They didn't end up on a bad note. It took McGowan 2 years to write the ending, and you spoke through it. They're a few short simple words that are magnificent poetry one feels in the heart. I kept 'em with me babe I put them with my own Can't make it all alone I built my dreams around you. You're welcome.
I feel like it's the perfect Christmas song - bleak, dark, and maybe, just a little bit hopeful. I listen dozens of times every Christmas, and cry most of those time. Shane is such a brilliant lyricist, and I've never felt like the Pogues got the recognition they deserved.
This classic rings very true for so many people, myself included. Relationships are not always easy and harsh words can be said but when the darkest times come you can be reminded of the foundations of love. Where the woman felt her dreams had been stolen, her partner explained that they weren't lost but shared and he kept them safe and held them close to himself; he built his dreams around hers--even if the fates had not been kind enough to allow those dreams to be fulfilled. I think sometimes the more you love and rely on someone the harder you both have to try to hurt each other, hence the exchange of insults here. If they didn't truly care they wouldn't bother but just walk away. Some relationships seem to sail along on a millpond smooth ocean, others are driven along by a series of explosions followed by 'making up' but always enduring and promising next time it will be different, "Maybe this will be our year". Note that although the man is portrayed as a drunk, it is his partner who is the junkie: "You're an old slut on junk Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed", so neither party is exactly a model citizen. Still, maybe next year...
Shane McGowan is such a legend that Bob Dylan looked him up when in Shane's hometown and talked about songwriting, esp. this song. Tells you all you need to know about Shane's talent. And his drinking is the stuff of legends. Merry Christmas!
Yes, but if you haven't seen the video version, then most people ( as Harri did here ) would not have been particularly hopeful about their relationship just by the lyrics content .. It's an interesting difference between the 2 versions.
There is no resolution and the listener is questioning what happens next.... and I love that. The music has a sense of hope, romance, truth and beauty. The Question is sometimes more important than the Answer, which only the listener can maybe give. ....dam, I'm full of Xmas spirits, so forgive my meanderings .. and Merry Christmas.
Well done you for doing this on Christmas day when I'm sure you've got many things to do with your family, so I hope you manage to have a good one. This marvellous and iconic song tells it how it is for many young star-crossed lovers once alcohol gets involved. The curses aren't real, there's real love in their hearts for each other. We're all human and we make mistakes and both of them understand that as we see from the official video at the end, where Shane and Kirsty are dancing with each other. A work of musical art, absolutely.
Yes, the video does make it seem like they do indeed still love and care for each other .. But if we don't see the video, the lyrics themselves don't really indicate that this is the case .. I took them the same way as Harri did when he saw them, and felt there wasn't actually any happy ending there .. So it's interesting that the video gives us the hope for the couple that the lyrics don't seem to offer .. Wayne
I feel this is such a sad song, he's filled her head with dreams that never would come true. She gave up her home on the Emerald isle, so when the truth hit home, he wanted her still to believe in fairy tales. Best Christmas song ever! Happy Christmas Harri.❄☃️🎄👼🎅🤶
Great song, Harri ! .. Like you, I was hoping that despite their misgivings with each other, that their love would overcome it all and make them realise that they were actually happy together .. But such is the brutal reality of the story that we didn't get the payoff we were wanting .. It may be Christmas, but the truth is the truth for this couple .. Excellent reaction and analysis, my man .. Cheers, Wayne
You have read my mind again Harri I was just thinking I haven't heard this song this year yet To me (mu own interpretation) he has taken her across (from Ireland ? ) to New York to fulfil her dreams of being on Broadway But it didn't work out like that ! Nice one !
Heaven will have the best craic now. Shane and Kirsty singing this on his birthday coming up. God rest ye gentle Shane.. but we know ye won't be sitting still for long. 💔🥃. Nollaig Shone to you too and all!!
They were reflecting the fact that they both ended up on the street as junkies doing drugs etc. when things had started out so well with the dream of New York 💚☘️
This is a interesting song. I agree with your analysis of this song. They started out with high hopes. Sometimes life kicks you around a bit. It is a shame when a couple blames each other for failures.
Great song Harri ... I always took the first verse of the song to be the end. He finds himself in the drunk tank dreaming of her , the rest of the song outlining how their relationship began and ended.
I'm kinda ashamed the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special is what introduced me to this song. I'm American but after hearing this reaction I really should have known about it earlier. I am a bit confused as to why a song called Fairy Tale of New York is so popular in the UK. I know it's The Pogues and all but yeah... It is a great song and will definitely be in my Christmas music Playlist going forward.
Hi Harri! I'm on my way to watching Cheryl Barnes "Easy To Be Hard" but saw that you don't have "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses on your playlists, if I was reading right. That's a good one, if you want to check it out any time after Halloween. Lyric video would be good to catch all the words. Oh, and if you haven't seen the official video for Fairytale of NY, it's good, with a young Matt Dillon in the very beginning. RIP Kirsty.
Hi, I read the story just a wee bit different, (being Irish, i's sometimes being an eternal over optimist), drunk tank drunk, Y, Dreams of love, and fights, Yes, Dreams of talks and makeups, Yes. I know it's only a song, but i hope it all worked out with them, I Love this song, cheers,
I think she BLANES him for her dreams not coming true. But she is an addict and he's an alcoholic. Neither actually took anything from the other. They just never "made it". But he still loves her. And he still has some kind of hope for their future. Is there one? Who's to say?
I saw the Pogues live, once in 1990 -My brother saw them three times. Brilliant they have been -crazy, Punk, Celtic, peoetry. Shane is apparently barely functional, from all his years of alcohol abuse. Back even in 1990, fans and the Pogues pondered how long he'd live, or finish that concert. Kirsty MacColl, a true talent in her own right in music and voice. She died far to young - hit by a speedboat, swimming with her family in the ocean off Mexico. Aad, the NYC Police band plays "Galway Bay...each year.
Fantastic Song, One of My Favorites. So Sad, But Great . There's another song by the Dropkick Murphys that's similar called "The Seasons Upon Us" check it out if You've not heard it.
Maybe it's my age but this song is so depressing! It might have worked as a piece of prose written by Zola or one of the Russian writers but as a three minute song set at Christmas Time...No thanks!

I kept 'em with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I built my dreams around you.
You're welcome.
An All time Christmas Classic. RIP Kirsty MacCall and Shane McGowan
I'm from the US and this is the greatest Christmas song of all time.
I feel like it's the perfect Christmas song - bleak, dark, and maybe, just a little bit hopeful. I listen dozens of times every Christmas, and cry most of those time. Shane is such a brilliant lyricist, and I've never felt like the Pogues got the recognition they deserved.
This is hauntingly beautiful and but still makes me weep

I love this song. That deep Irish sorrow does make great Christmas songs.
RIP shane . a true legend ☘☘☘
They didn`t end up on a bad note. Look at the video, it shows them dancing together in the end, clearly still in love.

@@wayne_twentyfive Fair comment!
@@wayne_twentyfiveDid you not hear the end of the song?

Watch the official video, the end doesn't seem so bad with visuals, they are still together and slow dancing.
Genius. ❤
Nadolig Llawen (Merry Christmas) Harri from Wales. Wishing you much happiness for the New Year.
Than you for this Hari, I love The Pogues. Please consider their songs "Lorelei", "Sally MacLennan" and the gloriously strange "Fiesta".

Merry Christmas Harri. Love your appreciation of all great music across-the-board.
RIP Shane Mcgowan. Free from sorrow, pain and dreams for a better future, Into the dance and joy of the crucified and resurrected One.

I saw them live in Berlin in 1990 at a hockey rink. The acoustics were awful, and they were so drunk they could barely play their instruments.
Written and sung by Shane MC Gowan an Irish man 🍀🍀🍀💯💯💯👍👍

The Pogues are so much more than this song.

Lol. You didn't understand a single thing about the song.
Hilarious clueless opinion!
