here's what I noticed as an oatly fan who switched away. (1) supply constraints. for the entire pandemic it was basically only available at specialty stores and frequently sold out online. (2) inconsistency in product. sometimes oatly barista will taste distinctly nutty or like coconut milk. for some reason, the oatly in the tetrapak-style carton tastes better.
so, when oatly goes out of stock, people are forced to try other brands that actually compare favorably. I think they made a mistake.

Funny enough, I switched TO oatly a few months ago because my previous go-to brand (planet oat) was almost never in stock, while oatly was. It also helps that oatly's carton is bigger, so I don't have to restock as often.

I see the dark blue one sold out frequently, so I just started making my own. I got a soymilk maker for making tofu, and it works great for making grain and nut milks too. If you don't have that, a blender works great as well.
    The recipe I use is:
    1c soaked oats (3-4 hours),
3-4 cups water depending on how creamy you like it
2 Tbsp neutral oil that is liquid at room temp.
I use organic canola oil, and just recently got walnut to try as well. The oil helps a lot with the texture I've found after making it without a few times.

I did a _lot_ of experimenting with DIY oatmilk about a year ago. I'll give you some tips if you'd like to improve your recipe, based on what I found.
So the oats you use really matter. I found that old fashioned rolled oats (like typical Quaker ones) are really unpleasant tasting for oatmilk. Fresh oat groats are immeasurably better. You should steam them for 10 minutes to break down the grassy-like compounds within the oat, soak them in water overnight, and do the steps pretty much how you say above. Do add about 1/8 - 1/4 tsp salt though! And about 5g sugar / cup of total liquid.
The more complicated version involves enzymes and precise temperature water baths, but honestly it's probably not worth the trouble unless you really want to replicate the store bought version (which I did). If anyone has any questions let me know!

I haven't been interested in Oatly since they chose to attack local, independent oat milk producers here in the UK, all because they thought that the word "oat", in combination with an image of a cup, was enough to infringe on their copyright. Thankfully Oatly lost that battle.
Then they became involved with Blackrock and all of their "environmental" claims crumbled. THEN they plagiarised Don't Hug Me I'm Scared in a recent marketing campaign.

I think the point is not about Oatly but that oat milk is the first vegan milk that tastes like the real thing. So I think that's what brands are capitalizing on. As a vegan for 20+ years, there's no comparison compared to soy or almond milk. And when I go to coworking spaces like here in Los Angeles, they only serve oat milk because it's a passable alternative to dairy drinkers. I can buy a half-gallon of Simple Truth oat milk at Ralph's for $2-3 that's often on sale and tastes just as good. So, to me, it's all about the price and not the brand it originated from.

My partner and I discovered Oatly during 2020 lockdown and were always looking for it at the grocery store since it would sell out so fast. It’s still not there to this day a lot of the time. The Planet Oat extra creamy original is the only other brand that tastes as good. Chobani Oat milk is gross in my opinion.
Also the stock price of Oatly has more to do with the overall sell off state of the market, it’s basically following the trend of every other company selling off this past year with inflation fears.

the IPO price was just way too high for a business that is still losing money. Right now it is more resonably priced and might even be a good bet on the growth of plant based milk. Oatly dosn't need to have the biggest market share if the sector grows a lot, which will most likely happen. Still kind of risky because the company has a lot of problems, but probably the best way to invest in the plant based milk trend.

Still believe the company will grow even if it looses share, since the TAM is so high, and with the recruitment of 2 new VPs one from Mars and other from Danone (which is the parent company of ALPRO, the leading PB brand in Europe, in US is called SILK), both can bring a more professional way of working. Overall the market is super competitive it will be hard for Oatly to lead the market, but it will likely continue to be relevant on the medium/short term.
