  • I love Using pigs to clear land. It saves time, money, and you get lots of bacon! If you don't love bacon, I'm sorry, you should get that checked out by a doctor. For those of you that love pork, get yourself some pigs and clear that overgrown area you've been talking about taking care of for years.

    The before and after showing how much the pigs are able to do in helping to restore the land to be more accessible and usable. Seems like you are doing a great deal in trying to make Farming turn into a successful venture as you create a thriving homestead. Keep up the good work.

    I have got to say this is literally my favorite channel to watch, I have watched every single video and its been amazing to see the property and ya'll progress. I hope that one day I can save enough to get into homesteading and self sufficiency. Nice UTV as well that will help a ton around the homestead!!

    You don't like my Nana. She used to use pigs back in the old days to get rid of poison ivy/ poison Sumac on the hillside. Crazy how the old ways are coming back.

    Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents which host ticks. Rodents attract pit vipers, Bobcats and Coyotes. Screech Owls have a 90% diet overlap with Copperhead snakes and more than 60% with Timber Rattlesnakes. Given modern forestry practices there are not enough nesting cavities for Screech Owls.
    Watch Missouri Agroforestry videos by Coggeshall. He has a three part video of his favorite Silvopasture tree the Swamp White Oak.
    To focus your pigs efforts on eliminating Briars, go out on your first Crop Insurance Planting day and toss Turnip seeds into the sticker bed. Sixty days later soak corn in water overnight and lead the pigs to the Turnip patch and let them watch you throw this corn into the Briar patch. Pigs enjoy Turnip greens, bulbs and corn. They will root up the Briars and chews the sweet juice out of the roots leaving cleared fluffy soil ready for planting.

    This is awesome. I hope to do this one day. Got a 6 acre piece of land. How are they with wet ground? I imagine they would make a mess? Not a problem for me as long as it’s not unhealthy for them

    It seems like they even eat or destroy the plants that the books say are poisonous. Do they remove the horsenettle and cocklebur?

    Nowadays it's a good idea to move out from big cities.....at least the fresh air and the silence are treasures...of course your difficulties will not be over when you move into countryside, but I think prons are much more😊😊😊😊😊😊

    When the brush is so thick like that, how do you run the electric wire through to set it up to begin with? Thanks!

  • @shellyburman6862

    Zach I have a question for you about your pigs. I have the same breed and despite my best efforts of running two string hot wire they are always getting out. How do you handle that? I would appreciate any tips.

    • @ThePasturedHomestead
      @ThePasturedHomestead  2 месяца назад +1

      Put them back in a pen made of cattle panels or woven wire fence. Then run the wire around the outside, then move that wire in further and further overtime. If you have any pigs still getting out after that, it might be time to get new pigs. We train our piglets from a couple weeks old to one single strand, so we haven’t really had any issue with pigs that consistently want to get out

      I have seen no coyotes since I got pigs. I have seen my pigs play tug of war with a snake. After they reach a month or two in age, I would be more afraid for the predators.
