I remember Shane was once asked why he thought the song was so popular, he replied 'I dunno, maybe it's because it's not so irritating happy like other songs'. He got a point there.
RIP Shane & Kirsty! Gone but never forgotten! ❤💔❤. I was 16 when this came out and it has been my favourite Christmas song ever since. I'm Scottish with Irish ancestry. Us Celts need to stick together 🍀.
This manages to be cheerful and a bit sad at the same time, that's why I like it. The lyrics make it a good song to sneak in a Christmas playlist to see who notices.
Love the lyric "You took my dreams from me when I first found you." Love that Shane used the word "found" instead of "met" in that lyric. "...when I first found you..." just opens that line up to the sad state he must have been in.
RIP Kirsty MacColl, tragic story. I had the pleasure of meeting Shane MacGowan at a pub in Austin many moons ago. He was absolutely plastered, got cut off my the bar and put his hand through a window. It was a special night for all of us there at the pub, man is a legend, with the lifespan luck of Keith Richards. ❤️
Why am I suddenly getting people hearing the Pogues for the first time but believe me I am not complaining especially “Fairy Tale of New York” …. ☘️☘️☘️
Exactly 10 years ago (to this minute) my mom passed away! And this song played on the radio as my dad called me.....love this song ever since and cry Everytime I hear this!
@@tedaduffy Bout 25 yr in the States. Great city Dublin. Fly in and rent a car when im home. Heard the powers that be decided to get rid of the Irish in Ireland since ive been away 😂?
What’s crazy is that I haven’t heard this song at all this Christmas because I’m now working nights, but, fuck me, this is the greatest Christmas song ever…
In pubs in the UK and Ireland when he says 'i could have been someone ' the place will sing back 'well so could anyone.' This song is so sad but beautiful and honest. It's a year later but Happy Christmas! 🎄
With respect, and it's understandable, you didn't get the song. It didn't touch your soul. It's not for everyone. Maybe because you're a different generation or culture. I was very young when I first heard it and I just liked the music. I didn't really listen to the words. With maturity and having understood the words, I realised how poetic and beautiful they are. It's about an elderly couple remembering how they met but how they started drinking and doing drugs and their dreams shattered and now they hate each other but can't live without each other. It's very sad and the antithesis of the usual Christmas song. Shane McGowan, the singer, passed a couple of weeks ago. He's such an icon in the UK and Ireland that they broadcast his funeral on livestream TV. People were singing this and dancing in the streets of Dublin. The Pogues sang it in the church and Shane's wife and sister, amongst others, were up dancing. Johnny Depp was one of the casket bearers. Kirsty, the female singer, was killed in Mexico when a jetskier ran her over in a swimming zone. So this makes the song more poignant for us. Now Shane is gone the song is an elegy for them both. I just wanted to tell you this. Thank you if you're reading it. RIP Kirsty and Shane, we love you.
Love Shane’s songwriting- his songs seem like they always existed and were just waiting for someone to channel them and scribble them down on whatever’s near at hand. Love the lines, “ I could’ve been someone, well so could anyone.” He can barely speak in the interviews I’ve seen, but I’ve seen him perform twice, once w the Pogues, and once w the Popes and he was amazing both times. He came out on stage w 4 beers held against his chest w one arm and a pint of Guiness in his other hand. He came out on stage and slurred into the mic, “New York, Fu**ing great town.” Then the band opened w “If I Should Fall From Grace…” and he nailed every line which I couldn’t do sober. At one point in the show, someone threw a grey hoodie sweatshirt towards the stage snd it landed right over his head. He didn’t pause and just kept singing Thousands Are Sailing… and he left it over his head for two more songs, only removing it when the band started playing an instrumental and he needed to go backstage to grab a few more beers. Don’t know how he does it; but he pulls it off somehow and manages to write some great and timeless songs.
Wonderful! He was such a great songwriter, and it surprised me that he was laconic in interviews. I got the impression he wasn't remotely interested in talking about himself. RIP Shane and Kirsty.
This song surpasses the jingle bell tunes and drags up the sadness and love lost as Christmas approaches..to be lonely and drunk, without friends, at that time when you reflect and wish for better times. Loves lost..and hoping to make things right. God bless you Kirsty McColl and Shane McGowan..rest in peace. You left a signature.
Shane is a musical genius, he wrote every piece of music for all the instruments. He’s a tortured genius but a genius none the less. I love all his music from The Nips to Shane & The Popes. I’ve seen him so many times love and it’s always an experience.
Reaction to the person who said the Pogues were British Come on we got our freedom from Britain in 1922 You can claim the Pogues The name of the band alone is enough best wishes from Spain 🇪🇸
Pogue is indeed Gaelic for 'kiss'... but the phrase is "pogue mahomes"... well the latter word means 'my arse'. Peace from Canada- Merry Christmas Twon, be safe.
Heaven will have the best craic now - Shane and Kirsty singing together again. God rest ye gentle, Shane... but we know ye won't be sitting still for long 💔🥃. Nollaig Shone to you and all!! ⛄

They are Anglo-Irish. Shane was born and educated in England but his parents were Irish and he spent much of his childhood in Tipperary. Several other band members were from Irish families and others had Irish roots. The Irish will claim them for themselves and I won't argue with that. Some people say they're fake Irish and I would say there's nothing fake about the Pogues. It's not important, they are beloved on both sides of the Irish Sea. RIP Shane McGowan x
It's not Christmas in the UK and Ireland until you've heard this. It's our Christmas national anthem.
Or the US and the rest of the world.

Shane's spiritual home was Ireland 🇮🇪 his funeral was here, he spent his childhood here and he's a Celt to the bones. Pòg mo thoin

Irish punk always brings in the realism! It's fun in such a different way. LoL
Fav Christmas song ❤
Bob Dylan asked Shane how long it took to write Fairytale? Shane said “bout 10 mins”
I saw Bob play in Dublin last month, Shane was in the audience, Bob introduced him as "the legendary song writer Shane McGowan" the crowd went nuts

Best ever Christmas song even was banned from the BBC because of the record label, which translates to Kiss MY Arse records.
So what's wrong with that ??? LOL
