Richard Burns and Colin McCrae, the two guys who got their own video games. For a reason.
Not to sure. I would guess that Walter Röhl or Sébastian Loeb/Ogier would have deserved as well, as Tommy Mäkinen for example. Probably could find quite a lot more drivers. There is just so much talent in Rally.

The WRC from 1999 to 2005 is unmatched in my opinion. Absolute peak of the sport!
Peak of humanity as well
@Carmentalist and yet there's Group B, the whole nineties with Sainz/Kankkunen/Makinen rivary, WRX vs. EVO battle, RWD pre-Quattro era, Sebastians domination in this millennium...
It was awesome at all times, with scrapping the idiotic hybrid tech, it still is
Go watch group B. Different gravy
@davehunter3369 is not a different gravy at all. Yes, it was overpowered monsters, but spectators idiocy and lack of safety was genuine factors and that is why it lasted so briefly.
The drivers were the same superhumans with mongoose reaction back then, as there is now.
Changes everything around it, just not the concept of who has the bigger balls to balance on the limit the whole way without loosing control
@@siouexgroup B far surpassed the 99 to 05 period
Richard Burns is my fav wrc drivers all time, i meet Burns finland rally 2002-2003 😏 i have both Burns book with autograph, and huge Burns diecast rally car collection... and Burns rally game xbox... Rip Richard Burns 1971-2005 😔
I sadly missed the Burns/McRea era. I was away at sea and very rarely saw tv. My brother sent VHS videos at Christmas. It was getting more viewers than F1 at the time.
The peugeot 206 driven by richard burns is an unbelievable machine. As a peugeot 206 owner people these days look past older cars and heritige, i have a huge love for french cars especially from the 80s to the 2000s the best hot hatches ever made

You should watch Petter Solberg record stage Ouninpohja from rally Finland 2004. Subaru WRC. It's really exiting to watch. Legend.
That the one time he didn't crash?
@JoriDiculous 😂
@@lalogal i mean, his nickname was "velte petter" (overturn petter) He did Crash.. A lot lol

Co-driver's are amazing but 2 co-drivers are insane : Marc Marty (one of Carlos's Sainz co-driver) who gave the infos like a machine gun and Daniel Elena (ex Sebastien Loeb's co-driver) who nearly sang the indications
I've never heard anyone say of that Elena before and you're absolutely right. Great way of putting it.
i think you meant luis moya instead of marc marti, he's the one who spits out notes faster than eminem can rap
That second video was from Rally Finland, which usually has been the fastest rally of the year when one looks at the average speeds. As of 2023, out of the top 10 fastest rallies, 8 are Rally Finland and 2 are Rally Sweden. Imagine going 180-190 km/h on those gravel roads and jumping here and there, I would probably throw up after a few minutes.
I'm old enough to remember when Burnsie was being touted as the next big thing, competing in the British Rally Championship in a Subaru Legacy alongside Colin McRae's brother Alistair.
R.I.P. Richard, what a great video. You should check out the other big name, Colin Mcrae Wales 2001 GB video
from 5:40 look like Thousands Lake Rally from Finland, which was just featured in your today's qwiz game video :)
Back in the day, I was playing a lot of racing games, I was pretty good at it as well. Mostly "arcade" games, like Need for Speed series, Burnout and Flatout. The first rally-game for me was Colin McRae, which also was an "arcade" game (what I mean with arcade is that you could crash easily into the side of the track and without losing a lot of speed, you can continue) Then came the videogame by Richard Burns, which was a simulator game, not arcade, and boy did I have trouble keeping the car on the road, very difficult game, much more satisfying when finishing.
RBR-Richard Burns Rally is to this day the GOAT of Rally games, one of the greatest racing sims ever made & proof of that is that it's still going better than ever: ruclips.net/video/bghsRVGCNVc/видео.html
From RBR to RSRBR & now RSF, this masterpiece is evolving, getting better & better!
14:40 they just mean english. Colin McCrae was scottish, theres also welsh and northern irish drivers that would be british but not english oc.
Rally Drivers are truly the best in the world👍
He drove Peugeot after Subaru and that was most likely in Finland.
Ah the memories, my dad used to record wrc for me when i was a kid and we would watch it together. It was exactly in this era too, Richard was my favorite... RIP Richard
That`s pretty cool, my dad never watched motorsports, reminded him of his hotrod that his friend totalled and 💀 in, then he`d get pss`d because he spent years on that thing and said "if he didn`t 💀 I`d ☠ him myself" lol 😂
I mean it`s sad and all, but the way he spoke about that car, classic T Ford (34` I think) with huge rears, skinnies in the front (white walls front and back), chopped, dropped and a big@ss blown Hemi, sun yellow with black top, over 30 layers of paint and a lot of blood sweat and tears..
He only had a black and white picture of it though, but I still have that car, and the story fresh in my mind.
It`s still a good memory because that`s when I understood how much he loved that car 😁
Like I've said before these guys are on a different level......and with car control like you've never seen .....such commitment
When you think you're an ace behind the wheel, simply flying, you watch couple of these videos, and you're back on the ground humbled 😂
Off course McRae is more famous because of his go big or go home approach, but Burns was more calm, technical, consistent and because of it, highly underrated.
A. Formular 1 driver, was taken for a ride with a rally driver---and was surprised shitless! These drivers are the VERY BEST
Yeah, it was David Coulthard and he got out half way through and walked back.
He said they dont drive on the limit, theyre way past the limits and they are certified nuts..
That was David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen went out with Kalle Rovenpera. Both were truly shocked and a little scared
Not just the driving skill, it’s the ability to absorb the onslaught of navigation notes that are a bend, or 2, ahead of where they actually are!
My head would stop working 🤯🔥👏🏼
RIP RB
You are absolutely right. Having done some amateur rallying as a driver and co-driver. The information exchange is intense, as you are driving at the limit. But at the speed of the WRC, my brain would have a meltdown 😮
I've driven that stage a few years ago. Such an epic road. San Remo is legendary. I've done most of the greatest rally stage in europe and those of San Remo were the one that made the best impression. Still some vivid memories 10 years later.
My auntie has part of Richard Burns bumper in her garage still has the dirt on it from one of the Rally's in Wales.
I met Richard Burns in 2001 at the Punchestown Rallymasters. Came across as a very nice guy. His driving was so precise head and shoulders above anyone else I'd ever seen. In 2002 McRae burst into the place in his helicopter and was "balls to the wall" with his Ford Focus as well as taking a spin in a Rallycross Focus around the stage. Both gone way too early and too young.
Burns was an absolute beast just like McCrae , awesome drivers
You really should check out his onboard from rally gb in the fog where he took insane amounts of time from his rivals
The speed is actually crazy when you are in that shotgun seat. We had a chance to go with Marcus Grönholm in a 300hp Subaru when he was going about 80 percent power and it was just insane
Rally drivers the best drivers in motorsport🇸🇪
He is in my Top 5 of epic Rallye drivers. 1 Walter Röhrl, 2 Sebastien Loeb, 3 Colin McRae, 4 Richard Burns, 5 Michele Mouton.
I would put Kankkunen or atleast one Finn on that list.
@@salmonero6472 And take out who?
bro hate the finns
I would almost agree (cuz I deeply respected Walter Röhrl, but I didn't like him), though it would be hard for me to place drivers.... Definitely Kankkunen and Vatanen would or should be considered. I was a kid in late 70-ties and in times of group B and as a Citroën fan, Loeb is my favorite driver, but each era/decade had had its giants!
What about a Dakar highlights/crashes reaction in the near future?
Richard Burns was known for his precision as much as his speed. His ability to drive purely on Roberts notes in poor visibility conditions was unbelievable both to fans and to the other drivers. That he became champion during an era when the sport was so full of superstars tells you a lot. He would definitely have gone on to greater success had he not been sadly taken too soon. He was indeed (and still remains) the only ever English World Champion. He showed his talent from early on at local and national level and always worked hard to improve. Most of all, Richard was a genuinely nice guy, a gentleman and very popular throughout the sport. Thanks for showing this, always happy to see more similar material!
You have to make a video from you playing the Dirt Rally on your wheel!! It's one of the best experiences you get to feel "the zone" so easily the game and the amount of inputs drags you in so quick and you have to keep absolute focus. It's kinda funny how easy is to be sweaty and dryeyed just from sitting in front of a PC. Also start with the slow cars like the Lancia Fulvias it's the best for learning the calls and driving styles and still exiliriating enough
Sadly he left us to early 😥
Love these reactions ❤ Sebastian Loeb is a great rally driver you should check out
I always feel a little sad when I think of Richard Burns, he left us far far too early and not only did the WRC lose a great driver, the world lost a top bloke. I didn't know him personally but it was obvious he was a good egg.
Thats why i Love Walter röhrl and His s 1 Audi quattro ❤....legend😊
❤❤❤❤❤
There are many types of drivers. I would call Burns a conservative driver. No excess sideways.
Also, take note the slide is before the apex of the corner. Sliding is usually a braking maneuver. There are also different driving techniques for the type of drive system.
This is probably the British Forest Rally. It was a great event. It is the closest WRC event compared to our NW Rally events, at least back then. Twisty, fairly rough, cliffs, trees, not a lot of room for errors.
I've been in both the driver and navigator seat. Actually won the NW championship as Co-driver. It's an E-ticket ride. You have to believe that the driver is not trying to kill you or himself. Head down, take care of business, take a glance up to verify, head down. Coming off those jumps I have felt the rocks under my feet.
As a driver 60mph is pretty manageable on these roads. Make a mistake coming out of a corner you can almost stop in the width of the road. Speeds of 90 are serious business. I personally had stock engined cars and that was its limit. As Co-driver I was in a more powerful car. It was and old 510 and got kind of wicked handling at high speeds. Mike and I figured 85mph was the safe limit unless it was very smooth. But that is fast enough. We did very well one season. Started the second season and we took a mighty off one of those exposures. We would still be rolling if not for a couple of trees. It wakes you right up.
The racer mindset is different from others. I jumped right into another car with no hesitation. Mike started building a new car.
I have slow rolled several cars, gone airborne off the road a couple times, landed in a river once. It's just part of the game. Everyone makes mistakes, when you are really good it costs you time, not so good it costs you money, really bad you right the car off. And sometimes it just happens for no obvious reason. That was our big off. Something happened, the car just stepped out viciously. I jerked my head up and all I saw was green. We snagged the rocker panel and snap rolled into the woods. A giant centrifuge. Neither of us hurt but I couldn't even find the road when I crawled out of the car. When I heard a car it was up the hill but I couldn't see it or the road. About 3-4 cars went by before I made it the the road and signaled we were OK.
Orders of Precedence ... Oh God, save my life ... save the car ... don't get stuck.
This stuff always boggles my mind...it almost defies logic
I stopped regularly watching rally when both Richard & Colin passed away. Such talent & entertainment gone way too soon.
I remember when I was a teenager, I was using a Nokia N-Gage phone, and at that time my most loved game and play was Collin Mcrae Rally.
You should react to on board footage from the Manx Rally, there's great older videos with Collin McRae and Ari Vatanen but also lots of newer ones. The Isle of Man Rally stages are wild with lots of tight turns and elevation change.
The 2nd rally is definitely 1000 Lakes (jumps?!?!?) in Finland. The 1st one, maybe Corsica. Catalunya? San Remo. Not sure.
Crazy experience on my life. Middle 80s, to have an idea of what is going on in theses circumstances. A friend of mine bought a new car, and 4 guys went to Serra de Sintra in Portugal, to give it a go. The owner, at 4 a.m. crashes the car into a tree and broke the gearbox in the middle of nowhere (it was dark, dark night. 5/10 minutes later, appeared the Portuguese National Rallye Champion, on a Lancia Delta Integrale. He stopped. He was confirming the notes to a Rallye that would go on next weekend. He offered to one of us, a lift to Sintra to call a toe-car. But he was going to do it, as if nobody was there (it means almost full speed), since after they were going home.
The only person that knew where we crashed was me... So here we go. Driver and co-driver reading notes and maybe 90/95% on full speed. Sitting in in the back in a spare tire and grabbing, with all my forces, to the security bars. Not at this World Championship level (the level immediately below ), but pretty fast. 10,5 Kms of something i cant, even today, describe. In a road that i know by heart... Scary and at the same time a huge rush of blood and adrenaline.
For 4/5 day, i believe all my muscles hurt, like they never hurt before (or after) .
I consider my self a pretty good driver. And a motorhead. But Rallye is not for everybody. In a track, call me in. Rallye at the highest level, its only for a few ones.
Now imagine doing this on the old Lombard RAC Rally.
The co-driver received a "Tulip diagram" that described each bend on the course but the race lap was their first and only drive through the stage. Add in that the weather back then often included ice and snow, they had night stages and very little rest. Many drivers hated it!
I was so sad when Burns suffered medical issues! After Colin, he is my 2nd best WRC driver from the '90s!
P.S. You can see him braking from hundreds of yards away to take a turn, read out 5 seconds ago, while keeping the car off the grass or looser surface by inches....between crash and fast time!
In uk subaru released a limited edition road sti called RB 320 in honour of richard burns
Colin Mc Rae used to say "in the doubt flat out" only on the trust of his navigator and the car. When you don't know what to do just flat out cause your 4wd car will take you out of everything. It's just everything you need to understand about rally. Are they crazy ? Of course. Are they great ? Obviously. F1 drivers also think that rally drivers are completely crazy. Honestly nothing hit like rally especially back then.
Keep doing rally reactions Ian. Everyone will keep returning to watch them. These guys and gals are absolutely crazy. What an outrageous form of motorsport. More please.
i had a 2nd-hand (3rd, 5th?) road legal '87 peugeot 205 around the late 90s, an amped-up 741B. most fun car I've ever had. pininfarina piece of art, 2 liter turbo, ~100hp, 900kg body weight iirc, full remus exhaust system rework, broader wheels and subtle spoilers. oh, and: a convertible. the most stupid thing ever for a 20-year-old: it's a miracle I'm still alive 🤣 (and my passengers 😶)
The Richard Burns video game was amazing, I think people are still modding it today, it was so good.
Robert kubica next
Love all the scoobies. Still see a few early 2000's STi' cars on the road. 25 years old and been ragged to death but still going. Always make me smile. The 206 was also a classic so compact then replaced by the 307 which was dog ugly
His co-driver Robert Reid is now very high up in the WRC's management and doing very well for himself.
Richard and Colin were the two greats, didn't win more than one championship each, but well loved and legendary drivers. Colin was always flat out, Richard's style was more conservative but incredibly neat and fast.
I think the second part of the video is in rally Finland, there was a rally there one year where they were hitting the jumps at such a speed that the landings literally winded the co driver so much they couldn’t speak and give the driver the pace notes for several of the following turns. It was unbelievable
those rally cars really take a beating and just keep on going. its impressive
5:40 Welcome to Finnish dirt rollercoaster
And the navigator reading the pace notes very calm en the cool without vomit 🤢 all over his notes😂
Richard Burns was such a nice guy as well. It would be hard, not to like him.
The stage with the Impreza was in San Remo, Italy. Also take a look at this amazin onboard from Burns aswell but in HD, amazing!!!! ruclips.net/video/ZyYpF-YsLso/видео.html
Great stuff. Must be time to 'discover' the great rally legend called 'POSSUM BOURNE'. He's from New Zealand, so more than likely he'll be ignored!! Mr rally fan iWrocker seems to have a grudge against New Zealand, for some reason!!
See the old nokia brick in the phone holder of a world rally car lol.🤣👊🏼👍🏻
Rally is an amazing spectacle... A brilliant weekend usually. And it's 100% completely free to go and watch!
You are always first on the ball !! God show as always. 👍
One of my top 3 favorite rally drivers, the other 2 being Colin McRae and Tommi Makinen. (Edit): in the 2002 clip he's driving a Peugeot 206.

I just love how excited you get 😂
Im almost certain that second video was from Rally Finland, all the jumps, the high speed, the landscape... It had to be FInland!
What a great video to have the other camera inserts

Hope you do check out more of Burnsie was my favourite driver growing up
I also think you should look up and play Richard Burns Rally ... It certainly shows how difficult rally driving is!

This is how i feel driving through Wales while in desperate need of a wee.
What was that legendary rally clip "Sanji you need to listen to me you´re breaking the car" "Shut up, I´m driving"?
Samir you're breaking the car
Oohhh and it's the legendary Subaru Impreza 😍
He drove like he had a reset button ^^
Richard Burns should have been/could have been, a multiple world champion.
I remember how i played the Rally Game from Richard Burns. Bought a Set Up with Wheel, Paddels, and Gear Shift.
Just to find out that my Paddels don't work at the same time.
Seeing Dick Burns is often shocking and very hard to forget.
Ian, I always love to see you getting amazed 😅 You're almost right. I would rather say: NASCAR is nothing compared to Rally. It's boring! Here you can really test new parts on the car!
That Scooby back then was something else....
That and the Evo had unfathomable pace, grip and stability.
Yes go from Australia 🦘🌏🦘
When I watched rally on TV in the 80/90's they often had a speed display in the corner..
rally is so exciting! my favorite!

ALSO MADE ONE OF THE BEST RALLI GAME ASWELL, CONTROLLING THE CAR IN THAT GAME IS AMAZING.
Since you're looking at rally again, look into Possum Bourne. Legendary Kiwi rally driver who dominated the Aussie rally scene for years.
Awesome!!
Richard Burns, Colin McCrae certainly up there wth the very best along with Tommy Makinen although there are others i would class as masters at the sport, Sebastien Loeb, Wallter Rohl etc etc
And are still a fan of racing circles on a oval track?😉😅
Gr frank from the Netherlands
Ian, I think it's time for you to check Citroën's rally history (WRC and Rally-raid), Sebastian Loeb as one of the greatest drivers, as well as some of their epic rally cars like Xsara WRC or ZX Rallye Raid...😊
Some call him the GOAT... just remember there are a lot of other goats as well. All of them are crazy bad drivers.
For an average European growing up in hillie, mountainesk, alpine area, this looks like especially decent 4wd drifting, driving home from the pub with his homies ;D
Rly the only difference is like 10-20mph, or not even that if it's his hometrack and he drives a WRX STI 2003 :D
I drive like this when i'm alone and know the track, greetings from Austria :D
Yaaay more Rally! Always a win!
It's hard to think of a motorsport, which was so close to the fans.
They would drive, on normal roads between stages.
Which for a small kid, you could stand there and watch them pass you on the road or maybe going past your house.
The special stages and even arena type small stages too were great, too.
Thinking about it, the isle of man is maybe similar but ive never been
Big legend
5:50 I like seeing that old Nokia phone on that holder next to the co-driver! 😀
