This is SO classic, my family members & I still say "This is ALL I NEED" as we're grabbing crap leaving the house, or the store, and we go back for something else... I just love everything about this movie. Despite all the ridiculousness it has a message of "LOVE is all that matters", regardless of your station, color, religion, age, ANYBODY is family if your heart makes them "family"
I showed this to my daughter when she was about ten and she loved it. She's in her mid twenties now and I go in her room and take stuff and say "All I need is this candle, I don't need anything else...I need this" as I pick up something else LMAO. She cracks to laughing and then says OMG dad now we have to watch that movie again lol.
It's funny on its own Steve Martin saying "I'm gonna buy a diamond so big It's gonna make you puke" Bernadette Peters saying "I don't wanna puke" just added to the halirity. The very first time I saw that scene I was about 8 years old and laughed uncontrollably!!!!!!!!
This scene epitomizes the brilliance of Steve Martin’s comedy. I don’t know how many times I’ve re enacted this scene for a good laugh. The Jerk is one of the best comedies in movie history, and it always will be.
I Love that his pants are around his ankle nothing exposed but clearly not in his mind 😊 this movie is one I have watched for over 40years and I dance with every scene 😊❤

I went with my sister, nephew and brother in law to Disney World last month. We left the hotel room one morning to go to the park and my sister said do we have everything. I said "I don't need one other thing. I need this!" and I grabbed some random object in the room. She just started laughing. 😂😂
"What are you looking at, what do you think I am, a jerk or something" And he walks away, always brings tears to my eyes while laughing, the entire theater started laughing...classic running away from problems scenario
He's gonna break up the wood paddle into the ashtray and set it on fire with the matches and then fashion the batteries from the remote into a power source for the lamp... and then sit back and admire his handiwork in his red chair. Genius.
It’s been so long that I’ve seen this movie. I was talking about my dad the other day & out of the blue mentioned how much he LOVED this movie. I miss hearing the true, genuine…laugh from my father when we’d watch this movie. Thanks for sharing everyone.
So glad I found this. I say this all the time to my husband “ I just need this, and that’s all I need! Wait, I need this!” I start cracking up, but he has never seen the movie so he just looks at me like “whaaaat the?!” 😂😂. Showed this to him so now he gets it!
If there’s anything deep to learn here, it’s that no things on this earth are crucial to us as humans…oh, except paddleballs. Oh, and remote controls, just paddleballs and remote controls, and no other things. Oh, except beanbags, they didn’t mention them, but that’s implied in the deeper message. Paddleballs, remote controls, beanbags, and we don’t really need any other things as human beings. Thanks for the deeper message, Steve!
If there's a real hard hitting lesson from this scene. It is that we came to this world with nothing, and we leave it with NOTHING !!! Not even an ashtray !
THIS IS MY FAVORITE 🎭🏆 THIS IS ALL I NEED ( I used to try to do this to make my kids laugh , when the atmosphere in our home was less than perfect ) WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE ABOUT 5&8 and they would say “ BUT ALL MY FRIENDS HAVE THIS , WHY CANT I GET ONE ? I WOULD STAND UP AND START GRABBING THINGS AND SAYING ALL I NEED IS THIS COUCH PILLOW , then I’d walk a little further into the kitchen and run back to the dining room & grab a chair and say AND THIS ALL I NEED IS THIS CHAIR , AND THIS SPOON AND THIS BROOM AND THATS ALL I NEED , ( I’d walk outside to the backyard and some times my neighbors would give me the “WHATS GOING ON EYES”
has a 10-year-old watching this, all i remember is everyone cross-eyed and this scene.. lol. my life after that, all i need has been a running inside joke of my family and i. u know play argue and leave, this all i need.. im smilling as i type. lol
So glad you made this. One of the best memories of my childhood. Watched this with mom and dad. We always reenacted this scene. Looked it up to show my 16yr old. 😊
I just heard a song on the radio that reminded me of the way we were... Well what was it?!? "the way we were" *sobbing* This whole scene is a laugh every few seconds, it's so good.
Literally me at the Grocery Store... "Okay I have everything on my list. I don't need anything else. This is all I need!" ::Goes down a random aisle:: "I need this bag of chips!"

Steve Martin is one of the only true pure comedic geniuses of all time. We rarely see such talent concentrated in one man. I would put Martin Short in that category too. And that’s it just those two and that’s it. Johnny Carson is also in that category. So it’s Martin, Short, and Carson and that’s all of them no more.
All he needs is the ashtray and the paddle game and the remote control and the matches and the lamp and the chair and the magazine AND THAT'S ALL! Whaddya think he is, some kinda JERK!?

I still do too. @48. One of Lifetime favorites .
My wife and I do this as well. "I don't need one other thing..."

My sister and I use it a lot too. 😂
Hahaha, I still say it too!
"Why are you wearing that old dress?"
"Because I heard a song on the radio that reminded me of the way we were."
"What was it?"
"The Way We Were!"
Such an overlooked gag in this brilliant scene!
I know everyone quotes the "This is all I need" part, but I always die laughing at Bernadette Peters' delivery of "I DON'T WANNA PUKE!"
That is a funny line. 😂😂

Why would you go take stuffs from your daughter's room? She lives in a storage room?
I love that story! Kind of reminds me of me and my daughter.

Agreed.
"I don't need one other thing. Well, I need this." Lol!!!

The ashtray and the paddle game and THAT'S ALL I NEED!
the best part is after this.
"i need my dog"
*dog growls at him*
"maybe i dont need my dog..."
This was Steve Martins best movie!!
This one was hilarious, but "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles" is the best ever, and not just for him, but for the late, great John Candy, too.
Nobody will know how bad it hurts laughing til tears like me watching this movie growing up
