Here in the UK, Christmas is never Christmas until you hear this sonf playing somewhere. RIP Kirsty McColl who died in a terrible boating accident many years ago.
Sadly Shane MacGowan the founder and singer of the Pogues died on the 30th November 2023. I saw the Pogues in both Edinburgh and Glasgow in the mid 1980s. Probably the best two concerts I ever went to. An audience of folkies, Punks and the Irish community all dancing singing along with this and other Pogues songs. Shane was a punk poet who brought together different strands of music created something new and from there brought together different communities. May Shane and Kirsty sing this song together in Heaven now.
I saw them in Edinburgh and Glasgow too in the mid 80s, I was about 15 at the time and remember getting my pals big brother to get a couple of 1/2 bottles of buckie for us to drink before we went to see them. One of the best concerts I’ve ever been too.
Matt Dillon, Kevin is his brother:) This is played every Christmas in Ireland and Britain. The singer, Shane McGowan is famous for his drinking and former hellraising. The lady he's having the duet with, Kirsty McColl unfortunately was struck by a speed boat and killed in Mexico. If you watched The Wire, the song the cops sing in the bar is by The Pogues, they have a lot of great songs but you may need subtitles:)
This is mine favourite Christmas song and rate Britain’s favourite Christmas song also the most played Christmas song on the radio in uk and Ireland. Matt Dillon is the actor playing the policeman as Shane McGowan and Matt are good friends. Rip Kirsty
Whenever I hear this song at Christmas I always want to say a little prayer for Kirsty MacCpll who sadly lost her life in a tragic motor boat incident some years later.
I think I'd call it bittersweet rather than happy, but if you can't hear the lyrics clearly it would definitely be hard to tell. Another Pogues song I'm very fond of is the short but sweet Summer in Siam. Just a little thing, but perfectly formed. "It's summer in Siam, and the moon is full of rainbows..." Another great Irish artist you might like to check out is Van Morrison. He has a big catalogue, but for me, his masterwork is the Astral Weeks album. Listened to as whole it'll take you off into another dimension, roaming the streets of his hometown, Belfast with him, meeting some of the characters and sharing memories from his youth. If you only have time for one song, I would suggest you make it the title track, Astral Weeks. But, really, every song on this album is a thing of beauty. :-)
I saw the Pogues reunion tour in '08. I somehow got a ticket on short notice and got there early and stood near the stage. Mind-blowing for me, how great they were. I think Shane, the singer, is Ireland's best living songwriter. That I know of. I don't know why it was at a 1200-person theater. On a very different note, the Irish "shoegaze" band My Bloody Valentine also blew me away. Loudest of the hundreds of acts I've seen.
@@PhiliminizzyReactsI watched Shane's funeral service yesterday! It was held at Saint Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh. It was such a beautiful send off!!
I'm shattered that Shane McGowan was listed as being 5ft 9in tall as his demeanour would suit someone much taller, at about 6ft 3in, though his later performances reveal a slighter man.
So a masterpiece of Christmas song (sadly all year's the same shit on the radio; there are good and/or committed songs that would fit right now); typical Irish musical rock the Pogues, the unmistakably soaked lead voice, but also the fantastic Kristy MacColl. and that's what a central european said. I wish you all happy Christmas holidays and, above all, good music!!!
If they arent adult or mature minded enough to enjoy it or realise its a bit of humour then humbug, stick to twerking. No one tells me what is or isnt acceptable and w0ke means nothing to me, it has no place in my life.
I love this song, it's the best Christmas song ever, however the one thing that annoys me as a Scotsman is the lyric about the NYPD and showing their Pipe band, the pipe band is a Scottish Highland Pipe band, yet they claim to be Irish. As a Scot it pisses me off
I'm Scottish and has never bothered me about the pipe band. I know it's a Scottish pipe band but the Scots and Irish are both Celts. I have Irish ancestry too as a lot of Irish came to Scotland during the potato blight.
There's a line in one of the verses where the girl calls the guy a faggot. And because of that a lot of radio stations won't play the original. The song was made in 1987 when the word faggot was quite commonly used as a general insult.
Here in the UK, Christmas is never Christmas until you hear this sonf playing somewhere. RIP Kirsty McColl who died in a terrible boating accident many years ago.
RIP Shane. We luv you baby. Rest easy.
Rest in Peace Shane
Rip Shane died today. Cry everytime i hear this song x
Rest In Peace Shane MacGowan

This came out when I was 16 and has been my favourite Christmas song ever since. I'm Scottish with Irish ancestry. Us Celts need to stick together 🍀.

A masterpiece ❤❤❤❤

This song is practically the UK's national anthem
Whenever I hear this song at Christmas I always want to say a little prayer for Kirsty MacCpll who sadly lost her life in a tragic motor boat incident some years later.
The song is about the death of a dream where two people go to seek their fortune in America and it turns sour
I think I'd call it bittersweet rather than happy, but if you can't hear the lyrics clearly it would definitely be hard to tell. Another Pogues song I'm very fond of is the short but sweet Summer in Siam. Just a little thing, but perfectly formed.

His hometown is Belfast, 30 miles from me, he grew up on Hyndford street
@@aaronherbison7316 Thanks very much Aaron for the correction.

Somewhere on you tube you can watch a documemtry about the making of this song
Mc Gowan is a pure poet.
The lyrics are pretty essential in this song. Therefore often banned from radio.
The policeman was played by Mat Damon. You saw him in movies.
The singer Shane MacGowan just passed away on November 30, 2023. R.IP. Shane 🙏
Rest in Peace Shane McGowan..

Checkout The Pouges cover of 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.
Without a doubt the best version of it ever
The cop is Matt Dylan
it is officially christmas with this song.
I'm shattered that Shane McGowan was listed as being 5ft 9in tall as his demeanour would suit someone much taller, at about 6ft 3in, though his later performances reveal a slighter man.
Rest in Peace to Shane MCGowan
Matt Dillon was his name by the way

Policeman was Matt dillon. Shanes best man at hjs wedding was johnny depp. Great guy

Shane McGown passed away December 2023 😢 RIP 🙏
Rest In Peace Shane
Look up The Wolf Tones Irish band Play Grace true story about Uprising in 1916 Dublin 😢
Irish song at it's finest
The greatest Christmas song sadly being increasingly banned on radio stations in these woke times
due to use of language no longer deemed acceptable
If they arent adult or mature minded enough to enjoy it or realise its a bit of humour then humbug, stick to twerking. No one tells me what is or isnt acceptable and w0ke means nothing to me, it has no place in my life.

The song they are suppose to be singing is Irish. They aren't actually singing it, but to the story they are. It is a an Irish song after all
If you watch the documentary it explains the pipe band, apparently they were singing the Mickey Mouse song
I'm Scottish and has never bothered me about the pipe band. I know it's a Scottish pipe band but the Scots and Irish are both Celts. I have Irish ancestry too as a lot of Irish came to Scotland during the potato blight.
It's about the Irish immigration experience in America. It was not good.
Nice review but as a leeds lad lose the Man U shirt 😄
Not a movie soundtrack.
Policeman is matt dillon
I don’t think you got the lyrics if you think it was happy.
Body of the American is a great listen
What's wrong with the lyrics
There's a line in one of the verses where the girl calls the guy a faggot. And because of that a lot of radio stations won't play the original. The song was made in 1987 when the word faggot was quite commonly used as a general insult.
The man educated with London elite and prime ministers cos playing a working class Irish man , the plastic paddy 😂 , music was ok though.
Do shut up
