Broyi Broyi - Armenian Song

  • Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji, female vocals by Kelareh Kabiri. This is an Armenian song from the repertoire of Sayat Nova, perhaps the greatest Armenian musician of all time, who lived in the 18th century in the Caucasus, and is seen as a central figure of the culture. An ashough, he was a bard, poet, ministrel, talented kemenche player, and composer.
The arrangement here therefore refers to the kind of arrangement he would have been familiar with: where the instrumentation is more representative of East Armenian and Caucasian Armenian music rather than those of the highlands and the Middle-Eastern diaspora. Instead of ouds, qanuns, the duduk and other such instruments being principal, instead we have the tar and kemenche taking center-place, in part due to the massive Persian Classical influence active at the time in the Caucasus, namely Armenia and Georgia due to Qajar rule or simply Greater Iranian cultural influence.
    Armenian lyrics:
Concerning the translation, I was given the broad meaning of the song, but if any of our Armenian viewers could provide an actual translation, it would be appreciated as the lyrics are very archaic and hard to translate.

It’s so sad to see what they've been through this past century, whether that be the massive genocide they suffered against the Young Turks & Ottomans 100 years ago or their wars against the Azerbaijani government. Salute to the peoples of Armenia! 🇦🇲

Well Ottomans issued a exile on the Armenian population that is true though an extermination order doesn't exist. Also it should be noted during the exile not just the Armenians died but the troops that were transfering them was dead thanks to dehydration and starving. Also Armenians had their own genocide against the Turks that is recorded in the Ottoman archives. So yeah everybody suffers in WW1 Turk or Armenian that doesn't really matter in the end both groups met the same fate.

As Farya said, Armenians are neither persian nor iranian. However I guess it's fair to assume that they might share some similarities with iranians due to geographical proximity and centuries of cultural exchange.

    • @Γνώστηςτωνγατών
      @Γνώστηςτωνγατών Год назад +4

@@marcelogoncalvesdocouto7288 yes but Armenians were strongly related to Persians and widely Iranians, especially by the Armenian conversion into Christianity (the examples are some surnames ended as -ian, e.g. Armenian Nersesian and Iranian Akbarian, and similarities between pre-Christian Armenian and Zoroastrian deities, for example Armenian Anait and Zoroastrian Anahita)

@@Γνώστηςτωνγατών Yes, they had a lot of cultural links thank to their geographic closeness and both were related through being indo-european but I would like to add, in case, people might miss it, but armenian isn't part of the indo-iranic branch of the indo-european family (if that's what you meant by related) and they most likely came from the west, through the balkans, after branching out from the other branches and reaching Anatolia in the 12th century BC

The duduk has become almost a stereotype of Armenian music that some feel the need to push into every single Armenian song there is, but as we can see from historical reconstructions, Sayat Nova barely used the duduk, as the kemenche and tar were far more prevalent in his period and region.
