Oh my goodness. That couple is sooooo adorable in their coordinating ensembles. Yay for older people creating styling and making!!! Thank you!

It's so fun to get a peek of your Japanese sewing books---so inspirational, even if I don't wear the entire look :) My big challenge is interpreting the "feel" for a small, round shouldered, busty body---heh---and I think the way to go right now is with color rather than a lot of fullness. Love BonPon. Thank you!!!

for sure! Go with the colors! you don't need to do the "whole look" to make it work 😃

Thanks for the reminder about the joy of sewing Japanese patterns. I indulged and bought a couple of the books you mentioned, but then I realized I actually own the Nani Iro Books, and as I brushed through them, I found several patterns that would be appropriate for my current sewing plans! I also wanted to mention that I am a big fan of the stylish dress books by Yoshiko Tsukiori. And several of her books are also available in English. The size range is limited in my versions, but luckily covers me. I am quite short and I think these patterns are better proportioned for shorter people. Thanks again for the inspiration. Happy sewing!

I do love those Yoshiko Tsukiori books! Agreed their size range is small but, like you, I'm covered. I wish more of these books were published in English. But that's me being a total American 😂

Great inspiration! I was thinking about the Tropical Research "lazy shirt" made into a dress would be similar.

Hi Gina, your videos really make my weekends! I have a couple of Nani iro books, love the idea, made a couple of the longer coats but I almost get annoyed at having to add on the seam allowances and I never really know, how, or when to do it. I get impatient! You sound like you are at the place I am, a bit of a standstill…just exploring. I adore the styles of Plumo, the clothes are out of my league to buy but I use it for ideas. Hope you know them. My Regards, from UK

Indeed I am in a bit of a standstill. I have plenty of "sew-jo" just don't know what direction I'm going? I have never heard of Pluma but OH MY GOODNESS! So glad you told me about them!

I recently got a Japanese pattern book and I’ve made a couple patterns so far. Google translate is very helpful and some basic sewing knowledge, since the instructions are sparse! I used my tracing wheel and some wax transfer paper right onto the fabric, which works ok. My fabric was same on both sides so I just put the marks on the inside. It’s a fun puzzle to sort through finding all the pieces!

I actually really enjoy the process too! Maybe it's the problem solver in us? 😂

I have followed Bon Pon on Instagram for a while. I knew she often made their outfits, sometimes even for their adult kids. I had no idea there was a sewing resource! So fun! Thank you.

Hi Gini, I LOVE Japanese patterns, but I haven't made any. Actually I'm a bit unsure on the sizing, I may not fit the usual size bands though I do know there are a few plus sized Japanese patterns available. I particularly loved the sort of denim blue and white polka dot dress with the stand up collar, I really love that collar! I also liked the hooded duster-y thing. Have you seen Rosary Apparel made a couple of Japanese patterns over the last few months, you may find her videos interesting. Thanks for putting that video together, the more I see Japanese patterns the more I want to give them a go, they seem to usually have great construction illustrations available for those of us who don't speak/read Japanese. See you next week 👋

I don't think you'd have any problems with the construction Catherine and, to be honest, a LOT of these books don't have a big size range BUT they are usually pretty oversized to begin with. According to most of the size charts I would be a L or even an LL but I almost never cut that size. Anyway, thanks for popping in I've been really enjoying your new videos I'm so glad you're back to doing them.

I have a few Japanese Sewing books, a couple of Nani Iro ones, but have only ever made two patterns The coccon top didnt turn out quite like I hoped and think it discouraged me. Might need to start because some of them have been bookmarked for years !!

Oh I am sorry to hear that you we’re disappointed with the cocoon dress I just looked at my books and thought this might be a good fit for some of my Italian silk fabric. Can you tell me what was awkward with your finished garment? I am a nervous about the sleeveless bit and then considering adding some sleeves.

@@originalspicygirl5412 I Made the top from some single gauze but think it was just the shape and proportion on me....maybe need to try it on again and see! Sometimes it takes a while when a style is different doesnt it? Dont let my experience put you off. Insta has some lovely versions!

I made that cocoon top too and I loved it "loved" past tense because I shrank it and then no longer loved it but I totally want to make it again. Which was the other pattern you made?

@thebigsewalong…have you had any issues converting the pattern sizes to US sizes while tracing? I read that Japanese pattern sizes run small

    • @thebigsewalong
      @thebigsewalong  10 часов назад +1

this really depends on the style you're looking at as almost all of the patterns I've used run pretty large. I have used (waaaaaay back when...) more fitted or tailored garment patterns and those, indeed, ran pretty small. All of my Japanese sewing books have measurements in CM so it's easy to convert. They usually only have a size chart for body measurements (vs finished garment measurements) and that, as with any pattern, can be a bit tricky.
