She died tragically young her kids were swimming and were nearly hit by a speed boat she pushed them out of the way saving them but sacrificed herself. Great mother imo
The operater of the boat was a multimillionaire (supermarket CEO) in Mexico. He got off with paying only a couple of thousand dollars restitution. Sadly money talks!
@@rocco... Actually it wasn't even near thousands of dollars...From what I have read that rich prick who mowed her down in her youth, in front of her children got a fine of about the equivalent of $25-$50 US dollars. Now that's evil.
The image of America promised so much to working class Irish immigrants... some thought, literally, there were streets paved in gold... MacGowan depicts a harder, poignant, colder reality for most who struggled and struggled after arriving. Fantastic song from one of the great lyricists.
@@georgebarnes8163 Jem wrote two versions of the song, neither of which became the final version. The first version had good lyrics but a bad concept, and the second had the great concept of the bickering couple (which his wife suggested), but bad lyrics. He gave both versions to Shane, who wrote the melody and, after the Pogues performed in NY, rewrote the lyrics into what we have today.
Probably the most honest Christmas song there is. Compares the romantic ideal of Christmas with what is often the sad reality of the day after too much booze. So the couple begin all romantic and end up in a drunken argument and regrets. Shane McGowan (vocalist) is a genius songwriter, if sadly badly impacted by years of substance abuse (his drunk sounding vocals is pretty much his usual singing voice). Other (non Christmas) songs of the Pogues you should try are A Pair of Brown Eyes, Summer in Siam, and A Rainy Night in Soho. Pogues, by the way, is an Irish word for kisses. They were originally called Pogues Mahone, but the BBC banned them when they realized that translated as Kiss My Arse 😀. Needless to say the BBC were probably concerned about their DJs broadcasting into Ireland imploring people to kiss their backsides.
Merry Christmas Kirsty, we miss you. The Pogues are phenomenal. So much to check out. Shane MacGowan is possibly the greatest song writer of the last 100 years. How he has survived being drunk 24/7 for the last 50 years is a medical mystery.
It's a real Christmas classic in the UK (we're suckers for some comedic insult swapping). Saw Kirsty singing it with them at one of their concerts before Kirsty died, and it was great.
The ultimate bar band-the Irish pub band. Such a great meld of traditional Irish, punk and rock. This is probably their most famous song but everything from Rum Sodomy and the Lash is pretty golden.
One of the great Christmas songs because it's so much more authentic in some ways, with the fighting and the tenderness. It's just so unique and different. I have Irish and Celtic roots, so this is right at home for me. The Pogues are kind of Irish rock + Celtic traditional music but with a twist of drunken punk, and it's a completely unique vibe compared to so much music out there. In any case, in my house, nearly every Christmas playlist has that on it. :)
Kirsty McColl herself has some great songs - A New England (cover of the Billy Bragg song), Days, In These Shoes, They Don’t Know. She was the daughter of Ewan McColl, a hugely influential trad folk singer, who also wrote some brilliant songs (including Grammy winner First Time Ever I Saw Your Face). Ewans second wife (and so Kirsty’s step mother) is Peggy Seeger (for whom he wrote First Time Ever) who is the sister of Pete Seeger, legendary American folk singer, songwriter and social activist. So she has a unique musical heritage and links to some of the most influential figures in folk music of the 20th century. Such a tragedy she died so young.
Heaven will have the best craic when Shane and Kirsty are singing this on his birthday coming up. God rest ye gentle, Shane... but we know ye won't be sitting still long. 💔🥃
The Pogues are an iconic Irish folk/rock band fronted by Shane McGowan and Kirsty McColl was a renowned folk singer (daughter of Ewan McColl). She was killed in a freak boating accident many years ago. This beautiful song tells a very human tale of two young lovers with stars in their eyes at Christmas in New York but who've had too much to drink, and start arguing, but it's only the drink talking when they argue with each other, their love shines through in the brilliantly written lyrics. This is a classic Christmas song. Lovely reaction!
I remember years ago when I just moved into a new apartment building, I met this nice Irish man, and a great artist...Anyway one day he was pissed drunk and he and I were sitting out on the front lawn singing this song at the top of our lungs...People were just walking by and giving us strange looks...We just kept on singing this song over and over, and over again...
It's a terrific song - Shane McGowan's raddled voice does its best to cover up what a beautiful melody it is, and the duet with the absolute wonderful Kirsty MacColl shouldn't work but does (beauty and the beast?). Kirsty was a *brilliant* singer and songwriter in her own right, and I heartily recommend checking her stuff out. A good place to start might be: Soho Square, Walking Down Madison, Free World, My Affair, Titanic Days, In These Shoes, or Autumngirlsoup.
Probably the most famous Christmas song in the Uk and Ireland. You're not doing Christmas right if you're not singing this at the top of your lungs with a bunch of strangers in a pub at 2am Christmas week.
Used to sing along to this with my Irish friends. It's still a favourite with my middle child (half Irish). Many good memories. Your reaction was almost exactly what I thought would be. Yes, it made me laugh the 1st time I heard it as well. Stay safe, Angela and Merry Christmas to you and yours 👍🏽 ⭐⭐⭐
I must say i did not realize so many Christmas songs i have not heard . I agree was a strangely enjoyable song ! Good song for Christmas road trip ! I thank you for showing me a wider range from just the classics i am used to ! 🎅
Geez I miss Kirsty. There was no one like her. One of my favorite Christmas songs. Thanks for the spin. I request The Weepies 'All That I Want' another fine Christmas song.
Classic. Was a huge Pogues fan back in the day. Might want to try Rainy Night in Soho. The Pogues, like a lot of other Celtic acts, played America's Irish Triangle - NYC, Chicago and Boston.
Great reaction probably my favourite Christmas song, Shane was drunk well always is when he sang this, Up until about 5 years ago on British radio stations they played the song as it is, But of course now they block what they call all the offensive words out. Like someone said Kirsty Tragically died saving her kids.
First thing to say. I love your vids. You are so bright and on top shockingly beautiful. That said. This song is lyrically great BUT is a masterpiece musically. Tremendous. The more I hear it the better I like it!
Not sure if the official video for the song was blocked, but it's really great. it's in black and white and Matt Dillon makes a cameo as a police officer.

At Christmas in any shopping centre, grocery store, train, bus or pub when this song gets played everyone starts singing. It’s not Christmas until this song is sung, it’s as regular as Santos.
The lead singer and writer Shane McCown was permanently kicked when he was around 14. The Pogues have many great songs. I suggest you look up their song "Dirty Old Town". It would be especially poplar in the US rustbelt if they heard it., A lot to relate to.

Would be a fun, interesting reaction of the song "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" by Tom Waits, taken from the Australian TV 1979 live video. It's another non-traditional Christmas song (obviously by the title).
