    Thank you for this. The idea that the sensation of self is a concept rather than an experience is interesting. I've been trying to locate this experience of selfness, but if it is a constructed concept rather than a raw experience to be found in consciousness, then it's simply a matter of noticing that the concept of self is just a concept. The experience is the totality of consciousness, and the self is the idea that there's me at the centre of it. Damn. Thank you again! I'll be watching your channel with interest!

      You're welcome ( again ;) ) I'm hoping to make all these refined meditation insights as accessible as possible. This should be able to become anyone who wants it main practice :) I think "ruclips.net/video/K56NB5vCFok/видео.html" and "ruclips.net/video/IJEyDlnvR_s/видео.html" Are both good follow ups from this video at the moment.

    Thank you for your contributions to reducing confusion over this concept. One thing I believe that is missing from the “look for the looker” instruction is context- in what sense are we supposed to? Those who haven’t had a moment of awakening could be confused, and believe it’s meant spiritually or as an instruction to imagine headlessness etc. When in fact it is an instruction to help you notice firsthand the reality of the subjective experience. To that end, I appreciate that you don’t attempt to assert that the subjective conscious experience is definitely the only reality that exists. So many get hung up parroting this assertion without understanding what it truly means.
    Again, thanks

      I 100% AGREE WITH YOU. And thank you for reiterating these crucial points about it being a first hand experience, and not a metaphysical claim!

    Nice video. I'm a fan of Sam, he's a great teacher of meditation I think. I've been using his app for months now and read his book Waking Up, so I feel comfortable with the idea of non-dualism, but some of the instructions in meditation sessions just make me go "???" Particularly this one, the "look for the looker" when the session is one in which you're instructed to keep your eyes open. Just hasn't exactly clicked with me so far.

      I'm on board with everything you've said here. The good thing is other instructions are just as sufficient for realising the same insight/ insights. I return to some meditation instructions more than others... (to be honest)... this one hardly ever haha. In case it might be of benefit this is another method I use ruclips.net/video/baqRgfJXLU0/видео.html&

      Omg you read my mind. It makes me hate Sam when the daily meditations start with “keep your eyes open” because I know this is coming. When he snaps his fingers and says turn attention on its self I lose all interest in the exercise and my mind just wonders. :(.

    Many thanks for this video. At first, it was hard to comprehend, but if one starts off with whether a looker is here or not, everyone can agree that seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting and thinking is happening? Once this is agreed then we need to investigate who or what is behind the seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting and thinking. One exercise is to ask the question, what is behind the experiencing, and just wait for an answer. If a thought, feeling or sensation arises, acknowledge it, but disregard it and carry on waiting for the answer. Something will happen with practise. This can be done whilst sitting, walking or doing the household chores.

    Very good videos! I always get a little bit confused though when saying that the self is an illusion and just thoughts. I feel like the self is more than "just" thoughts. It feels more like a deep pattern or a personality (like your personal taste in music as one part of your self and one example of something that is clearly not a "thought"), and they can differ radically from one brain/consciousness to another, perhaps a deep rooted pattern formed in the brain. I understand that if reaching a complete still state that all these patterns and personality could fade into the background for a temporary time, but I still dont understand how that makes the self an illusion. You still return to some sort primary self or personality that is there and waiting. I am not sure if I am explaining my confusion clearly. Maybe an analogy is being totally engrossed in a movie where your "self" disappears for a while and you are just "in the movie". But then after it ends you still return to your self (and not some "other" self of another person with another self). I dont see how being engrossed in a movie leads to the conclusion that the self is just an illusion either just because we lose all concept of our self for a while?

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  Год назад +3

      I think I see what you’re saying 😄 The reason why we would say it’s an illusion in meditation is because it seems to disappear when we pay more attention to our conscious experience. We find that actually, if we were to look more precisely, more often, we’d find the self is never actually there. It’s not looking and confusion that gives us the sense of self. So it’s like is there a self? No, not really, but yes I’m confused a lot of the time and it seems like there is one, a lot of the time; but if I were to look more carefully at anytime, no there is not a self to be found, so the self is sort of illusory.

    The perspective shift that visuals are in consciousness, and it is all my consciousness helped me so much. I feel like it’s a tenuous grasp I’m experiencing though, do you have any recommended resources?

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  3 года назад +2

      Hello and Yay! I'm glad that helped you. That was a big shift for me too. I'm interested in you're meditation background already, that might make some resources more accessible than others. There's a lot of good stuff out there. The Waking Up app (which can be free if you write in) talks about non-duality a lot and can be very accessible as Sam Harris won't ask you to adopt extra beliefs in order to meditate. In my experience the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of Dzogchen is the most precise and abundant in talking about and realising non-duality. It can be difficult to orient oneself amongst the content in the beginning, but in my opinion I think it's worthwhile because one probably wants to be amongst it eventually anyway, in the process of develop a solid practice. Fearless Simplicity by Tsoknyi Rinpoche may or may not be a steep introduction... but it's right in there with the practice haha. I probably wish I had started there, understood there concepts and built from there... :) But there's other great stuff too.

      @@SonamHoani thank you! I’ve meditated and learned about non duality for a few years now. Much like the original author I tend to end up very frustrated by some instructions from Sam Harris or Loch Kelly, even though I still very much appreciate the teachings. The teachings give me a lot of peace of mind, but I still feel separate from them as if I’m still thinking about them as concepts and not actually experiencing it. It’s like I’m acutely aware I’m still thinking about it. It’s helped me experience life more and be a better person, but as you said I still feel the sense of being separate often. Your explanation was so clear and well thought out, thank you!

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  3 года назад +1

      @@practicewithpatrick Thank you! Loch and Sam are both coming from a Tibetan Buddhist background. Sam's emphasis is Dzogchen and Loch's is Mahamudra. They become the same practice eventually but Mahamudra has a bit of a broader base to work with, it acknowledges how one feels dualistic in the beginning and leads into non-duality from there. Dzogchen is a bit more like "Nonduality NOW!" Haha. (At least in my experience.) So if you do start looking into some of the original context it should naturally provide some insight into where they're coming from. And then once you understand all the new words there is almost a never ending amount of writings and teachers about how to access non-duality as an experience. I will also continue to make videos on this stuff! And if you want a particular one! Just let me know :)! It definitely felt difficult to me to begin with too and I hope that I can speak specifically to others about the pieces that were missing for me in the instructions I've received because some of them were unnecessarily partial.

    When you say meditate more, do you have a specific type you recommend?

    • @SonamHoani
      @SonamHoani  3 года назад +3

      Yes! It's all good, but for promoting these particular realisations I personally think Mahamudra and Dzogchen are the best. They can take a little while to orient oneself amongst, what with them being an ancient tradition and all. But to me it's been a worthwhile investment because once one is oriented they have abundant and very specific instructions for accessing this insight! (I may need to make a video with reading recommendations) Hope this is useful!

      I don’t really know what you mean. Language can be used in many ways and using the word “you,” doesn’t necessarily negate “not two,” depending on the framing of the conversation and the level of understanding.

      Many of the spiritual traditions certainly value having a personal and genuine connection to a teacher. It’s not necessarily needed, but generally, one-on-one guidance is an effective way to make swift progress when learning anything :D
