    My son is about to turn 16 and I was shopping around for his first car. I asked him what is favorite car is and he immediately told me his top five cars. Mustang GT, Genesis coupe, BRZ, FRS, and Veloster Turbo. Thing that surprised me was two of top five is from Hyundai. I'm Korean American from LA and car enthusiast. My son does not understand what Hyundai have endure to transform their image from their 1986 pitiful Excel launch which my dad bought for me to be patriotic. I'm so proud for Hyundai for their hard work. After 30 years I have purchased another Hyundai but I bought it not to be patriotic like my dad but because my son thinks its a cool car period. The brand new silver fully loaded Hyundai Veloster turbo parked next to my Audi A7 waiting for my son to comeback from his camping trip. How about that? I can't wait to see his reaction. Love your reviews and enthusiasm. Keep up the good work.

      Pete From OC Hyundai has come a long way. I never even noticed them until about 2010. Being from the Motor City a asian car has to be “good” to gain attention over American muscle. Although interesting you say Audi. I am on my third vw/audi myself. Currently a b7 a4 tuned by APR. I’ve owned a lot of cars, and you just can’t beat the muscle and build quality of a audi/vw.

    To the people watching these reviews: If you are thinking about buying this car please do not let OTHER people`s comments stop you. I own this car and I can say the suspension is not the best over bumps. The steering can feel lose at sometimes.. But understand this car makes you feel something others cars cant... It may be the looks alone, but this car is one of a kind. For a FWD cornering is very fun... especially taking on a hard corner the back end loves to be thrown around, reason why people say its loose. I see people downing so much, and I can feel the hate through the comments. Just because the car looks a certain way people want to bring up the negatives...

      I have a 2013. The 'wobbly' back end is the primary thing that terrifies me. In a straight line, on super smooth roads it's amazing. Feels planted in the corners, but heaven forbid it hits a bump in said corner doing above 50mph, you will be scared. I ordered rear sway bar hoping it may help. Otherwise, I enjoy driving it on long trips.

I got performance exhaust with a good intake on 93 and I’m pushing 215whp. There’s so many modification options and overall, this car is so much fun to drive, I’d highly recommend this car to anyone interested in buying.

I got the VT and i leave pretty much everyone in my dust and its pretty good on gas. and its a small light car so it moves quick relative to other cars. I have a 2015 Veloster Turbo and I love it. There are much faster and better handling cars out there in the price point +/- $5k *cough* Ford Focus ST *cough*, but in city traffic, I rarely have the chance to push a car to it's limits. It's an awesomely fun but practical daily commuter and the interior features are amazing for the price. The styling is love or hate, but I"m a fan.
    If you're a person that likes to drive, this car is totally for you. If you're a driving enthusiast, however, you'll probably want something more aggressive though. For me, personally, it's a great balance,

      I looked at veloster before I got my FOST, its a damn good value with an unique look, but its more of a sporty econo car versus a hot hatch performer(ST/GTI). Its a really good value and I would recommend this car just for that reason.

  • @freezor80

    Matt, the R-Spec comes with brake torque vectoring so it doesn't do the one wheel peel when cornering. Plus it has upgraded suspension and brakes that are not mushy. Come to KC and you can test my wife's R-Spec Veloster. The only thing I really hate about here car is the grand touring Kumho all season tires. They don't allow for much grip when launching it. The tires also give up long before the suspension does. Pretty much it peels through first gear and some times in second. Once we get upgraded tires it will be a real rocket. Also if you wait until the end of the model year like we did you can get an R-Spec for under $20k. You really need to try a R-Spec. I have driven both and we bought the R-Spec because it is so much better. It only has the options we really wanted anyway.

    Closest competition for this is the Fiesta in my opinion. They are between 2700-2800 lbs, both FF hatchbacks, both have a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine, both have torsion beam rear axles, somewhat similar price range. The Fiesta feels smaller and more nimble, but its a better value proposition for performance. This feels like a better value proposition for comfort and features and styling.

      Blake bradshaw Honestly, after a few minutes I adjusted. I can see everything i need to see from the back. Visibility wise I have no complaints. Handling wise no complaints either honestly lol. Biggest plus for me was gas. I drive 20 miles each to way to work so a total of 40 miles a day. My car gets roughly 380-400 miles before I have to refuel, and it only costs me like 22-25 dollars to fill up. Plus having thee doors is awesome lol.

    • @ertren6
      @ertren6 8 лет назад +53

      Stephen Curry Well, if you're talking to me, then yes, a veloster is generally slow. But I did not buy this car to street race or run 10 second quarter miles lol. I bought it for the fuel economy, insurance rates, and sexy look. I easily get 400 miles to the tank before i fill up again, and it'll cost me 25 bucks to fill up. I pay just 114 dollars in insurance for my wife and myself, keep in mind we're below 25. If i wanted a fast car, i would either go with the trubo version of this car or maybe get a sports car o.O?

Very easy to end up moving much faster than you intended if you don't watch yourself. I'm in my 50's and my track days are behind me. About the most I do anymore is the occasional TSD rally. Much fun as a daily driver and quite a bit less than a Civic Si, or GTI, not to mention much better looking (IMO).

    Just picked up a dream spec 2013 Turbo 2 days ago - matte grey paint, 6MT, Ultimate Package, and only 72,000km! Add in an intake and diverter valve, and I've been having a blast so far. Power, handling, sound, and styling are all fun, without compromising it's practicality too much.
    This car is often compared against the GTI, Civic SI, Focus ST, etc. But these days, in my market (ON, Canada,) it's about $2-5k CAD cheaper than those options on the used market. Add the extra cost of premium gas (for the Si/GTI,) and the Veloster just became the obvious smiles/dollar winner for me.
    Hoping I'll get many years of fun going forward!

      Actually I have thorough knowledge on the Fiesta and the Veloster. In the categories of torque, performance, steering feel, lower curb weight, transmission, ergonomics, resale value, rear seat headroom, aftermarket availability, utility, and torque vectoring the Fiesta is better. The Veloster clearly wins out in warranty, crash test rating, interior space/volume, fuel tank capacity, and ugliest front fascia. As just a "car", both are comparable and will make fine commuters. For an enthusiast driver, the Ford Fiesta ST is much better. They hype is real. Sorry to pee in your Cheerios, bub.

I ultimately want to purchase a luxury vehicle once I'm done school sometime in the future, but for now, this is very user friendly. All the standard options it has even on the base models are very intriguing for the price. Hyundai warranty is very competitive in the business. I plan to have this car for 4-5 years.

    Having owned a Veloster for over 4 years now I can say I agree with this review. Anybody considering buying this car my recommendation is to buy a reputable set of tires and brake pads as the stock tires/brake pads are poor. A few small upgrades and it handles plenty good for the public roads. That aside its been reliable, fuel efficient, practical, and if purchased new or CPO has a warranty that can't be beat.

    I had a veloster turbo for two years and I was so happy to get rid of it. The handling sucked so bad and the ride wasn't smooth at all when hitting bumps through a corner. That first gear is so short which is why it constantly spins the tires. Just doing 5mph in a parking lot you'd be at 3k rpms, then second would pretty much be stalling. Even fully modded it's still not up to par with the competition. I wouldn't say the car overall sucked but I didn't really know what I was missing out on until I got rid of it. Thanks SWRXF for finally reviewing one. For anybody considering one, take lots of test drives on bumpy roads first. It's not a good car.

      Turbo4Life1217 I owned a 2011 Genesis coupe, and I can safely say I will never own another Hyundai (Most likely). They need quite a bit of refinement. They aren't bad cars, in fact they are far beyond what they used to be, but they still have room to improve. It really sucks too, you buy these sporty cars (Genesis coupe/Veloster Turbo), and they really just don't compete all that well with their competition. Luckily for the both of them, I see tons of people driving them around simply because of how they look, plus they have tons of value. Hopefully the Veloster will do what the 2013+ Genesis coupe did (got significantly better to the previous generation), but only time will tell.

    • @TheAdventureAuto
      @TheAdventureAuto 9 лет назад

      MrGovenator1 yes exactly. Value and looks will sell TONS of cars because you don't know what the car will truly be like until you've had it a while. I used to laugh at hyundai and kia but then became a fan. I'm now back on the other side, but still do hope they can someday create the complete package.

    Veryy nice review. Was waiting for a Veloster video from you. I really dig the design on that car. They sound really nice, you hear that turbo spooling up quick when you have an aftermarket intake on that thing. I would much rather get an Si or GTI, but I could definitely see myself driving this also.

      ***** can't say much about reliability...it is practically new. The furthest I've ever driven has been 300 miles at a time. It has been a year since I bought the R-Spec and I've haven't had a single problem. Plus Hyundai's warranty is a crazy good deal. It ain't the fastest hot-hatch in the world, but it has a nice interior compared to other "faster" cars. Plus several girls liked the look and comfortableness of the ride.

    The main thing that kept me from getting one of these.........only has a back door on one side. Very awkward. I opted to get a Sonic RS 1.4L turbo hatchback. It's funny that i've seen you review almost every other turbo hatchback out there currently except for the RS. Now granted the RS has one of the smallest and least powerful engines of most of them but it is still very fun to drive and has a lot of sporty features. 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. For a 2800 pound car with only 138hp and 148 torque that is pretty good. Very underrated especially when it is compared to the Fiesta ST, which only beats the RS in performance, but in build quality and reliability the RS is miles ahead of it. Not to mention I think the RS rides a lot smoother and handles just as sporty in everyday driving.

    My only input is that the base model and the tech package consist of a backup cam, nav, and a sunroof. There isn't anything different engine wise. I give you points on going through everything in the car, but your reviews aren't good. The only words I hear in the video are "pretty good" and "cool". Don't be afraid to be more critical, that's what reviews are supposed to do. Every detail you don't like you always justify by saying but- or something similar. Honestly, I wouldn't call these videos reviews, they are more like a first look or hands on.

    Love the review, especially love the road view/racing game first person view part, that was exciting.
    The veloster kind of remind me of the Toyota Celica in a way that both car was really weird looking at its time. The Celica's crazing headlight really set it apart from other cars and you either love the design or hate it. For me though, I love the Celica and just not really feeling the looks of the veloster.

      I don't know where you live, but here in Canada, a 2015 Veloster Turbo is 26k. The list of features like a 7 inch nav with rear-view cam, system 450 watts sound system, panoramic sunroof, LED lights front and back. Leather heated seats, heated leather steering wheel lol I could go on for days. Every single car you listed with the features I listed would be 35k+ in Canada.

    I remember when it first came out I was intrigued, went to the dealership and liked it but the one I actually wanted came out being quite a bit more expensive than I expected. I think the Fiesta ST has it beat in just about every enthusiast way now tho, including price per features/trim. Hyundai is slowly creeping out of the great value proposition segment and I dk if their rep is up to speed for that yet...

    The gearbox looks like the same pattern as the Genesis coupe, which takes a little getting used to.. if you shift it like a normal manual it feels super clunky, you have to pull it straight back to shift smoothly and find the gear, took me a few times to train myself to pull down rather than pulling it towards me like I was used to

    Stock tires have to go. Even on the newest ones, get rid of the Khumos put a better tire on it. For even better ride, get a 17" wheel+tire combo instead of the 18 and have a tire with more sidewall to it, it improves the ride quality a lot.
