The more I listen to this slower interpretation the more it uncovers in this Etude. As first hearing this Etude can sound perverse. This rendering unveils its true beauty, especially the centre melody. Frederic would have applauded Valentina.
I've heard many recordings of this piece, many interpretations, mostly all similar to each other... but this! This is like hearing it again for the first time, what an interpretation! Brava!
The thing that i like most of your interpretation is that you maked sound the "wrong note" like a right note This etude is so full of sad at the beginning but then it becomes so happy it reminds me a river in spring with the flowers and the animals that woke up frome the winter
I love this etude. I heard Rubinstein play it live, and he played the grace notes in the first and second fingers as a soft murmur, with the melody in the fifth finger always soaring above. And the middle section was so soft and so gentle. It was played like a nocturne. I looked through his recordings of this etude, but I never found one like his live performance. This is a fine performance, but we are always aware it is an etude.
.. it is true that an anime brought me here .. but i stayed because she plays every piece so beautifully .. i am finding myself watching her videos the whole day doing nothing else .. well done!
Yeah, I think some classical fans have the tendency to get uptight over minor things. There's another video of hers I'm a big fan of, I first found after watching nodame cantabile. Check out her Rachmaninoff concerto no 2 mov 1 minus orchestra. Really impressive, powerful piece and was rather interesting to hear the piano alone.
This is beautiful! It's funny that most of the haters are here because of an interpretation that they heard on an anime, like they'd know the difference. It's natural to be drawn to what we are exposed to first, but maturity brings the enjoyment of opening yourself to other artistic variations and interpretations. (in other words, grow up and then come back and listen to it). There are a lot of different sunsets that are beautiful, but they're all still sunsets. Enjoy it!
tgp7201 This piece might be used in a anime but the pianist interpreting it is REAL. Tomoki Sakata is a very talented pianist and I enjoy his interpretation way more than this one. Honestly I can’t even listen to her, whatever piece she’s playing. That’s just an opinion.
Don’t tell people to grow up when they have an opinion on which interpretation they prefer. Just because it came from an anime doesn’t mean it wasn’t played by a professional. The piano piece were played by Tomoki Sakata who is a professional Japanese pianist. Though I don’t think this interpretation is bad it is definitely my least favorite. The harshness on the “wrong notes” creates a piecing sound. When transitioning from the A to B sections she pounds really hard on the keys which I also didn’t enjoy. Then on the B section it sounded very choppy and rushed. I usually love Valentina’s performance and though she went for something a little more unique I didn’t personally like it. Just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean I’m going to tell you to grow up. It’s difference of opinions. If you open yourself to different variations then you will have favorites and least favorites. Just because people found the piece through an anime doesn’t mean they cannot interpret music. All music has emotion and value. Classical is not the end all be all of interpretation and variation. (In other words let people have a opinion. If you don’t share that opinion move along and there is no need to insult them)
I can't believe a human being wrote this. It completely blows my mind everytime.i hear it. The middle section has such a potent beauty it hits me with such a complex introspective and philosophical nostalgia.
Me neither, but I found this interpretation very enjoyable. This is an "edgy" etude that I also like when played more capriciously, but I think there's validity in a "kinder gentler" approach that Valentina takes here. Usually, she takes fast tempos.
Yes it is a different interpretation from other pianist. As she make those “wrong notes” sharper and be easier to be heard, which sounds like more wrong
Such an incredible interpretation. The beginning E Minor section sounds absolutely blackened with sorrow and while the E Major section does lighten up a bit it still seems like there is a bit of sadness that just can’t be shaken off which is quite interesting if compared to say Horowitz’s rendition which has a bright and shining B section. Wonderful.
I converted this piece into orchestral version it sounds really awesome and she played really very emotional everyone play like robots most of the recording were like no emotions in it but the way she handle the piece it was totally amazing only few can understand what I'm saying... While others watch the anime and complain this version.. Music needs emotion even if you're playing simple version it must sound emotional and she totally played it exactly how I wish... :)
You play this music more like a Nocturne, start slowly and quietly, your interpretation make a new music basically, thats what i most like in Classical Music, if you be an slave of the sheet you cant reach your best, and you cant be you in the music. Your way to play is awesome, everyone is talking "so slowly", "whats that final?" And things like that, but thats your way to play, continue awesome please( sorry for bad english).
I love this etude, and played it in college, but you're right, you hardly ever hear it. It's such an unusual piano configuration - the middle section is heaven on earth.
I personally think Valentina's interpretation versus the faster one simply comes down to my mood. Valentinas interpretation is more intrepid, calm, and has a bit of mystery to it while the faster version has a trembling feeling and feels like a child. I love both interpretations in their own way.
I admired the lightness of your left hand. Many pianists play Op25-5 in Vivace, but I think your tempo is best appropriate for perfomance of this tune.
OMG, how wonderfull! Very natural! Thank you so much Valentina for your outstanding presentations using RUclips! The more you play the more you make the world happy! I wonder why you abstain sometimes from a little rubato. It would cause my tears trickle with spouts.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso . También me trajo aca hermosa melodía nunca la había escuchado algo como esto Le recomiendo la serie a todo el que lee estos comentarios sin duda la mejor serie del 2014
I know that too, I just find it ironic because the whole consensus of the anime is that people should be able to express their music in a variety of ways. That's why Kousei and Kaori were so popular - because their music was different, and then these same fans come to this video and instantly dislike because it is different :P
Discovered Wrong Note before the anime (just cause I like to see the rest of the Opus the Winter Wind Etude happened to be a part of). When it was played in the anime, I was glad they included Chopin Etudes to the repertoire.
Anyone else notice she plays the b's after the acciacatura chords as octaves? And that the ending seems to have the octaves removed from around the trills? Wonder which edition she's using? I prefer her interpretation of tempo here cause she seems to have interpreted the slower figurations as slower passages, so it all kinda fits - GO V!
CDDGR ohh right. Well it's normal. Music evolves, like everything, and people start liking other kinds of music. Among the people that actually enjoy this kind of music, though, Chopin is one of the best known composers, if not the most.
@612curtis left hand is still sustaining so it makes it work. i feel the same way about not ending on root, never heard anyone say the same thing, thought it was just me.
It's a little something called personal interpretation. She doesn't follow the notation exactly. She's proven herself capable of playing it correctly, and harder songs correctly, so it's personal choice to do what she did. Also, don't think that any woman presenting herself professionally can get away with NOT wearing makeup. It's a sad reality reinforced by patriarchal society, but women today need to do the superficial routine to be successful.
For me, playing piano is just a proof for the ability of learning in young years. people beginning playing with 30 years will never be as good as she is !
Oh my god is hard studying piano at 30 years because probably you have a job and going to conservatory is hard. but the most important thing is practicing and then the love to music
Could anyone tell me about any edition of Chopin's etudes that includes the right-hand octaves ar bars 43 / 44 & 45? ( 0:53 ) Ty in advice. Also loving her interpretation, never heard playing this etude like this before.
What's up with the octaves at 0:53 and 2:57? They're an interesting addition, and I can't say they're "right" or "wrong" but they're certainly not notated... the sheet music says simply the upper note of the RH octave she plays and the lower note of the LH octave she plays, in all of those cases where she rolls a chord and then hits those high octaves very quickly afterwards.
Chopin's biggest mistake was the intro and outro to the unbelievably perfect middle.; but I get IT. I also belive he could play it any way he wanted; as beautiful as she plays it, it could never reach chopins complete understanding of sound frequency and the universe
There's just one problem with this interpretation. The tempo mark reads"Scherzando e leggiero", which means playfully (scherzo: joke) and lightly. Although Lisitsa's interpretation is very nice, I do prefer it a bit "Scherzando e leggiero", like Richter's performance

Ok but the interpretation of the REAL pianist who played this piece in the anime is correct
Her interpretation is nearly a shit

Perhaps my favourite etude of them all, that middle section gives me emotions I never knew I had, plus the tempo in this is perfect, Bravo
This sounds beautiful and looks beautiful too. The camera work, the focus on her hands and sometimes on her face make this a real pleasure to watch.
I've never heard it like this.
