On 9-26-15 at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, I videoed a unbelievably complete model version of Chicago’s buildings and landscape in H.O. Scale / Gauge Model Railroad RR train layouts. The main lines head West to Seattle WA, where there is a small version of those buildings in that City.
Every area on the layout is complete. Many areas have buttons to push so Visitors can have an interactive experience with an area of the layout. The engines, cars, and scenery on the layout are of the highest quality, all add realism, and just a wonderful experience to view.
This is just amazing!
Enjoy. - Развлечения
Spectacular!! In the early 60s we used to hitch-hike from Minneapolis to Chicago just for the museums, including this one (but long before this exhibit was built), the Shedd Aquarium, etc. Life was simpler and safer then - unless you were some guy named Kennedy - and I expanded my hitch-hiking to go all the way to the west coast and back several times, usually to San Diego where I eventually stayed.
Hi Jeff Wells, Happy to read you enjoy this layout :-) I bet those hitch-hikes brought some great stories. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi, from Venezuela, this is a MEGA GIGANTIC layout. The wood and the concrete arch Bridges are AWESOME. The detail is out of this world. the cities are INCREDIBLE..This Museum may have a lot of people taking care of this layout. Thanks for taking us to the Museum trip.
Hi Alejandro, Happy to share this MEGA GIGANTIC layout with you :-) Enjoy reading the details you see. My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
I saw this fantastic model train exhibition at this museum. I'm totally blown away...I would not believe there is a better one anywhere in the world. I love trains and recently took the California Zephyr to Chicago to visit my cousin. This exhibition must be seen in person...to be believed!
Hi sunking2001, Glad you enjoy this layout :-) I've put together a playlist of trains for you I think you'll enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/p/PLkoIzmOYXcchOyKhEHn_2-NqjpNFq64U3

@@loucostabile I read or heard somewhere (who knows where in this multi-media age!) that several Chicago area model railroad clubs pitched in on this project. They sure did a great job!
Majestic ! My home town. Sweet home, Chicago.

Oh, to have a basement big enough for that layout. I have personally seen it several times myself, and it is a fantastic model railroad.
+William Kamp That would be a BIG basement. Great comment. Thank you for viewing, Lou
I can never get enough of that when I go there!
Agreed, might be my favorite part of the museum, it's so well done. Thank you for viewing and commenting, Lou
Haven't seen this since I was a kid over 40 yrs back! I knew they dismantled that layout. This new one looks even better!
That is very coolest layout that I ever seen. I love those tall buildings.
Hi Andrew Crane, Glad you enjoy this layout :-) If you'd like to see the other model RR layouts I've videoed type into RUclips search "Lou Costabile trains" and here is the latest for you. Enjoy! Lou ruclips.net/video/v_96H56DaZ4/видео.html

At 22:47, I think you can make out the house from the early 90’s citcom, “Family Matters.” ;). Yup. That show took place in Chicago.

Thank you so much for this.
+JOHN CHUCKMAN Hi John, Thank you for viewing and for your kind words. Take care, Lou
I see they still have that low bridge I hit with a moving van when I was 20. Great new layout! When I was a kid it was a giant rectangle with O gauge trains and very little in the way of trackside scenery or switching.
Glad you enjoy this layout Phil Rabe :-) Lou
I love that place, evenThe building is amazing.
Hi Bill Barry, Glad you love this place :-) Lou
Lou Costabile that u boat floored me.

+Martin Bruggeman Hi Martin, Thank you for viewing, hope all is well, Lou
Mind boggling! I don't know how people build stuff like this!
I agree with you, just amazing! Thank you for viewing and commenting. Take care, Lou
Very carefully and with a lot of love LOL
When I visited in 2003, I was told the layout cost $3 million!
Magique vraiment formidable 😉😉
:-) I think you'll like this one too. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/v_96H56DaZ4/видео.html
this is a cool layout
+heidilabzioui You have good taste, thanks for viewing, take care, Lou
amazing! would do anything to have my old trains back
It's easy enough. I got my old trains back( in a sense ) after a 20-year absence. Some I bought second & third hand, some brand new.
Have my trains packed away since moving west and losing my huge basement

Awesome!
Glad to read your comment you enjoy this layout :-)
The last time I been there was 7 years ago in June 2010 when I was 11 while visiting Chicago.
Hi Michael Young, Hope the video inspires you to take another trip there again? Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
those trains seriously need to be longer
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I went on one of the tours there and i got to see the train hospital, where they fix the trains if they break :)
Cool, some behind the scenes area, nice. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
In the 60s and 70s the layout was the Southwest US
Hi Rolland, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Weirdly the museum calls it a display or exhibit. Back then it use to be a huge Lionel layout. Then they switched to HO. I actually have a couple of engines from this layout that the volunteers gave to me years ago. They use to throw away or give a way broken engines to others then some reason they stopped doing it. Still it is an a amazing layout!
+TWIGYBNSF That's cool that you received a few engines, nice, take care, Lou
Those ancient warriors (locomotives) that once pounded the rails are retired and now on display in the train repair shop.
I've been where they keep all the engines and rolling stock. Its a secret room.
TWIGYBNSF It's always been my understanding that everything in a museum has to have historical, geographical, and cultural relevance, otherwise it's just stuff... thus becoming a display or exhibit as opposed to JUST a train layout. I'm probably being captain obvious but at any rate this is awesome and amazingly professionally done!
It was not Lionel. It was O Scale. Layout under direction of Santa Fe Railroad personnel.
3:09 Listen closely, you can hear the tesla coil in the background.
:-)
Is there a way that you control the trains here? Would love to run some of my engines. Great video. Spectacular layout you filmed, don't have that in Texas.
Good to know.
While I know this layout represents the whole country it is not a very good layout. If you look on you tube there are lots that are much more realistic with the trains running at scale speeds unlike this with the trains going way to fast. One that comes to mind is Bill Kachels PRR layout. Mindblowing is detail
Hi William, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good news! Here is a link to a playlist I created of model train layouts & trains for you to enjoy and maybe you'll see some layout you enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/p/PLkoIzmOYXcchOyKhEHn_2-NqjpNFq64U3
I was there visiting my family
Hi Juan Ratliff, Nice, hope you had a wonderful time, Lou
i been there 3 times
You can go there just for this layout.
Mountains? There's mountains in Chicago?
No mountains in Chicago.
I'm shocked that out of all that detail not anywhere (unless I grossly over looked it) is there any Foamers anywhere on the layout... none... no little people trackside with cameras in hand or on tri-pods.... interesting I would say.
That's a good point.
When will be there again pls guys let me know I luv it

Chicago layout looks a lot like NYC.
please don't insult Chicago....
Thank you for viewing & sharing.
State Street is not in the layout
:-0
I heard his voice- didn't understand a word.
Hi Homer Township, It's ok, turn the volume off and enjoy the trains :-) Lou
@@loucostabile That's what I did. Still a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for posting.
R the building legos??
Hi, The buildings are not made from Legos. Thank you for viewing and commenting, Lou
No
Really nice layout , just a shame they don't care enough to give it a dusting.
Hi Harry Lanza, Glad you enjoy this layout. Chicago can look kinda dust at times so maybe it's intentional to make the layout authentic with a weathered look :-) Lou
Frequently out of focus and early parts seemed to concentrate more on the buildings than the RR.

Awesome stuff guys... If you have a sec. checkout my model RR club video, "CHERRY VALLEY,O SCALE, 2017" (about #4th in from the newest, pretty nice "two-rail" layout, worth a view)... Thanks so much, Moses...
Hi Moses Knows, I checked out your "Moses Movie" and I can share "Well done", keep up the good work, Lou
I have gone to this museum so many times I'm sick of it
