If there will be a new Daytona, will Rolex change the case of the stainless steel version so the lugs on the right are even in size compared with the lugs on the left, as is already the case with the Daytona's in precious metal? It's something I find incredibly interesting why the stainless steel Daytona has uneven lugs. Ohh and edit: I love the ceramic bezel because I really enjoy the black on black combo of the dial and the bezel. Makes the face of the watch esthetically a bit bigger in my eyes.
Personally I like the ceramic in white and the steel in black as I feel it contrasts better in these combinations. The black on ceramic feels a bit too dark and hard to read for me. I think it'll be a few more years before they discontinue and update the Daytona as it has only been in production since 2016. Have any other models had such a short run before being updated?

Great perspective, David. I have both 116520 and 116500 in black and white dials. I prefer the 116520, they were my original "grail" watch. White dial. To me, the ceramics look smaller, especially in black dial. I think the dial closes it in optically somehow. Now I have to buy white gold ones before they go over $40k! Now, I do prefer the ceramic as kind of a "daily" wearer and I usually take them when I travel since the bezel won't scratch as easily. I Hate scratches on my bezels. Who doesn't? I don't think there really is a "bubble." Watches, especially Rolex are actually pretty inexpensive. In the 1st World countries, there are so many million-dollar earners now it's ridiculous. Let alone over 2500 Billionaires in the World. A $25K thing is like chump change to them. Rolex has of course, always had that "caché" of having "made" it. Even a financial downturn similar to the 2007-2010 meltdown would make a few more available to people that weren't 6 figure income earners or more that would dump $10k+ on a watch will be selling them, but they would quickly be absorbed in the market. The only thing that would undermine prices and "pop" the bubble is if Rolex started making more watches. If they do that, prices will stabilize. Let's hope they don't. Then the exclusivity will disappear. It would really hurt Omega then too-LOL Thanks for the vid.
Hi David Great video I acquired from my AD both black and ceramic white dial Daytona steel Love them both Today picked up 116519 LN Daytona oysterflex white gold Love it !! It’s going up in price too
Hi David, can you help confirm if the LEC on the ceramic Daytona is slightly different from the other Rolex watch model in that the Daytona's LEC coronet bottom oval circle has double line as oppose to the single line oval circle. Your black dial Daytona will be much easier to spot the LEC then the panda dial.
How long were you on the list and what other purchases ? I’ve made a few and I’m on list 3 years now, was originally told 9, but being told only a couple years now
David, nice video but let's be real, you massively benefit from the bubble. You are doing ten times the number of deals than you would in a non-bubble market.
I think secondary dealers only gripe is that they too have to pay a premium now to make their own margin which is a percentage drop in return on investment. So they have to essentially take a bigger risk in getting their cut. The watches still sell but they have to have more cash tied up in stock.
Id just pay little extra to get full gold oysterflex daytona It wont shoot up in price from here btw. When new model has better small refinement, old model tend to stay where they are. Take a look at older subc vs 41mm subc. Older subc went up in price for short burst, but quickly came back down
The previous Daytonas looks smaller with the steel bezels compared to the 116500LN and are of course easier to beat up (scratch), so my money is on the latter with the white dial (Panda).
The rolex bubble isn't bursting anytime soon, I thought it would but with clever sales tactics, limited supplies, price increases, discontinued models. And with the social media exposure - it looks to continue .
I don't reckon anyone who buys Rolex _at retail price_ will ever lose his shirt. But some of the _aftermarket prices_ are starting to reach over-boiling point, IMO. There could be some kind of correction...
@@j.burgess4459 never lost a penny on a Rolex. The stainless steel scenario is ridiculous and I have to agree I think that might take a hit. I've just bought an 116518ln at list. Got offered 25k straight away from a grey dealer. I've kept the watch but I can see the appeal... Crazy times
Any advice for someone like me. I want to purchase my first Swiss watch and want it to be the new Rolex submariner date. However,it seems impossible to get it anywhere if it’s not aftermarket and I’m not willing to pay 18k for it. Thanks
The fact there's never been a dip in Rolex prices previously doesn't mean much as the current situation is unprecedented. Rolexes were once seen as a solid investment as they'd always increase in value when compared to the future MSRP, but that was assuming they were bought at MSRP or below in the first place. When the value they are expected to maintain or even build on is over 2x MSRP, that is a dangerous situation in my opinion. There is also the Bubbleback craze of the 80's to draw a parallel with, though I believe that was largely in Japan. Also Milgauss GV sold for 2x retail back in 2008. That didn't last.
Thanks for the video David, I always enjoy your content. I personally like the stainless version better than ceramic, but to each their own. I do think that the 116508 with the green dial will be one of the most sought after modern era Daytonas once its discontinued, despite the fact that its all gold. Keep up the qood work and God bless...
There is a reason why Rolex came up with Ceramic bezel. It has years of research behind it. A stainless steel bezel is vulnerable to scratches and with the ceramic bezel they overcame that problem but at the same time gave a huge boost to the aesthetics of the watch. I like the metal bezel in precious metal Daytona's and from my experience those bezels you have to take care of them like a baby since they can easily scratch. I would prefer ceramic on SS models and full on full metal on precious metal daytona. These watches and the contributions for these videos would never ever bore me. Cheers David Khalil. Keep up the good work! Also please make a video on the Yellow Gold Green Dial Daytona. There is a huge upside in this watch as this may potentially get discontinued in 2023. Please share your views and that video will be really helpful.
116520 black 116500 white. If we get a crisis like 2008 the prices will drop. If you want to invest, buy Apple/Amazon or more recently Pfizer/AstraZeneca. Good topic, thanks for sharing.
@@cheapandevilgirl that was artificially inflated by unscrupulous lenders with negative am loans and unscrupulous and greedy lenders. Houses nor Tulips are a good analogy to the Rolex situation.
@@cheapandevilgirl why unscrupulous? If you had the money you would be buying and wouldn't complain. What's a hoarder to you? 2 Rolex, 10? I'm a collector. I wear a watch to match my mood and my outfit and or activity. I have more than 1 yet can only wear 1. Does that make me greedy? If I were to sell, due to market conditions I would make a profit. Does that make me unscrupulous? Rolex aren't houses. Watches aren't necessary for most people. Watches and the like should be paid for in cash. Again, most of us get frustrated because these items are moving out of "our" value system and price range. There are people out there that these purchases are chump change. As well as people that pay for what they want, that's their value system.
I do have the money. I could buy any Rolex I want. Today. In cash. But I will not. It is a substitution game. There is something missing in people's lives and it is up this dealer to convince us that his product is the only thing that will fill that void. You may buy that next watch and enrich this dealer but soon that empty feeling will return. But don't worry, by then he will have something new for you to focus on and buy. Rather than dealing with your real problems. Also, I consider this a case study in late capitalism. Late capitalism is a pyramid racket on a global scale. Getting the suckers to believe it's all gonna go on forever.
I have to respectfully disagree, the ceramic bezel with the white dial is an absolutely stunning and gorgeous timepiece. The contrast with the black bezel and white dial is just ridiculously attractive and eye-catching. I really hope next year for the 50 year anniversary of the explorer II it will receive the same black ceramic bezel. Fingers crossed. And I will 100% trade in my current model explorer II. I completely understand about tradition and heritage, but Rolex will always be looking for new and innovative ideas. As we all should!
This is a great video and all the Rolex did not discontinue the specific Daytona, prices have continued to rise and are now triple retail. Everyone who thought double retail was too much and that the price will dip has been disappointed so far and likely will continue to be. Rolex has changed their perception from a solid to a watch to perhaps the most exclusive brand for any massmarketed watch ever. I think Rolex money is safe and will continue to be for a very long time. Critically, as you said, the collectibility of watches is only increasing with new generations now.
I owned mine for 2 years and sold it for £17250. Nice watch but not worth that money in my opinion. I purchased a 126660 Deep Sea with the money and have over 6k change and in my opinion a superior watch ⌚
I still have mine and would never sell it. It’s versatile and it fits my 7 inch wrist like a charm. I don’t like the Deep Sea ‘cos it’s way too big and thick for me. That’s the Beauty of this hobby though, we all like different watches so there’s plenty of variety. 👍🏾
surely hope it will be updated though.. with movement refinements, and most of all a bigger case. It is currently at 38.5 mm (not 40 as Rolex says in their marketing material). I would like a full brushed case too like the Zenith. The ceramic bezel instead is sooo perfect, would never change it
I’ve got the daytona panda & other watches. Let me just say it’s a whole other level compared to the rest. Looks even better against nautilus / royal oak.
@@Mr.Khalil08 my ad has told me i have a chance in getting this daytona and the jc deepsea sea dweller..Is it worth purchasing both or just getting the one i love the most..
Daytona is a lovely showpiece watch, really nice, but it's most useless at what it is, being a chrono. Hard to read hands, not ready to use pushers, unless you keep them at ready state, where the watch looks plain stupid.
The two tone version is gorgeous and your getting gold and steel for less then the steel version on the after market! It's inherently more valuable and it's underrated for sure! I'd go for the gold and steel!
David another great video. I like the Stainless Steel Bezel, white face. The problem with the previous model was not being able to read anything on the dial, which was done in grey. If I was going to choose between the last version of the Stainless Steels, it would be the White Face Ceramic Bezel. It is a beautiful watch and you can read everything without straining your eyes.
I saw your explanation on Tim Wright in the stainless steel and ceramic Daytona. I understand what you are saying. But there is also the fact that the ceramic bezel looks nicer than a an all steel bezel. Also with vintage watches unless it’s big dealer you can’t be sure of of not only the condition on the outside but the inside. I bought a zenith Daytona from Watchmaster two tone. It was in atrocious condition I sent it back.
It was my first Rolex so have fond memories even though I'm not the biggest fan of the Daytona although I've had two, one Zenith and one Rolex movement with steel bezel. I personally wish it had a date feature.I would never refuse to buy one from an AD ever! If I was ever lucky enough which I doubt. It still remains amongst the most sought after Rolex watch.
I personally never liked the stainless steel bezel Daytona , not until it went ceramic i thought wow...thats more like it and wanted one, its streets ahead nicer looking and more classy, not toy like at all.. sounds like your mate you mention was wrong as he said theres never been a dip in prices...well we are in it now right now as i post this, picked up my Mint Boxed black ceramic 2020 daytona for 19,000 pounds last week. 2 years ago it was around 28,000+ Finally good to see prices drop as i buy to wear not flip. So if you brought one of these around time of your video..then OWWCHHHH you have taken a massive hit. So never always take watch guys social media advice. Paul Thorpe is good though as he predicted a massive dip.
I saw on chrono 24 that this is going down the 2019 version is now with a dealer at 24k either this because it’s a slow month or the watch has reached it’s peak. The 6 on there in 2019 haven’t sold for ages.
I think we have to distinguish between retail price and aftermarket price. If somebody can buy a Daytona (for example) at retail price, and then there is some kind of crash in aftermarket prices, he still wouldn’t lose the money he spent - or would only lose a little bit in the absolute worst case. But if guys are paying _double retail_ (for watches which are not numerically rare and which are still in production) _they_ are the ones who could get quite badly burned if the aftermarket prices dropped.
@@j.burgess4459 then again if you can comfortably afford to drop double retail on a commodity in the marketplace I don’t think a financial hit on a watch would be too disastrous on your finances. But if you’ve put all your eggs into one basket that’s another kettle of eels... as always the buyer needs to be aware, but if they get burned such is life.
@@bobbydazzler1780 You make a fair point: no doubt there are some dudes (footballers, etc) who will buy a whole crate of Daytonas for double retail - and they wouldn't even notice the fact if a couple of them went missing down the back of the couch, so to speak. But it bothers me there may also be some dudes out there who can't by any means afford to be jaunty about losing 5 or 10K but who have been persuaded to treat watches like a kind of alternative stock-market? (I remember when I was in a pre-owned dealers some time ago, there was an old-ish dude looking at some steel Rolex models, and anxiously asking the dealer: "these always go up in value, don't they?" I can remember wondering to myself whether he was wise buying a Rolex watch at all, if he needed to be so concerned about residual value...
@@j.burgess4459 thus far I’ve always considered any money I’ve spent on anything as gone forever. That way should I ever decide to sell, anything that comes back is a bonus. But to buy purely as an investment vehicle that you won’t dare wear and just lives in a box is a game I’ll never get into. As for others that’s their own choice.
@@bobbydazzler1780 You've got it exactly right buddy: regard the money as spent (...and occasionally there may be a pleasant surprise in 10 or 15 years time.)
For the black, 1000% i prefer SS bezel. For the white, I prefer the Ceramic. And you make an interesting point about peaking of the watch sector and I really agree with you that there is still a LOOOONG way to go with prices before any sort of crash/correction will happen.
The oysterflex Daytona would be better with a glidelock clasp. They put a glidelock on the yacht master and the sky dweller oysterflex. An AD sales person told me Rolex had already done this for the Daytona (Rolex web site doesn’t say this so I don’t believe them). Oysterflex makes a gold Rolex much more wearable, and so does a ceramic bezel. Gold (even steel) bezels are major scratch magnets.
Why would they discontinue it soon, the "2" series watches are upgrading to slimmer case lugs and 70 hour power reserves, both of which the 116500 already has, so... The rest of the upgrades in the new watches are minor
Another tangential thought about price hyperinflation with Daytonas - these watches are very identifiable when you see them out in the wild. They don’t exactly fly under the radar. And that’s their main problem. Wear one of these openly in public and you’re advertising the fact that you’ve got a suitcase with 20K hard cash in it on your person. Basically you are putting yourself in a defensive position where you may get admiring looks, but bad things could equally happen. No wonder watch crime has spiralled along with the online prices. High asset value items that can be stored in a pocket will always attract the criminal fraternity.
Great vid D. Interesting prediction. I would think they would upgrade it to 41mm (or 40.5) and probably change out the bezel like you predicted and adjust the clasp and bracelet taper. That would be wild though. It hasn’t been out that long. What can they do with the movement they haven’t already done it was well ahead of its time. I own a 116520 but I do like this one too for different reasons.
Black daytona is not really black on black; in the metal the bezel has a sheen that looks like black chrome. Easy pick for me vs the white dial when I got mine
Interesting point that every Rolex is being upgraded to a 12xxxx so surely the Daytona will receive the same treatment. I think they will adjust the pushers too as no one needs screw down to maintain water resistance any more. Bold to call it for the next year though as I can never predict what Rolex will do. Ceramic bezel for me wins over the steel. There's something about how beautifully it catches the light.
Yeah, I'm with you David - I prefer the steel bezel. As for Daytona aftermarket prices...yeah well...we live in realms of insanity, IMO. I do think there has to be some kind of correction somewhen or other, and I'm absolutely determined only to buy Rolex at retail in future. (Apropos, I got a funky-phonecall from my AD this very morning. A BLNR is joining the contents of my deposit box. I told the guy I would have preferred a 124060 which nonplused him a little!)
That DateJust with the Roman numerals, that you were wearing, is a great looking watch. I feel that watch in white with the Jubilee bracelet is the best looking Rolex. I really doubt you could affect the price of Rolex watches. People are being silly thinking that.
Yep our money looses value! Absolutely on the same page with you👍🏽 That's why we should invest in assets ASAP. What happens when money ain't worth squat? Exactly...1920 crisis saying hi...

I agree that there’ll be no bubble and that things will only get more expensive. I don’t agree that this Daytona will be replaced after only 5 years. Finally I predict the discontinued hulk will fetch as much as a Daytona ceramic by next year.
I sure hope not. Anyone who would even consider paying that for a Submariner is absolutely nuts and obviously only Want it for all the hype. But to each their own. There are so many much much better options at that price point that the submariner can’t even be considered in the same category as. Just my humble opinion.
@@secretsanta9046 i agree, it’s what the market is prepared to pay is how the prices are positioned in this market. However, u talk about the sub and it’s price point, what makes the Daytona , a non date chrono which is still in production btw better than a discontinued submariner ( the backbone and the staple of the Rolex brand )???
I see no reason for the price to sky-rocket when it is discontinued. Such an obvious thing to say. If it is not replaced then of course it will, but if it is replaced by a newer better version, everyone will first want that one, and those who cant get it will fall back to the previous. It surely wont be worth more than the new version on the secondary market.
I love the look of that particular watch and the ceramic bezel. Rolex used to be a brand that was luxury but affordable but they are no longer this. I would be uneasy about wearing a watch like that in public for fear of it being damaged or stolen and therein lies the seeds of the bubble that will eventually burst. Most people who buy a good watch are not collectors, they just want to wear it and use it and if they can't do that with a Rolex they will look for other brands like Omega or Tudor who do produce that kind of watch. When that happens the sales of Rolex will fall and the market will rebalance itself and of course whoever is left holding the stock will face losses.
David, keep up the great work. love your informative video's. The Rolex situation is frustrating, but we all know how the game is played. Last week I went to an AD and put in an expression of interest on a new Sea Dweller and three days later they said we have it for you. Very surprising to say the least. Bubbles, watches, etc - Watches will most likely go up and down in value, but long term they will be fine. I look at some very highly valued comp's on the stock market that are worth billions and not making any profit - that's a bubble.

Really great video. I prefer the ceramic but I’d kill for either. Lol. I can’t see Rolex dipping. My friend said it about real estate 30 years ago. That it would implode. Lol ya right. Never. I feel the same about Rolex. I think they are keeping it right on that fine line. They are geniuses. Edit: marketing geniuses
I can’t really see where they can go with the steel Daytona. It’s more or less evolved to perfection and the ceramic bezels are going nowhere. Personally I prefer the panda dial as the black is just a little too much black going on. Never been sold on the steel bezel version somehow. No chance I’d ever buy something like that as I’d be very wary of wearing it and picking up dings and scratches. I bet the vast majority of these super prime investment vehicles are just stashed away in their boxes in pristine condition waiting to be sold one day. I think the new generation subs are going to suffer the same fate given their mark up. Just happy to have a ceramic Sub that I actually wear regularly and have done so for years. The investment game is just rich guys sat on a heap of money who get no return from the bank buying flashy toys to amuse themselves. I don’t even bother looking in Rolex AD windows anymore as it’s just two tone Datejusts galore and the cynical flipping game just bores the pants off me. Rolex ADs may as well just shut shop and supply the armies of greedy flippers full time.
but back in the days you dont had flippers, watch investors, fake market situations , pushed prices from dealers, if the situation changes, next financial crises comes. at the moment watches like the nautilus dont realy sell , in germany. and if prices drop, the flippers dont buy watches, you can buy normal steel djs again, not wimbledon for 11k. i dont say rolex will worth 0, but maybe less, at the moment the stockmarket is very high, if it crashes more people that bought watches for investing sell to buy cheap crashed stocks, you can see changes like this on gold to
Logically, if the new watch has a better movement, better strap end-link configuration and a mildly better looking bezel then the current version won’t be as collectible. Expect prices of that [current model] to fall by 20%. The new models will then fetch a 140% premium, not a 120% premium. The only threat to the ongoing Rolex Bubble is the Government banning the sale of these watches from 2030, demanding all watches are electric (Quartz). It is so stupid, I half expect it to happen these days .... 😊

It would really hurt Omega then too-LOL
Thanks for the vid.
Hi David
Great video
I acquired from my AD both black and ceramic white dial Daytona steel
Love them both
Today picked up 116519 LN Daytona oysterflex white gold
Love it !!
I like the white dial with the steel bezel and the black dial with the ceramic bezel. That’s what I got from my AD
How long were you on the list and what other purchases ? I’ve made a few and I’m on list 3 years now, was originally told 9, but being told only a couple years now
David, nice video but let's be real, you massively benefit from the bubble. You are doing ten times the number of deals than you would in a non-bubble market.
to say that he does not benefit from a bubble is simply a lie
I think secondary dealers only gripe is that they too have to pay a premium now to make their own margin which is a percentage drop in return on investment. So they have to essentially take a bigger risk in getting their cut. The watches still sell but they have to have more cash tied up in stock.
Id just pay little extra to get full gold oysterflex daytona
It wont shoot up in price from here btw. When new model has better small refinement, old model tend to stay where they are. Take a look at older subc vs 41mm subc. Older subc went up in price for short burst, but quickly came back down
I own both versions in white dial.. and agree the non ceramic is more elegant where as the ceramic is more sporty.
The previous Daytonas looks smaller with the steel bezels compared to the 116500LN and are of course easier to beat up (scratch), so my money is on the latter with the white dial (Panda).
I very much enjoyed your not hype approach to a real and honest objective review. Keep up the great work; I’m a new fan; just subscribed.
Best,
Paulo
Both PC and SS are nice pieces...having a changeable bezel is best of both worlds.
Just bought the black dial with full stickers and set from a local grey dealer LOVE IT
The rolex bubble isn't bursting anytime soon, I thought it would but with clever sales tactics, limited supplies, price increases, discontinued models.
Crazy times
I prefer the steel bezel also!
116520 black
116500 white.
If we get a crisis like 2008 the prices will drop.
If you want to invest, buy Apple/Amazon or more recently Pfizer/AstraZeneca.
Good topic, thanks for sharing.
I have the panda ceramic I paid £21k but I love it to bits.
David, I wish you a long and happy life in good health. With that said, I share your opinion about not living to see the trend shift away from Rolex.
Speculative bubbles never burst, we know that from experience. Prices always go up forever, that always happens, prices never fall.
during the 2008 housing crisis there was definitely a bubble burst
@@cheapandevilgirl that was artificially inflated by unscrupulous lenders with negative am loans and unscrupulous and greedy lenders. Houses nor Tulips are a good analogy to the Rolex situation.
@@chipmacgill unscrupulous and greedy hoarders with thousands of Rolexes.
What model your date just bro ?
I do love that Daytona, David, I think that’s going to be my next Rolex purchase
Are you crazy
@@picanha694 No I'm not crazy, I buy what I like & what suits my lifestyle.
surely hope it will be updated though.. with movement refinements, and most of all a bigger case.
Bro... quality of video is 🔥 I’m glad I’m not into the Daytona... never say never but I cant ever imagine picking one up at retail.
I thought I wasn't into the Daytona until I got one ;)
Not at retail though, I don't have that foot between the door at an AD XD
Thanks bro means a lot🙏 Daytona at retail is a dream for most of us right now 😂
@@Mr.Khalil08 my ad has told me i have a chance in getting this daytona and the jc deepsea sea dweller..Is it worth purchasing both or just getting the one i love the most..
Easy the greatest Rolex. Most iconic watch!
Alan prob have never experienced the price surge like in the last 5-10 yrs before either.
Excellent point
Date is useless unless it an Annual calendar. dont need to change the date every second month! u can never rely on the date.
I am so happy that I was able to pick one up at retail earlier today.
True Vintage Watches never peaked, but modern-made movements and watches produced in mass, don't think art is a correct analogy.
David do you think it’s a good idea to buy a brand new discontinued smurf if I could get for msrp? Let me know your thoughts
If you absolutely love the watch, has been on your list for a good while, and not planning to sell it, by all means get it
The oysterflex Daytona would be better with a glidelock clasp.
Fantastic video lad as usual wish I could have one cheers 🥂. A honest review
Why would they discontinue it soon, the "2" series watches are upgrading to slimmer case lugs and 70 hour power reserves, both of which the 116500 already has, so... The rest of the upgrades in the new watches are minor
Just collected my black dial daytona from the AD on thursday
I'm buying in California. 31k
Great video David. I love both the steel and ceramic - but ceramic has an edge.
Stainless steel bezel with a white dial. It is just a wonderful looking piece.
Generally speaking it's not about prices increasing but value of money decreasing. And steel bezel version for me :)

Always enjoy your videos David
I look at some very highly valued comp's on the stock market that are worth billions and not making any profit - that's a bubble.
dude, what's on the go with the apple watch on your wrist?
David I’m now going to copy you with wearing my I watch and my Rolex lol. I’m team stainless Daytona btw

Rolex ADs may as well just shut shop and supply the armies of greedy flippers full time.
the bit of the video when you film yourself thinking... deep
but back in the days you dont had flippers, watch investors, fake market situations , pushed prices from dealers, if the situation changes, next financial crises comes. at the moment watches like the nautilus dont realy sell , in germany. and if prices drop, the flippers dont buy watches, you can buy normal steel djs again, not wimbledon for 11k. i dont say rolex will worth 0, but maybe less, at the moment the stockmarket is very high, if it crashes more people that bought watches for investing sell to buy cheap crashed stocks, you can see changes like this on gold to
Got one of theses a few weeks ago! They say you should never meet your hero’s 🙈
It’s just a shame it is so difficult to read dial lol
That's why i sold mine, it's useless as a functional chrono
I have no issues Reading it
I like this model. It has a sci-fi look to it. The rest of the Daytonas I have no interest in though. The prices for this version are crazy!
Rolex increasing prices and also inflation keeps prices from going down...nice video

It might as well be discontinued now anyway seeing as you can’t get at retail.
