The best part about Stoicism is that you can go to the primary texts, read them and feel like they were written yesterday, not 2000 years ago. You can pick up Seneca, Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus and find the writing fresh as ever. In them, we find the wisdom to help us overcome adversity, find serenity and live well. They contain timeless truths and wisdom for any era.
But what if you wanted to go deeper? What if you wanted to read commentary and biographies on the practitioners? How did the philosophy develop over the years? What do the critics have to say? How did Stoicism inspire Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy? Or maybe you want to find a fiction book that is inspired by Stoicism? Or just a simple introductory text for beginners?
In this video Ryan Holiday talks about some of the essential books that you should read about Stoic philosophy.

Thank you
Thanks man!
Your passion is so palpable that I can almost run my fingers through it! My brother, I hope you know the positive values that reverberate out from what you create/share. Anywho, thank you, and please take care.
In my opinion, I would add the book “A handbook for new stoics” by Massimo Pigliucci. It’s a practical book.
I recently bit the bullet and bought your beautiful leather bound edition of Meditations and thanks to this video i got the new Waterfield translation of Epictetus and ordered Rufus from the UK. Cheers!
Love this!! Leaders read. I carry a vintage version Meditations by Marcus Aurelius in the glove box of my car in case of the worst possible "situation". It also offers comfort on those breaks that I allow myself to take while on this path. Having the book in my car is also a great present moment reminder that rarely "the path of least resistance" is part of the divine journey, but instead- "the obstacle is the way" All of the other ones are great as well- they all give a sense of solace in knowing that the "road less traveled" bears more fruit. I would also add the Harvard Press' biography of Metternich as well to this list.
I’m on vacation in Milan. Went into a bookstore today and happened upon the English section. It was all Christmas or philosophy books. I was very pleased to see that alongside Nietzsche, Aurelius, Seneca, and Machiavelli, there was a stack of a certain “366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living” - I even took some pictures.
Well done, Ryan. Truly inspiring 😊
I ordered "Meditations" yesterday and shall be arriving later on today! I've been reading "The Daily Stoic" daily for the past few weeks. Lately, I've been more interested in stoicism and philosophy, and have been learning more about them daily while applying the learning to my life. Thank you so much for the book recommendations ❤
Which one of those books prefer? I'm asking because I'm deciding which one of those books to buy
Hi, Ryan! Thank you for the recos. The first time I heard you was on Spotify podcast and I initially fell in love with Stoicism. I was in my downtime when I heard you. Since I began to have my interest on Stoicism and Marcus Aurelius, everything is starting to feel a little lighter. I used to be a non-reader. Now I recently bought two books (Meditations and Obstacle is the Way) and enjoying reading both. I have one coming, I had it reserved because it's an out of stock item here in our city! It's your The Daily Stoic. The way you delivered the idea of this philosophy is helping me pick myself up.
Enchiridion, chira is the ancient greek word for hand (modern greek : cheri)
Hence chiropractor : a person who practises by hand.
En is a connective word, so it means “to the hand”, your manual to work with.
Examples of en + word.
En & pathos(passion) : empathy
En & phasi(phase): emphasis
Etc
Handbook....basically.
One thing I truly love is a book recommendation! Thank you for these~
Oh how true it is that real peace is only found in the calm and mild light of philosophy.
I prefer to think that Frankl's message is man can MAKE meaning, not FIND it. He actively pursued meaning during his internment. I love this list! And your book, The Daily Stoic. Thank you!
Love the Daily Stoic, it's always so inspiring to me. I wish there were more women stoics ya know...just to get a differnt view. Cheers from France!
That’s impossible🤣
Cheers 😊
There are plenty of modern female Stoics. Unfortunately there are also "broics" who twist Stoic philosophy to promote misogyny and hate.
@@user-uc7qb1su4e really? Why so? I'm intrigued 🤔
Greetings from Belgium Wallonia. I would find it interesting to discuss the topics of the newsletter (or others) with someone. If you don’t mind a beginner’s view.
Can you pls do a tour of your bookstore? I love your shelving!
I love your channel and all of your emails. Do you know of any FEMALE stoics? I think that would be a fascinating take on the subject! Thanks for all you do!
Admiro tu trabajo Ryan, veo tus videos todos los días, no te escribo en inglés porque se que entiendes español hehe, un gran abrazo!
Super work. Very glad that I happened across this. You definitely have a new subscriber! 😊
thanks for sharing really insightful...important is to know how one is making progress in life
You have your own bookstore? That’s like a piece of heaven.. Anytime you could lock me in there, I would stay and read and never stop. Reading books is like having the key set to the past, present and future. Kids, real books will never die so start reading and put away that phone.. ❤
Hello everyone! A special big greeting to the creator of the video who made this possible for us, I have to mention the book Astro Money Alchemy, a book full of secrets of attracting money, something abnormal, all recommendations, and once again congratulations to the author of the video
Thank you Ryan. I would recommend also Star Rover and Martin Eden by Jack London 🙏✌️🚀
Man I'd love to visit your book store. You introduced me to Robert Green and Marcus. I'm 15 months clean now. Off disability after 12 years..I'm a former police officer and broke my neck. Opiates ruined my life. I was homeless, terrible credit. No way out. #wedorecover. Thank you Ryan. Just signed up for the free 7day thing....(writing my first book! "Rookie School to rehab..a stoics perspective"
Real stoic ❤
You are simply awesome and inspiring to me - infj
A great list, and one timely as I plan to venture DEEPER down the Stoic rabbit hole in 2024 (some new ones just added to my list 😀)... keen to hear from anyone who read this comment and has an opinion on which book to begin with
I'm a Freemason, and its education and ritual work is what interests me most. I discovered the book 'Meditations' after doing a Google search on the history of the 4 Cardinal Virtues are - and stumbled onto Ryan's channel. Seems to be the 1 book on Stoicism that all seem to know, so I'd suggest starting with that one and going from there. The translation by Gregory Hays seems the go-to version as it comes highly recommended by Ryan, so it's the one I bought multiple copies of (to give away). Ryan truly makes the philosophy much easier to understand as he ties in the wisdom of the ancients to real-life applications.
It is definately on my list to read again@@BurxNorrod :) thanks for the thoughtful comment
Thanks for sharing!
This video is awesome... what would you say is the first one I should read... I've heard Meditions is tough if you know now background is Stoicism which I don't have. Thanks.
I'd like to have seen 11 books recommended, besides two of yours, as well.
I would add:
- On Obligations by Cicero
Great book
This guy creates a booklist of stoic books you should read and includes two of his own? Wow
I'd add Seneca's "On the shortness of life", James Romm's "Dying every day: Seneca at the court of Nero" and anything written by Massimo Pigliucci to the list.
I just finished dying every day. I really enjoyed it, it offers a very different but also more complete view on Seneca
"On the Shortness of Life" is included in "Letters from a Stoic"
This book is really important. It wakes you up from complacency in life (sleepwalking) and shocks you into a sense of urgency and purposefulness - makes you re-examine what you're doing in your life, whether you are spending it wisely or just wasting it until there is "no balance left." You will come to realise that although life is short, nothing truly matters. We exist simply to exist, it is your choice whether you want to lose yourself to externals. And Epictetus adds his view to the paradox of life's purpose: "Since nothing can truly be taken from us, nothing is truly lost." In my view, those who know how to play the game of life, or "any game" will usually draw, but those who know why they play will WIN.
@@itsmichaelmai Seneca offers a contrarian view to most conventional message (which is to offer your service to others or help others). He emphasize the importance of being selfish rather than selfless, although you can't begin to be selfish until you waste a large portion of your life away in selfless activities. He also advise us to be resourceful in choosing how we spend our efforts: let our efforts not be in vain, which is hateful, or efforts unworthy of it, which is shameful. This means to be careful in setting goals, make sure it produce great results or it's a terrible waste of life. It’s better to be idle than to be busy doing nothing (like guard dogs). If you like Seneca's philosophy, you can't do without his fellows: Epictetus and Epicurus. Epictetus offers compelling views on what freedom truly is and how we must avoid "attempting impossible tasks." And Epicurus offers insight into the Art of desire, whether certain desire is worth pursuing because of pleasure or pain that is involved. These three philosophers can't do without each other.
I also advise people to venture into Zen wisdom after you're done with Stoics, it offers Japanese insights into ways of thinking that enlightens and make you a better thinker. Books like Zen soup.
Any recommendations of stoic literature written by women? 😊
Lmao
I named my son Zeno in honor of the father of stoicism, who was brought back to life by Mr Holiday 🤙
That is really awesome. I visited his "birthtown" Larnaca recently, he is very inspiring, unfortanetly not much of his work survived..
It is possible to write without reading. Example? Simon Sinek.
But also, like Marcus Aurelius said: "Throw away thy books; no longer distract thyself: it is not allowed..."
and: "But cast away the thirst after books, that thou mayest not die murmuring, but cheerfully, truly, and from thy heart thankful to the gods."
and: "No longer wander at hazard; for neither wilt thou read thy own memoirs, nor the acts of the ancient Romans and Hellenes, and the selections from books which thou wast reserving for thy old age."
Love this❤

I'm proud of you Ryan
Is there somewhere we could find this list of books that you recommend? Thank you for the great videos...
I wonder if Ryan has read the Dune books by Frank Herbert, there are so many insightful quotes and passages in them
Examples?
@@user-uc7qb1su4e if you search "Dune quotes" you'll find some great compiled lists
“Fear is the mind killer”
"The real universe is always one step beyond logic"
Meh…the ramblings of a mad man.
Keep wearing Rock band tees in your videos, Ryan 🎉
That is a really nice looking hardcover of Meditations. Can we get link to purchase?
its on his store go description
@@BeastFromTheEast.23 thank you. Wow, the book is even nicer than I thought!
Where can i buy that leather bound Meditations book by Marcus Aurelius (that you hold at 1:30)?
Another great one is "long walk to freedom " Nelson Mandela
How To Think Like a Roman Emperor by Donald Robertson changed my life! Was the first book I read over stoicism. Couldn't recommend it hard enough, Donald Robertson is a great.
can u do the exact things about ethics and morals
Amen Ryan

These supernatural virtues ignite 🔥 the cardinal virtues.
Just finished meditations penguin edition and i did not like it. Proceeded to read the first 5 books of Hays translation on the internet and i loved it. If you’re looking for a more straightforward translation and delivery read the Hays edition. If you want a more thought provoking translation that asks of you to really read carefully i say get the penguin edition.
Please can someone please direct me to the best version on Marcus Aurelius Meditations to read? I have the moden library classic but I'm looking for something a little more beautiful to have on my shelf and challenging to read
Much❤ 🇳🇬Ryan read obstacle is the way, I want to learn much about stoic👏👌.
Would pay $1 to have y’all add a list and links in the description.
Make it $5 and I’ll do it
Make it $5 and I’ll do it
Make it 10 and I’ll do it!
$69 and I'll do it.
Where can I buy that version of meditations by Marcus Aurelius? The Amazon one has a difficult cover
According to the interweb.....
Pythagoras
A Greek philosopher and mathematician who lived around 500 BCE, Pythagoras was a well-known advocate of veganism. He believed that all animals had immortal souls and practiced "abstinence from beings with a soul". He also objected to the mistreatment of animals and the ritual offering of meat to the gods.
Plato and Socrates
These Greek thinkers were influenced by Pythagoras and followed vegetarian and vegan diets.
Theophrastus
A student of Aristotle who was against animal killing and meat consumption. He believed that battles were the most likely reason people ate meat, and that animal victims enraged the Gods.
I highly recommend Donald Robertson's "How to think like a Roman emperor". It's brilliantly written (and narrated by the author himself in the audiobook version), a masterful melange of philosophy, history and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Any specific traductions you would recommend for reading the classics?
Does anyone know the titles of the green and orange books in the background?
theres no such thing as being better, being stoic lets you love yourself and accept yourself for what you are. meditation works wonders also, going for a hike
You can't write without reading.
Simon Sinek:
Hold my beer...
nice!
Which books should you read first?
does anyone know song on the background? shazam won’t find it ;(
Great!
You have my same ambition
I sure hope you read this. Do you think that there are Stoics here and now? Not practicing but legendary thinkers who take notes. Not writers but Those who deserve to be in Ryan’s book in 3023?
Ps Maiden🤘
Bastrop and Texas are proud of you works.
Can you compare and contrast stoicism with woke ideology?
Ryan, Your effort to share is to be appreciated and grateful for. But, you must learn how to be an educator. Criticism: talking to fast, holding books sideways so no one can see them or determine the author of each work, jumping around and swinging your arms is distracting from your words, and finally the transcript does not precisely reveal your exact words and misspells many. Sorry pal to be so critical! All in all, you have all the right stuff coupled with a heart of gold. Your gift of sharing is priceless.
Sincerely, Dr.Mkh
Excellent
Where to buy these books coz in Amazon nd Flipkart there are only fake ones
Awesome
also Cicero
There are many versions of meditations by marcus aurelius available in internet can someone guide me to buy the correct version of the book
Ryan praises the Gregory Hayes translation
Thank you as always for your reading suggestions: question, any women stoically? And if so any readings from them?
Check out his book " Lifes of the Stoics", there he talks about a Stoic woman called Porcia :)
@@itsmichaelmai thank you
Have you read the bible? Just curious.
After the Bible, one should read, The Imitation of Christ. Great book. Great philosophy!
Your job - reading jobs - is the best ever. I envy you.
So you refreshing to see someone doesn’t have false modesty.
but who is Stephan Hanselman the whole time actually, ?? why dont we hear about him??
I am curious, what would you say is the difference between a philosophy and a religion? You quote from books written thousands of years ago and you repeat a set of rules/guidelines that you derive from them.
This is not meant to be a provocative question. I have watched a number of your videos over the years and have found them very useful in helping to strengthen my mindset to deal with the modern world. So I would really be interested in your response :) thanks
I think there is definitely a lot of overlap between philosophy and religion. I suppose the simplest way to put it is that philosophy is a set of rules or practices aimed at the self, whereas religion is a set of rules and practices focused on worshipping a god or gods.
One is spiritual, the other physical
Gud collections
Ryan, what an incredible list. It contains many books I have not read. I will get through a few based on your recommendation.
I am surprised that you have no authors who are women on your list. Surely this population has written books that warrant inclusion on a list alongside the male greats.
I studied philosophy at a military academy and therefore in a military context. There, they also did not highlight women's works as a matter of course, but more as a special exception that only warranted consideration in isolation. You have done so much work in this space; do you know of any women stoics?
A book that has 100% changed and improved my mind this year is the Bible. Don't sleep on it.
Bless you, my sibling in God’s name.
Amen🙏✝️
@cosmic_kid2868name one😂
@Insomniac-xu9dsread the book of job 10 more times,if you’ve read it 4 times your shouldn’t feel hopeless
I read it recently and whilst it has valuable philosophy and introspection. I'd also say it's a huge bit of fictitious slop that people take way too seriously.
I found meditations by marcus autelius hard to understand and read😂😂 anyone who feels this way
This is all well and good, but I prefer my life lessons from the immortal works of Tom Robbins.
The practicing stoic?
im alive
First Viewer!
I never understand this desire to be “first”.
It's not a desire to be first. I just happened to open up the video just after it appeared. That had never happened to me before, so I was surprised.
@@herrweiss2580
Highly unlikely!
Its funny that people think a book being smart pretty means having a good life. People that have and maybe more of still dont have a life worth living
2nd viewer!
Do you have a set of these books in the best binding possible that you'll be selling for $110 each? If not, I'm not going to read them.
Read my book “Meditation and Spirituality a Philosophy” - A Path to Attain a Steady Meditative State
Zhuan Falun
I see there's no Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child in there 🤔😆
I don’t get why he was holding each book up but making it face the side rather than the camera. Only for one or 2 seconds he would turn the book to face the camera so we can jump, pause and get the name. Why torture us? Just make the book visible while you talk about it. I love Rayan work as a writer but he’s horrible at making videos
I used to really like you, read all your book…but now, you sound more and more like a guru ( read stoicism, you'll become rich) and you repeat yourself a lot. I feel like I saw a video like that 50 others times. Time to reinvent you, buddy
