Today I'm in Chicago on 12-15-17 and sharing the Garfield Clarendon Model Railroad Club that is celebrating their 70th year anniversary.
I’m speaking with President of the Club Dan Gould as he shares details of the layout.
Every area on the layout is complete. The engines, cars, scenery on the layout are of the highest quality, and many items are custom and hand built.
This is just a wonderful experience to view.
The Garfield-Clarenden Model RR Club Operations is located at 4501 N Clarendon Ave, Chicago, IL 60640 and for further details go to www.garfieldcentral.org
    Enjoy.

My dad worked for the Milwaukee Road from the late 50s until it's demise. I love that you have the new Hiawatha train. I grew up in Hampshire, IL which was on the Omaha main line. I used to watch the Cities Of Denver and San Francisco every day whisk by my back yard. I only remember the UP yellow paint scheme. Great layout.

I visited a traditional model railway store in the town of Landshut, Germany earlier this week. I spent a good half hour there, not only looking at the models, but also remembering the many hours I spent building models when I was a young boy. The store was packed and, I’m afraid to say, I was probably the youngest visitor. I’m 51. What was once a popular hobby amongst young boys has now become a pastime for older men. This is a real shame because building models teaches many things; patience, attention to detail and skills in researching to name only three. All have stood me in good stead building my career. To the video. I enjoyed watching the locomotives running at scale speed and background soundtrack,
Anorak fact : railway “ties“ are called “sleepers” in England.

I love the train layout vids! This was very cool! Love seeing the trains n my favorite is hearing the whistles... I just love that! Makes me smile!! So many little details to enjoy, takes time to see it all... I love all the signs and billboards, such fun to see... The old Pepsi sign on the store is very neat! It looks so realistic with all the trees n buildings, even hideaway cabins, and under bridges, and just makes you feel like you've visited, and had a bit of a ride with the sound n sights.... I love it, great fun! Thank you!

For me, the greatest advance in model railroading was introduction of DCC sound. And I’ve been in modeling trains since the 1960’s.
I lean therefore toward what I remember most as a kid in the 1950’s, the sound of a steam locomotive, especially the whistles. To me, diesels always seemed like buses with the diesel smells, the horn sounds, etc. Steam here on Long Island was also the pounding of the ground as a train approached, the beautiful sound of the whistle at a grade crossing, then the aroma of coal smoke.

I agree with the others who have commented on the camera work...slow down and stop darting around from here to there in quick succession. Let the trains in and of themselves be the movement. Getting your camera on a tripod will help you to achieve slowing down as well. I am not trying to be picky, just some advice for a better video . The better your videography work the more enjoyable will be the experience not just for you but everyone else. It is a great layout and just love that hand laid track...brings back lots of memories of the past for me when I did that. Much more realistic and can be made closer to the real thing. Pity (at least for my sake) there had not been a few more seconds of video showing close-up shots of those great turnouts! Having said all that, many thanks for your effort for without it I would never have been able to see it! Fan from Down-Under.

Camera back and forth- we get a great overview and interesting enough we learn what the visitor will be looking at. More importantly though: since this hobby is right in the community center of a troubled city: does the YOUNG generation show interest? Is this place being promoted? It is a great idea allowing the action in this center.

Hi david barrera, Unfortunately as a Partner on RUclips I get a 1/2 hour to video, and with a layout this size, I do the best I can to feature an area and move to the next and get it all in in a 1/2 hour. Many times I'll do a 1 of 2 & 2 of 2, or an "extended cut" but did not have that time on this one. Glad you were able to get some ideas. Have to wonder how many Clarendon Park taxpayers know they are footing the bill for these guys to play with their toy trains (see mercenary 454). The cost of building the venue pales in comparison to the cost of maintaining the place. Seems hard to believe, but stuff like this tends to escape public scrutiny. Now, I gotta know: if this is truly for the community, can I walk in and put my hand on the throttle?

OMG this is a great layout or it could be. The photographer needs to take lessons on so many things. 1. Get a tripod. 2. Learn how to use it. 3. learn not to move the camera so fast. 4. learn not to zoom so fast. Such a bad video I couldn't see much of anything.

I would to say that you pan & zoom much to fast. Also you had the Prez right in front of you. Tha would have been a good time for a walk and talk.
Otherwise very nice layout. I would love to come and play with my trains there!

Lou your camera is way too unstable...its difficult to watch, with way too much blur!
Its too bad how you ruin such lovely railroads with your camera works!
All digital captors (CCD & CMOS) have lots of problems keeping light in order and will pixelate a lot under movement
    1) Stabilize your camera,...if a tripod wont fit, at least with a monopod which will go anywhere..
    2) Make a zoom, a pan or a tilt...its ok.... but never two or three together....and please quit the rocking, back and forth, thats a NO NO! Ideally, stop the auto-focus and make your own manual focus as you go....there are many good rigs out there that are not too expensive to control focus as you shoot
    3) In DOP jargon, pans or tilts are always shot at 7-8 seconds rate for each 35 degrees, less if possible....more than that makes people dizzy!
    4) Make a lot of B-roll wide shots with camera on a tripod, then you can mix it in edit to connect scenes or fill gaps....its NEVER a good idea to try and edit as you shoot
    5) Use 2 mikes: one camera mike for background and another boom mike for the details, like engines...nothing wrong in shooting first , then going around with only the mike to record close ups of engines running...since no one is talking, it is super easy to add the proper sound in edit! Also for your own voice-overs, duplicate them later in post and remove the originals, that way you will be able to mix the sound levels properly...
    6) All sound levels, voice, effects and music score should not exceed -10db with peaks at -6db...avoir 0db to 3db at all costs since computer speakers canot take the over load
Sorry I may be rude, but I see these mistakes so often on RUclips that it gets frustrating
    Cheers and good luck!
    Andre

Looks like a very nice layout, but people who imagine they can just pick up a camera and start filming a masterpiece on their first -- or tenth -- try are deceiving themselves. The filming of this is dreadful. It made me nauseous. Get a professional if you're going to do it at all. Otherwise, you'll have no audience whatever.

Hi David, Thankfully my video which has at the time of your "critic" has 188K+ views. I'm so pleased when you, who are clearly a "real Expert" comments. I'm eager go to see your Channel so I can how it should be done! OHHHH MY THERE IS NOTHING ON YOUR CHANNEL! Well, well, I guess people will just have to deal and watch my (in your opinion) subpar video until you start posting. Stay well, Lou

Lou You should come to Kitchener Ontario here in canada and go around the model train club I belong to. The time you can get in is March 23-25 I'm not to sure. Send me a message on Facebook at Matt Brinson and we can work something out. My picture is a tow truck with Christmas lights on it
