    First time I drove manual I was in traffic going uphill on a bridge, after that stressful event, I knew how to drive manual D:

    Don't get into the habit of riding the clutch. It will take 2 more seconds to just put it in neutral, coast, brake, and and back into 1st but you wont fuck up the clutch bearings.

      olivegoddess1 On a hill yes. If you know where the friction point is on your clutch then you can keep your foot on the clutch WHEN STOPPED BRIEFLY and just keep the clutch on the friction point and give it gas to go. If you are stopped for a long time or are moving, throw it in neutral. I wouldn't advise ever coasting slowly on a hill, but you also cannot ride the clutch. Hill traffic is something that takes time for a person to get a feel for in their own car.

      Opticillusion160 Oh ok, thank you! That definitely sounds advanced for me. I just started learning on Tuesday night/Wednesday, on a new manual truck I bought. I've been driving it around to practice, and today I practiced your method of going into neutral, coasting, braking, coasting, etc. It was great for stopsigns! Also fairly good for stoplights! It's true, you don't need to use the clutch for all these things every time. However, I'm not sure my feet are sensitive enough to be able to use that method you described for uphill slow traffic....in time. :) Also, a friend of mine said that there have been times when holding himself in 1st with the clutch saved his life, like waiting to get onto a highway from a stoplight intersection (in a full stop), and a car speeding at 70 behind him. With the clutch down he was able to turn out of the situation very fast, and the car ended up crashing into the other car that was in front of him.....so I guess different methods are appropriate at different times.

      olivegoddess1 Yes, there are situations where keeping your car in gear would be plausible. However, it would be wise once you are lined up at a stoplight or stop sign, to toss it in neutral. The throwout bearing undergoes less stress and if you have an old truck, the clutch cables as well, by not keeping the clutch depressed. But if you are doing a quick stop or are going to moving very quickly once you go, then keeping it in gear is no issue. Again, I'd say on a hill keep your clutch on the friction point with your brake depressed and then let off brake and gas it to go. Or put it in neutral and brake if you'll be stopped for a long time.       It's been over a year, and I just want to say that I feel at ease, for the most part, driving my truck. I love it. I love stick shift! Don't want to go back to automatic! HOWEVER. Very steep hillstops still scare the shit out of me and I have to practice. I also will go into neutral when slowing down now in most situations, but if it's a very busy highway with ridiculous traffic and crazy people weaving around (like on highway 17 in California) then....ain't no way in hell I will EVER get into neutral. That highway is so dangerous and people drive like lunatics.

    I don't recommend driving a manual in rush hour traffic unless you have a lot of experience. In general, our society (USA) is used to automatic vehicles and driving a manual takes patience, something most people are lacking during rush hour.

    Than, you so much! My automatic car just got stolen over the weekend and now I have to drive the husbands car which is actually the same car as yours. I was super nervous last night when he taught me in the driveway but after a few minutes I was ready to go and took the car out on my own. I only stalled twice lol..yay!

    I had this happen to me on the highway. In stop and go traffic, I just stay in 1st gear, apply gas, release the clutch and as soon as I'm at the biting point, I press down the clutch again and coast while in gear and apply the brakes. Rinse and repeat. I usually stay between 1st and 2nd until traffic starts moving smoothly again.

    I can't believe there are that many people out there that can't drive a manual! I passed my driving test many years ago (UK) and manual is the norm. I never drove an auto for about five years after that.I found them boring and lazy to drive.I then got my rally license and driving was a completely different ballgame especially left foot braking,that was tricky in the beginning.Good luck to all out there who are practicing a manual,once you get the hang of it you'll never turn back.

    when u need the clutch:
    -in between every gear change
    -accelerating from a stop in first gear
    -when you are stopped and you are not in neutral
    -when you have speed, and are rolling to a stop in whatever gear you are in, most people will hold the clutch with the brake to come to a full stop. its effective way to save gas that automatic cars cant do, called "coasting".
    and if ur almost out of gas, you can use this technique. pick up speed, clutch in, repeat.

    it's actually very relevant, as you asked a very situational question. there are probably thousands of situational questions to ask about driving a manual, which could all be self-answered by learning, as greenmarine5 said, "how a manual transmission works with the engine".
    same thing with learning anything; learn the principles. don't just memorize as many facts as possible.
    for example, you should already know why you don't need to clutch in when coasting+stopping.

    rolling to a stop in neutral or with the clutch in uses more gas, and puts a bit more wear on the brakes. Because when coasting with the clutch in or in neutral the engine has to use some gas to keep idling, when in gear rolling to a stop, the engine uses no gas because the motion of the car is keeping it revving, and it also slows you down if you gear down. This is only on EFI cars because its programmed into the ecu, cars with carbs can't completely stop the injection of fuel.

    Another quick tip in driving stick in traffic is let the car in front of you build a GOOD lead, about 5 car lengths for me, then i start in 1st and coast to the car in front and repeat. Instead of clutching in and out every single time the car in front moves, i do my method. Your left leg will thank you. Also the car too.

    Let me clear some stuff up for you lol. Most of the tutorials on RUclips say "when braking, push the clutch before the brake". The reason they say this is because while demonstrating it in their video, they're driving at a slow speed (usually in 1st gear). If you're driving 5 mph in 1st gear and hit the brake, you're going to stall. So, in that situation, you'll push the clutch & the brake.
    You only have to push in the clutch "right before" you come to a complete stop (to avoid stalling).

    In most cars, it's perfectly fine to switch gears at 2,000 rpm. You just won't be able to accelerate as quickly compared to shifting at 2,500 - 3,000 rpm. But in traffic, you're not trying to get anywhere quickly, so he shifts pretty early.
    Also because you really shouldn't be driving around in 1st gear, you just use that gear to get moving from a complete stop. So it'll be good to use that technique (shifting to 2nd gear earlier) in a parking lot too.

    i heard you don't always have to downshift to 1st gear at stop and go traffic. this include a STOP sign too, just "clutch" + "brake" at 2nd, then start coasting at 2nd gear. 1st gear is only when starting from a long stop, like your drive way or traffic light.

      EJShelby Yah, in most cases, fine. However, you still need to follow the rules of the road! Try not to do that if there is a jerk officer around. I've seen it happen before. Just look around you before making a rolling stop.

    if the clutch is pressed completely, it is bad only for springs, but they come with clutch mechanism, so basically, you will need to repair the same part if it's broken. it is not recommended to hold clutch for more 10 secs. if you want to roll with no gear, just put it in neutral. you will get the point if you practice :)

    Your clutch and syncros will wear out and hate you much sooner than is reasonable if you follow this advice. Best way to drive in stop and go is to give space and stay in a gear appropriate to roll. If it's slow, either neutral downhill or first if it's a slow uphill; perhaps maybe second. The less you shift the longer your transmission system from flywheel to wheels lasts for a variety of reasons. If you have to rev high in first or second, go for it. Gas and an oil change is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new clutch or tranny job.

    As the guy below said, When braking, you only hold the clutch in, when you are just about to come to a complete stop (to avoid stalling). Ex. When your going about 45-50MPH, and your coming up to a red light, brake as you would any other time, then when you are almost at a complete stop, hold the clutch in. The clutch should only be used for Starting out in first gear, Shifting Gears, and at a complete stop. And Dont ride the clutch. by leaving the clutch partly in at all times while driving.

      +theAZN94 It usually means that there is a slight imbalance between the clutch and the gas just try to find that clutch spot then add gas, you'll get it before long!

    It won't wear out the clutch since it's pressed all the way (meaning it's not in any connection to the engine shaft), but you are correct that it shouldn't be done this way. If your in 2nd, just lift the gas and apply brakes... just before the car stops, press the clutch (in diesel engines you will press it early because of the high torque in low RPM). Driving with the clutch pressed is pointless since you don't use the engine as a brake.

    my point is your question can and should be answered NOT by asking a thousand situational questions or by gaining experience driving stick, but by learning the mechanics/theory behind it all. you can do all of that without ever getting into a car.

    Yes you are correct, if you leave it in gear and if the engine has high enough RPM the ECU will cut off the fuel to the engine - since it's no longer needed.

    You aren't riding it since it's pressed all the way down, but you are correct that you shouldn't press it in until the last moment (depends on the car - you need to press it just before you come to a complete stop). Another thing is that you need to use the brakes more if you press it way before since you aren't braking with your engine....I advise not to follow the instructions in this video....you can ask any good instructor out there and they will say it's incorrect.

    when you are at a complete stop you can hold the clutch in and the brake or you can shift into neutral and just hold the brake down then when you need to move again just go into first again

    Engine braking( allowing the engine to slow the car down while down shifting through gears) is just fine. It is actually better to do that because you will always be in the right gear as opposed to being in neutral then having to fumble for the right gear. Just remember when you engine brake you need to lightly apply your brakes just enough so your tail lights are on so people know you are braking.

    Never coast in neutral:
    1. it's illegal in most countries - safety issue
    2. you will wear out your brakes a lot faster since you aren't using your engine as a brake
    3. you will use more fuel

    If you are fully engaging the clutch, you arent wearing it at all. You hold it in the last 5 metres, but other than that you shouldn't as you no longer have full control of the vehicle.
    Riding the clutch is when its only partly depressed, like if you rest you foot on the clutch pedal which might slightly depress it, thus making the clutch slip, and thus wearing it.

    can you put it in 1st gear, biting point and break? In heavy traffic i Just put my car at the 1st gear biting point and break if the car in front of me is moving i just release the break but my clutch is still at the biting point so i can break it again.

    no, you also use it to slow down. And it needs to be pushed before starting the car and before accelerating at the stop light.

    Coasting with your foot on the clutch for lengthy periods of time will eventually overheat and wear out your throw-out (thrust) bearings. Hence you also want to keep this to a minimum

    What if I have to stop my car I jst press the break pedal thn press the clutch thn shift the gyre to first....let go the brake pedal n keep the clutch pressed bcx my instructor told me that by rathr thn shifting to neutral, shifting to 1st gyre will get u ready to ride again much quicker because beginners take time in resuming which can frustrate the people behind you. ????????

    Yes that is correct, and the reverse gear has no synchro so you need to stop the car completely before you can put it in reverse.

    cars are considered coasting when one have it's foot off gas and car is still going. Though the more correct version of it would be when the car is not CONSUMING gas and still going (in rare cases one might have foot on gas but car is still coasting "not consuming gas but going" because of car problems)

    when you have the clutch pushed in then you can do whatever you want just make sure if your going to stop that it is pushed in or else you will stall if your in gear (watch the rpms)

    In the literal sense yes. But what I mean by engage is engage the clutch pedal. So long as its fully depressed there is no wear. Well you can change gears around corners,, so then you would use the clutch. But yes, a lot of people however still rest there foot on the clutch while driving, which is bad.

    only when shifting from gear to gear you are required to push the clutch (you dont have to but if you are learning follow the right procedure until u can shift without clutch)

    so say im cruising at 45mph and there is a red light ahead. can i shift into neutral and press the brake only (no clutch beside to put it into n) or would i still have to hold the clutch when the car is in neutral and slowing down and coming to complete stop?
    and would i have to downshift from say 5th, to 4th, to 3rd, to 2nd, to 1st, then neutral or would i be able to go from 5th straight to neutral?

    You'll stall if you don't depress it when stopping. (or the not so good way, putting into neutral) if you just use the clutch, not going into neutral, you are able to accelerate out of the way if need be.

    having it in the same gear wont change much except u might stall at a stop... but if u mean downshifting then not really because in emergence braking... even ur a professional and u can downshift and brake hard it still is a shock to our brain and we cannot do complicated manoeuvres like downshift brake. so we clutch brake and control braking power and steering which is already overwhelming :) cheers

    Let's say I'm on the interstate going like 60-70 in 5th or 6th gear and just need to slow down slightly to get over or because of a slower vehicle, can I just brake slightly without the clutch so I won't have to rev to get the RPM's back up?

      yes u can...downshifting u use when....if u want to accelerate fast, pass a car for example, if u driving in down hill u down shift so u dont have to be on the brakes the whole time and u fuck up the brake pads, it keeps its speed steady, u also down shift when u drivin and u about to drive on up hill (so it wont stall)...in bad weather lots of rain or snow its better to drive also arround 4.000rpms in whatever gear u like it all depents how fast ur goin really...keeping high revs u have better control of the car (im not sayin drive all the time in high revs) only in bad weather, it listens to the driver more accurate. or if u racing a buddy and u goin threw traffic like crazy ;)

    it's exactly like you leave your car on downhill in Νeutral. it will reach bigger speed than with gear on..if you can see your car consumption in your screen try it.go downhill and when in neutral it consumes (0.8l/h) but when you engage the gear and don't press the gas pedal it consumes 0.0/100km.

    No, most of the times you should brake before hitting the clutch. The only time you clutch before braking is at very, very slow speeds (5mph-10mph maybe, like in a parking lot). I'm not sure exactly how slow 10mph is because I use km/h, but hopefully you get the idea.

    They probably mean coasting in neutral, because it's dangerous, ex. you see someone driving up behind you and not stopping because they aren't paying attention, you aren't in gear to quickly move away.

    You can brake without holding the clutch in but as the car slows down it will get to the point where you need to press the clutch pedal, otherwise the engine will stall.

    Ok so I have a question... I was driving yesterday and slowed down as I approached a left turn lane but I didn’t completely stop (but slowed down to about 5mph). I was coasting in neutral but then shifted to 1st and the car jumped really hard... made me feel like I messed up the clutch but the car is still running fine after that.
    So, when going at low speed, cruising in neutral and suddenly you need to get into gear again, should you always go to 2nd ???

      I would. I only use 1st gear if I'm coming from a stop. You can use 1st but you'll need to give it adequate gas before the clutch engages (enough gas to match the rpm it usually would run at 5mph. Maybe 2.5k rpm? It's dependent on your car).

    how did you brake while in gear without the clutch pushed in? wouldn't that cause the car to stall?

    Although coasting has its benefits when driving on nearly no gas, other than that you shouldn't really be coasting. You should only have to press the clutch when your coming to a stop in the last 10-5 metres.

      Idk if it's too late but it's same as going into first. You can also go in reverse by giving a bit of gas and it will go by itself without gas while still applying some pressure to clutch

    If the traffic is truly bad I'll lag behind the car in front by a few meters and let the engine take the car along on idle revs in 1st gear, the gap lets you keep to the average speed of the traffic rather than stopping and starting. Better for clutch and brake wear and better on fuel. Plus you don't get "Clutch Leg" (as I like to call it) from exercising the clutch. I can pull this off in my European Diesel car but having never driven a petrol car in traffic I don't know how it would fair.

    Usually I just wait for a decent gap people can find a way around I don't like burning the clutch starting and stopping all the time so instead I just cruise at idle unless I need to stop like construction...

    Driving a manual makes you appreciate being able to travel by car independently imo.
