    Another nice chilled camp there Rich. It can often be tricky to get the right balance between comfort when you get to camp and comfort carrying your gear in. I guess the key takeaway here is to make sure your load carrying kit is as comfy as possible and then you can start properly appraising what amount/type of kit to bring. Many years ago I purposefully started getting my baseweight down so I could carry more fresh food and booze on wild camps (and even a guitar on a coupe of occasions!). But when I'm not walking far I tend to not be too bothered about weight quite so much (although I do have to be careful due to health issues). It's a constant process of planning, re-appraising, and adapting to different situations and needs. I'm off woodland static camping for a 10 days soon so I'll have a separate food holdall and more fuel/clothing/wash kit in my rucksack. Absolutely NOT what I'd take on a multi-day hike/wild camp in the mountains! All the best, Andy

    • @CottonBud
      @CottonBud  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Andy, good as always to hear your take - and I agree with every word of it. I've taken holdalls with me before now, with the missis dropping me as near as poss in the car 😅. But I've also walked a fair few miles up the side of a mountain miles from anywhere and stripped things down. But as you say, it's always fine tuning, right up until I leave the door really. I do think I'm subconsciously prepping for more multi day hikes in future. If this loadout had been in my Osprey 38l I wouldn't have known I was carrying it. I'll try that next time! Most of the walk is across fields, with the only the last bit through gnarly woods, so I don't really need a tough 'bushcrafty' pack for this particular spot. Cheers mate, and I hope you have a sublime 10 days - look forward to the vid(s). Rich 👍

    Like a magicians hat... I was expecting you to pull a rabbit out of a side pouch! You've got your tarp nice and tight too... love the stick in the middle to prop it up porch style... my kinda set up that 👍 I have a smaller burner than the Des one it has the velvet rope type stuff in it... I find it way better than a trangia, smaller, lighter and more efficient and it takes a spark. I think the problem with the DC one is the gauze stopping the sparks and cooling them before arrival into the bio mix 🤷‍♂️
    It's a good year for the cookoo I hear... never heard so many as this year from me and all you other tubers. I do like a porridge in the morning, it smells so much nicer than napalm 😁 Enjoyed Rich👍👍👍👍

      I was thinking exactly the same on the cuckoos! I'm not sure it's a great thing is it, seeing as they usurp other species' babies? Dunno... nice sound though! Thanks for the heads up on the velvet rope thing. I always assumed that it was the fumes igniting from the spark, rather than the liquid as such, but I guess not! The tarp setup like that was very civilised for a summer evening I must say. Cheers Lee! 👍

    That was some amount of bags that came out of that bag 😂 , it’s a fine balance on what to take or not and yes the weather dictates a lot of it . I have it honed down to around the 11kg or under in my exos which is comfy to carry . Obviously in high summer there is stuff you could miss out for a one nighter and make it lighter but with our weather you can rely on it lol atb Dave

    • @CottonBud
      @CottonBud  2 года назад

      All too true Dave. Yeah I suppose I could save a few grammes by ditching some bags and having everything knocking about in the pack together 😅. Clothes is the killer though. I find winter easier for the hills in a way, as I can just wear my one layer Buffalo Special 6 shirt on the hike, and not faff with layers UNTIL I get to camp, where I'm putting on clean merino, down etc. But even then that's bulky. I also think an all purpose down quilt for warmer months, tent and hammock friendly, may be something to save up for too . Cheers mate. Rich 👍

    Nice chilled camp mate😄 That little cooking setup looked spot on. I’m not fussed about ‘light weight’ camping. For me it’s all down to the pack, decent pack and I’d happily carry 12-15kgs over a prolonged period of time. Like you said in the end notes, why jack out on yourself leaving the luxuries at home! And as Woody Andy wisely says below, going light with your shelter, bag, mat etc just means you can justify more beer and treats! Cheers mate. Rich 👍🏼

    The HelikonTex ruck is almost a copy of the (Northern Ireland Patrol Pack). It's really a great 3 day ruck. It's meant for only what you need with a dash of what you want. Tough, light, and built for speed!

    • @CottonBud
      @CottonBud  9 месяцев назад

      This I did not know, thank you! It does seem to have a very similar size and form eh? A mini version of a classic Bergen, but with the H-Tex creeping into Alice Pack territory with the addition of the front pouch instead of MOLLE webbing? There is something quite satisfying either way about being forced to think about every spare inch of space in your pack - although I appreciate that in the military this has a lot more potentially serious repercussions than a civvy street leisure camper going without his hip flask! 👍

    Hi Rich, that looked like a nice comfortable camp and many thanks for the shout-out. Nice load out too. Apart from spending a fortune on down filled kit, I'm not sure there's much you could do to lighten the load. I do however wonder if you'd save space by using a bivvy bag/thermarest neo air setup rather than the hammock and under blanket?
    As for the Bergen, sorry to hear about that, I've never experienced that problem with the back system. I expect I'll take it out for a camp next month so will keep an eye on that. In my mind, nothing beats the Osprey pack when it comes to comfort!
    Nice idea with the scran, I've been watching a few videos from 'Hidden Valley Bushcraft' lately and he does some excellent crusader cup meals.
    Thanks as always for sharing 👍

      Hi Gavin mate. Now you say it, I am toying with the idea of a summer down quilt I could use for tents and hammocks in warmer months. I just need to win the lottery first 😅. Undoubtedly I could go even more minimal if ground dwelling (and I may in a future vid, plus of course I covered this in my blog a few months back) but this was specifically tackling a hammock dangle, as it was the only viable choice in this spot really (it's a lot more sloped than it looks on the vid, and very overgrown). Plus I'm a wuss in summer for bivvying - I don't like the slugs!
      As for comfort, I suppose I could pack the Bergen and then transfer it all into my 38l Osprey, just being disciplined not to fill any spare space! I do wonder if having weight strapped underneath the Bergen may make the comfort problem worse - will experiment. Anyway, cheers for the watch, comments, thoughts and nudge to get those silicon pouches! I think I may even use mine for boil in the bag beans etc in future. Cheers! Rich 👍

    Nice camp Rich , you should try Wilma’s Nordic Summer as an alternative to DEET, I’m like an all you can eat buffet for the dreaded midge but they leave me alone when this I have this applied , Uncle Ray sells it
    Could you have done without the meths bootle and burner and used the bush box as a twig burner perhaps ? I always try and have a base weight of about 8 kilos then with water & food it brings it up to about 10.5 kilos
    Most of the year I use a 35 lire pack in the middle of the winter I use a 45 litre pack with rocket pouches mainly for the extra insulation you need.
    I reckon those little packs aren’t able to carry the weight and that’s what causes the discomfort- a lot of ultralight packs have a weight recommendation on them & I think 10 kilos is the most for a
    35 litre bag so an 18 lite bag would be less anyway
    Good camp as always Rich regards Mick

    • @CottonBud
      @CottonBud  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Mick, all very sound thoughts and advice sir. Absolutely right on the twig stove - I only needed a few minutes of burn each day and there were plenty of little pine twigs everywhere. I'm guilty of perhaps being overcautious with fires, for safety and stealth reasons, but it would have worked in this spot - good shout. As for the weight 'limit' of the pack, I did wonder that, but they do market it as carrying your axe, saw, knife etc as well as other kit (plus it's made from nice tough Cordura) so it isn't really aimed at an 'ultralight' crowd I think. I just treckon the padding is lacking and the dimensions aren't ergonomic for someone my size sadly. A shame as otherwise I love it - oozes quality! But I can always just carry the same kit in my 38l Osprey and it's happy days. Cheers for the interesting comment! Rich 👍

    • @CottonBud
      @CottonBud  Год назад +1

      Hhmm I've just spent some time trying this, and I'm not sure really. There is only two inches between the molle strip and the tops of the front and side pouches. It's already awkward to get in one of the pouches with my small first aid kit above on one side. Plus my axe or other tools may well be sticking up into this area too. Have you got any pics of how you've done yours out of interest?

I tend to throw in too much things in my bag when I go camping - just in case - so I might take a little tip from you and try and go lighter, but sometimes it is better to carry a little bit more weight and have those creature comforts.
