My Favorite Phone So Far Is NOT Just A Phone 👀

  • The year was 2014 and I bet you forgot that the idea of a phone that could turn into a tablet is actually not new. Taiwanese phone-maker ASUS came up with the bold solution of a tablet that could be powered by your phone when docked, but then the story goes on. If you went back to 2009 you’d see how the Celio RedFly tried to do something similar with Windows Mobile, which by the way, is actually a 2007 idea that Palm invented with the Foleo. And sure, knock yourself out, I’m sure someone else did it first.
The point is that this idea that your phone not being enough is pretty old. Those initial products might have failed because the technology was ahead of its time, but not because they were a solution in search of a problem. I love small tablets with stylus input, and sure, I also love my phone if its size doesn’t get out of hand, but I hate carrying both. I hate having to keep files on one and then transfer them to another, or to depend on slow internet to sync them up.
All I want is one device that can do multiple things, and it’s crazy to think that a different version of the past came to solve the problem. Phones were folding more than 25 years ago because the shape of a handset only made sense half the time.
    (come with me audio)
On that same premise, sometimes my phone is not enough, and sometimes my tablet is too much, but to not have to choose what to bring makes all the difference in the world. I’m Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and after a couple of months with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it’s time for our extended review.

Hinge is a little creaky but that's to be expected of a moving part after a while. No battery problems whatsoever. On calls all day, using the inner screen to check plans, note taking, drawing, getting home and using it for media consumption or playing games (original Doom is a gem on this), I only get low battery around 11pm!!! Love it, it killed my Surface Pro 8, which I was in love with. I'm only swapping it for a Z Fold with a built in s pen.

I agree. This was my first new flagship. The only thing that would ever pull me away from my refurbished Note was a foldable. When I saw the trade-in preorder deals, I pre-ordered the Fold 4. LOVE it.
If you try to do everything on your phone before opening your tablet/laptop/desktop, this is the phone for you. If you worry about battery life, it's fine. Not great but not bad. I mostly use the large inner screen. About 5% of the time I'll use the cover. Even then, it's just for opening an app quickly and then switching to the big one. I use a lot of multitasking too and the spen. The phone has never died on me but I've been on the verge of dying at night. That's why I only use AOD when charging (have a Bixby routine to automate that). AOD will run you about 1% per hour. That adds up.
You might stuggle to find the perfect case. That's been annoying for me.

I started out with the Fold3 and it was really good, but not great. I was constantly disappointed with the cameras, especially because I carried around my Note20 Ultra with me and loved the prior year's cameras to the latest and greatest. I wasn't going to upgrade to the 4, but I saw it in person and typing on the front display made a world of difference with the slight width increase. Pre-ordered it 2 days before launch and still got it on time. The improvements have made me fall in love with foldables all over again! This phone is really refined from the previous generations. I still hope the 5 has an S Pen silo, at least S22 Ultra cameras, and a wider, more normal looking front display, leaving there to also be a wider main display.

Excellent video Jamie. I've been very pleased with my zx4, crease, don't bother me, camera, perfectly fine for my use. The two negative things I can think of is that 1: the Zx4 did not come with a pre-installed screen protector on the outer screen like it's predeccessor did, that really strikes me as stingy. Also, even though the leather itself stained rather quickly, I loved the form factor of the Leather Standing Cover with the built in finger loop, made me feel far more at ease holding it. Will be interesting to see how this year's foldables will turn out.

That is what the Fold4 is worth. They fall in price badly as no one wants a secondhand folding device due to the risk. This has been hidden by Samsung making BIG losses by giving higher trade ins than worth. It shows that foldable success is really based on marketing and trade-in loss leaders. The reality is that if you upgraded every year, you would be throwing $1000 away per upgrade. People are now realising the truth.

    • @fuzz33594

The outer screen improvement was just sufficient to be usable daily, but the inner screen was still awful to use regularly. Until I installed matte screen protectors. I always use them on my phones because they effectively eliminate glare and fingerprints. To say it was totally transformative is an understatement. I LOVE my fold now and truly wish the screen came from samsung with a non gloss finish.

Fold 4 is just as amazing as it looks. A class of its own that stands out from the crowd. Just love using it.😊

Been reading and watching a lot of videos on the Fold, so I decided to give the Fold 3 a shot. Bought a new unlocked T-mobile, flashed it myself to Android 13 and I have to say I really love it. Not because it's my newest and latest toy but the concept. As Jaime says, it's an all-in-one, and yes, not perfect but close. Just ordered the Samsung Amarrid carbon case and Fols S pen. Makes I'm fine for a while. Probably trade it in for the Fold 5 of perhaps go Pixel Fold when they hit the market.

Hey man - your news papers and magazines all have creases down the middle. Remember those "centrefolds"?

  • @oofradio-michaeliafrato-kd5691

Great review. Only comment. Gboard works well on both screens and will do both a regular keyboard outside and a split one inside.

Jaime right. The Galaxy Z-Fold3-4 is the #HolyGrail. The narrow front screen is an issue if you have big hands. I picked up a Galaxy S22 Ultra for the car in a standard portrait car mount and never used it. It is very wide, so it is easier to type on. but the Z-Fold3-4 does everything else better, especially for heavy media viewing and urban warriors on the go. New 50MP camera in the Z-Fold4, bests the Z-Fold3 cameras.
After 18 months, I recently started to see the screen protector start to delaminate all along the crease top to bottom. But it doesn't effect what you are viewing on the AMOLED screen. This is the screen protector that you never remove, not the thin glass screen, so IQ isn;t effected. So you need the insurance.
Pro-Tip: It might be that when sleeping and charging your phone folded closed there is heat buildup over many hours, causing the screen protector to delaminate over many months. Try storing your phone open when sleeping and charging, to preserve your screen protector.

i really wanted to buy it last year, but gave up when i tried it. Front screen is just too narrow.. images on any social media are super small, typing is a disaster and that crease inside is really much worse than i thought. I got myself S22U and waiting for Fold5, hoping that they'll fix what competition is already doing (i am not considering buying competitors though because of their cameras).

Bonne continuation.

The Gboard (keyboard) also supports foldable devices and is the one I use in my Galaxy Z Fold 4

I was a 11year iphone user. Now im rocking z fold 4. Its a great device. Fluid, its also a tablet. Ofcourse battery life is not that good as my previous iphone 13 pro max but still im going through the day with no problem. Android matured so much that i love it and dont see much difference vs IOS. Apples system from version to version is starting to be even buggier.

The Fold 3 was my first folding phone and still using it now. I rock it naked and the only thing i had to replace was the screen protector. Waiting for the Fold 5 to upgrade since I can never go back to a slab phone.

My Fold 3 is one year old this month. The internal screen protector has developed a "spot" where I have used my thumb to scroll. And I still owe a ton for it. Very frustrating.

My main complaint is that it doesn't have their flagship camera system. I've had fold 1 for 3 years, no issues. I bought fold 4 last year and the inside big screen has given up. It is with Samsung for screen replacement now. Guess this can happen with foldable technology.

One thing that I'll give props to samsung is there one ui 5 . And the good lock module
I have been a long time iphone user and still use today but I have been using the fold 4 as a secondary phone and the interference of samsung is more evolved and better than iphone it's just iphone is smooth and samsung gets choppy a bit . But still I m using more samsung than iphone in my daily life as the fold factor is on a new level
