This was very informative & gave me somewhere to start. I currently have Alopecia Universalis. As the doc stated in this vid, catch it before it gets worse.
I say catch it early because I had a full set of hair and beard before 2016 & could have maybe mitigated my hair loss if I had this information at that time 🤷🏽‍♂️ welp 5 years too late eh? Anyways, I had a nickel size soft patch on my beard & was like oh that's weird. Time went on & within like 3 to 6 months it grew rapidly to a golf ball size of missing hair on my beard & then my head started to patch 9 to 11 months in, then my eye brows, eye lashes, then body hair. it all happened so quik & was hoping it would all just come back but it didn't. I tried steroid injections, but no change, I was apprentice on taking medications to lower my immune system.
fast forward, im 33 years now, still with total hair loss, but interestingly enough my eye brows are kinda coming in, my facial hair & head hair tries to come on strong, but its so spotty. So I say all this, because I might do a RUclips vlog about my steps to getting my hair back, thanks Doctor, you have planted a fruitful seed.

@@Aurla-R2-D2 so I do have hair growth on my scalp and beard, and it does seem to be trying to comeback. I have allowed it to grow out in the past which takes a very long time. It grows back without pigmentation, and is very frail. By the time it grows back and I'm getting used to it, it starts falling out again, so at this point, I keep it shaved and have come to accept it in as much as someone can. What bothers me the most is not having eyebrows or eyelashes.
I always had a small spot on my face where hair wouldn't grow. It turns out, my grandmother had alopecia and thats why she wore a wig for years. Her hair did come back.
I believe the trigger for me was I had some pool chemicals that water had found its way into. When I opened the bucket, it was in a gaseous state, and kind of exploded in my face.
My hair began to fall out shortly afterwards to the point where I had to shave my head within a month or so.
Also, I have always lived with stress and trauma, and I do believe this plays a role as well.

Myself decreased my hair fall with these. Detangle your hair gently with a wide-toothed wooden comb to prevent breakage, especially when hair is wet and more likely to breakage. Use litttllextra cocoonian hair oil shampoo combo twice a week. This is important step of my hair care routine and performed well in hair fall reduction.

I first started to lose my hair after the death of my son in 2002.
Shortly after I lost my eyebrows, which my family thought was worthy of mocking and making fun of me.
I still have a head of hair though it is very fine.

I like the way that he talk. It was very relatable. I had allergies so my life and I’ve gotten better and worse and I think the fact that I’m allergic to exposure of freshwater and also emotional distress has been making it worse. I barely have any hair in my body. My hair is falling like crazy and it’s so so dry. I do have other things in my body that are going on like treatments so really all together. I tried to stay as calm as possible and take it day one day. It makes me sad that I took care of my hair for such a long time and now he’s falling. But things are out of control. I want answers and results now and that’s not how life works.

I noticed I got overwhelmed with taking all of these products, and I noticed hair loss 😁 let’s just say I don’t miss a day anymore. 😁😂🤣 my body is emotional, and I’ve had four knee surgeries and one spine surgery (basketball) I run 🏃🏽 now, and I’ve noticed that when I exercise my hair actually grows. I have A Areata, it's in my genes via my mother. 15 years ago I got A. Totalis. Later Apnea was found during a sleeping test so no wonder I lost my hair. My cortisol level was through the roof. I had throat surgery, lost weight, changed my diet and started working out. But only when I starte ddoing cold water swimming my hair started to grow back. My body has hair again and I got some facial hair. But no lashes, eyebrows and scalp hair. I could feel it but something was blocking it. Since my Apnea I was taking high blood pressure medication Lisinopril and I got more and more side effects. Then I found out it does cause hair loss so I stopped the medication. I now try to regulate my blood pressure natuarally and hopefully it has a positive effect on my hair growth. Winter is here so also lots of cold water immersion. This has been proven to cure lots of auto immune deseases as Crohn and Rheumatic desease.

Thank you for sharing your journey with Alopecia Areata and the steps you've taken to address it. It's fascinating to hear how lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and unique methods like cold water swimming, have impacted your hair regrowth. Your experience highlights how complex and individualized the response to Alopecia Areata can be.
Regarding Lisinopril and its potential side effects on hair, it's indeed true that some medications can influence hair health. It's great that you're taking a proactive approach to manage your blood pressure naturally. However, always ensure that any changes in medication are discussed with your healthcare provider.
Your approach to using cold water immersion as a treatment is intriguing. While there's ongoing research into the effects of cold therapy on autoimmune diseases, it's always important to proceed cautiously and under medical guidance, especially with conditions like Alopecia Areata.

Hello doctor, I have a quick question. Sometime in my late 20’s - early 30’s, I lost all the hair on my legs and arms, my underarms just got thin, but the head on my head was fine. In my late 40’s, I lost the hair behind my ears and my crown was thinner. It all grew back. In my mid-50’s it all came out again and is slowly spreading.
My question is: Was the initial loss of hair on my arms and legs a precursor to getting alopecia later in life?

    • @AskDrRita
      @AskDrRita 2 года назад +2

Alopecia areata is a recurrent nonscarring type of hair loss that can affect any hair-bearing area and can manifest in many different patterns!
The initial hair loss you had is still part of the complex in the pathophysiology of the Alopecia that who are experiencing!
Alopecia areata is nonscarring thus there is regrowth of the lost hair unlike in scarring alopecia where hair loss is irreversible!!
      Hope this helps 🙏
      Kind regards,
      Dr. Rita😊

It sounds like there was an inflammatory situation happening that led to that. Potentially low thyroid would be the first thing that comes to mind. Additionally there may be an auto immune scenario that could be impacting you as well but at this point I would run a full blood panel to understand your current state to assist with any of the scalp hair issues.

Will it work if I got an autoimmune issue. I had issues with anemia and diabetic. I was in the hospital in 2020. My iron level was 5. I got 2 bags iron fusion before leaving hospital. I was losing hair. Also my A1C was very high and lost weight went from 146 to 109. My iron level kept going up so now my ferritin level is 18. The dermatologist check my vitamin D and zinc and it is normal. My hair still falls out. I get an itch or sometimes a sting around edges. I have to scratch or rub so the feeling goes and hair falls each. Some parts of scalp constantly itch. I got so bumps and scalp pain. Dermatologist will not do biopsy and feels maybe systematic. I was giving clebstrol and antibiotic lotion but hair still falls. Now red blood cells is too high and I currently being sent rehuemtologist. Ond blood work looks like a mixture of autoimmune diseases so we do additional blood work. Will the melatonin solution work for me if it is autoimmune.

can blunt force trauma to the head cause it? will it come back after the area recovers?

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  Месяц назад

Yes, blunt force trauma to the head can indeed cause hair loss, usually due to a few different mechanisms. Here's a breakdown of what happens and what to expect:
      ### How Trauma Leads to Hair Loss
      1. **Physical Damage to Hair Follicles**: If the scalp experiences trauma, the hair follicles in that area can be physically damaged. This can lead to localized hair loss, often called *traction alopecia* or *scarring alopecia* if there's significant injury to the skin.
      2. **Telogen Effluvium**: Sometimes, trauma can trigger *telogen effluvium*, a condition where stress (including physical trauma) pushes hair follicles into the resting phase, causing widespread shedding a few months later.
      3. **Inflammation**: Injury often leads to inflammation, which can temporarily disrupt hair growth in the affected area.
      ### Will the Hair Come Back?
In many cases, yes-but it depends on the severity of the trauma:
      - **Minor Trauma**: If the trauma didn't cause permanent damage to the hair follicles, then hair growth can often resume once the area heals and inflammation reduces.
      - **Scarring or Severe Damage**: If the trauma caused scarring, hair may not regrow in that area. Scarring can damage the follicles permanently, and this type of hair loss may require treatments like scalp micropigmentation or hair transplant surgery if desired.
      ### Tips for Recovery
      - **Gentle Care**: Be gentle with the area to allow it to heal. Avoid any additional pressure or pulling.
      - **Scalp Massages**: Once the area is no longer tender, gentle massages may help boost circulation and support recovery.
      - **Consider Topicals**: Treatments like minoxidil may help stimulate regrowth in non-scarred areas, but consult a specialist before starting.
If you're concerned about hair regrowth, it can be helpful to check with a trichologist or dermatologist to determine the extent of damage and any tailored treatments.

    What about low dose naltrexone?

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  4 месяца назад +1

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has been gaining attention as a potential treatment for autoimmune conditions, including alopecia areata. Here’s how it might relate to alopecia areata and its possible benefits:
      1. How Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) Works
Immune Modulation: LDN is thought to work by modulating the immune system. It temporarily blocks opioid receptors in the body, which in turn causes an increase in endorphin and enkephalin production when the receptors are unblocked. These molecules are believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect and help regulate the immune response.
Reduction of Autoimmune Activity: Since alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, LDN may help by reducing this inappropriate immune response, potentially allowing hair to regrow.
      2. LDN and Alopecia Areata
Potential Benefits: Some anecdotal reports and small studies suggest that LDN could help reduce the severity of alopecia areata, leading to hair regrowth in some patients. The exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, but the immune-modulating properties of LDN seem to be key.
Limited Research: While promising, the research on LDN for alopecia areata is still limited, and more extensive clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness and establish appropriate dosing guidelines.
      3. Safety and Side Effects
Well-Tolerated: LDN is generally well-tolerated, especially at the low doses used for autoimmune conditions (typically 1.5 to 4.5 mg per day). Common side effects may include vivid dreams, insomnia, or headaches, but these are usually mild and transient.
Consultation Required: As with any treatment, it’s essential for patients to consult with a healthcare provider before starting LDN, particularly since it is not yet widely recognized as a standard treatment for alopecia areata.
      4. Considerations
Adjunct Therapy: LDN is often used as part of a broader treatment strategy. It might be combined with other treatments, such as corticosteroids, minoxidil, or immunotherapy, depending on the severity of the alopecia areata.
LDN offers a potentially promising option for managing alopecia areata, particularly for those looking for alternatives or adjuncts to conventional treatments. However, given the current state of research, it's considered more experimental, and patients should discuss the risks and benefits with their healthcare provider.
