I just posted a remark re stress being a trigger. The person I know who has alopecia was going through a stressful period. I have suffered from alopecia areata my entire life. (60 yrs,) I can deeply relate with your struggle. I appreciate you sharing the current treatments and your efforts to bring attention to this emotionally draining condition.
The females in my family, on both sides, lose their eyebrows and hair. I was recently diagnosed with scarring alopecia consistent with lichen planus, so we know why now, it's still extremely difficult to be a balding female with no eyebrows.

As a person with chronic illnesses I find it heartwarming to hear about you, as a doctor, sharing your story with alopecia. I find there feels like such a gap of experience between myself and the doctors/GPs I see because they have never had to experience medical issues that are quite life changing. I have sadly had really negative and sometimes plain ignorant interactions with them, making it hard for me to trust them, and want to reach out when I need help. Thank you for the bravery in sharing your story, you look awesome and I love the care, thought and nuance that you show in your work and reaction videos. Sending lots of good vibes 😊
Your appearance with less hair is more elegant. You went from William Riker to Jean Luc Picard. Good looking to Good looking. And your presentation of your experience is excellent.
I started watching his videos because his lack of hair gave him this ethereal beauty, stuck around for the quality of the content. Fiiiiinally found this and have closure. People are often very attached to their hair as a part of their identity / self-expression. I hope he understands how handsome he is, not despite, but because of his condition.
I agree he looks good with our hair, but it's sad to see what he went through and explains why he is such a good doctor. He cares, he really does. He is in this to help people. Not take advantage of them. He is a good person. Hugs from Iowa thank you from sharing your journey 💕
Gorgeous smile! Perfect skin! Bald is Beautiful on you! Hair is over rated Doc! You look fabulous 😍 I lost all my hair last year during chemo. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. 💪 Hugs
I recently discovered Dr. Gary and I liked his look off the bat. Today I decided to go through his older videos and was shocked to see him with thick, dark hair. This video in particular, has given me such a new found respect for this man. What he went through must have been incredibly painful and sharing it must have been so difficult...but the way he handled it was truly truly amazing. I'm sure that many others going through this will gain strength after watching this
Yea, you actually look more handsome bald, especially with the glasses. Your head and nose are perfectly shaped and it's interesting how masculinizing a smooth head looks compared to having hair.
He does have fantastic bone structure and very smooth skin. He should be happy that he's alive and has a profession which I believe he blessed to have.
He’s a handsome guy, good proportions, good bones, But! the eyeglass frames are too dark, too harsh, and make it real hard to find his eyes. Transparent or very light metal frames would provide an illusion of eyebrows with the way the light would subtly play, without hiding or detracting from his eyes. JMHO.
Emotional and psychological sides of hair loss are often severely overlooked by people that are not affected by it, including healthcare professionals. I hope you've had a good support system and was able to fall back on your extensive knowledge on the topic when things were getting rough. I am absolutely sure your patients receive the best and most compassionate care from you, not only because you're a good doctor, but also because you actually have first-hand experience relating to hair and autoimmune issues. I have suffered from both myself, and I'm glad you're sharing your personal experience, providing medical information simultaneously.
It's clear to all of us that this is such a difficult process to go through, but I have found so much love and support through my journey and I have really gotten to feel proud of myself. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and process with all of us. It's inspiring and helpful to see more and more stories about brave people educating others and making a big deal like this visible to all of the community.
i suffer from this, not as agressively, but for about 2 months now. 1 big patch on the top and 1 small patch just above the neck line in the back. And i get your point. most people just undervalue the condition and make comments like : "just wear a hat" or "just buzz cut it, you look awful that way". Its not just an imune system caused condition, its also a mental journey you have to put up to. Its quite true that people only value this when its happening to them personally. So a big hug and support to you all that are suffering from this, you're strong and handsome, never forget that!
I honestly thought you were shaving on purpose cause, man, you rock this look! Still, it must be a difficult journey for you, so I give you a massive virtual hug. Keep the wonderful work!
Kudos for the forthright sharing of your experience with alopecia areata. Your matter of fact presentation of its progression and the different treatments available is a healthy model for others to see and emulate. And, as many others have already stated, you wear "no hair" well! Your mother must be proud. 😉
Doc, one thing about your hair loss is it does not define who you are, with that being said you are very special and gifted and just shared a part of your life in order to help others. Thank you handsome!
Gary, Thank you so much for sharing your alopecia journey. You are giving courage to many in your work for others and in what you share of yourself. Thank you. We have alopecia in our family. So I understand vicariously how frustrating and distressing it can me. For myself I transitioned recently (at Norwood 5 in my mid fifties) to my current configuration of bald plus beard. For me it was one of the most liberating, and confidence-boosting things I have ever done! I remember going into the supermarket the evening of my big chave, and two young guys (hip, style captains) who usually served me in the bottle shop came out from behind their desks to check me out. They were enthusiastic told me, "You rock that look! You looks way younger!" For me as an older guy, testing these strange new waters, it was a great moment. And I want to say that you, Gary, look great both with and without! Thank you again. Health and Peace, Paul
Great video on Alopecia. It’s a very mysterious condition. I developed it in my mid twenties also. Previously asthmatic allergies came up first. Environment and stress factors but I also had swollen lymph’s on one side . I was working such long hours and moving alot at the time so I never had time to address it. When I quit my crazy hour jobs day job/ night job and environment and moved out to the countryside it gradually grew back .
It must be difficult existing in the plastics industry with a visible condition, like alopecia areata, and I’m so sorry that you’ve had that burden placed on you. The fact that you’re being so transparent about it will help more people than you know, and I am in awe of your courage. I truly hope you also find some healing through that process. Additionally, and I hope this translates with the correct intent, I believe it puts you in a unique position to truly understand and empathize, in a way many surgeons can’t, with the needs and concerns of your patients. I’ve had to undergo multiple corrective surgeries following a severe dog attack on my face, and it just so happened that my surgeon had also experienced a facial dog attack the year prior, which perversely helped put me at ease before the initial emergency reconstruction. I’ve found immense healing through transparency about various issues, and more importantly, I’ve connected on a level I never expected with my community. Through sharing your story, you’re helping to remove decades of ignorance that led to unnecessary stigmas about *relatively* common concerns amongst the broader population… on RUclips no less! Kudos to you, sir! You’re a bonafide hero!
I've been bald since I was 21, and the worst phase is when it's straggly. Once you bite the bullet and shave your head, it immediately feels better. You look absolutely fine now. What matters is what goes on inside your head, not on it, so you're definitely ok.
I’m here because I was randomly recommended one of your newer videos. My first reaction was “wow, he looks so striking. What an unusual beauty.” It may seem ironic but I think it’s awesome to have a hair restoration surgeon who looks amazing without any hair. I think that would give a lot of other men confidence that being bald doesn’t mean you’re ugly in any way, shape, or form.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey. You don’t know just how much you are helping thousands of people just by this one video. I have many strip like scars along my forehead and donor region from punch graft hair transplants that were performed on me when I was 18! I wore a hair piece for 25 years to hide not just the MPB but more so the scars. Four years ago I just thought to hell with it and shaved my head like you have. Today I own my appearance and scars and I have dug deep to find a new sense of confidence not based on my head/face. The shaved head look really suits you and highlights your eyes and smile. Thanks for sharing. 🙏
I have a beautiful sister in law who went through everything you describe - maybe not as many medical remedies - but now just wears a lovely wig and has had some "permanent" makeup for brows and lids, and I am so proud of her. I know it was very difficult for her, as I'm sure it's been for you. Great admiration for everyone who goes through this, and comes to some peace with it. Thanks for telling your story. You are no doubt serious inspo to a lot of people. Cheers!
i couldn't even tell from your recent video's that you had alopecia, you're one of those lucky people that look amazing with or without hair. cant wait for part 2 of your journey, I'm so invested now!
You look great bald. Not even just saying that to be a "feelings repair warrior" either (I just made that up). If I thought you looked bad, I wouldn't even comment, but you really don't dude. You have excellent facial features, and your head shape is perfect for baldness. The only thing I'd say you should always do to maintain the look is stay thin. I really dig the look.
I can only imagine how difficult it is to come to terms with this kind of condition - especially considering your profession, Dr. I empathise with this but I can also tell that you have dealt with it in a healthy and inspiring way. And you're as handsome as ever.
Oh, wow. You are handling your health conditions with so much grace and dignity. You don’t let it hold you back. You don’t whine and complain. You’re an inspiration!
I've had this condition for just over a decade. Currently I have hair, but I've had steroid shots for minor lesions. This condition can take a toll on your self esteem, anxiety, and ability to socialize. It hit me during a pretty significant developmental stage. The hair has come back and fallen out randomly. Cudos to you for sharing this and remaining optimistic!
I watch you all the time. Just saw this long after the fact. You look fabulous with or without your hair. Thank you for the evidence based reviews without bias or politics.
As someone that has been in the hair industry for a very long time, I find this subject so very interesting. I have had clients struggling with hair loss. I have tried to help them navigate through the emotional loss of how they use to look to how they are becoming. I love how you have adapted to the you that you have become. I salute you.
So transparent, thoughtful and kind. You are a humanist PHYSICIAN along with being competent you must be very kind, reassuring and respectful with your patients. Handsome sans head hair.
Thankyou Gary. My nephews journey with Alopecia Areata has been very similar to yours. He started to lose his eyebrows when he was around 10. At 17 he was completly hairless; I hadn't seen him for a while and I was shocked, but so proud of his bravery. He had steroid injections which he responded to very well; however in recent months (his now 25) it's all gone again. I'll follow your story and hope you get some results. In the meantime Joe has a girlfriend who loves him for how he is x
Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve had AA since 1980 and developed AT in 2019. I appreciate you for helping educate others on this condition! It’s important to talk about!! Best wishes in your journey!
Exactly, what I was thinking! Dr. Gary Linkov is a very handsome man with or without hair. In general he's a real sweetheart to boot and incredibly intelligent. If I can ever afford plastic surgery again, I'd certainly head up to NY for him. With ehlers danlos syndrome its really probably time for a facelift actually.
You look great Doctor ! Honestly you really do. You are also a great example to everyone on how to take what life throws at us with positivity and a smile. I admire you.
Not to downplay what must have been a very difficult thing to come to terms to but you suit the no hair look so so so well, you have such incredible bone structure and you look ethereal!
Thank you for coming forward & sharing your experiences! Im also a young male experiencing hair loss, so you sharing this really helps me realize that I'm not the only one & means a lot. I'm still not sure exactly what I'm experiencing. I was born with a small, nickel sized bald spot on my left temple that was always just seen as a birth mark. Then almost a year ago seemingly out of nowhere, i developed a much larger bald spot (about an inch in diameter) right behind the one ive always had kinda behind my left ear. I had long hair & literally ALWAYS wore a beanie & one day I cut my hair low & noticed it then. It's grown maybe 10% in size since then like within the 1st 3 months. I have absolutely no idea where it came from. I have absolutely no other hair loss or thinning. My mom has an auto-immune disease (sarcoidosis) & I feel like I could as well. Still waiting to get a chest x-ray. I did have a crazy homeless guy break a beer bottle over my head not long before I noticed the bald spot, but I didn't even get a scratch from there as the hat & hair (afro) absorbed most of the force. I have heard that trauma can kill hair follicles, though. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I started going to the gym & working out very aggressively & taking creatine. I'm lost lol. So be glad you actually know what's going on with your hair! Lol.
Omg I never knew you had the dark full hair at one point. I understand it’s a medical condition but I actually feel like you look so distinguished with the new look!!
I'm so impressed by how calm and accepting you are of your condition. Personally, I think you look very handsome without hair but I know it's not how you're used to seeing yourself so it must take a healthy dose of adjusting to get used to it. But even here, back in 2020, you spoke about it so calmly and objectively. I'm not sure I could have done that. Anyway, I love your videos and your professionalism, and you totally rock the hairless look.
It is inspiring the way you seem to have successfully coped with your particular type of hair loss. I began to lose my hair at the age of 15 and so I wasn’t mature enough to comprehend life without hair. Thank you for sharing and for your fabulous content which I hope helps young people overcome this challenging and exposing topic. Best wishes

I had it in 7th grade on the back of my head. It was about the size of a 50 cent piece. I was made fun of, teased, bullied, etc. it was an absolute nightmare. However, I still consider myself very lucky because it eventually grew back and I never had an issue since, I’m 39 now. It’s amazing to see the people who have had this through out the years from professional athletes, millionaires, the guy down the street. The bullies and myself thought this was just something I had! I thought I was on an island and hated myself. Thank you for sharing Doc!
Thank you so much for sharing. I have 4 autoimmune diseases Lupus being the main one. I lose hair due to discoid lupus and it’s stressful for me mentally too. Hey Gary! I’ve just found your channel…….. I love this video, and that you are sharing your story of Alopecia Areata……. I have universalis and was an ICU RN, and lost my hair during my time working & struggled hugely. I think that your sharing is awesome! Also - I find it odd when people say this……. However, you totally suit the hair free / AU. Thanks for sharing your journey x

You look so cool as you are & I thought it was great to see your wife, part of your home & you both comfortably not showy. Thanks for sharing a part of your journey & life! You're awesome!!
I think you’re totally rocking the bald look 👍🏻 my husband, age 28, has started to get a receding hairline over 11 years ago. Because all four of his older brothers had lost a lot of their hair in their early twenties, he tried to prevent this with a medication he had to take everyday, starting with it when he was 15/16. Maybe his hair took a little bit longer to start to fall off or it wasn’t as rapidly as without it, but you couldn’t really see, that it really worked. So last year, when Covid hit, he decided to try to cut his hair a lot shorter, down to 6mm at the beginning, and now he is also shaving it. And it looks way better than his “longer” hair with the typical bald areas men get. Of course he would love to have all his hair back, sometimes he thinks, that I don’t find him attractive anymore, but for me that never mattered and also, seeing his brother’s hair loss always showed me what probably end up happening to his hair sooner than later. I can’t imagine how shocking it must have been for you, seeing your hair fall out more and more over time, and knowing that something you perform regularly on patients, a hair transplant, wouldn’t be an option for you. I also have an autoimmune disease since 2009. My body attacks my central nervous system and my bones in my lower extremities. So I pretty suddenly went from a healthy, extremely athletic teenager, to a pretty sick, not being able to walk or stand, wheelchair user. And in the beginning it was devastating, but you learn to accept the new challenges and to see the positive, although it sometimes can be quite difficult to find those. I’m sure you feel the same way, because you seem to be a pretty positive guy and you can totally laugh about some of the comments you get.
I love the fact that you can personally attest and identify with the journey that each of us with hair lost experience. Thank you for sharing and I hope one day to be able to visit you practice.
I have alopecia for four years and I have been a skinhead since and it has progressed to my eyebrows as well, I think you still rocks and looks great. ❤️
Thank you so very much for sharing your journey. I shaved my head last Fall. My hair hasn't completely fallen out. I have patches here and there that grow v-e-r-y slowly. I don't want to walk around with patches, and was tired of wigs, so I finally got the courage to shave it. Like you, I have almost no eyebrows. But, oddly, my lashes are full. I have no leg or arm hair. All the hair on my body just up and left. I'm a black woman, so I just say I'm one of the Dora Milaje from Wakanda.😀 Enough rambling. Thanks again for sharing. BTW, you have a soothing voice.
Thank you so much Dr. Gary for this video. I am 52 year old female, and lost my hair from the age of 3…..I had the steroid shots around age 5 or so, I did get some growth on the sides for awhile, but never a full head of hair. There were also UV treatments with some concoction that had to be rubbed onto my head prior to having the UV, and I remember they gave me headaches. Over time, I’ve lost my eyebrows eyelashes and body hair. I haven’t sought out treatment for this matter in a long time. I do notice that when I got two trigger point injections (again, steroid) some of my eyelashes came back for a visit but then fall out again. But I’m not confident that any long term steroid use is a good thing. I have accepted this as my life experience and self love has been a hard lesson learned. You are so encouraging and I wish there was more of this 40 years ago! Thanks again!!

Fascinating stuff. I developed an issue where I lost hair all over my scalp when I was 19 and it's so interesting to see a doctor dealing with a similar, at least in physical appearance, condition. No doctor knew what was wrong with mine!!

You look fabulous 😍
I lost all my hair last year during chemo. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. 💪
Hugs
My dad was bad, a hunk and Light Heavy-Weight Boxing Champion of Italy. If you are fit and have good bones, hair is over rated in my book.
I happen to find that look sexy. 🤷🏻♀️😎
JMHO.
@@lisac3002 I agree
Thank you!
i suffer from this, not as agressively, but for about 2 months now.
@@velhinho_91 100% ❤
I honestly thought you were shaving on purpose cause, man, you rock this look!
Still, it must be a difficult journey for you, so I give you a massive virtual hug.
Keep the wonderful work!
Kudos for the forthright sharing of your experience with alopecia areata. Your matter of fact presentation of its progression and the different treatments available is a healthy model for others to see and emulate. And, as many others have already stated, you wear "no hair" well!
Your mother must be proud. 😉
Thanks!
Man you have great energy. You also stay very positive. I want to be more like you for sure
As a fellow alopecia areata sufferer since age 17, I greatly appreciate this video. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely! More to come.
I appreciate how you react about your condition, because it's not easy and it takes a lot of courage to make such an endavour. Wish you the best
I like his look better with no hair! Incredibly unique look and he still has his confidence!
I've been bald since I was 21, and the worst phase is when it's straggly. Once you bite the bullet and shave your head, it immediately feels better. You look absolutely fine now. What matters is what goes on inside your head, not on it, so you're definitely ok.
I am having alopecia totalisis..started past 2012 with areta
No worries DR...a hair fall is not able to stop us
Keep going❤️
Amen to that!
Exactly! Thank you!
You are quite handsome with or without hair because of your face. Not everyone has that luck.
I know this doesn't change anything but you actually look great without hair, super handsome. Thank you for sharing your story!
Thanks for sharing!
Wish all doctors were like this guy. Most I’ve encountered think their gods. Thanks for posting
Very sorry to hear ,,,,,
You’re such an excellent surgeon and helping a lot of patients satisfaction !
Thank you! It’s a humbling experience no doubt.
thank you for being so open about this. I'm sure you're helping so many people who are dealing with this.
This guy's openness & authenticity is great. And he explains everything so well. Very cool, it's not something you get alot of these days.
Seems like you're maintaining a good attitude through it all which is inspiring from my perspective. 💪
Thank you!
Totally agree. Just wanted to write it, it suits you much.
@@drgarylinkov get jacked not thin!
not a "feelings repair warrior" - good term for rescuers :))
I also have alopecia areata. I love that you shared this with us!
Very professional and interesting educational video. Helps to show the journey so it’s not so scary for the others going through it
I can only imagine how difficult it is to come to terms with this kind of condition - especially considering your profession, Dr.
I empathise with this but I can also tell that you have dealt with it in a healthy and inspiring way.
And you're as handsome as ever.
I’m so sorry for any pain and suffering you may have gone through, but I must say, you look amazing now, transformed into a new you. Blessings to you.
Oh, wow. You are handling your health conditions with so much grace and dignity. You don’t let it hold you back. You don’t whine and complain. You’re an inspiration!
I feel like him working in the medical field helps. I find this to be a pattern with those who are unwell and work in medicine.
you look amazing bald. i prefer even more than your photos with hair. thanks for sharing your journey. glad to hear you’re doing good!
Appreciate that!
Love the way how she is helping him to apply the solution!!
God bless both of you.
Dr. Gary, you look dashing in this look🤟
My pleasure! Thanks for your support.
You still look good. Stay positive!
Hope none of your health issues interfere with your work.
Best wishes 🙏💗
I don't know how
I got here but I'm glad
I found your channel! Your beautiful spirit comes through the screen. Your wife is lucky!!
Amazing how you stay positive and find ways to handle the problem especially in the aesthetic discipline that you are in. Inspirational and strong.
I really appreciate you doing this video. I have had alopecia for nearly 20 years. Congrats on your professional success and your nearly 15K subs!
Well done Dr Gary. You’re a testament to the ability to adapt and thrive no
matter what life throws our way.
💙 I’ve never felt so comfortable with a doctor and listening to them. Nothing but love your way Gary 🤝
Best wishes
So inspirational for the many people who hide this condition. You look amazing
This is only my third Dr. Gary video, and am now wayyy impressed on the openness on he discussing his journey. His uber-confidence level is off the charts. Much success to the good doctor.
Gorgeous WITHOUT hair! My Hubby and I find your videos so informative. Thank You for being transparent. Your demeanor is so “welcoming” and kind. We are so pleased to have met you (and your Wife) through your channel. We subscribed and look forward to learning from You. 👍🏾
I have inflammation in joints, rashes everywhere and taking 17 prescription meds including few immunosuppressant.
I’m thankful for you sharing your journey And your knowledge and experience for awareness. Thank you!!!
High respect. Your entire demeanor and countenance are amazing and beautiful. Good luck with all the treatments. 🙏🏻
Also you are incredible in how you embrace and SHARE your situation. As long as you are healthy and happy is all that truly matters.
You're such a warm-hearted doctor that the condition can easily been ignored. a Warm-hearted, professional and good looking person. Thanks for your videos! 🙂😍
thank you for sharing your own journey. This is so meaningful to help people coping with a variety of issues.
Has anything helped you with your alopecia?
I admire how you handle that....that gives confidence and strength to others, suffering from Alopecia
I'm a black woman, so I just say I'm one of the Dora Milaje from Wakanda.😀
Enough rambling.
My daughter has alopecia totalis, I hope the world would treat her nice just like you guys!
I had never seen you with hair! You rock the bald head, looks so good. I’m sorry you went through this. ❤
Proud of you! Thanks for being courageous and honest.
I have a friend that has Alopecia Areata. He is the first person I've ever known with it. I saw your page and it is INSANE how much you both look a like. From facial bone structure, eye shape, and nose. It's so nice you posted your journey and so much information. Now I'm able to learn more about him and definitely wouldn't change a thing about him. Thank you for sharing. Love your content. ❤
I think it's great that you shared this video because I'm sure there is someone out there experiencing and going through the exact same thing! Your video may brighten their day & give them hope! I think it took courage for you to do the video, but kudos to you! Hair doesn't make a person and you look great bald! I also bet you're a more compassionate plastic surgeon for it!!
You have been very Brave to share this experience with us. Prayers that you obtain the the safest methods of treatment.
Fascinating stuff. I developed an issue where I lost hair all over my scalp when I was 19 and it's so interesting to see a doctor dealing with a similar, at least in physical appearance, condition. No doctor knew what was wrong with mine!!
You are such a nice person, as a doctor, sharing your personal struggle, it's not ver common. Lost if respect, doc. Love you!
My late father had experienced this and one of my seven brothers. That brother's hair returned on the area in which the patch fell off.. My father's as well...though his hair had thinned just a bit.. You still look *amazingly handsome.* Best Wishes ...
you are not different...we love you for who you are and love the way you look...coz everyone is beautiful in his own way...respect for what you are doing for us♥️♥️♥️
Thank you for this video it was so validating hearing about someone else cope with telogen effluvium and alopecia at the same time. Also hearing that you’re married. I’ve been feeling like I’m less desirable. Thank you again
I've been watching his more latest video. I didn't knew it was autoimmune, thought it was just his style. It just looks so good and natural on him 😊
