The Pogues own this song. Theirs is the definitive version. They were an English Anglo -Irish Celtic rock band. The lead singer is Irishman Shane Mcgowan . The Pogues version has almost 85 million views on youtube and is the most popular Christmas song here in Ireland and also in UK. Shane Mcgowan has a unique voice that`s why he is so popular here. Mcgowan also co wrote the song. Thanks for the reaction. I liked and subbed.
Thanks Eliza! This is absolutely on my list of Christmas songs now! We start playing at Christmas every year after I heard it. Along with some other crazy Christmas songs :-)
RIP Shane & Kirsty! Gone but never forgotten! ❤ 💔 ❤.May you be dancing together in that pub forever! I'm Scottish with Irish heritage. Is Celts need to stick together 🍀
You should search for The ouge's cover of "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" . Plus search for anything on Shane McQuan (sp? ), lead singer and the prodominent song writer of The Pouges who was kicked out of school at 14 and never returned.
Well, yes, the choir didn't exist....but the NYPD Pipe and Drums are real and took part in the video, but as you say, they played 'The Mickey Mouse Club' tune which was then slowed down in the video to match the tune.
Forgot to mention that the lady with Shane in the video was Kirsty MacColl who was tragically killed when a boat hit her as she successfully pushed her son to safety on December 18 2000. Her father was the prolific singer songwriter Ewan MacColl who is very well known and loved this side of the pond!
Know the original pogues for years, really like the Giannini ans Sarah version, made it their own and nice black and white scene in the middle to acknowledge original, Sarah has a great voice, is that a NY accent she has? Definitely NE US I am guessing

Shane is Anglo-Irish - born in Pembury, Kent.
oh i hate this gianni and sarah version... sorry, its like street music on the next corner....
No worries
So do I, you could hear a truer interpretation in any Irish or Uk pub around Christmas.
"well so could anyone" The most Irish line in the song😁 Nothing like being cut down to size in a moment.
Yes! My mothers people were Irish going back many generations
Dourness is a staple
No comparison This song belongs to The Pogues
Oh man, Gianni and Sarah need to learn how to say Galway - rhymes with Paulway not Palway :)

The song is so adored in Ireland that the Irish attack anyone else singing it, with one or two exceptions.
