- Welcome back to Auto Scholar with Mr. B!
On this 2007 Volkswagen Passat B6 we had an air conditioner cooling problem. Turns out the problem was actually with the outside temperature sensor circuit. In this video, I show you how to diagnose the problem, including wiring diagram and connections. Be sure to watch the end so you know how the sensor is calibrated because it makes all the difference in the repair.
I apologize for my camera having a few focus issues throughout, I am working on a fix or working on finding a cameraman!
Let me know if this fixed your issue!
Good video. May I recommend seeing the disconnection, installation and the dashboard views. Us amateurs need to see and then follow.
I understand, thanks for the input. I will consider this with my future videos.
Honestly this video is significantly more informative than anything else on the subject save for maybe the Bentley Repair Book itself. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you! 100% working on my B8 Passat - 2015
Hey that is great! Thanks for watching.
Ok Mr. B. Here is my issue. 2015 VW Jetta. Changed the temp sensor. Hooked up my snap on solus or modis that a friend let me use. And I still can’t get the A/C to work. The temp sensor is getting a reading so know it is good. And I have voltage to plug. My question is there a way to fix the cluster if the issue is there? The VW dealer is on back order with no time frame on arrival of the clusters. Thanks for all the good work.
Nice video, thank you. A couple questions, if I may: A) Does the need for a half hour or so calibration apply to most car brands?
B) I am also getting those crazy temp readings and error codes for that sensor. I tested the resistance of the sensor and it is within spec (2.7-2.9 KOhm); when I probe the two car wires, without the sensor installed, it shows 5V on one wire and nothing on the other, but when I back probe the same wires with the sensor installed, it shows 5V on both wires - from what you said that is not right, in that there should be at least some voltage drop. How can there be normal resistance and the same voltage on both wires- is this confirmation that the sensor is bad, despite having normal resistance? The temp reading is clearly wrong (185F).
Thanks again,
did that fix the ac problem? after reading correct ambient temperature did it sent signal for ac to start?
Yes! Worked properly after that.
thanks for the video very useful
@@VAYALAD10 thanks for watching my friend!
Hi. I get on both wires 5v. It is normal? The sensor is not plugged when I tested
Have a 2012 beetle with outside ambient temp codes. Car had front bumper replaced. So I thought it would be mounted on lower driver side but instead found it on top by radiator. So I found one wire had 12v and other ground to sensor. So do you think I have a bad cluster?
Not sure, your system is probably different
Hello Mr. B and the rest of youtube, My T5 2.5TDI radiator fan keeps blowing full speed as soon as you turn on the ignition. Gave the 00779 code, and 5697 code(airco module). Changed the outside temp sensor, let it idle, no luck. The plug tests about 5volts, both sensors (old and new)are arround the 900ohm, close to yours. Checked the wiringharnas behind the bumper and tests are showing its fine. What else could it be? Fan Control module maybe? Or could the airco module produce this problem?
Very well could be the fan module sticking.
@AutoScholarwithMrB I have the same issue, changed the fan and the sensor, but I noticed voltage is only 3.2 V and when I turn my lights on temp shown goes down and voltage is only 0.7V . Could it be a cluster Isue as my gas Guage stopped working? Any thoughts anyone?
Good video, thanks for that. A bad outside temperature sensor can cause, that the electric auxiliary fan not turning on when ac is on? Give direct 12v to the fan, it is spinning. VCDS says, there is a fault code, Outside Air Temperature sensor (G17) is "open or shorted" or something similar. The temprature on the instrument and on the climatronic is looks valid. Or maybe cause the problem a broken fuse or relay? Thanks a lot!
I do not believe the fan would be related. If the a/c is cold, that would indicate the compressor is working. A bad temp sender for the instrument panel would not allow the compressor to come on. I would check fuses/relays and go from there.
@@AutoScholarwithMrBYou were right. There is an orange coloured 40A 32v fuse under the steering wheel. That cause the problem. Thanks a lot!
Thanks you for your video, i buy a 2004 Passat and AC its no blowing cold Air,. I'm just find out the outside temperature sensor it's missing, and Wires are hanging,,.. thanks 🙏
When I turn on my car the wiring to the sensor is showing 5 V but then goes down to about 0.2V. Does that mean that the cable has been damaged?
Nice video thankyou. I have the same error on my passat b5 2000
I changed the sensor but climatronic shows the accurate temp. but the ins trument cluster doesnt. My technician did nt find the broken wire (or short to ground) from the cluster to climatronic junction. Could you help me the procedure to solve the problem. Regards...
Could be the instrument cluster itself. Sorry to hear you are having problems.
I was hoping you were gonna show if you're not getting the 5 V from the instrument cluster
Hello mr B, i have a problem with passat b6 2008,1.9 tdi
Driver side heating good, other side(right complete) cooling.
Hlep if you can.
Greetings from Slovenia
Really helpful video thanks
Thanks for watching!
Good day, hope you are well. I hope you can help me, we drive a VW Passat 2007 model 2.0. We never had problems with our car until a year ago. Our AC stopped working. We found your video and realised that we have the same problem as the one you fixed on the video. Before the AC broke the reading was there but totally wrong, when the AC broke the reading disappeared totally. We bought a new sensor and replaced it and we also checked the power and all seems fine. The temperature is back on the cluster but the AC is still not working. We did the 30minute drive but no luck. The car AC was vacuumed and it was filled with gas again. Any idea on what else to check? We also replaced the pressure switch on the AC pipe.
Could be a bad compressor, that is a pretty common issue. You would need to see the gauge readings.
Is there a way to see if the compressor is working correctly without the diagnostic? We did by passed the system when the AC stopped working. The AC started working but a few minutes later the safety valve on the compressor popped and some gas came out. We switched the car of immediately and the gas stopped coming out. That is when we took the car for the vacuum and re-full on the AC.
@@abigailodendaal6811 you would have to have the gauge readings. Sounds like either the high side was restricted or the car was overcharged.
Thank you. I will have a look at that. Your help is appreciated sincerely.
@@abigailodendaal6811 no problem, Abigail, thanks for watching!
Hello! My car has 5v signal, I’ve replaced the sensor that was crazy, and ran the car for 30 minutes, but the sensor keeps reading -6°C, what can be it?
Engine oil temperature, inside and coolant all measuring like they should.
May be the temperature input in the instrument cluster that has failed unfortunately, or a break in the signal wire to the cluster.
@@AutoScholarwithMrB Can be, but the strange thing is that if I remove the sensor it reads - - - and when I install it it reads -6°C
If I take the sensor out the engine fans start spinning non-stop.
Could still be related to the cluster?
Is it possible the new sensor is faulty?
@@AutoScholarwithMrB Could be, I’ll try another sensor, I’ll feedback if it fixes the issue.
I changed mine & it still wont work? Could there be any other problem to why it wouldnt work?
Had the problem . Fitted the new sensor but it hasn't cleared.
heyo,
gotta 08 jetta, my ambient temp sensor was hanging under the car and they plugged it back in. not sure what the code was, they didnt tell me. weird thing happened before i took my car into the shop. I went to a car wash, i drove onto the track and put it in neutral, when the water started washing the front of the car, i got the temp reading back for a good couple seconds, enough for me to put the car back in drive and back in neutral. so the error with the three dashes reappeared when the car wash machine started heading towards the back of the vehicle. the difference in the reading vs real temp was about 9 degrees off.
they informed me that itll be a fix worth a couple hundred dollars. which i dont want to do if i dont really need it bc i dont have the money right now. not to mention that i also need a fkn water pump to do. and need money for that. anyway, is fix truly this needed?
As long as the A/C is working I wouldn’t worry about it
@@AutoScholarwithMrB well funny thing about that lol, my ac only works on the 4th setting.
@ISTHIStheKRUSTYKRABx that’s the blower motor resistor, it has failed.
@@AutoScholarwithMrB is it safe to say at this point, just get a new car? its running on 171k+ miles
@@ISTHIStheKRUSTYKRABx if the drivetrain is okay, I’d keep it.
I hit a bump and snapped the wiring connection to this sensor. I believe the sensor is still good I just have to reconnect the wire and I don't know where that wire goes. It's just u st dangling at the bottom
Hello, I have such a problem, maybe you can help me. On the WV PASSATZE B6, the water fan rotates only at one speed and forces water into the plug. I changed the fan, the water temperature sensor and the engine computer. I was at the Volkswagen center, unfortunately no one could hear anything. Has anyone had such a case? Thanks in advance !
HI
I GOT 4.6 VOLTS ON MY VW RABBIT 2007 2.5L , LES THAN 5V AFFECTS FROM CLUSTER ?
That should be enough voltage
@@AutoScholarwithMrB thanks for replying , got the ac presure sensor code in scan , I gonna replace it and see if the outside temp works on cluster
I replaced the sensor
I even rewired the hub
I tested the old sensor and it was reading low resistance.
My ambient temperature is still reading low
I don’t know what else to do. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Hey my Ambient temp sensor reading correct value and also displaying on dash, but im getting a code that compressor shutoff due to outside temperature too low and compressor is not engaging mine is skoda Octavia 2012... It doesn't have automatic climate control
Does the code come back when deleted?
@@AutoScholarwithMrB its not a code actually... I was seeing live data in my scanner and in live data in compressor shutoff conditions.. I saw that compressor is shutoff due to outside airtemp too low... But on my dash its displaying 32°C
@@dieselhead5891 I would look at the wiring going into the module for ambient temperature sense. Unfortunately I don’t have access to diagrams for Škoda.
@@AutoScholarwithMrB ok... Does it have any cabin temperature sensor?
I’m sure it does but anything off with that would set a code normally
Was the problem fix? you never confirmed in the video if that fixed the problem or not?
Hey my car isn't showing in the display the temperature anymore, so I've tried to change the sensor but it still not working 😕. Maybe it could be the wires?
It may be, or an issue with the cluster
@@AutoScholarwithMrB on Saturday the car was showing some crazy temperatures, like - 12° and it was around 6° outside, and today just stopped showing the temperature and I had to use that easy start for the engine starts the first time
@@Thiago-xz6zp that’s strange. Is it setting any codes?
@@AutoScholarwithMrB no it's not showing any error, could it have something related with the coolant temperature sensor?
@@Thiago-xz6zp if the car is running poorly yes, but if the cluster isn’t showing the outside temperature, it isn’t related to that issue.
Sneaky sensors
Replaced sensor. It was good (as well with the old one) first 12 mins good readings, than started to fail again.
Shows 10-15°C less. Sometimes runs like mad into -30°C and outside is 30+.
Any hints perhaps?
Wiring, connectors...something?
I was on ECU computer and service at authorised VW service and they said: Everything is ok with your Golf MK5, everything is tip-top state and your AC is working fine as well as outside temp sensors 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻😂😂😂😂
They billed me ofcourse, but they didnt do nothing! 😂
They ensure me that its working 😂
And I am looking dash reading 10°C, AC not cooling at all, outside is hell approx 35°C 🤦🏻
Asked them whos crazy me or you folks, look at this, did you even touched that car or what?
Solved nothing...
(AC was serviced, not leaking, fresh oil/gas into the system).
Desperate.
I will never buy VW again! Never ever!
I would rather ride with romobile.
P.S.
Bought brand new small city VW UP!
Water system cooling expansion tank blew like bomb on car with 1000km!!
They replaced because its brand new with warranty, BUT!! Hows that possible with a new car??
