As a Apple user, I’m glad that Google is trying to work around the issues with iMessage. It shouldn’t matter what device you have. The way people communicate shouldn’t be limited by device and it’s ecosystem. This is why I love Discord.

You are right, it shouldn’t matter what device you have. Thank God Apple allow you to text people in the same conversation as being able to iMessage them!
RCS now has the ability to reply to specific texts, and to me that's the biggest thing missing in mixed iMessage/SMS groups
When I communicate with my family in South America it’s almost always WhatsApp and they always send voice memos. It’s funny how different communication norms varies depending on your country.
In the Philippines, we’re using Facebook Messenger. 😂 So annoying actually.
Same with my Argentine friends.
I use WhatsApp as my main messaging app but I hate voice notes, especially when I'm busy or somewhere where I can't listen to them and people are somehow expecting me to reply immediately.
I thinks its down to marketing
If everyone used Whatsapp, this problem would be solved.
Voice notes are extremely common in South Africa though. They’re basically replacing texts. Old non English Speaking and non tech savvy folks really get the most out of them as well, so the transcribe feature is dope.

I'm genuinely puzzled with this issue. US based RUclips is the *only* place I've heard of this issue. The rest of the world just keep going along with the various messaging apps out there. WhatsApp mostly, but also Telegram, FB Messenger etc.
I'm from the US, lived in several states, and I only ever hear about this issue on youtube. I don't know where in the real world people are this concerned with their messaging app and what color bubbles people have.

In the US Apple has a large enough marketshare and brand loyal customers for this to be an issue. That is not the case in other parts of the world, which is why you'll only hear US based techies talking about this. The rest of the world is mostly on Android so iMessage users are in a minority and don't get annoyed when they text android users.
am from india, and i only use native messaging app for service message like from bank, food delivery, courier, etc i very rearely use this for chat, so i never really care what every they do
I'm a Pixel and iPhone user and I still find it crazy how it’s almost 2023 and we still have this whole messaging fiasco. Everyone should be able to communicate with each other without having all these headaches like damn it’s a message it’s not that serious lol.

I more or less hate voice messages because they're harder to reference later, and you have to focus more while listening to the message when the person's can't form their message clearly and is thinking of how to say things while you're trying to piece together what they're trying to say
When I remember something in a chat and want to reference the part of the chat when we were discussing it having voice messages instead means I can't use the search feature to find the message and I have to listen to random voice messages trying to find that thing that was said lol
I can't imagine a world in which you can't just send a message to someone without thinking about it. In the rest of the world we use WhatsApp or telegram and we're happy👍🏼
The problem is that those are private services. I live in Italy and here everybody uses whatsapp. The other day it went down for 2/3 hours and it was a mess, nobody was able to communicate via messages. Having a globally available protocol for message communication (as we have with emails, phone calls...) and not having to rely on only one company/app would be awesome

@@domenicoprocopio8007 true. But honestly, having to wait 3 hours once every year or several years sounds like no big deal considering how convenient it is. In an ideal world everyone should be using the stock messaging app in their phones and there shouldn't be any problem, but we know apple might never adopt RCS and even if they did, that would literally have little to no impact on a global scale, it would mostly benefit Americans and Canadians maybe, since nobody is going to convince a single person to switch from a messaging app to another.

Everyone at my work has an iPhone, and I'm usually the only person that causes the group chat bubble to be "green", and I would always get the "laughed at an image" text when someone reacts to an image in the group chat. My coworkers know that I don't get the emoji react, and they make jokes about it sometimes (not in a mean way). Now, I can't wait to get back at all of them with the new update that lets me see the emoji reaction and REACT BACK, they will get the "laughed at an image" text from me all the freaking time! Can't wait to have it on my Pixel 6 Pro! Lol

I think RCS is inevitable. On another note, I wish the Messages app came with Chat features already on by default so that all Android users who have Chat capabilities on their devices don't have to worry about switching them on.
I think it does if you buy a new phone at least on Samsung. I could be wrong
@@mynamesnotimportant6941 I think it asks you. Though, I switched to Samsung's sms app as it has some features I appreciate more, like scheduling a sms. I write it at 4AM, but I schedule sending it at 9AM. I make sure I reply or send some text, but it gets sent when I want. I love this feature!

Sending voice messages is a big thing in the likes of the UK and Ireland and actually hate when people send them. As you ain’t always in a position to listen to a message but you’d be able to read a text

i believe there's a line in how much American culture can influence the rest of the world. I'm from a Latin American country 🇩🇴 where virtually everyone uses Whatsapp exclusively. iPhones there are incredibly popular there but little people care to use iMessage. Whatsapp is the standard choice. Spanish speakers LOVE to send voice memos. maybe you don't see it like this but to make sense in Spanish lots of words are required. people would rather put their thoughts on voice memo as it is much easier and faster. I live in the US and use iMessage mainly with coworkers and people i meet here, but among my Hispanic community is Whatsapp. also Whatsapp feels smoother when sending voice memos, they've nailed the experience even letting you play them at different speeds. Latin America doesn't want Google to make an Android version of iMessage, because they don't even use iMessage. I think this is a US thing, or more specifically a US tech community thing.

The entire internet is built on open standards. It wouldn't be what it is today if every company did things their own way to try assert a monopoly over others. Collaboration makes for better products for everyone.
They should make unread/new texts standout. Give us custom themes for Messages and personalized colors for those who are most important
If you have Android 12 or later, you can personalize the colors as you change the OS color theme.

Google Messages is becoming such a great app. I've been in the beta program for this app and I love it, I get all of the features before they get released.
Apple is such an ignorant company and their own users are starting to finally see this. Google tries the best as possible to make things fair for everyone and I'm glad they are making RCS mainstream, eventually Apple will have to adopt it, just like usb-c lol.
Well I think of the “Jack of all trades, master of none” argument when it comes to APPLE VS GOOGLE (specifically Samsung). Apple “mastered” their craft, they literally came out with the “perfect phone” (over a decade ago), and though there have been marginal differences, nothing has been DRASTIC, especially after Steve Jobs passed. But “if it’s not broken, why fix it”. Many people appreciate the simplicity, efficiency and security of the phone. however, when it comes to android phones, they’re more of a Jack of all trades. So you get a little bit of everything, but with with that sometimes comes the glitches, the complications, lack of fluidity, over-stimulation. It’s about picking what features are more important.

As someone outside of US, I really don’t understand the reluctance to use Whatsapp - which I find as a best Universal App. All the features that are been talked about (in iMessage and Google RCS) & some unique to Whatsapp - Star Messages, 24hr Status, Reply to specific message, Voice memos, Audio/Video Call, Reacts to Message, Large Groups, search within Conversations, check how many groups you have common with same person, transfer all message data from iOS to Android or vice-versa, etc.

11:50 using voice messages over voice to text is incredibly common in the UK at least amongst younger people. Having these moved to text would be great because I have literally never listened to voice messages sent to me haha

It's also super common in Asia. I mean, I dislike using it myself but I have received quite a few. I think it's less commonly used in US, and this channel tends to have a more American-centric viewpoint. But having transcription would be nice for the reasons mentioned here, compared to having to listen to it with headphones etc.
Yep, my thoughts exactly. A message app is not meant for voice messages. I'm not there to listen, I'm there to read.
I think there's still a place for voice recordings over speech to text as a sender, as sometimes, especially with non-English names, speech to text can struggle; so if you send it as a recordning, then if the transcript is inaccurate the recipient can just listen instead. And of course you can just check the results of speech to text before sending, but if you need to send a quick message, sometimes that's time you don't want to take.
also, I usually would prefer to hear someone's voice over reading text and having to divert my eyes from what I'm doing
Understand this perfectly because I received my reactions as texts with my old galaxy s10 plus. Now with my galaxy s22 I see the reactions from apple users as emojis, and when I react they see a message now lol. Really flipped it around on them.

Facebook messenger is popular af in the Philippines, it's basically the default app for most Filipinos and regardless of phone brand, it's just uniform to everyone
About voice memos - in Brasil, where whatsapp is the making texting platform, voice memos are VERY common, specially in places where older people didn't have the opportunity to properly learn how to write and read. So maybe the voice memos feature is focused on other countries who use it more
Brazilian culture doesn’t frown on people playing audio from their phones in public though.

Oke so in the EU, SMS was way to expensive for way to long, no joke 25 euro cents in the beginning or equal to one call minute. while the USA the had unlimited sms way sooner, so me, from the netherlands, has not used sms for 10 years, i just use it to receive log in codes basically. its all whatsapp and or telegram, cross devices, no issue
its so weird how one small thing changed that whole tech behind it. no one talks about blue/green bubles here
As people have pointed out in comments, iMessage is only meant for US. Most countries in the world rely on other platforms, that work across multiple different device vendors.
The most important thing they need to work on is being able to send photos/videos without it looking like it was sent from a flip phone. As an iPhone user, I don’t care about green or blue bubbles. I care about being able to send awesome pics and videos to my friends and family via text.
Same for iPhone users, every video and photos that come from iPhone look bad on Android phones but android to android is high definition....is apple that's not allowing it.....u can send 4k video from android to android....

Haha, this is the most anecdotal proof. "Who still sends voice message, instead of speech to text?" A lot of people do! Not only old folks. Just because you never use it or you never get a voice message doesn't mean nobody uses it.
I am so happy to hear this. My wife and I have Pixel phones while rest of her and my family have iPhones. I stopped buying Apple devices 5 years ago because of their ecosystem approach. By doing so I have saved a decent amount of money as Apple products tend to be pricier.

@@doboy930 not sure how many iPhone users use an iPhone for 5 years. None of my friends or family members have a 5 year old iPhone. Apple's loyal fanbase and closed ecosystem keeps the price higher.
I was an early adopter of iPhone and iPad. I used iPhones for about 10 years. Gradually I got annoyed with Apple's walled garden approach. So I switched to Pixel 2xl in 2017. Since then my wife and I have been on Pixel phones as these are cheaper compared to Samsung but still good devices, at least for our usage.
Personally, I don't see a point in spending $1,000 on a phone. If I ever want to spend that kind of money on a phone it would probably be Galaxy Fold which I almost bought a couple of weeks ago. But now I am going to get two Pixel 7 for my wife and I which will cost $250 each after device trade ins.
@@productreview199 Exactly... Did iPhone for 3 years while simultaneously using the Nexus line for work. While Apple did offer many great features as their ecosystem evolved, trying to justify the price gap became less and less logical for my personal use. Been a Google phone user ever since. Cheap, clean and, now with the Pixel line, have great cameras.
@@productreview199 the point is u have the option to use one for 5 years. Also Not everyone can afford a new iPhone so those people go with older iphones that they bought from someone but those phones still are operating on the same OS as the newer phones. So if u wanted to make a 5 year investment for a phone then $1000 does not sound too crazy. PLUS most people upgrade anyways before they even pay the phone off so therefore they never paid $1000 for the phone. If I'm going to spend $1000 its going to be for a phone that will be supported longer.

As someone with both an iPhone and a Pixel, the UX for emoji reactions on Android are much nicer. Did not know they'd added a Reply feature... That was really the only thing lacking that I missed in RCS.

@@doboy930 You just described pretty much all emoticons 🤔... Either way, the emoticons and their animations are more visually satisfying than iOS's implementation, which look quite dated to me now.
I think that's actually the problem across most of the iOS UI, it's started to feel dated compared to Google's Material design language.
Here in German you can use WhatsApp or hope someone digs thru folders to find the stock app to see your text ...while cursing you.
Here's one for you.. A 20 something lad I used to work with said that he 'couldn't date anyone who didn't have an iPhone' when asked why, he said that iMessage lets he be shady over ghosting girls or feed them a line.. ITS A PHONE. People are too hard wired into their mobiles.
I'm genuinely sorry for these people who are getting these features and talking about it when we have had them for ages in WhatsApp
iMessage was the first service that allowed free unlimited text in the US. Carriers had a hissy-fit and Apple was only allowed to keep it within the ecosystem. The carriers had much more control over your phone’s functionality than people realize. One carrier refused to allow searches while on a call. Many Apple users are not interested in WhatsApp or messenger since they are owned by Facebook. Facebook is not a platform you use if you expect privacy or boundaries respected.
And Apple is the face of privacy. OK

I never imagined messaging would become so damn fragmented. Right now i use SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Signal and Instagram DM. Unreal.
I wish the EU forces Apple to use RCS.
This is a non-issue for european countries, here SMS are practically not used anymore, we mostly use Whatsapp so no one cares about RCS

@@ik1vqu ya same here, I'm in Canada and most of my messaging is WhatsApp. But because there's a high number of iPhone users in North America, which use iMessage, so they don't use nor do they know about WhatsApp.
I thought messages/sms was pretty much only used for confirmation messages. I haven't received an SMS in the last 5 years from a person. Is this still a thing in US?
Oh yeah, SMS is what runs Android. The US isn't big on WhatsApp or anything else.
It's the dominant method of communication between iPhones and Androids. Virtually everyone in the US uses the default message app on their phone. WhatsApp is mainly used for international communication, and barely anyone uses Telegram.
@@brandonw7390 Android nowadays uses RCS and falls back on SMS in case of well, iphones or older phones.
@@Dwivil RCS isn't widely supported by all carriers. That is why Google made their own RCS network with Google Messages. RCS sucks as a whole when not through Google Messages.
Voice memos are way more common outside of the US. Also, if you're bilingual it's way faster to send a voice memo than changing the keyboard to that other language. Voice to text in a different language is spotty at best

I use the split screen app functionality all the time now that I know how to do it. There's lots of situations where I need to read something from one app and type it into another, so it's way better not having to swap between the two.
whatsapp, telegram and all other ip based chat services has all these features for a long time and i cannot understand why this green bubble and blue bubble thing is so hyped up
All that is Facebook owned. So if u expect sensitive info to stay private between messages, or for them to not track u..there's no guarantee. WhatsApp also still looks like it's 7 yr outdated lol

@@ghananandannabathula667 That's fair, I mean apple is usually behind anyway lol. But it's just the interface for WA looks tacky, the calls/video calling isn't the best either of course. Like I enjoy how clean something like Signal looks.
The bubble thing is whatever- dumb. Main thing is, messages should be sent in a safe, trusted, and quick manner across the world. Without shit carrier services. The ability to voice call/text or search through txt history, reliably, is extra.
One thing with voice-to-text in messages is if you decide "now or later" and go with "now", GBoard supports a lot of (all?) languages, but with "later" only a few languages are supported in transcribe.

I'm an iPhone user and I haven't sent an SMS to real people in 7 or 8 years. These days I pretty much only send an SMS when texting those robot numbers like my carrier or to pay for parking.
The people I interact with who don't have iPhones are all on Snapchat, Twitter or Telegram anyway. Typically the only reason I get someone's number is to send them an iMessage game such as 8 Ball pool or to send a video without compression.

I also have cochlear implants so I can essentially stream audio from my phone to my brain at any time, as if you’re wearing AirPods all day lol
And the hearing aid or cochlear experience on android when I tried it last year was just horrible. One of the reasons I’m sticking with iOS for now - that and the ugly emojis and bad in app camera support (I use Snapchat a lot)

I got my entire family to download Signal since it has a very similar feature set to Imessage.
I wish. My friend tried, but gave up. He just didn't like messing with one app to message me whereas everyone else in his life was using SMS/iMessage.

@@eddieevangelista6014 It's encrypted, end-to-end, to where Signal can't see your messages. Apple states they can't see your iMessages as well. It offers read receipts, like iMessage. It offers voice and video calls as well, though Apple splits those off into FaceTime. It's open-source, so people can inspect the code, I believe. Signal is platform agnostic, so an iOS (iPhone) user and Android user can have a much more similar experience. iMessage is pretty much limited to iPhone users.

(-: Unfortunately, in the US many people are like my friend and don't want to or outright refuse to use anything other than their default SMS app or iMessage, whatever came with their phone. He (hopefully) joked "You can be my friend when you're on iPhone again." I feel like Europe and the rest of the world kind of figured this out, but a lot of them are maybe too reliant on WhatsApp in particular.
I use Google messages for chatting since the beginning of RCS. It had some issues , and still has , BUT , the whole experience is getting better and better

Always use it in WhatsApp. Also, I mostly send and receive from friends voice notes in WhatsApp. It's really useful if you don't feel like typing everything or you're in a (heated) conversation and need to get everything out instead of typing forever
there's only two non band-aid solutions to this. 1. apple suports RCS. 2. Apple makes an imessage android app. this is funny and as an ios person, I really do hope apple eventually cracks. Layering on dumb logic on top of SMS just creates a silly mess of code that never solves the core of the problem

We (EU) are already in the process of doing something to impose RCS to everyone. There is a law project that will force company behind messaging apps to be inter-operable (ie: messaging someone on signal from imessage or whatever combo you are thinking about)
If an iMessage user gets annoyed at the reactions that Android users can now send, send those iMessge users screenshots that show the reactions working the way they are supposed to in Google Messages. Then gaslight the iMessage user and just say "idk man I think your phone is just broken, mine is doing reactions just fine." Make Apple's users mad at Apple.
I use my default messaging app only for getting otp and spam 😂.

I barely text iPhone users through SMS because we use Messenger or something else. But a few months ago, I texted an iPhone user through Google Messages, she reacted with a thumbs up emoji, and I got the emoji in the corner of my message bubble. I don't know if it's just the thumb emojis. I am part of the Google Messages beta
Has apple not already fixed it? I’m in a family group chat that used to have all those dumb messages, but now it’s showing the reaction correctly, I’m on the latest iOS. It looks like it literally went through the chat history and removed the messages and put in the reactions.
I was texting my mom who does not use RCS or iPhone and noticed that I could use emoji reactions and thought it was a fluke. I had no clue that was so far from the truth!
1) I have put off watching this channel cause I felt like it was just like every other tech talk channel, I was wrong and this is a great format!
2) my daily phone is an iphone and I've come from Android, green bubles don't bother me at all and I just don't understand the people that look down on others because of it.
3) iphones experience on texting has been better than androids and this excites me to see all the new abilities that Google is attempting to bake into it's phones and software.
4) Time for a phone switch!
The only problem with Google doing anything is that they have a history of randomly shutting down their own apps for no reason at all.
If Apple hard codes reactions it doesn't really solve the big issue for me, sms will still not be a secure way to message. This is why I've been using Signal and Whatsapp as much as possible lately (signal is the preference since it's open source). Takes it out of the hands of Apple and Google.

Who outside the USA even realizes that iMessage and Google Messages exist? Literally everyone else are just using WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal, which are universal and in case of Signal even more private anyway (for more privacy you could use something that doesnt require you to tell the provider your phone number).
To you question who uses voice mails: I do sometimes, when it would otherwise be a lot of text. Also listening to voice mails is much easier and safer to do in a car, than actually read, which would be dangerously distracting as a driver. So voice mails are definitely useful.
The line between their tables is NOT ALIGNED with the panels in the background, and it's DRIVING ME NUTS! :)

Here in India a lot of people use voice memos in WhatsApp. It's just easier to do that when you have a lot to communicate instead of typing a super long message. Also in most apps if you play the voice note and hold your phone up to your ear it plays through the earpiece so you don't need headphones all the time.
When Google enabled RCS here our messages just got bombarded with more spam and ads by companies with images gifs etc. It got so bad that they temporarily turned the feature off for businesses till they could make a solution.

The problem is Apple. It isn't the bubble color. It's the issues actually sending an receiving messages between the two platforms at times with poor service or on wifi only txt service. It makes the communication between the two unreliable.
Feature parity with iMessage ofcourse but RCS is now getting closer to the features of WhatsApp as well, with the ability to reply to a specific message and emoji reactions e.t.c so many people on android use WhatsApp just because of the featureless native messege app

This is such a US problem 🤣 I currently live in the US but in my home country SMS is considered vintage and you’re just expected to use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Telegram even iPhone users.

All of the things mentioned already exist on WhatsApp or Telegram so it's good that Google it's catching up. About the use of voice messages/memos and voice to text feature, here in Argentina we use a lot of voice messages/memos and mostly never voice to text feature. I think one of the reasons it's that it isn't that advanced in spanish and that SMS aren't free so we switched to WhatsApp years ago.
SMS isn't all inclusive with calls over there? No wonder you need a separate application to DL and log into just to send a text message.
@@Sb129I haven't used SMS for a long time, but I remember that you had to buy a service plan for, for example 500 messages (it wasn't cheap) and if you used more than 500 messages every SMS had a differential cost that made you think twice before sending it or before texting two messages rather than one. So when WhatsApp came over, offering infinite messages for free and more liberty (on SMS sending images also had a differential cost, for example), we all switched.
@@robertcarolinar We also used to get charged per text but then the government started looking into anti-trust stuff so they laid off. Now it is more about data than actual calls or texts so almost all our plans include unlimited calls and texts. This all occurred in the early 2000s for us.

I don't remember the details that well but first BBM from Blackberry was a real novelty to send unlimited texts and then we started using WhatsApp as the smartphones met the technical requirements. I remember sending e-mails using WiFi instead of SMS so I didn't get charged. 🤣🤣
@@robertcarolinar Yeah, I was 13 in 2005 and I definitely remember texts being 50 cents per message. Most cellular plans didn't even include text messaging by default so you couldn't send any. By the time I was in high school 2008ish texts were basically unlimited (as in unlimited minutes for calling and like 5000 texts)
A big reason why people are not doing Voice-to-text is that there are like 5 out of 200 languages supported and not everybody on Earth happens to speak them

I guess it depends on where you live. I live in Canada, and everyone I know uses iMessage, except one of my cousins who has a Samsung, and we text via SMS.

Voice memos are definitely a thing outside of the US. It is convenient especially when you have your hand full

Christ man, I can't wait until Android and iOS get to a closer common ground because sms/mms in 2022 and onward is ridiculous. In my circle, almost everyone uses iMessage, except my dad (so I only get to use rcs features with him), and I only use WhatsApp for work.
Not everyone is just going to switch over to WhatsApp, Telegram, or [insert whatever app your country uses], especially in the USA. We almost exclusively rely on the default apps for whatever reason... And honestly, Google shouldn't even be in the position it's in right now. They've literally soft-nuked all of their great potential iMessage-like apps, leaving us with the mess we're in now. It's so frustrating 🤦🏾♂️
The reason people in other countries use whatapp and other apps is because their carriers charge per message sent whereas in the US most contracts now include unlimited texting so there is no reason to seek out the cheaper alternatives like whatsapp etc.

Immigrant in the US here. The rest of the world uses Whatsapp, Messenger, etc because it costs money to send text. Over in the US mobile phone plan is on the high side ($40-70/month) but it's unlimited call and text. That's why people here prefer to use phone numbers - just more convenient, plus you don't have to give anyone your social media.
I was literally just thinking about this a few days ago, Android / Google messages somehow detecting that "generic reaction text" that iPhones will send other phones in a group conversation, and instead of showing it, somehow translating it to also give a reaction to the appropriate message. (Edit: Also, this was absolutely awful when somebody reacted to a long message, because that "reaction text" would copy and paste the entire damn thing again 😂)

It’s a profit for them keeping the iMessage bullying going. Hilarious cause coming up android was more popular in America for a while than iOS. It’s only the past few years where iPhone overtook it. And it’s honestly sad lol android is a better value all the way especially flagships
I love(d) splitscreen, on my old honor 9 I used it to watch videos/streams at the top and at the bottom chat or google stuff. The way it worked is you basically had the top app pinned and could use the bottom 50-66% of the screen to use all other supported apps. Now with Android 12/13 (Pixel 6), you can only split screen apps that you have in the app log, it will completely tab out of the top app when splitting and you have to reopen the top app and do a new split for the bottom app which makes it more or less unusable :(

I think I exclusively use voice notes, most of my friends do as well. I’m not exactly sure when the full switch occurred but I think greater functionality with this feature would be incredibly useful
Pixel 7 auto transcribes audio messages :)
My Samsung transcribes what I send (optionally) for the reader, but for receiving that could be handy. Worst case scenario you could use Live Caption.
