Big daddy Ken in Ohio here. firstly a good informative video. That said, and I promise you I intend no disrespect or sarcasm, Ive a question and a couple things to say. While we can all agree the potential for over penetration is there with an fmj round, I have yet to see a single documented example of an over penetrating round striking and innocent bystander simply because it was a fmj round. I think it fair to note that many hollow point rounds plug up with material and act as an fmj. But what I have seen is numerous examples of an innocent being hit with an errant shot, that is the shooter missed his intended target and hit something or someone he wasnt shooting at and this can happen with an hp or fmj. I think the fear of fmj ammo is way overblown and I also say it has defensive applications. It stands to reason if fmj is effective in offensive operations with the military it would be effective in defensive situations as well.
The hollows still generally have less mass and inertia but that being said I shot some 380 hollows into a log and then some fmj and the fmj went through but immediately lost all it's energy and was just lying right behind the log on top of the dirt. Not a scientific test but I'd feel equally comfortable hiding behind a pile of firewood from 380 fmj and HP, in an apartment complex I'd maybe opt for HP just to be extra safe from over penetration but I agree it's probably over hyped especially because it doesn't take velocity into account cause standard load fmj will still probably penetrate less than +p HP
Hollow points have their place and purpose but don’t deserve to be labeled the standard for defensive ammunition. If you want consistent performance and reliability regardless of distance, barriers, barrel length, ect.. fmj is still king. tissue damage does not equal lethality and ft/lbs mean absolutely nothing in a vacuum

And just because those are the top performing rounds doesn’t mean they’re the best in each caliber. For example, my test on the federal HST showed me that it can’t handle the sheer speed of the .357 Sig. jacket separation in almost each testing(due to the non bonded bullet) which resulted in that round being taken off my preferred carry load list in that caliber. Same with the Non bonded Ranger T in .357 Sig. with that caliber, Gold Dot is the way to go. The hot loading. Not the reduced penetration loading the FAMS utilized. I always remind people, just as you did today, to test your carry rounds in your carry firearm. What works in mine may not work in yours and vise versa.

Great video explaining the difference between FMJ rounds and HP rounds. Spot on with how different pistols chamber ball ammo and hollow tip ammo. You have to shoot each round through your weapon to see what works. Now, shooting targets at 25yds with a 9mm? That's 75ft. In a self defense scenario, we're talking more like 7yds or 21ft. Again, great video but if you're defeating a target at over 20ft in self defense, good luck in court. Just saying.
I own two 9mm pistols and hollow points are not accurate more than 7-10 yards. I have tried Hornady Critical Defense, Critical Duty, and Winchester jhp at 25 yards and was very inconsistent in each gun.The same guns shoot 6 inch groups at 25 yards with fmj practice ammo
After many years of listening to why this round and not this round, I have also learned through out my life time, is that criminals are species of opportunity! They will almost always wait for their victims to be in secluded places or very low traffic of other humans in order to assault or rob people. They will not hold you up at knife point or with any other weapon in a crowded area or shopping mall. So, that said, why would I really have to worry about over penetration of my ammunition? and hitting an innocent bystander, because their would not be one around. Also! You should never fire a weapon at anyone who has people in his background, that is just not done. You need to know when to stand down or wait for your opportunity to react to an assailant, because if he already has his weapon pointed at you, all you can do is comply and hope you may have an opportunity to draw your weapon and shoot. But, if you make the mistake of trying to go for your weapon, all he has to do is squeeze the trigger and boom your dead. So! Necropsy would tend to refer to the same process on a non human. In this case it sounds like a dissection- or maybe more specifically a dissection for ballistic analyses. Since you are not investigating any sort of cause of death and it is not human remains- autopsy is really not the right term at all. Otherwise great content!
0bviously not all hollow points are created equal. Most hollow points need to exceed at least 1000fps in order to expand efficiently. Barrel length and bullet weight can be a deciding factor in this. This really should have been mentioned.
FMI is the way to go hands down
So, in the JFK assassination, one bullet went straight through two men. The last shot exploded JFK’s head.
Was Oswald using two different types of ammo in his rifle? Or were two different people shooting?
That is the age old question isn't it?
Everybody believes 2nd shooter
Both will kill you so will a plain bullet but I get your point. Nice video for folks that don't know. From a disabled veteran
Open an account at big daddy so that you can see they have nothing in stock and you just wasted your money signing up.
EXACTLY 💯
Im new to firearms and my ? Is why doesn't the military use HP instead of FMJ. I am aware that in war time you want to kill as many as possible, but wouldnt JHPs etc?
Because it’s against the geneva convention and is less effective against armored targets
I'm learning more about these things because im looking forward to being a concealed carrier sooner or later and i will say I'm more of a fan for FMJ when you think about self defense (90-95%) of attackers or enemies are wearing some kind of a cheap retarded pos armor plate. & In my imagination I assume FMJ is great against armor & such against god forbid any kind of fire fight to protect ourselves my guess.
For war use FMJ ! FMJ will always cycle !
Ole Plain
Great video, u just solved a hell of a conversation for us at work
Gotta a lot of simpletons at your company? There isn't a single study showing hollow points are more effective at stopping an attacker than FMJ. Police departments and civilians have been using hollow points for thirty years now, and.....nothing. No data.
Hey all. For me, the only reason i ever considered mixing type ammo, was when in the wild. For bears and such. There is obviously a caliber debate on bears with handguns. Whatever the caliber, I think hitting a bear with through put and stopping ammo is a reasonable argument? Go easy on me please, i cant get non condescending answers from people on this question.
my ruger security .380 accidentally went through my flat screen the bedroom wall and the front window seal oops!
I train with fmj. I know 100% my gun will run with them. Not all guns will run consistently with jhp. If you don't train with jhp I would not recomend you use it.
Hollows are the way to go they’re safer for everyone else around. Fmj’s can fly though walls, hollows stop dead in the intended target
RIP has entered the chat😂
Went to an inside firing range with my brother and the 9 mm kept jamming. It was the ammo
What do you think about the JHP? Let me know!
Turn to the Lord they’re watching and returning get it together before they return 🙏🏽💕
Never knew that hollow points where actually the more responsible round, they get such a bad reputation. Thanks
@@skrittles1628 you have no idea what u are talking about
They should call hollow points insurance bullets, because you don’t really wanna pay for the neighbors kid. Without rule of law, full metal jacket all day long every day long. In this world of lawyers in which we live runaway don’t defend your life don’t shoot to defend your life run away throw your wallet in the air to them and as they catch it turn and run away
The word "autopsy" is used to describe the postmortem examination of a human.
The word "necropsy" is used to describe the postmortem examination of a non-human animal.
Y'all do a cookout afterward? I hear pork roast!
Isn’t the only difference between a normal bullet and hollow point is that the hollow point expands when it hits something to do more damage???

Why put a jacket on a hollow point at all?
Because the lead is too soft it gets stuck in your barrel and could cause a bore obstruction worst case but generally just a pain clean

Doesn't matter all get you gone That's it
💯
No handgun is a better all around man stopper than a 7 to 8 shot 4 to 6 inch 357 Magnum. Throw in s speed load or 2 although u will never need em
10 mm performs a bit better than 357
