    Good video, Charlie! You know what this means, right?! You need a PCB repair and test bench!!

      @overtimearcade  9 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks, Shawn! The Superman cabinet is pretty much serving as my PCB test bench right now, although I have thought about building a dedicated test setup with a small CRT monitor, switching power supply, JAMMA harness, controls, and a speaker!

  • @Arcadenut1

    Another good habit to get into is to test the resistance between ground and your +5V. If you get close to 0 Ohms (less than say 30 - 50 Ohms) then you probably have a short on the PCB and you shouldn't apply power unless you have a Bench Power supply with over current/over voltage protection. Make sure the PCB isn't hooked up to anything when you test this. Since that Tantalum cap smoked, it was probably shorted to ground (Test the PCB now if you haven't fixed it and see what you get). I usually test on a TTL chip since it's easy to get to the +5 and GND.

  • @Arcadenut1
    @Arcadenut1 8 месяцев назад

    Time for you to upgrade to a Test Bench with a Bench Power Supply. If I recall correctly, there are also 2 versions of Frogger, Sega and Konami. Sega needs external volume pot, Konami doesn't.

    One time I had a" Time Killers" that seemed dead, so I held down one of the action buttons, while doing a start up. Bingo,it booted right up. Unfortunately that's what kept it running. Bad ground ?,not sure .May try that on your GT bds. Also check voltages, some IT boards are finicky about that. Zaxxon does not use a suicide battery. Yes those little tant. caps will smoke! All by themselves. PU 😊

      Good point, I should double check the voltages at the PCB!

    Zaxxon HW has an interesting clock generator, looks similar to Donkey Kong HW with ECL and hand-wound transformer and (for the time) insane high clock speeds like 48 MHz, I'd check the video addressing generator (what generates the 1H...128H, 1V...128V). Ours had a bad ECL->TTL translator on the clock circuit, but I think I just got the standard no sync black screen.
    Our Future Spy just had a bad CPU socket.
    You can always put the unknown Frogger CPU board with the known good Frogger sound board.
    Frogger only has one sound chip. I don't know if the voice outputs are joined through capacitors (had a Bomb Jack that had very thin and lacking sound and 5 of the 9 caps were completely open and 3 were weak and only one was somewhere near spec), it's probably intentional that the music plays in the background with loud SFX in the foreground.
    EDIT: If you scope the ECL portion on the Future Spy, switch the probes to 10:1

    Are the World Class Bowling and the GT-2k boards the same? Maybe you Frankenstein the best GT board and swap the ROMs from WCB and see if that'll get past the test screen. You do have that new chip puller from Xmas! ;) If you get that chip programmer, you could also read out the ROMs and compare against the known good CRC/data values. Validate those chips. Thanks again!

      There's different versions/form-factors of the boards, but I think they're compatible-ish. I'll definitely be busy with some basic board work this year!

      @overtimearcade  9 месяцев назад

      Good thing I already ordered new amps! And you think a bad EPROM could cause quiet music? It was hard to hear on the video, but the music didn’t disappear entirely - it just went very quiet relative to the sound effects.

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  9 месяцев назад

      Oh wow, it was plugged into an original Frogger harness + volume pot and you were getting zero sound? Perhaps there's something loose on the board that got bumped back into place in shipping? The only thing I did to mess with it was reseat the ribbon cables, so maybe one of them is marginal? In any case, thanks for selling this to me at a great price!

      @@overtimearcade Would reflowing anything related to the audio be a starting place? Would a resistor exceeding its 1/4W rating make it turn to carbon, going from 1KOhm (or whatever it is) to 0 Ohms... leading to the volume change? Check the components in the region of the other Frogger🐸🔥fire. Always love watching Overtime Sparkade!!!

      @@slinger2112 LOLing at "Overtime Sparkade!" I haven't touched either board yet, but I'll be recapping the audio section and doing all of the basic PCB maintenance stuff too (reflow, etc.). I'm guessing low volume is more likely caused by bad caps or amps, rather than cold solder though. If the sound was cutting in & out, that would make me suspect cold solder.

    Hi Charlie. Love the channel. Have you ever considered looking into collecting 1990s arcade cabinets? I noticed you are a huge 80s arcade fan.
    I was wondering if you got newer arcade cabinets from the 90s if your kids would be more interested in playing them.
    Stuff like Neo Geo, Street Fighter, Daytona USA, etc.
    Imagine connecting two upright Daytona USA cabinets together and racing your kids.
    Just a thought. Have a nice day!

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  8 месяцев назад

      Hey, great question! I do own NBA Jam, Golden Tee ‘99, and Star Trek TNG pinball, which are all 90s games. I personally tend to prefer Golden Age games from the early 80s, and my kids mostly prefer modern console games. There are a few other 90s games that I’d like to have, like MKII and Rollergames pinball, but 90s PCBs and monitors tend to be more difficult to fix, and demand has caused prices on most 90s games to skyrocket! I’d be happy for a cheap Neo Geo project to fall into my lap, however!
