sweat - you can see the damp patch at the small of my back whilst I'm setting up - not good in winter really - although luckily wearing only woollen base and mid layers meant I didn't get cold and it soon wicked away (and I didn't stink!). About the pan, you're also right - I could have scrambled the eggs with the bacon and it would have been fine, but I always think the litmus test for a pan (especially a non-stick one) is how it handles an omelette. When I realised the Speedster simmer ring was just cooking the inch in the middle and leaving the rest raw, I took it off and tried just constantly moving the pan around the flame, and this sort of worked. A right faff though. Add this to the fact the coating started coming off after a very quick session of cooking oatcakes last year and it's just too needy for my requirements. I guess its issues are probably the reason for its too good to be true discount, but at that price, it was definitely worth a punt! I'm going to bite the bullet and get a small cast iron pan I think - much heavier, but I can give it plenty TLC in terms of seasoning in the hope it's a bit less flaky in the field. Look forward to your own take on this sort of camp - although to be fair, this one was massively influenced by your camp about 3 years back where you had the same pack, tarp, a little twig burner and a Speedster stove! Thanks as ever for the watch, comments, and inspiration mate. 👍Rich
Hi and cracking camp, if only !!! I could pack so small, my pack for winter in 12-14 kg but 61 litres !!!! The sleeping mat and Rab 1100 are so big !! Great camp Cheers from a bivy
Thanks Adrian. Given that our weights aren't that different, all things considered I would have found the hiking part a lot more comfortable with my 65l Osprey! But it was an interesting exercise. Cheers 👍Rich
Haha it drives the wife nuts because I'm such a slob at home, can never find anything! 😅 And thanks for the comment about eloquence - I do worry a bit that the talky bits are amateurish (considering the RUclips fashion for editing every last breath from a monologue) but I obstinately want it to feel a bit more natural and a bit less needy and 'Gen Z'. Cheers Pete! Rich 👍
Throughly enjoyed as always Rich. Love that little backpack and may need to investigate it! It's like the Tardis with all the stuff you pulled out and showed us too. Know what you mean about cheap frying pans. I just take a small iron one with me now. Heavy but never lets me down. Thanks for the vid. - Ben
Thanks Ben. It is a great little pack, especially for days out in the woods. And good advice I reckon - first thing I did when I got home was order a small wrought iron pan which I shall season and care for so that it performs well on the day. Cheers mate! Rich 👍
I’ve got the same Bergen, it’s 18l but feels more like 30? I take too much beer to use it for an overnight. It’s an excellent day Bergen though. Great video, thanks.
Haha yeah I’d have been knackered if I wanted to take some beer. I agree, it’s perfect for a comfortable day camp, although I also use it for summer overnighters. I was really just trying a challenge here - my Karrimor SF Sabre 45 is much more sensible for this sort of camp. Cheers! 👍
@ Keep up the good work mate. I use the Ray Mears Leaf Cutter 90l for overnight camps, I can’t recommend it enough. I wish they did a smaller version, I chose the Helikon Tex Bergen as an alternative, love it, and the earth brown as well.
For a frying pan I would suggest Jetboil Summit Skillet. I've been using mine with Trangia and gas burner as well. Here in Finland it seems to be sold out all the time.
Yes that is a lovely pan and I may get it one day! However, I wouldn’t want to put it on a real fire. I have instead ordered a 20cm Petromax wrought iron pan. A bit heavy but small, naturally non stick if seasoned well, and distributes heat properly! 👍
I have the same pack with a pretty decent load out i wanna post but im not sure. I feel like you have so much more stuff packed into this bag that i never have room for
Bear in mind I have 2 x SERE pouches on mine. They really do help with the space efficiency when it comes to the multitude of little things. Also, down bag and coat make a HUGE difference - I wouldn’t stand a chance of packing like this with synthetics. I say post! Load outs are ALWAYS interesting, and you may get some useful tips in the comments. There’s a lot more to this pack than silly exercises like the one I’ve tried here! I’m not really using it how it was designed - as a day pack. Thanks for the watch and comment. 👍
Nice to hear your voice Rich 👍 That 13L is like a tardis! I would of been freezing my nuts off with that setup 🥶 You can't beat a steak, and the omelette looked decent TBF. My winter kit inc, beer, food, water etc is 15KG! 👍 Lee
Yeah looking back at the vid it does look like I should be cold doesn't it? But I was really snug - small fire kept the edge off and the kit/setup did its job for once! Now I've proved a point to myself it's back to the Sabre 45 with side pouches and a few luxuries to bring the weight back up, but with a much comfier pack. Cheers Lee! 👍 Rich
After a couple of trips when my air pump, or head torch was accidentally turned on in my pack I started keeping them in a plastic peanut butter jar . No more dead batteries.
The problem with the pan was that it’s titanium. Don’t get me wrong, titanium is awesome but it has poor heat dissipation properties. If you hold a torch to titanium you will get a hotspot on the other side of the metal but the area around the heat source will be relatively cool, the heat doesn’t spread out as easily as it would with other metals. Trangias and gas stoves tend to make a hot ring. You may find it cooks more evenly over an open flame, the coals, or your firebox with wood in it.
Very sound advice thanks - and I have another small titanium pan which works well over a flame as you can see from the vid I did before this, where I cook a steak and some eggs using it. The problem with THIS particular pan though is that it comes with a warning only to use on gentle heat sources, due to the non stick coating - hence my use of the simmer ring, as even a little alcohol stove was too much for it last time. A wood burning flame would crucify it. I think a non stick coated titanium pan is probably just a fundamentally problematic concept, and this would explain why the price got reduced from about 70 quid to more like 17! 👍
Very lovely video, as always. What do you think of the Led Lenser lattern? It is the ML-4 I suppose? I find mine to be a bit too white. It could be just the camera but to me it seems yours is more yellow.
Thank you! I think you may be right - there are two models of ML4, a white light and a ‘warm’. I guess mine must be the latter. I really like it though - it’s just so small and light, especially for a tent. Red light is nice for ambience too. The battery doesn’t last very long when on higher settings and the proprietary charging cable is a pain but generally it was a good purchase for me and I take it on most camps. 👍
I think having stuff ‘pouched’ before packing maybe doesn’t always help. I initially had the sleeping bag in its stuff sack, and clothes in another. Both compress super well. But I couldn’t fit everything in! It was only when I jammed both into a nylofume bag at the bottom that those little corners were filled and I could get the rest in. I also think it’s testament to the clever design of the pack that the pouches are just right for certain key bits of kit like tarps, 1l canteens etc. And having those extra SERE pouches makes a massive difference. But I know what you mean - every time I take my big Karrimor Sabre out it’s just as busting at the seams somehow! ‘Nature abhors a vacuum’ I guess 😅
Cheers Jim! No I have to say I’m really pleased with it. On first look I was worried that the tie out points looked a little insubstantial compared to my DD but fair play they’ve been great so far, no issues. Probably used it about 10 times in the last 3 years or so. Cheers. Rich 👍
its not the pan or oil.. its that stupid lid u stuck on top d burner constricting flame to that tiny hole sheesh course its gonna overheat center of the pan. looooool

@ eeergh… As I was walking out, about 100 yards from me on an obvious viewpoint was a natural materials shelter (quite a good one) with a massive fire scar and half burnt logs in front. Someone has some bushcraft skill, but bad LNT principles. I may go back and dismantle it, and make the scar disappear, just so when they rock up next time they think they’ve gone mad…
Ooops - just realised I got the capacity of this pack wrong during this vid - the main compartment is actually 18l, not the 13l stated. Apologies!
Masterful. You’re so much more organised than I am it’s unreal. The steak on the flames is a thing of beauty. Thanks for keeping it natural.
Also just looking if I can contact you anywhere privately, wanted to share a tip but fear it may be teaching you to suck eggs 🤣
