The story of when Bob Morris and Allan Moffat got together mid 1980 race to hold the flag for the Ford Falcon (Channel 7 Breville Falcon.) Also includes Morris's famous first line on race cam where he said Back off or was it F_ _k off, you decide, plus the very unusual driving style display from Allan Moffat beamed live around the country. The interviews highlight there may have been some controversy between the Morris camp and Allan Moffat at the end of that day, again, you decide..

The 1980 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 was the 21st running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race. It was held on 5 October 1980 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst in New South Wales, Australia. The race was open to cars eligible under the locally developed CAMS Group C Touring Car regulations with four engine capacity based classes.
Peter Brock and Jim Richards won their third consecutive Bathurst 1000 debuting the Holden Commodore for the Holden Dealer Team. In taking a one lap win over Peter Janson and Larry Perkins, Brock Brock won his fifth Bathurst 1000, breaking the record for most wins in the history of the race. Janson and Perkins finished second for the second successive year and finished three laps ahead of Ian Geoghegan and Paul Gulson as Commodores filled the first seven positions.
The race is most famous for the specatacular retirement of the Ford Falcon of Dick Johnson. The 1980 Australian Touring Car Championship had featured one of the smallest fields in its then twelve years as a multi-race championship
Are you guys gonna do a tribute to Mike Raymond? He was a legend of Australian Sport after all.
"we're all mates in this business." I love it.
Chris Economaki, covered everything. From nascar to football to this race, and more.Just sayin'
I always loved the lime green colourscheme used by Morris in this period, very distinctive.
The 1981 Morris XD was a striking looking car, what a pity it was written off end of Bathurst race. Am hoping for Biante to do this car, and the following 1982 XE Falcon in the blue/white Seiko/Kmart warpaint.
Love the factory door Trims and wind down Windows even the factory lock knob
Moffat was given a mid race drive and refuses to take team orders to drive faster? Wow. He may have been right given the car blew up when driven harder but still, that’s the team to decide no?
have a close listen to Moffat talking to Economaki last thing he says is "thanks Edsel thats a great gift" Edsel 2nd was running Ford Aus at time. Methinks Edsel made some phone calls after Moffs XD cried enough on lap 3. Ford say theyre outta racing but they never really are
it was all arranged before the race - they all had to qualify in each other's car - moff and fitz in #7 and bob and bill in #1
1:25 Bang on EBFII
Nice attempt by Wilko to save Bob Morris suggesting it as "back off". Surely the Morris camp could have signalled Moffat to go faster via pit boards. It's not like you would expect him to be Bill O'Brien's speed. Why didn't they give John Fitzpatrick a run?
I did speak with Bob recently and questioned him on this.He confirmed to me that he did actually say,"Back-off."
it was bill obrien's car - bob supplied the sponsorship and bill supplied the car
i haven't watched this yet, but moff was driving slower than bob expected, because the car was sick and needed to be nursed to the finish. within 1 and a half laps of bill taking it over, it blew up, proving moff's beliefs. moff had superb mechanical sympathy but bob and others didn't believe it. maybe this went some way to changing their minds :)
I think he said back off with a F
We all know exactly what Morris said. Who exactly does the commentator think he's fooling?
he was deflecting because back then television stations faced huge fines for profanity, and repeated performances could result in loss of broadcasting licence.
Yeah it was a different time! A quick comment from Garry Wilkinson!
I don’t think Bob said back off!!!
He didn't of course we know what BM said!
Why did Moffat have to swap cars?
+Jeff H His car expired, so he did a track side deal with Bob Morris as he & Bob were the last chance for the Fords that year.
Lol slow down keep the temps down save tyres but I want you under 2.10's
Back off? Really?
Moffats XD was a thrown together pile of rubbish built out of spare parts to get him to Bathurst because ford ditched him. Always the tryhard moffat wouldn’t let it go and the xd was given a GIFT to run in the top ten shootout even though it hadn’t qualified to appease ford tragics. On his HOT lap the magic XD spewed oil and smoke the whole way around the mountain and should’ve been disqualified. Didn’t matter because on lap three the MIGHTY 351 blew its guts to pieces.
@@captainkaos754 quiet, you holden ass smoocher.
Rephrase that thought to - “we were all mates in this business” - because australian motorsport is not now what it once was - and you can blame the egos in the supercars for that!
