I remember my first ever exposure to "(笑)" was a Gintama arc where they go into a MH esque game and just go about their shenanigans (as they do), and so whenever they would use that in someone's chat, they would actually read it out loud like "kakko warai", so i thought it was a normal thing to read it like that for quite some time after that, just like we would ironically read out "LOL" or something, but yeah i realized you don't actually read it out at some point don't worry xP

Saying that chuunibyou literally means "2nd grade illness" is...wrong? I was going to say misleading, but it's actually just wrong 😅
It's usually translated as 8th grade syndrome/sickness/illness/whatever. It's super literally "middle 2 sickness", but chuuni is a standard way to refer to the second year of middle school...which translated to the American school system is eighth grade (Japanese middle schools start in 7th grade). But nowhere in that is it "2nd grade". That's implying we call second year middle schoolers 2nd graders, but I've never in my life heard that usage.
Not to be rude, but that really threw me off.

You mention people using this phrase in a self-aware fashion. Would you say this is more often along the lines of ‘this is cringe but I like it anyways’ or of ‘I'm using this ironically, wouldn't it be funny if I used this sincerely’? (Or a mixture of both?)
