Narses the Armenian - Epic Byzantine Music

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- Music arranged by Farya Faraji, vocals by Farya Faraji. Please keep in mind that this isn't reconstructed Byzantine music, only modern music with a thematic idea of the Byzantine empire. Narses, along with Belisarius, was one of the great generals of Justinian and Theodora's era, fighting for the reconquest of the Italian peninsula along with many other battles. An Armenian, he was born in a region known as Persarmenia, then under the control of the Sasanian Empire, and he himself was from the Kamsarakan family, linked genealogically to the House of Karen, one of the seven great noble houses of the Parthians. Agathias Scholasticus says of him "He was a man of sound mind, and clever at adapting himself to the times. He was not versed in literature nor practiced in oratory, but made up for it by the fertility of his wits," and as "small and of a lean habit, but stronger and more high-spirited than would have been believed." Narses entered the court of Justinian and rose through the ranks. At one point, Justinian changed a law which barred eunuchs from accessing the high position of patrician, just so that Narses, himself a eunuch, could become a patrician. From there, Narses would serve Justinian as one of his greatest generals amassing many victories, the most important ones being in Italy. After the reconquest, he would oversee renovation projects in Italy as well as the city of Rome, and importantly, he was the last general of Roman history to ever receive an official triumph within the city of Rome itself. A strongly religious man, he held a specific devotion to the Virgin Mary, and supposedly never went into battle without her consent.
This is a composition I based around folk melodic motifs from the region of the Armenian highlands in eastern Anatolia played on the duduk, an Armenian instrument commonly found in Armenian, Kurdish and Turkish music of the region. I wanted to capture the essence of Armenian music from the Armenian highlands, and therefore used the duduk, an instrument that I generally can't stand in most soundtracks and "epic style music." The duduk represents for me the apex of the West's disinterest with understanding the music of the East: any time a film in the West is set in the Middle-East or in some ancient era like Rome or Greece, it'll automatically use the duduk, because after the film Gladiator, the duduk has cemented itself into Western minds as "that ancient/eastern" sounding instrument. There's loads of videos with millions of views on RUclips called "ancient Egyptian music," that use the duduk, an Armenian instrument from the Caucasus and Eastern Anatolia, because as far as pop-culture is concerned, it's such some vague Eastern sounding instrument and all Eastern music is the same anyway--it would be like having Italian mandolins in a song about Vikings because "whatever they're both in Europe it's all the same music anyway." Supposedly Arabic themed music set in Morocco will use the duduk if the music is written by Westerners.
Soundtracks about ancient Rome also have an automatic fixation on the duduk, and Rome 2 Total War's soundtrack for example utilises this Armenian instrument unrelated to Rome to represent the concept of the Roman Empire, because that strong association has cemented itself ever since Hans Zimmer's use of the instrument in his soundtrack (one of my favourite soundtracks by the way, I'm not criticising his use, only the secondary effect it generated in pop culture). I want to stress that my use of the instrument here is a calculated one, and though you've probably heard it in hundreds of other epic music pieces with a historical theme, those tend to randomly use it in inappropriate contexts such as Iranian, Arabic or Indian-themed pieces, or even Roman, based on that general lack of knowledge of Eastern and ancient music and this general attitude of "whatever it sounds vaguely Eastern and ancient, good enough for me." If you're reading this, please keep in mind that the duduk is more than some vague instrument that can be applied randomly in every ancient and eastern context: it's a specific instrument with Armenian roots, with a specific use geographically in Eastern Anatolia, the Southern Caucasus and parts of Northern Iran, deeply linked to Armenian music with presence in other neigbouring cultures of the area also. I added a saz, a Greek lauto, davul drums and an oud to the instrumentation, with all these instruments being found both in Greek and Armenian music except for the lauto, only found in Greece. The lyrics are a prayer to the Virgin Mary, since I wanted to reflect his strong devotion to her, with the form of Armenian found here being an archaic one. The pronunciation is the Iranian dialect.
English translation of the lyrics:
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
ERRATUM: For some reason I pronounced the “h” in “orhneal” as a voiceless velar fricative instead of a voiceless glottal fricative, my bad.
Music arranged by Farya Faraji, vocals by Farya Faraji. Please keep in mind that this isn't reconstructed Byzantine music, only modern music with a thematic idea of the Byzantine empire. Please note this isn't reconstructed historical music, it's modern folk music. The Epic Byzantine Music series is a musical project where I explore various sounds from the ethnomusicological ecosystem of modern traditional music, using sounds from modern folk traditions as they are today as a framing device for themes pertaining to the history of the Eastern Roman Empire. No matter bro, as a Turk I know that your songs aren’t reconstructed cultural music, they are thematic ideas how it would sound if you imagine the Byzantine period on an epic way. It’s another masterpiece I can hear the synthesis of Byzantine and Armenian culture.

I wonder if you could get a byzantine / berber music, which might help to picture the Exarchate of Carthage, as well as the Mauro-Byzantine wars of the sixth century, as depicted in Corripsu's Iohannis, singing the praises of John Troglita against Antalas, Hierbas of the Laguatan, and many others.

would love to listen to a song about me and Khosrow but of course I go first because I'm not one the reason why the Roman Empire and Sassanian Empire got defeated by the Arabs so Khosrow goes last
@@justinianthegreat1444 hmm yep but it also the fault of emperor Phocas who started this mess by killing emperor Maurice who was the childhood friend of Khosrow II Parvez.
@Shahin Vahmanzadegan
Well khosrow took yemen and southern saudiarabia from the axumites (after their empire was nearly lost to the justinian plague), if he didnt do that they would've recovered and took overthe rest of arabia before the arabs could come up with anything (the axumites almost destroyed mecca btw), they were the ones who came up with the idea of uniting the arabs (way before the prophet was born)and they almost succeeded , imagine how much history would've changed, so khosrow takes the full blame in my opinion, shouldve stuck to his own lane.
@@AMR_k400 Aksumite took over of whole of Arabia was highly unlikely they were not that big of a superpower and it was Khosrow Anushirwan who took over the Yemen not his grandson Khosrow Parvez.

"liberazione". per quanto io adori i romani, la riconquista romana dell'Italia è stato l'inizio della decadenza italiana. i goti erano dei grandi, sapevano governare e potevano rendere l'italia uno stato unito già 1300 anni prima dell'unificazione... poi sono arrivati i romani d'oriente e più tardi quei scrausi dei longobardi

Armenia has been without a state for a long time, many Armenians do not live in Armenia. Such losses happen when several countries help your enemy, especially those related by language family. Loved how you transitioned from Eastern to Western Armenia and back. Really thoughtful of you, so thank you! Nice style, nicely done overall. Very impressive! Let me ask you, Farya, how does an Iranian perceive Armenian language -- like you show here -- does it cause any problems phonetically? I'm just curious. Thanks!
late reply, but just an answer from an Iranian: the phonetics are quite simple for a Persian speaker

Modern day generals are so boring, they just do what the government tells them to, back in the good old days, a general could just ignore an order because Virgin Mary disagrees with it and noone would find it strange and just go along with it. It did actually happen a few times with Narses (well, that at least according to the Most Reliable Historian Ever(TM))
Anyway, it's a fine addition to the Byzantine music collection, among the best so far. Keep making bangers like this and the 100k sub mark will be passed in no time.

Man this rocks. Somehow manages to be both really meditative and really evocative of vast landscapes and cavalries. Thanks also for always putting so much detail into your pinned posts. I always come away from these vids feeling like I learned something new
Dear friend Farya, you never cease to amaze. One more gem. Definitely need a Belisarius now. Thank you.
Its very cool. Thank you and greetings from Armenians!

Gotta say, I`ve never been to Armenia, but I would love to. They where always in-between massive powers, and always had to play games to survive. What I appreciate the most, is that whenever you look at the map even from antiquity, Armenia was on the map under the same name. Most of the regions changed their name throughout history, Armenia was always there.
I`ve grown to have a lot of respect for that.

Hello Farya, it has nothing to do with this specific video but after watching your videos about musicology, I had a question : is there slavic music according to musical provinces theory? I think that Balkanic music is not that typically slavic right ? But what about Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, Bohemian or Slovakian folk musics? Moreover, what are local and external influences in Polish 17th century Baroque music ? As vestimentary culture, did the north of the Ottoman empire or Hungary have any influence on musical culture in Poland-Lithuania?
I wrote many comments on you videos but never introduced myself. I'm a french history student seeking to work on Polish-Lithuanian region. This region's sociocultural history really fascinates me since I gave a touch to the matter of Polish nobility this year in a small study.
So thank you very much if you have any clue to these questions !
Schmutz d'Alsace !
That’s actually a really well timed question because my very next musicology video is gonna be about this subject, be on the lookout for it when it comes out!
As for your question: there isn’t such a thing as Slavic music musicologically speaking, no more than there’s a Germanic musical province or a Romance musical province. The thing about musical provinces is that they’re their own category and they don’t match up or line up with other groupings such as ethnolinguistic ones. Slavic is a linguistic family, and it only works as that: a linguistic category (with some cultural traits shared beyond language in the case of Slavs).
There isn’t such a thing as typically Slavic music-because there’s no such thing as Slavic musical components like Slavic notes, modes, chords, techniques, etc, or for that matter Geemanic musical components, or Turkic, etc. Russians don’t have a more typically Slavic music than the Serbs-one just has European music with a strong Eastern European flavour, the other is Balkanic; both are completely defined by the location they’re in. The point is that when talking about musical provinces, ethnolinguistic categories are completely irrelevant-musical provinces don’t follow ethnolinguistic lines. You look at “oriental” music, and Arabs, Greeks and Turks have fundamentally the same music. The fact that one is Semitic, another Turkic, another Indo-European etc is completely irrelevant. All that matters is where a culture is placed geographically. So there’s no such thing as Slavic music *musicologically*; Russians have the same music as their non-Slav neighbours in the region, ans Serbs have more similar music to Albanians and Greeks than they do Russians, because all that matters with musical provinces is physical proximity.
As for Polish baroque, I know absolutely nothing about it so I’ll refrain from saying anything hahaha, my entire knowledge of Baroque is limited to French baroque, Lully is life :p
In the case of the Slavs I’d add that there’s this one thing that does coincide neatly with their family which is the white voice, it’s this kind of screechy and high pitched female vocal texture, but that’s really the only Slavic musical feature that can actually be called Slavic musicologically, there isn’t a Slavic music system or theory, and the same applies to all other ethnolinguistic families.
Those parts reminds me of instrumental parts of Vahagn's birth......
Great work Farya :)
