They should really stop trying to design cars for the "youth market" because nobody in that category has enough money to spend on this.....and when they rarely do, they are usually smart enough to get something better or [depending how you look at it] shallow enough to just get a Mustang because all girls are impressed by Mustangs and pussy is what really matters

Auto makers really need to stop "designing cars for the youth market". They always miss and we end up with a bunch of women in their 50's buy them because "oh hey doesn't that look special?"
Andrew Wittwer Yeah designers really are trying too hard in the car industry. I rented a new-ish Ford Focus before and I couldn't stand how the interior made me feel like a pre-teen boy

4:10 MCM Shoutout! Well done.... FWIW, MCM partnered with Hyundai last year and made a video on taking care of the Matte Plasti-Dip like finish on a Veloster Turbo. These Obscure references are getting fun
In all honestly I have never enjoyed a far review like this before. Your sense of humor, analogies and banter are perfect and I hope one day you become famous for it
Man, these videos are so much more than car reviews - they're like total introspective journeys or analytic musings on general and cultural concepts with a nice little occasional sprinkling of spastic insanity peppered on top. The cars are almost an afterthought... Sort of reminds me of a more neurotic version of Drift0r's CoD gaming videos where he mutes the sounds of the game and just elaborates on his crazy dreams about vampires for eight straight episodes. I think I actually _learn_ stuff from this insanity.
Fiance bought a 2013 N.A. Veloster about 3 months ago. Traded in her 2005 Civic Si which had been nothing short of a british electrical nightmare since we bought the thing. The veloster is smooth past 90 MPH, 6-speed is notchy and responsive, and the steering is heavy enough to give some feedback, though it isn't like the hydraulic or manual steering of yesteryear. I'd say 3 years later, the Veloster is fairing better than your review gave it credit! The asymmetrical door is great when you want to have passengers only load from the non-driver side! The hatch gives it tons of space! The glass roof means way less paint to wax! The only downside is I sometimes burn my leg on the center-mount exhaust when taking groceries out of the trunk.
A non-car person who thinks they're buying a sporty car. Any "youth" driving a manual would bypass this for a used WRX, EVO, S2000, Mustang GT, 350Z/370Z, RX-8, MX-5, M3, M5, etc, etc, etc. Anyone with the bankroll to buy it new would buy the Fiesta or Focus ST, the Fiat 500 Abarth, the new WRX/STi, the current Mustang GT with track pack, etc, etc, etc. This is just a sporty car for people who want to think they've got a sports car without actually doing any research or committing to a real sports car...
"base model" WRX cost $26500. 'base model' focus ST cost $23600. And a V8 mustang costs over $30000. The R-Spec Veloster Turbo costs $22500. Which is at least a grand LESS than the cheapest other car listed. I personally feel as though it LOOKS better than the ST and WRX (at least the new 2015 models). From what i understand it doesn't drive as well or feel as good as the ST, but the fact that you'll stand out from the crowd is always a good feeling. Can't really compare it to the WRX or Mustang as they're in a totally different class of car (AWD and RWD can't really be compared fairly to a FWD car). Honestly, I'd buy one. It's sporty enough, looks sexy as hell, and as i said before, it's just different. Not to mention Hyundai's amazing warranty and the massive steps they've taken in the auto industry since the late 1990's /early 2000's.
Zachary LaVoie The base N/A Veloster is the one at 22-23k. The turbo Velosters are all within the 27-28k range. That IS within the ST, WRX and the outgoing '14 Mustang GT price ranges. You don't stand out in a Veloster, it's a FWD Hyundai for Christ's sake. Could be a rental for all we know.
Zachary LaVoie Yeah good luck finding a dealer selling them spec'd at those prices. I went on my nearest Hyundai dealer's site. All turbos are at 26-28k. Universal Hyundai it's called. My nearest Ford stealership would sell you a STs for 23-25k. Still the Veloster makes no sense. Specially when you remember the Fiesta ST.
lvcsslacker The only way it would have a negative affect is if you put a crankcase breather to make it sound more like a legitimate BOV which gives you compressor surge which is bad.
I own a '13 Veloster Turbo. Hits bumps hard, slower than it looks. It FEELS fast, though. I never have the issues people mention about understeer, it handles quite nicely, and I can outperform my brother's newer (can't remember the year) Mitsubishi Lancer. Even though I know I'll lose it's hella fun to do short little races on the road when I see other fast cars, pushing that tiny engine and hearing that turbo hiss never gets old. The looks I get on my car are something I take pride in (really nice custom black rims and the deep blue paint are pretty eye-catching), even though I know it's just for show. The surround sound in it was decent, but my girlfriend's '15 Dart put it to shame and I wound up revamping my entire sound system. All-in-all, this is a niche car for FUN, not for winning races -- and it does a fantastic job of it.
As a suicide-door configuration it makes more sense, since it's not as asymmetrical. The front doors of the Clubman and Sierra are still the same size. This thing is weird, which isn't bad. It's just weird.
Hyundai had a proper race team in the 90s and they even revived it back now. They competed in WRC with the Hyundai Coupe Kit-Car and the Accent WRC car in the late 90s early '00 and now the i20 WRC car.
As both a Honda guy (before they got rid of all their coupes) and now a Veloster owner living out his 20s in his 30s, I feel personally attacked by this. Hahahaha. This video is fucking great!! Keep it up man!!
I enjoyed the MCM shout out at 4:10~ I love their show, and now, while working on cars, speak only in Australian accents and convert everything to KW... and everything is for 'under fifty bucks'
if nothing else i applaud hyndai for doing something quite difference in terms of the 3-doors thing. im not sure if thats a first but ive literally never seen it done before, and the blending of coupe lines and driver side long door with sedan practicality and easy-to-enter passenger doors is......quite nice. i actually kinda hope the kia stinger concept ends up with a similar configuration
Parents had a ranger with 3 doors, it was hidden behind the passager door. Mother would open her door so I could squeeze out of mine then shut both before begrudgingly trod off to school
The problem I have with Hyundai nowadays is that they went upscale with their pricing strategy....they really don't make cheap, entry level cars anymore. Case in point; the 2014 Accent starts at $14,600....for that kind of money, there are better alternatives.
At least the USA gets the turbo model, here in Brazil we have to make do with the NA version (it doesn't even have direct injection) and there's no manual transmission option. AND it costs about 30 thousand dollars.
It's honestly not a bad car. The engine leaves much to be desired, but I was pleasantly surprised by how it handled. It handles better than a good portion of cars I've driven, including my beloved WRX.
Plus there are 4 or 5 canned tunes that require zero bolt-ons which will bump power by ~40hp. This is one of those cars that will have a tuner renaissance in about 3 years.
@@nalgene247 Where do I find these tunes? I'd love to test out some modifications on my Veloster now that the warranty is expired. I don't really have any experience with modification other than cosmetics but I'd like to start learning how.
I actually really like this car. if you are use to driving KDM cars (because they all kind of fell the same) this car feels great. if you're coming from something else. it's weird. it takes some getting use to. but once you get the hang of it. it's a fantastic car
I wish that door configuration was available on other models. It's brilliant! Statistics say that you drive alone over 90% of the time. So why not have yourself a bigger door? Like in a coupe! And more doors on the passenger side, because you don't care, you don't drive on that side, and it's good for insurance.
Drove an 86 pony for 5 years for my first car back in the 90's. Traded a 24 of Coors beer for it. I beat the living hell out of that car and she took it with a smile. One of the most fun and reliable cars I've ever owned.
I've been thinking about trading in my boring as hell 2013 Elantra for one of these, or even a turbo R-spec. I can't tell if I want it more or less after this video, and that's why I love this channel
I daily a used Veloster Turbo. Absolutely love it. Taken it 20,000 miles and no issues with regular maintenance. Takes sharp corners like a champ. Fits in tight parking spaces and easy to parallel park. I think mine also had some nice options like motorized seat adjustment and heated seats.
@@notgray88 so I actually ended up getting a 2016 Jetta GLI with about 75k miles. Rock solid so far for the 2 years I've had it, and since it's basically a jetta with the GTI motor and a 6 speed, it's actually decently fun
When I think of Hyundai, I think of the company that makes the Genesis Coupe. I don't give a shit about the rest of their cars, but the Genesis Coupe is really something.
I love your videos man. I'm originally from Reading area and have been living in VA since 06 I really miss those windy PA mountain roads. Your intellect couple with the beautiful scenery make me reminisce every time I watch a video.
Also beat GTIs in it too, just gotta shift faster :p That car can hit 60 in 60 seconds if you know what you're doing with the stick. The auto is pretty sluggish
Fatal_Inertia you win off the line because you have so much less power you dont get wheel hop. half the gti owners are people who dont understand the concept of a summer tire or grippy tires in the front. Or a suspension or LSD to handle the power(for insane people). If a mk6 or mk7 GTI had a tune and good tires youd loose by many car lengths. Fiesta tuned also is faster. The Veloster turbo is inadequate compared to other hot hatches. Its just facts. If you like the styling and like your car more power to ya. But in all brutal honesty there are a lot more hot hatches or what ever the fuck a veloster turbo is, with a similar price that are way more capable cars. Not to mention they have real tuning platforms with a lot of R&D put in already.
Listening Point And I'd actually rather have the Giulietta. It's like they took the pretty Giulietta and then gave it a plastic surgery to make it look worse.
RegularCars DeLorean??!! As for the Veloster, maybe the 2014 R-spec might give a little more street credibility to the car and ideas to Hyundai from tuners willing to sacrifice good taste and street manners for additional horsepower or STANCE.
kraenk12 I'm not even a fan of American cars and I have to really, REALLY disagree with that. Kia/Hyundai are the most soulless vehicles on the road (ironic since they have a car called the Soul).
I love the fact that you pronounce Hyundai consistently wrong in all your videos. That little wince I feel every time you say it meshes so well with the overall tone of the channel.
To me, the Veloster is that one kid you had in your arts and crafts class who you thought had down syndrome. I mean three passenger doors? Who did they let design the concept of the car, Top Gear? Who designs a car with only 3 passenger doors!? Did the people at Hyundai smoke some meth and decided "Hey! We should let Jeremy Clarkson design our next car!" If that's the case, they should have let Nissan and Alfa Romeo design the car and build a newer Arna.
Hyundai has really come into their own. 15 years ago, I never thought I'd see a 5.0L V8 400hp Hyundai... but its for sale, right now... 50,000 fucking dollars. Its nice. The Genesis is very nice. What's Buick offering today? Oh a 300hp V6. How's that 0-60? 8 seconds. Oh... How much? $40,000... But then they have a Buick Regal GS. That's always been decidedly sporty, and its a beaut. What are the options? A 4 cylinder turbo. 259hp.
GeminiTIGER Well the Equus is $61,000 not $50,000. And for a savings of $16,000 you can get a Chevy SS with more horsepower. And if $16,000 of savings doesn't matter, then for $2400 more than the Equus you can get a 640hp CTS-V Cadillac. Which is cheaper than its German rivals of BMW, Mercedes, or Audi. But if you just happen to have $61,000 that you just have to spend, there is the Cadillac ATS-V. Although it is a turbo V6 it once again has more power than the Equus at 464hp. So that would be a no on the Hyundai for price for horsepower.
WarmongerSmurfOnXbox I was talking about the Genesis in my post, and comparing it to anything in the 2015 Buick lineup is fair game, IMO. You're talking about the Equus, which is Hyundai's top of the line luxury sedan. Comparing it to a Camaro SS is unfair for both cars, as they're designed for totally different reasons. 400hp in the Equus is more of a luxury trait than a sport one. A lot of luxury cars in its price range have about 400hp - the Equus is neither underpowered or overpowered, just middle of the road. Maybe in the future, Hyunadi will release a sport version of the Equus or Genesis that will compete with the CTS-V. That being said, Hyundai is actually gearing up to enter the pony car wars as we speak. They'll soon introduce a 5.0L V8 model of the Genesis coupe; directly challenging the Mustang GT and Camaro SS. Hyundai will soon have a good answer to everything in the market. Their business model is well researched.
GeminiTIGER No where did I mention a Camaro. But comparing a Chevy SS and a Genesis is fair. Both are four doors family cars, they are both fully loaded around $50,000. And with that the Chevy SS gets WiFi, parking assist, Heads up display, magnetic ride, and Brembo brakes.
I have a recommendation regarding a car that I have not seen requested yet. This is the 2000-2002 Audi (B5) S4. It was the first "affordable" car that came with a twin-turbocharged V6 and can now be had for as low as ~$4000. These cars can also be quickly modified to produce power levels that even make them competitors for low-end supercars. I feel as though there is a very large market for the cars but the people who purchase them always seem to regret it when maintenance bills pile up. I personally own one of these cars and I am located in central Ohio. I would happily let you borrow mine for a review. Thanks!
This is insane. I for one bought a copy of house of leaves, didn’t finish it, and some time after, after getting some money I’ve started to consider buying my first car and the veloster came to mind
i remember back when i was 4 or 5 i thought hyundai was a direct rip off of honda

if nothing else i applaud hyndai for doing something quite difference in terms of the 3-doors thing. im not sure if thats a first but ive literally never seen it done before, and the blending of coupe lines and driver side long door with sedan practicality and easy-to-enter passenger doors is......quite nice.
i actually kinda hope the kia stinger concept ends up with a similar configuration
Parents had a ranger with 3 doors, it was hidden behind the passager door. Mother would open her door so I could squeeze out of mine then shut both before begrudgingly trod off to school
My dad had a 93 mercury villager with 3 doors
The problem I have with Hyundai nowadays is that they went upscale with their pricing strategy....they really don't make cheap, entry level cars anymore. Case in point; the 2014 Accent starts at $14,600....for that kind of money, there are better alternatives.
justsomeguytoyou I don't know dude it's a really nice car. Allot better than things such as the Nissan versa of the time or Nissan altima
@@dean8067
By this point Hyundais should be considered a few ranks higher than Nissan. Nissan is at a free-fall right now.
Kia filled that cheaper market after Hyundai saved their ass from bankruptcy, but Kia are now making the stinger so what the hell do I know.
dude. so much has changed man
Lol 14k for a brand new car that is insane now
At least the USA gets the turbo model, here in Brazil we have to make do with the NA version (it doesn't even have direct injection) and there's no manual transmission option. AND it costs about 30 thousand dollars.
Impressive how you figured out this early that Hyundai was moving up in the world. Look at Hyundai/Kia/Genesis now
Been obvious since the original i30 tbh
It's crazy how your speech about Netflix has so much mpre meaning in 2020...
House of Leaves reference. Dope. Keep up the good work. Not sure how I just found this channel, but I'm glad I did. Thanks!
'Sup Marty and Moog! :D
And more doors on the passenger side, because you don't care, you don't drive on that side, and it's good for insurance.
love the mcm reference :)
Love the Naked Lunch reference!
90's hondas were the bomb
Awesome Mighty Car Mods shout out!
Just bought a 2013 non turbo for a work car. Love it. Great mileage runs smooth shifts well.
I bought one like 3 weeks ago. Absolutely love it.
"Wow that Hyundai is SICK!" - Said no proper car enthusiast ever.
I love your videos man. I'm originally from Reading area and have been living in VA since 06 I really miss those windy PA mountain roads.
Your intellect couple with the beautiful scenery make me reminisce every time I watch a video.
mighty car mods!!!!!!!
PORCUPINE!
Profoundly entertaining review!….. I have no idea what to take away from this
Review a genesis coupe!
Yes!
i have a 2.0 turbo. unfortunately i live in california.
I'd love to see him to a post-2013 model year 3.8 coupe; those things sound great.
I have a bone stock 10 3.8 track coupe.
Hahahahahah the Roman's intro songs are always perfect for the car. Utterly brilliant.
I miss your insane reviews that you used to do before this, like the Volvo reviews you've did. I hope you're planning on making more like those ones
Hang with us, we're going right back down the gutter soon enough, we just have to make it thought a few more special snowflakes first.
RegularCars i'm ready for the meat.
hahaha nice MCM reference, I just found this channel and love it
I'm the only one in the comments who actually owns one of these and I have to say it's not a bad car at all
nope, i've got a 2014 turbo. I love it.
I've got one as well.
Slow.
Beaten by every other car in it's class (Focus ST, GTI, MS3)
The fiesta st isnt faster haha I smack em all the time
Also beat GTIs in it too, just gotta shift faster :p That car can hit 60 in 60 seconds if you know what you're doing with the stick.
So much more than a car review , your writing is so frigin entertaining !
Do a 2013 Dart Turbo!
its just a neon with a new name
Kingck Actually it's an Alfa Romeo Giulietta with a new body.
Listening Point And I'd actually rather have the Giulietta. It's like they took the pretty Giulietta and then gave it a plastic surgery to make it look worse.
Woo Cheol Shin
Plus the Giulietta has loads of heritage and prestige.
***** Well, something needs to beat the 2008-2010 Cobalt SS Turbo...Seems like even the newer fast compacts still can't beat it...for years later :P.
It made me smile to hear the MCM reference. Made me even happier to see the MCM reference noticed by everyone.
Got my 2015 VT and I love it , my first sporty car , use to drive a old suv and a old truck before that , having a lot of fun with it
I have never Laughed and been so intellectually stimulated by a RUclips channel before. I love it
Fantastic as always. Here is an offbeat suggestion...Lexus GX 460. So capable, so versatile, so tough, such good value...so ugly.
as a article once stated' "Its an overweight 4 runner in evening clothes"
ACEcolorado1 Thats like calling an Audi A4 "a surprisingly slow jetta in in a bland tux"
2:11 *Everyone else focusing on the video* :
ME looking to the left: "PREVIA!!!!"
TOO MANY NEW CARS. NEED MORE 80s and 90s CARS.
Hang in there...we're going back to the 1980's soon enough...and how!
RegularCars DeLorean? Please tell me its a DeLorean! XD
RegularCars DeLorean??!!
As for the Veloster, maybe the 2014 R-spec might give a little more street credibility to the car and ideas to Hyundai from tuners willing to sacrifice good taste and street manners for additional horsepower or STANCE.
TheZProtocol A car for the well off Proletariat? The juxtaposition that ultimately made the car fail. False hope. Yes please.
RegularCars Mitsubishi Starion, or Dodge Daytona Turbo perhaps?
C5 or C6 Corvette next. Regular enough to be on "Regular Car Reviews". Hardcore enough to make this guy flip his balls.
Kia/Hyundai, when will you learn?
You'll never be the cool kid no matter how hard you try.
But it is hilarious watching them try.
At least they are more cool than I guess any american brand
kraenk12 I'm not even a fan of American cars and I have to really, REALLY disagree with that.
Kia/Hyundai are the most soulless vehicles on the road (ironic since they have a car called the Soul).
R0b0tR0ck The Soul actually got more soul than a lot of other cars, ironically.
kraenk12 I guess that's true if your idea of soul is a bunch of dancing hamsters.
I love the fact that you pronounce Hyundai consistently wrong in all your videos. That little wince I feel every time you say it meshes so well with the overall tone of the channel.
Sup Marty and Moog!! HAHA Good stuff guys!
I like watching these videos more than the real Top Gear
To me, the Veloster is that one kid you had in your arts and crafts class who you thought had down syndrome. I mean three passenger doors? Who did they let design the concept of the car, Top Gear? Who designs a car with only 3 passenger doors!? Did the people at Hyundai smoke some meth and decided "Hey! We should let Jeremy Clarkson design our next car!" If that's the case, they should have let Nissan and Alfa Romeo design the car and build a newer Arna.
I think Jeremy actually did a article on the V, he despised it.
*****
he absolutely hated it.
self made music in the beginning extended version please
There's a whole album of it!
yeah 151KW!!!!! MAD
I like this episode best, You guys are getting better!
WarmongerSmurfOnXbox Wow, yeah I totally read that wrong. You're talking about the SS sedan, and I thought you were talking about the Camaro SS. smh
GeminiTIGER they're doing the 5.0? Last I heard they were going to go with a 3.3 twin turbo engine. It'd be pretty cool if they did both though
Nice shout-out to Mighty Car Mods (MCM). Keep doing what you're doing. Time for the 944.
ive always said this car is almost as cool as a toaster. i cant get over the fact that its got 3 DOORS! just make it a sedan
Hey I love the videos. Keep it up man.
Hun-day.
You done a great job!
Coop.
Thanks!
Its a nice looking car!
Loved the MightCarMods shout out.
MCM reference
Hahaha...I like how you keep changing the way you say "Hyundai" throughout the video. Lmfao 알고
Ha ha! The car you drove had 5 doors! ( 2:05 )
I think it has 4
4:26 The motorcycle on the road picture, is that Centralia, PA?
“Missingno” not “missingnew”
lmaoo Yonkers mechanics and MCM references... I can't believe you went there. I need to sub now.
Hah, this entire video is pretty much watchable and understandable at 2x Speed.
Its pretty easy to keep up with it :p
I hear you on finishing 'house of leaves.' That was a crawl and I'm pretty sure my eyes were bleeding at the end.
if you sit in the back and youre tall you have to put your head back underneath where the rear window meets the top of the car.
that's most economy class cars.
Same with the Hyundai Tiburon and Genesis. It's just a thing they end up doing a lot. Not bad cars tho
This is insane. I for one bought a copy of house of leaves, didn’t finish it, and some time after, after getting some money I’ve started to consider buying my first car and the veloster came to mind
