    FYI: To push start a car:
    1. Find a hill or find a friend/stranger to push the car
    2. Put the key to the ON position
    3. Push in and hold the clutch pedal while it is in gear (2nd gear might be smoother)
    4. Gain momentum either by gravity or friend
    5. Let go of the clutch, and the car will be running
    *Push starting may be more complicated, which is why I suggested jumper cables.

    A helpful tip to avoid rolling back even an inch , when you have to stop on a hill just pull up the hand break , then when you need to go just do what you do normally ( 1st gear - gas- release the clutch) then when you see the car trying to push forward release the hand break and it will go without rolling back at all

    100% the best how to drive manual tutorial. This is no exageration this is the best. I first came across the part four video and clicked on one of the links to bring me here to part one. I was honestly hesitant to watch so many videos, but what I found was an amazing tutorial with such great information and the moment you mentioned about something about racing I felt like you even had more to offer me. Can I switch from 5 gear into 2 or even 1 gear if I am going really fast (possibly going down a mountain path). What are the rules in changing gears that can't be broken. Or is first gear just used for getting of the line. Sorry if I am sounding really stupid

    • @ColinLeung
      @ColinLeung  8 лет назад +4

      MrDTekisOnline You physically can, but I highly recommend against it especially if you're going fast down a hill. You may damage your gears or spin out.
      Spend some time familiarizing yourself with your car's rpm and speed in each gear. I also have a video on how to downshift. You ideally want to go down to the next lower gear and match the rpm (it will shoot up) per your speed. If you're going too slow (the gas pedal won't be as responsive), downshift to the next lower gear, and repeat as necessary.
      Once you're good with that process, you can downshift skipping to the appropriate gear based on your speed. You can also use your brake to help out. I hope this helps.

      Sports cars like a G35 are a little harder to learn with. With a more standard car like a Civic, the clutch is very easy to use. With a sport car, the catch point is very quick the gears are closer together with a short throw shifter. Typical sports cars nowadays have 6 gears too. Definitely not a good starter point lol

    I've been driving a 2014 Lancer for 4 months now. I mastered driving a manual transmission in less than a month. Took out the car for a spin 4 times a week. I used these videos with a combination of driving alone and having 4 different teachers (friends) teach me some tips for being a better manual transmission driver. Solely basing your learnings from videos like these will not help, you actually have to go out and drive. It helps if you have more than 1 person teaching you.

    • @wes.9353
      @wes.9353 10 лет назад

      Haha you could say that. Out where I live, it pays well for any job you get, and by the time I'm 15, I can have a minimum wage job that pays $15 an hour. Even more, walking dogs and lawns pay $20+, which is a major amount of money for one day to me.

    • @danielelias6274
      @danielelias6274 10 лет назад +1

      LOL. Okay, assuming you have saved at least 8 thousand dollars now, you will not be able to afford the car until you are 18-19 even if you are paid the "$15 minimum". Think about your school work and other things. I'm 17 and I just got my $26k 2004 BMW M3. Trust me I've done the math to get mine and I started at 13. Only help was the actual getting the car because I was not licensed. Get something within your price range before just going out and trying to learn stick on an RX7. It will not be a fun bill you receive for burning the clutch.

      Brandon Thomas also one thing that a lot of beginners struggle with... when the car starts to stall out, you shouldn't stop and wait for it to stall out.. when its idling down/shaking, thats your queue to immediately press the clutch all the way down to save the car from stalling out.

    How does he not stall, when he just lifts the clutch in 1st gear? I thought every car needs a little accelerator push (gas pedal) when moving the car off from a stop...

    • @helovesoatmeal
      @helovesoatmeal 10 лет назад +2

      Because the engine is already moving even though at low speed/RPMs.
      You're going to have to release the clutch slower than you would if you added gas to make the car move and prevent it from stalling. You'll understand once you drive a manual :]
      I can't comfirm it since I haven't driven a high low-end torque car (ex: mustangs) but.. you don't even need to add gas to start since it just pulls hard (if that makes sense).

    • @gram.
      @gram. 10 лет назад +1

      I live in the UK... So I've only ever driven manuals haha (automatics are rare here)... Yeah that's what I mean man, if you just lifted the clutch the car would stall without gas... It takes too long to move off, holding the clutch at the biting point without gas, but you can do it (the car judders and then smooths out once it gets rolling)

    • @SlowMoImpact
      @SlowMoImpact 10 лет назад +1

      thats why you shouldn't call it an accelerator but a gas pedal. it only increases the amount of petrol the engine burns. in reality the idle rpm of the engine will be enough to drive the car so no need to press the gas pedal. however, if you don't let go of the clutch slowly there may not be enough torque in a petrol so the engine can stall. once you are at full speed at that given rpm (so like 5-10km/h perhaps in first gear?) on a flat road the car will continue to drive forward at slow speed without pressing the gas pedal.

    Is it harmful to move the shifter without using the clutch when the engine is off? Also, if you're going fast and you want to slow down and turn, can you simply put it in neutral and slow down by braking, and then put it back into gear when you want to speed up instead of downshifting?

      To answer your second question. Yes. As long as you can do the maneuver smoothly. Note, you will still need to know your car and match the car's speed with the correct gear in order to accelerate. Once you get more practiced, these maneuvers become second nature.
      In that situation, I would Push in the clutch. Downshift into 2nd gear. And very slowly let the clutch out until I feel the car slowing down. You can slow down even quicker by lightly applying the break with your right foot (obviously). Once you're ready to speed up, up shift into the correct gear that will allow you to accelerate.

    I'm missing up when I try to take off from a complete stop. I let go of clutch until I find the catch point then it just jerks me. I press on gas but it just dies

    • @grizzly_magnum9579
      @grizzly_magnum9579 10 лет назад +2

      When it start jerking just push the clutch back in immediately and it'll stop it from dying. If its jerking you may be releasing the clutch to fast or not giving enough gas. Hold the accelerator at a constant RPM (2000-3000) and just release the clutch at a steady smooth SLOW rate.

      sameer ahamed I have had an fr-s in the past. For the same amount of money, I traded it in for an 06 sti to fit my needs. For the amount of money the BRZ would cost, I would suggest a newer WRX if you have the funds. Just my opinion. However, the BRZ is still a great car.

    • @sameerahamed4420

      I found a limited BRZ for $25,000, so should I try to find a better deal with a wrx?

    • @ChefBagel
      @ChefBagel 9 лет назад

      sameer ahamed It's entirely what you prefer, but in my opinion, I would go for a 2015 WRX for that price. If you want to go used, you can save some money and buy a 2011-14 wrx for even less. Keep in mind, the BRZ and WRX are two different animals, so test drive both to see what fits you.

    • @247hotrod2
      @247hotrod2 9 лет назад

      sameer ahamed i wouldnt i love the brz but you mite want think of something like an evo even though its 35,000 but you will save more than enough to pay for it because the insurance is cheaper and purchased my challenger for the same price and the evo is actually cheaper for me my insurance for full coverage on the challenger is $370 for the evo its $240 and my car notes going to stay about the same its going $20 or $40 more

    • @sameerahamed4420

    • @PulpyButtGoo
      @PulpyButtGoo 10 лет назад

      You're just going to have to get used to it, or become fluid enough to where you're done shifting before you turn. Unless you're shifting while you're in a turn, in which case you're just going to have to get used to it.

      Hey man do your research before you do anything. I'm a huge fan of older cars, but their are downsides. The old corvettes have awful handling. Plus insurance will be high and older cars aren't as safe. Trust me I love corvettes( I looked at getting one for a while) but I ended up getting a 2007 Subaru wrx. Which means much better handling, better reliability, and trust me, it's fast.

    When shifting you don't even need to add gas like you would when you first move the car from a stopped position in 1st gear. Literally for example to go from 1st to 2nd shift:
    1.) Let go of accelerator
    2.)Push in clutch
    3.) With clutch still pushed in...shift to 2nd
    4.) Quickly remove foot from clutch
    5.) Start accelerating.
    6. - do same thing for 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, etc.
    The only time you need to "add" some gas is to start moving the car in 1st gear.

    Pretty good lesson. I drove a manual for over 25 years, but was looking for good instructions for my son.
    One thing - I learned the reason to press in the clutch when starting isn't so much for safety (although these days it may be the reason for the interlock), but if you start in neutral, there is slightly more load on the starter (a little bit of the transmission) than when the clutch is in (no transmission at all).

    I decided my first car was going to be a manual. The dealer even drove my car home because I couldn't. I practiced for a few hours, had my friend come with me. The next morning I drove to work. You will stall at a stop light, it happens. But it didn't take me more than a week of regular commute (to work, going out etc) before I felt comfortable. Practice truly does make perfect in this situation.
