Song in Gothic: March of the Visigoths | The Skaldic Bard

- Here is another song I wrote, arranged and performed in the Gothic language. This time, it is about the Battle of Guadalete, fought by King Roderic of the Visigoths, who is considered to be their last king, against the Umayyad Caliphate who were beginning the Muslim Conquest of Spain in the year 711. It is thought that the defeat really spelled the end of the Gothic language in Spain, as Latin was rapidly becoming the language of government anyway and had already reduced the status of Gothic to a daily conversational tongue for many. Guadalete was the final nail in the coffin.
The generally accepted consensus is that Roderic was abandoned during the battle by other Visigoth nobles who had pledged their aid but sought the throne, so wished to see Roderic fall in battle. They were stationed on the flanks but withdrew as the enemy cavalry approached, leaving the Gothic army surrounded. It appears, however, as though the rivals of Roderic were slain in the battle anyway as they attempted to escape. This was the beginning of hundreds of years of Islamic dominion in Spain.
I hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment and like the video if you did!

As a Spanish speaker from Mexico I have always been fascinated by the history of Spain but above all the history of the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo and how in the face of all adversity they remained firm and successful..
Speaking of the Spanish tongue, I believe there are Spanish vocab and names of Gothic origin.
@@armandomolina4225Interesting. I believe there is also Spanish words that come from Gothic such as “reger”, “ropa” and “guerra/guerrera” etcetera etcetera.
@@lopakacooper1668"Guerra" comes from the neighbouring Franks. The original meaning of the word *werru was "confusion". This is still the case with its German and Dutch cognates / descendants (verwirren, war).
@@ansibarius4633 My bad lol. “guerrero/guerrera” is definitely from Gothic though, right?!
@@lopakacooper1668Their most notable influence on Spanish is the name giving as you can trace a bunch of Spanish onomastics to Germanic/gothic ones. This is explained as a way to connect to the lost visigothic monarchy to the Spanish one.
My name is Rodrigo and while searching the meaning of my name I found the exact same thing, Roderic is just the same name and means "famous for its glory".
Rodrigo is a chad name literally
And his means have more sense since. King rodrigo died in battle. Never tried to escape or surrender. And with his mens, died like a warrior and hero

Definitely liking the Gothic songs. Old English ones are still my favorite ones of yours, but these ones are starting to grow on me.
Norse / Icelandic / Gothic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Faroese / Danish / Welsh / Breton / Cornish are the prettiest languages ever created and they have the most epic songs, but all other Germanic and modern Celtic languages are also gorgeous, so the songs with such lyrics tend to be really good with pretty melodies, and I am learning them all - I highly recommend learning these languages 2gether, as they are way too pretty not to know, and any other Germanic languages!
Now we just need a song in Frankish celibrating Charles Martels victory against the Islamic hordes
YES
I second that! Or one about Clovis' battle against the Alemanni at Tolbiac, where he prayed for the Christian god to grant him victory.
3rd this 👍👍
Swell idea
OH YES!
Now we need a song about Pelagius starting the whole Reconquista as a sequel
Pelayo by Avalanch
Gracias Don Pelayo ¡por tu liderazgo y sacrificio!
Lo curioso es que Pelayo debía de ser un sobrenombre, Pelagius significa "el barbudo".
Pelayu si es un nombre propio en lengua asturiana, creo.
@@joaquimalvarez2253
Yeah! That was also Visigoth, so he also was able to speak Gothic. Even if his own name (or nickname) is in Latin. The names of all his family are in gothic: Gaudiosa, Favila and Ermesinda.
I played this to my son. Now he babbles in Gothic and thinks about Reconquista.
Not a joke, but a true story :)
And btw, absolutely great piece, so powerful, fatal and inescapable. The deep and hoarse voice in the prayer part gives it the special feel... As if the prayer was aimed at Old Testament God, the angry and vengeful one.
Made me chuckle! Thanks, my friend
The Lord’s Prayer made me cry😢
Too😢
When they say "we have faith that christ will renew spain" the images of the reconquista flushed through my head at once and i got goosebumps.
Only 700's kids will remember...
This is so metal bro. I can't stop coming back😂
And then a few goths and latins resisted on the Asturian mounts saving us from the islam. Long live to our fathers who fought againts the coward invader.
Así es
This also makes it clear that the German inhabitants of France and Germany were not civilized and remained in their barbarism, as was demonstrated by the so-called campaigns in the name of the Cross, where cowards killed debtors in the name of religion, and they also did not even know soap, which the Romans described as barbarians 😂😂😂😂😂
Also, the stupid Charlemagne destroyed the Caliph’s gift of water, thinking that there were devils, and even the Franks could not make a watch like it. Come on, retardation 😂😂😂😂😂
And for what? Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, etc. are full of them again.
@@al_x2099 thats true. But not everything is losted, i hope that one day we rise again and recover the power we had one time. But all the occidental culture is bleeding and almost dead bcse we becomed weak and "inclusive".

This post inspired me to research the Visigoths. I am a student of history but never express this time and place. Thank you so much for sharing.
Compliments, once more :)
I do suppose that by 711 the Visigothic kingdom and church were increasingly using Latin and the local Romance (post-Latin) dialects that would eventually become Castilian Spanish, Gallego, Catalan and Portuguese. Gothic language might have even been thought of as being related to the already eradicated Arianism and thus purposefully avoided.
Thank you, my friend - and yes, indeed, I think you may be right
@@armandomolina4225The Castilian dialect originated in Castile region with the first written records coming from 9th century visigothic documents: cartularies of valpuesta. Arabic didn’t really have an influence on Spanish in grammar or syntax, it only influenced vocabulary.
The visigothic language dissapeared but the language live in the names and family names of spanish people. They are the most common.

@@BETOETE It is true that when it comes to our lexicon, the Visigoths did not bequeath us much of their original language in the end, since they were quickly and thoroughly acculturated, christianized and latinized here. Beyond this, they are a fundamental part of the history of our country (partly included in this song), also of the founding and development of many of our cities, of our culture and abundant art, as witnessed by our historical heritage, documentary, archaeological and artistic. Greetings!
@@Vaelicocarvet For the Visigoths, the gothic language started to lose importance when they settled inside Iberia. Being surrounded by Latin speakers and a different and more dominant Christian sect ultimately made them speak Latin more fluently. They also never really bothered to impose gothic anyways as it was theorized that Iberian gothic had mostly Latin derivatives anyway. Only selectively brining just 30 or so words from gothic like tregua, tapa, and sacar to name a few.
@@CarvedStones Yes, I said that in the first part of my answer, the one that refers to the language and the latinization of the Visigoths in Iberia. Beyond that, the second thing I argue regarding the rest of the non-linguistic legacy is also evidence.
@@Vaelicocarvet Of course, but much of their art, records, and buildings were torn down by the Muslims as a way to mock and show triumph over the infidels. Still though, they played an important role in the reconquista with its subsequent kingdoms.
Now patiently waiting for a celebration of the Ostrogoths, either as a song to the Theodoric the Great, or to Totila...

King Roderic violated a generations old custom maintained by the line of Visigothic Kings. The custom was to place another lock upon the door of a room in a tower in the city of Toledo.Instead of following this custom, he instead broke the locks and found a chest in the room. There was written warning that indicated that, essentially, when this custom was broken, the Visigothic Kingdom would end. He violated the principle of the Runa, or Mystery and paid the price. This story can be found in The Mysteries of the Goths by Edred Thorsson.

Epic song once again Skald. I'm loving the Gothic songs even if it sounds like such an unfamiliar language. If you even think about doing a Latin-sung song, maybe you could do a song about the story of Constantine the Great. Maybe from when he was first proclaimed emperor by his troops in Britain, his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, the founding of Constantinople, and his ultimate decriminalization and eventual conversion to Christianity. Thank you so much!
Lol, imagine if a German time traveled to the era/period of the Goths and greeted said Goths with “Hallo! Sie! Was ist los/Wie läufts?” 😅
Nice idea, Constantine the Great is one of my favourite historical figures (and as a result, my confirmation Saint). I'll have a think!
@SkaldBard As I remember, we don't have Constantine among the saints in the Catholic Church. How did you manage to get him to be your confirmation patron??
It's a strange one - the Eastern Catholic Churches venerate him but it doesn't seem as though the West does. Given the fact his feast day is celebrated on 21st May by Eastern Catholic churches that are in full communion with Rome, my priest didn't have a problem with it
@@SkaldBardSounds legit. Tbh, tough I'm 18, I am yet to be Confirmed (because of several reasons which I don't want to elaborate on) and I wish St. Aurelius Augustine to be my confirmation Saint. The first reason I chose him is that his story which he tells in "Confessions" is somewhat similar to mine in terms of faith journey, and the second one is that He has just a cool,Latin name similar to that of Caesar Octavianus Augustus who is my fav. The Trastamara lineage hailed from Goths. That includes Isabel the Catholic. Her line was lost after her. The tragedy of Spain, which fell into foreign hands (Borbon and Habsburg).
Thats some hard material you have right there! 😳😳
How I didnt discover your channel, this is amazing, may I suggest something about Martel or Pelagius?, amazing stuff
Thanks a lot and welcome! I have plans for both of them at some point :-)
Love this dude, so sick!

Awesome stuff man, thanks for the comment
@@SkaldBard welcome bro I love history like this especially the Anglo Saxons and your Harold Godwinson song it’s my fav 👍🏻
Your Norse and Gothic songs are the best.
Muchas gracias por este pedazo de himno.
Que no caiga en el olvido el legado germano visigodo.
This was fun to sing
Will Scythian songs ever come? (reconstructed language) Banger as usual
Hmm I'll see what I can do! Cheers dude
@@SkaldBard We love the SkaldBard. You have enough of a following that you could lead a successful migration war
Saxons were germanic-iranian tribe.

Oh My man! You achieved my wish, thank you✨
Visigtoths: You can't defeat us.
Latins:We know but they can!!
Arabs apearing
Really love the old English and gothic songs.
This is incredible!!
Keep up your great work
This one is a banger!
man, I was just wondering when you would drop another goodie!
and it seems today was a good day!
I appreciate the fact that a man that has no experience with the gothic alphabet could probably accurately guess most of the letters
Most letters are based on Greek and Latin.
I really love this song. I almost wish there was an instrumental version because the beat hits hard.
Might upload one at some point! Thanks buddy
As an Eastern Roman, I can only stand alongside our Gothic "friends" against the Arab invaders.
Gothics and vandals were about to wipe you out like the native Americans
more like the Muslim Invaders considering that the Muslim army that invaded Iberia were not Arabs at all just under Arab leadership lmao.
@@Sina.575 they were Berbers who saved the Iberians from being wiped out by the German gothics
The most dumb thing i ever see today @@mrjugurtha4077
@@mrjugurtha4077Celtiberians were under rule, i'm afraid. Roderic had some hard time with Basque people tho
❤❤❤ Terrific . Beautiful . Powerful . I will play it always. Great warriors are those who fight when all the chips are down. It really sounds like the Sanskrit chants .
Not the happiest of the subjects, actually quite a sad one, showing some cowardice from the part of the other "noble" visigoths, but in my opinion this is one of the versions that your essence is most present on, that warlike-battle field style. As I closed my eyes I could see a glimpse of the visigoths marching into battle and suffering from the missiles of the muslims, and at the end King Roderic falling from his horse and being stabbed. I guess no one is able to do a better song about Guadalete 711.
Thanks a lot for the high praise, my friend - and indeed, honour to the fallen!
Impresionante, adoro su trabajo
Love your music!
It's great to have songs in OE & Gothic, etc.
I came to know God in June of '17, & He is everything to me; a lot of your songs are great anthems for the spiritual war we're in, & they sound great, regardless of one's path.
Oh my! So amazing 😊❤ you are so awesome! Hail!
AS A GERMAN I UNDERTSAND VERY MUCH
Man I was JUST thinking "Damn when's Skaldic gonna upload again?" Perfect timing!
Btw, I have a question, do you write these in English first? And how exactly do you learn all these dead languages? I can barely learn German
God bless!
Hey man, thank you! It's usually a mix. I often draft a few English ideas but these normally get changed to be more fitting for the language I'm writing the song in, as I try to ensure they're as idiomatic as possible with attested fixed expressions from the corpora and so on. So I guess you could say the skeleton is often drafted in English, but it's not a "translation" of the English per se, more of a guide
When you make a song in a language like this, How do you study? Like sources, what correct endings to use on each word, etc
Spanish medieval history is inique. Very rich
Pleasant, appealing and soothing to the ears. 😁🎧🎶🎵
Magnum opus, vates! Tu peritus es!
Spain will rule the globe again.
