Here is another song, this time in Old Norse (and a bit of Old English) about the famed Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. The story is based on the Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and the Saga of Ragnar’s Sons. Naturally I couldn’t include everything (the song is already 10 minutes(!)), but I’ve included what I consider the main elements of the story. It’s quite an incredible story which speaks to the desire in mediaeval Scandinavian society to avenge a loved one. Nobody typifies that desire quite like Ragnar’s sons. It’s quite interesting, though, how they go about avenging Ragnar. I won’t spoil it here, you’ll just have to make it through the song. ;-) This was, frankly, absolutely exhausting to make, but I hope someone gets a bit of enjoyment out of the tale of one of Viking Scandinavia’s most famous figures. Funnily enough someone did a little experiment to see if someone speaking Old English could understand someone speaking Old Norse, and surprisingly enough they picked up a lot of what the other was saying. The only things that were really different was a few key words that could be understood by context
I am literally on the verge of tears. Literally. This song will be mastered while I sing in the shower. If you had sung this song at a table with Ragnarr Lothbrok and King Ælle, they would have become best friends. I will go play this song blasting from my car radio in the hood, I will go make friends.
On of the best feelings while listening to Bard's masterpieces is that I just want instantly increase volume to get filled with all these might, grateness and beauty. Good job as always👍
After having listened to this many a time, I return to the comments to add to my initial statement that I am mighty impressed by the sheer impact the single, simple word 'England' has as you let your stanzas end with it. There is an air of such dread, an air of War in this single word that stirs me deeply whenever I hear you sing it. God bless you and your family
marvelous work you've done. your time and effort you put into it is truly appreciated. i'm on my 2nd playthrough (NG+) of God of War Ragnarok and your video helps me understand the game's narrative better as it helps me get a better understanding of the game's lore even if the game doesnt delve as deep into the story as your videro does its codexes show a glimpse of it.
I finally have time to listen to this and I'm hyped beyond measure. The first words already blew me away - I sincerely hope this gets the attention it deserves!
If I may combine my love of the sagas of my people and my love of WH40K this must be the songs the Custodes, Vulcan, the Raven Lord and the Wolf King would chill to while quaffing Fenrisian Ale and Mjad!
I have no words to describe the intense ferocity felt throughout the song, especially *3:31* or *8:50* Also, at around *3:51* I like that you can hear your voice for what I believe is supposed to be King Ælle which sounds like a desperate plea for peace. (Which adds more to the atmosphere for the audience imo)
The first few seconds made me think of the OST of Daggerfall :) Joke aside, I love the long narrative. Maybe the instrumental part could be slightly better but it's great that we have a brand new song and in a slightly different style this time. As others said, the shift between Old Norse and Old English is perfect.
This is just shy of being my favorite "norse" inspired. Hard to beat the Hadrada one imo. I seen you did Brian Boru for the Irish? Any chance of a Black Douglas or similar Scottish inspired? (Unless I missed it)
Was already hoping you'd make a song about Ragnar and his sons 🤩 Love the heavier instrumentals, they go well with the story. Where do you find these Viking artworks, though?
Also, a few things to remember: The definitive case for nouns wasn't used until very late in the language's lifespan. The weak declension (such is found in the word "beinlausi") functions in Germanic languages as a definitive case for adjectives, thus "inn" (also a latecomer) isn't necessary. The form of patronymics in your video were also latecomers, before (during Ragnar's time) it was just Sigurðs sonr/sunr. Also, for ert and er, it would've been est and es during Ragnar's time (iirc). Great work so far, hope you see my tips though. Wes þu hal!
All of the grammatical functions I'm using are extant in the saga, which is what I'm basing the song on - I'm using a later form of Old Norse on purpose as there is far more material available
"Hell hath no fury like the p!ssed-off sons of an executed Viking!" Thorvald Edvardsson. Okay, I just made all that up, but I challenge anybody to prove me wrong!⚔️

Sometimes i can't even tell when it switches to the Old English because you can switch between it and Old Norse so well it's immaculate

I ran into this on accident while searching for Old Norse music. I'm glad I did because this is amazing and I can't stop listening to it.
