    Also I have never used the transparency mask in Ai,
    I always do things through clipping masks, but this seems like a good idea (since the clipping mask method requires a lot of clicking to get into isolation mode, and to fiddle with the base object to find the outlines..., it's a whole thing)
    I tried your method now, and it seems to be really good
    and you are right important thing is to double check, if you really really have 100% black as fill
    but it seems like a nice tool if you don't want to have full transparency, so I'm glad I made the mistake to learn how to use it for more things
    thanks

      @@LearnUpstairs I like illustrator way more! You can do mostly everything with the toolboxes without having to go to the top row menu.
      And the fact that artboards are disconnected from the drawing area gives you so much more freedom, even if it is just making notes on the side.
      And it seems more light weight and quicker.
      I always feel so restricted in Photoshop. In Photoshop I feel like I'm doing things with big winter gloves on.
      I mean of course I wouldn't retouch a raster image in Ai. But Ai feels so much better to use.

    what is the advantage of releasing a compound path to edit an item versus just using the direct selection tool?

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  Год назад

      Both ways work similarly I guess, but I prefer releasing everything so that all objects are selectable in the same way.
      If the compound path had some logic behind its grouping system, then it would’ve been useful. But most often it has way too many compound path on top of itself. Especially when it comes to page boundaries and frames.

    Is there any way to allocate a drawn shape to a layer? I'm an architecture student and use illustrator with digimaps but when i export the file and open it in illustrator all the information is on one layer. How do i then, from there, split them up into categories and then layer them, so i can quickly select certain elements of the map?

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  4 года назад +1

      Hi Matthew! This is something I too struggled a lot. But here's how you can do it:
      You just use the select similar option to select objects with the same line weight, line color, fill color and so on. Then you just gotta reposition to a new layer.
      I use this technique in the video "Architecture Program Diagram in Adobe Illustrator". You should check it out:

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Tristan! The difference is that Photoshop works with pixels, so basically if you scale it too much it will get "pixelate" and will look with low quality. And Illustrator deals with Vector shapes. So no matter how big you scale it, it will never lose quality, you can print it to put on a billboard or something.
      There are many other differences, but that's a short brief.
