I do not know if he "capures the spirit" of this piece, but he definitely gives one hell of a performance and made me discover melodies in this walz that in all the other renditions I heard so far, were completely drowned...Wonderful!
Oh-h-h, EVGENI - you are GENIUS!!!! Ever since Chopin Competition where you was the BEST OF ALL, we are big fans of your ART!!! Dreaming for the opportunity to hear you in Toronto....
"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"!!! Marviously "gorgeous"! First time seeing him! This is what I mean when I say one plays with "reckless abandon"!!! Only being thoroughly "ingested" into this fabulous piece of music can one play like this! Wish the video & audio were better though. "Gesundheit"!
I can't say it's the best La Valse I've ever heard, but it's in the running. He has the "specialized" inflections this music needs; I would like a bit more subtlety in some places (and he HAS this ability!)..
I guess you simply have to be born Russian to play so stylishly. A purist will complain that he's taking liberties here and there, but it's in the service of the music. Exquisite!
Riveting, strong, and uncompromisingly masculine in approach. Highly compelling and convincing - but such a world away from Yuja Wang’s persuasive and seductive interpretation! This is what I love about fabulous pianists - stamping their personalities on masterpieces, leaving no-one in no doubt of their greatness or of the greatness of the composer.
He played beautifully but left out so many notes that I would like to see him play with such clarity and confidence and speed with all of the notes. Yuja plays almost all of the notes which is one of the reasons it sounds more seductive and more Ravel-like. Even though this was artistically a great performance which sometimes reflected Ravel’s intentions it is a simplified arrangement of the original which I play. It is 24 pages and at times there are over 280 notes played within 3 seconds. The “extra notes” on different staves are not “extra” and are not ossias. They must be included or just learn a more simple piece. If you like Strauss style Waltzes then try Arrangements of his music such as the Du und Du by Dohnanyi but changing a piece so much to fit a different style seems unnecessary. If you don’t want to learn La Valse by Ravel then learn a different piece. I really enjoyed many things that this pianist did but only out of the context of the Viennese style imitated by a French composer. I am half Viennese myself and I felt like it was more of an attempt to play Viennese music and to try and cut out as much of the French flavour of the music as possible. Anyone who has studied this piece and made the effort to be as loyal to the composer as possible would agree. The effort required to play this piece is halved by this simplification. I think he could play the original properly if he tried. If someone changed more well known music as much as he changed this piece they wouldn’t be taken seriously. Imagine if he changed 50% of the notes in Chopin’s music at the Chopin competition. Would he even get through the first round?
Mm.. I was taken in at first... all that eccentric and musical abandon..... very compelling indeed! But the more I see and hear of him, the more I have come to believe that he has the sensitivity of a con artist. Suave, practised, and brilliant.... but the poetry is snuffed.
2010 in Warsaw Chopin competition judges was correct. The fourth place is also too good for him. After competition winners can usually play Prokofiev 2nd. Concerto or Rachmaninov 3rd concerto. Unfortunately evgeni can't play them. Any youtuber have watched it that evgeni played them? Judges were so clever. They could see in the future.
@@pianoplayer9466 really? Mayby his concert plan was changed after my comment. Or? I hope, evgeni Bozhanov won't change or cancel the piece for this concert day. this is the most romantic and achingly beautiful La Valse interpretation I ever heard.

Ma è stupendooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dal suo meraviglioso modo di suonare emerge al 100% il genio di Ravel!
He's capturing the real spirit of this piece as no other pianist ever did before...
