I'm 30 year old female. Used to have extremely thick hair until puberty. Started facing hairloss after puberty but its now that i have started noticing my visible scalp on the back of my head. Almost 15 years since hairfall started. What could be the reason? Have used minoxidil on and off. Have been diagnosed with pcos but without any other symptoms except hairloss.

      Hi Deepika Chaudhary,
Sorry to hear about your problem. An examination is needed for a proper diagnosis, but it could be PCOS, female pattern hair loss, or even both. For PCOS-related hair loss, hormone therapy prescribed by your gynecologist can help stabilize hormone levels, and promote hair growth, but it's unclear if you underwent this treatment. Minoxidil delays natural hair shedding so you have more hair on your scalp, but if you use it on and off, you can experience increased hair shedding. A proper diagnosis as featured in the video is needed for female pattern hair loss. I hope this clarifies things for you.

      Hi @allaboutbds6037,
I hope you understand that I can't make a diagnosis without performing a physical examination. That said, diffuse hair thinning, and widening of the part are symptoms of female pattern hair loss. The genes for pattern hair loss can come from several generations from both sides of your family, so it is possible that you have them from a family member you’ve never even met. I hope this clarifies things for you.

      Hi @user-ue3tk8zv8g,
Sorry to hear about your problem. It's important to know that severe hair shedding is most often temporary, and shed hair grows back, so it's not lost. Genetic pattern hair loss is progressive hair thinning, not hair shedding. You still need to be properly diagnosed for the cause of hair shedding, but it is most often severe stress triggering a condition called telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium usually does not require medical intervention for shed hair to grow back, You can refer to this video about the difference of telogen effluvium versus genetic pattern hair loss - ruclips.net/video/AnrxBMvIs2g/видео.html

Hi doc, can we get pattern hair loss from stopping birth control pills? I'm a 24 year old female with a history of PCOS also, so I have a hormonal imbalance. Doctor prescribed me on birth control and months later I got off. Fast forward to another couple of months and my hair is 50 percent gone. I am freaking out & never seen it like this before. I've been on the pill as a teenager & this never happened. Does te normally happen to those in their mid-20s?

    • @AmiyaPrasadMD
      @AmiyaPrasadMD  2 года назад +1

      Hi Reanne Lopez,
First, pattern hair loss is a genetic condition, so it can't be triggered by drug.
Second, PCOS can cause hair thinning, and oral contraceptives are a common treatment to help balance hormone levels. Your hair thinning is likely due to your PCOS, and stopping the contraceptive pill. I suggest you consult with your gynecologist about resuming oral contraceptives to balance your hormone levels, of other hormone therapy they may prescribe for your PCOS. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Thank you for your kind words, Ash Lynx. Very much appreciated. For now, I can best help my patients if I don't spend so much time traveling. Since it is a non-surgical treatment with little to no recovery time, and in many cases no additional treatment, you don't need an extended stay in the US. Many patients actually get back on the plane home the same day as treatment, but I don't recommend this for everyone as it is dependent on general health condition and age. Some patients with advanced hair loss may get a second treatment 15-24 months after the first, and results for international patients are monitored through Skype, FaceTime, or email follow up.

      Hi @meenakshinimbal211,
If you have PCOS which can be a cause of hair thinning, you should see your gynecologist first about stabilizing your hormone levels, usually with oral contraceptives. I generally don't recommend that women take finasteride. If your hair continues to thin after hormone levels are balanced by your gynecologist, then treatment for female pattern hair loss can be considered. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi there, I was diagnosed with MS in March at 25. Not long after my hair started falling out so I thought I had Telogen Effluvium but I went to see the dermatologist just in case. She has told me she thinks my hair loss started telogen effluvium but then triggered androgentic alopecia but we're awaiting scalp biopsy results. I have been using Minoxodil for a few months and it's stopped falling out as much, although I have lost a lot of my hair. Does this sound possible? There is so much conflicting information out there and hardly anything on how one can trigger the other. Most of my symptoms align with telogen effluvium - I don't understand how I've lost so much hair so quickly. When I research

      Hi @FallenRainbow03,
Sorry to hear about your problems. It is possible to have telogen effluvium, and pattern hair loss at the same time, but telogen effluvium can't trigger pattern hair loss as it's caused by genetics. Pattern hair loss progressive hair thinning, not higher than normal hair shedding. Shed hair does grow back, Pattern hair loss happens when the shed hair grows back thinner, and there is a delay in regrowth. I suggest you wait for biopsies to confirm if you have genetic pattern hair loss before starting on treatment for it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Last year i had an episode of excessive shedding of 4-5 months in which i shedding 300-400 strands of hair. Hair fall stopped on its own and again this year from july i started loosing 100 starns everyday which increased to 600-700 strands daily. I am getting mini heart attack every time i touch, wash and comb hair. They are falling out in clumps. I dont have any hair left on my head. My first demat said its female pattern hairloss and second said its telogen effluvium. Hairfall just does not stop. Nothing is working whether it is minoxidil, prp, redensyl. Everything seems useless in my case. And i dont even know my exact diagnosis

      Hi @jagdeepkaur8798,
Sorry to hear about your problem. It is possible to have hair shedding due to telogen effluvium, and hair thinning due to genetic pattern hair loss concurrently. Minoxidil can delay natural hair shedding, so when stopping it, hair shedding can get worse. It is also possible for PRP to trigger hair shedding, as it's primarily a treatment to treat hair thinning. I would also have to examine your scalp to determine your exact diagnosis. I hope this helps you.

Washing your hair every day is not something you should be averse to, and daily hair washing will not accelerate or worsen pattern hair loss. If you want other treatments for an oily scalp, you can consult a dermatologist as it's something beyond my practice focus. I hope this helps you.

All men have a significant level of DHT in their system, so a blood test isn't a reliable indicator. Hi Steffany Henderson,
It is highly likely that it androgenetic/androgenic alopecia. Keep in mind that androgenetic alopecia does make up about 95 of hair loss cases. I hope this clarifies things for you.

      Hi@@ashleyjudd1789,
Androgenetic alopecia is the leading cause of hair thinning, but some hair thinning as we get older is normal, even if it progresses very slowly and is not noticeable hair loss. In some people, this type of slow, progressive hair thinning is a good thing because it makes thicker, coarser hair more manageable with time. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Around 2 years ago I noticed a lot more hairfall in the shower with a white bulb on the end that has not stopped since then. I read online that the white bulb on all of my shedding hairs is indicative of telogen effluvium. But could it still be female pattern baldness?

    • @AmiyaPrasadMD

      Hi A XP,
Telogen effluvium is stress-related hair shedding that happens suddenly, while female pattern baldness is progressive hair thinning that happens over a longer period. Female pattern hair loss doesn't stop suddenly as it's a genetic condition that isn't cured, but it can be managed to maximize hair thickness. Hi@@YRSLM,
Nearly all cases of female pattern hair loss follows a diffuse pattern, but there can be exceptions. Diffuse hair thinning means that thinning hair are close together, so a hair transplant with sharp implanters will likely damage adjacent hair follicles, causing more loss. You can refer to these videos about why I don't recommend hair transplants for women with diffuse hair thinning; and why our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment is more appropriate for thickening diffuse hair thinning:

Dengue or other illnesses may cause severe stress on the body that causes temporary hair shedding known as telogen effluvium, but it won't trigger pattern hair loss or hair thinning as that is due to genetics.

It does take awhile for hair follicles to completely stop growing hair, usually if hair has not grown out of a follicle for 5 years or more, the follicle is likely dead. Hi Aafaq rasool,
It's not clear if you have androgenetic alopecia as it's a progressive condition of hair thinning, so it doesn't start suddenly.
Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. I suggest you consult your doctor about weaning yourself off minoxidil to prevent a sudden hair shed.
As for androgenetic alopecia, these videos feature the factors for men, and how we diagnose and treat it in our male patients:

I only advise treatment for facial volume changes due to aging, or if there is a genetic volume deficiency. You can refer to this video about it - ruclips.net/video/DpTPMpi_t3s/видео.html

      Hi,
I'm not familiar with surgeons in India, and Nepal, so I suggest you research into it, and contact prospective doctors to see if they can help your case. I hope this helps you.

Hello sir I am from India
My hair turned to redish colour on full head..
After some times the hair on the top part starts falling and thinned
I am testing evary kind of tests . But no achivement
The d3 and b12 are low.. so the supplements are also using...
The hair on donor also thin but density is good compare with top.. it's that androgen alopecia or vitamin defficiency hairloss?

      Hi Sachin S,
Sorry to hear about your problem, but there is generally no hair loss cause by vitamin deficiencies, although significant malnutrition may make hair brittle and prone to breakage at the shaft. You do need to have a proper scalp examination by an experienced doctor to diagnose for pattern hair loss/ androgenetic alopecia. I hope this clarifies things for you.

      Hi StFrancis1982,
As on oculoplastic surgeon, and as a cosmetic surgeon, I've been administering Botox to patients since before it became a popular cosmetic treatment, but I've administered Botox mostly for cosmetic treatments over the years. What are you looking to treat? You can refer to this video about what Botox can, and can't treat - ruclips.net/video/ay4Otw-RBCE/видео.html
