  • What is Alopecia Areata?
In today's video you're going to learn about a widespread hair loss condition called Alopecia Areata-- specifically, the causes, symptoms, and how to recovery from the problem. Alopecia Areata is an inflammatory stress-induced-- sometimes, trauma-based-- hair loss where your body disrupts the growth cycle of the individual hair follicles in the predisposed area. Areata Areata hair loss can occur anywhere from the neck up. It will typically happen in small circles and either emerge or expand. It's a fluid, on-going inflammatory hair loss problem that comes with many other symptoms outside of the obvious hair shedding.
Some of these Alopecia Areata symptoms include itching, smooth appearance to the scalp, fine broken hairs in the area, or it can even expand and turn into Alopecia Totalis which is full scalp and facial hair loss. And if that condition is left untreated, it can essentially lead to Alopecia Universalis which is a full body loss of hair. Watch this video to learn more about Alopecia Areata hair loss-- the causes, symptoms, recovery process, and beyond.
What is alopecia areata and what can you do about it? Let's talk about it. Alopecia areata is an inflammatory stress induced, sometimes trauma-based hair loss, where essentially your body is disrupting the growth cycle of the individual hair follicles in the predisposed area. So you can really have areata happen essentially anywhere from the neck up. And that is just where this type of inflammatory hair loss manifests itself. Now areata, it typically will happen in small circles and then actually expand. You can actually get a circle over here and a circle over there, and then they begin to merge or they move. It is sort of this fluid, ongoing type of inflammatory hair loss. Some people have itching, some people have this very smooth appearance to the scalp. Some people have this very fine sort of broken hairs in the area, but it's all part of alopecia areata.
Now it can also expand and turn into a much greater form of hair loss. So it can start off as this little circle and then essentially turn into what is called alopecia totalis, which could be full scalp and face loss of hair, basically anywhere from the neck up. You can lose eyelashes, eyebrows, even ear hair. And when you then obviously take that a step further, then there's something called alopecia universalis and universalis is actually a full-body loss of hair. So a lot of times people refer to this type of alopecia as alopecia, but it's actually obviously it has very specific names.
Because alopecia is just the specific medical term for hair loss.
When you look at all of the different reasons and the different predispositions that might allow you to be dealing with alopecia areata a lot of times there's a genetic history that for you manifest itself as alopecia areata, or you might actually have alopecia areata in your family. Additionally, you have some nutritional problems that can lead to a predisposition to alopecia areata. So typically low ferritin and low vitamin D3 can actually aggravate an underlying predisposition to alopecia areata. And sometimes, actually there are different exposures, like chemical exposure that may lead to a general plausibility of an inflammatory scalp condition or an inflammatory hair loss. And
I've seen actually all of those that I just mentioned in clinical practice manifesting themselves in different ways, producing a more aggravated or producing alopecia areata itself.
I'm going to go into talking about this a little bit more in detail, what you can do about it and personally things that I've witnessed that may be a powerful way for you to help try to treat this from the typical mainstream items. So we'll get into that now...

This was very informative & gave me somewhere to start. I currently have Alopecia Universalis. As the doc stated in this vid, catch it before it gets worse.
I say catch it early because I had a full set of hair and beard before 2016 & could have maybe mitigated my hair loss if I had this information at that time 🤷🏽‍♂️ welp 5 years too late eh? Anyways, I had a nickel size soft patch on my beard & was like oh that's weird. Time went on & within like 3 to 6 months it grew rapidly to a golf ball size of missing hair on my beard & then my head started to patch 9 to 11 months in, then my eye brows, eye lashes, then body hair. it all happened so quik & was hoping it would all just come back but it didn't. I tried steroid injections, but no change, I was apprentice on taking medications to lower my immune system.
fast forward, im 33 years now, still with total hair loss, but interestingly enough my eye brows are kinda coming in, my facial hair & head hair tries to come on strong, but its so spotty. So I say all this, because I might do a RUclips vlog about my steps to getting my hair back, thanks Doctor, you have planted a fruitful seed.

@@Aurla-R2-D2 so I do have hair growth on my scalp and beard, and it does seem to be trying to comeback. I have allowed it to grow out in the past which takes a very long time. It grows back without pigmentation, and is very frail. By the time it grows back and I'm getting used to it, it starts falling out again, so at this point, I keep it shaved and have come to accept it in as much as someone can. What bothers me the most is not having eyebrows or eyelashes.
I always had a small spot on my face where hair wouldn't grow. It turns out, my grandmother had alopecia and thats why she wore a wig for years. Her hair did come back.
I believe the trigger for me was I had some pool chemicals that water had found its way into. When I opened the bucket, it was in a gaseous state, and kind of exploded in my face.
My hair began to fall out shortly afterwards to the point where I had to shave my head within a month or so.
Also, I have always lived with stress and trauma, and I do believe this plays a role as well.

I had allergies so my life and I’ve gotten better and worse and I think the fact that I’m allergic to exposure of freshwater and also emotional distress has been making it worse. I barely have any hair in my body. My hair is falling like crazy and it’s so so dry. I do have other things in my body that are going on like treatments so really all together. I tried to stay as calm as possible and take it day one day. It makes me sad that I took care of my hair for such a long time and now he’s falling. But things are out of control. I want answers and results now and that’s not how life works.

I have A Areata, it's in my genes via my mother. 15 years ago I got A. Totalis. Later Apnea was found during a sleeping test so no wonder I lost my hair. My cortisol level was through the roof. I had throat surgery, lost weight, changed my diet and started working out. But only when I starte ddoing cold water swimming my hair started to grow back. My body has hair again and I got some facial hair. But no lashes, eyebrows and scalp hair. I could feel it but something was blocking it. Since my Apnea I was taking high blood pressure medication Lisinopril and I got more and more side effects. Then I found out it does cause hair loss so I stopped the medication. I now try to regulate my blood pressure natuarally and hopefully it has a positive effect on my hair growth. Winter is here so also lots of cold water immersion. This has been proven to cure lots of auto immune deseases as Crohn and Rheumatic desease.

Thank you for sharing your journey with Alopecia Areata and the steps you've taken to address it. It's fascinating to hear how lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and unique methods like cold water swimming, have impacted your hair regrowth. Your experience highlights how complex and individualized the response to Alopecia Areata can be.
Regarding Lisinopril and its potential side effects on hair, it's indeed true that some medications can influence hair health. It's great that you're taking a proactive approach to manage your blood pressure naturally. However, always ensure that any changes in medication are discussed with your healthcare provider.
Your approach to using cold water immersion as a treatment is intriguing. While there's ongoing research into the effects of cold therapy on autoimmune diseases, it's always important to proceed cautiously and under medical guidance, especially with conditions like Alopecia Areata.

Hi doctor , I’ve suffered from Alopecia areata for 10yrs I’ve tried injections and topical solutions all the creams /minoxidil also I’m currently using L tyrosine and I seem to be getting some benefits I’ve been using it 4 months now , I have 5 patches in total 2 big coin size on my top and 2 very small coin on 1 side of my head and another medium coin size on the other side , the patches on my sides seem to be growing back it’s currently at about 75/80% but my top patches don’t seem to be going so well I’m considering getting a transplant for the top as these patches haven’t grown back in 5yrs , could that work for me ?

Will it work if I got an autoimmune issue. I had issues with anemia and diabetic. I was in the hospital in 2020. My iron level was 5. I got 2 bags iron fusion before leaving hospital. I was losing hair. Also my A1C was very high and lost weight went from 146 to 109. My iron level kept going up so now my ferritin level is 18. The dermatologist check my vitamin D and zinc and it is normal. My hair still falls out. I get an itch or sometimes a sting around edges. I have to scratch or rub so the feeling goes and hair falls each. Some parts of scalp constantly itch. I got so bumps and scalp pain. Dermatologist will not do biopsy and feels maybe systematic. I was giving clebstrol and antibiotic lotion but hair still falls. Now red blood cells is too high and I currently being sent rehuemtologist. Ond blood work looks like a mixture of autoimmune diseases so we do additional blood work. Will the melatonin solution work for me if it is autoimmune.

Hello doctor, I have a quick question. Sometime in my late 20’s - early 30’s, I lost all the hair on my legs and arms, my underarms just got thin, but the head on my head was fine. In my late 40’s, I lost the hair behind my ears and my crown was thinner. It all grew back. In my mid-50’s it all came out again and is slowly spreading.
My question is: Was the initial loss of hair on my arms and legs a precursor to getting alopecia later in life?

    • @AskDrRita
      @AskDrRita 2 года назад +2

Alopecia areata is a recurrent nonscarring type of hair loss that can affect any hair-bearing area and can manifest in many different patterns!
The initial hair loss you had is still part of the complex in the pathophysiology of the Alopecia that who are experiencing!
Alopecia areata is nonscarring thus there is regrowth of the lost hair unlike in scarring alopecia where hair loss is irreversible!!
      Hope this helps 🙏
      Kind regards,
      Dr. Rita😊

It sounds like there was an inflammatory situation happening that led to that. Potentially low thyroid would be the first thing that comes to mind. Additionally there may be an auto immune scenario that could be impacting you as well but at this point I would run a full blood panel to understand your current state to assist with any of the scalp hair issues.

Seen a doctor and they say its alopecia aerata but my parents says its a ringworm because this kinda hair loss is contagious.
There's no family history of hair loss.

It's great that you're looking into all possible causes of your alopecia. Mold exposure isn't typically linked directly to alopecia areata, which is generally considered an autoimmune condition. However, environmental factors can sometimes play a role in overall health and immune system function. If you suspect mold exposure is affecting your health, it might be worth discussing with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and testing if necessary.
