15 June 1998 | World Cup 1998 | Group G
In the 14 previous opening games of the World Cup, England have only managed to win three. The last was in 1982 against France in Bilbao.
It is undoubtedly cruel luck for Beckham who started in every World Cup qualifier, but the contention of Anderton has apparently come after several impressive displays in warm-up matches played behind closed doors. - Спорт

Ahh the memories of my high school letting us finish early so we were all at home in time for the 1.30pm kick off! Whether you liked football or not I'll never forget everyone being so happy! Those were the days.. Summer of 98 ❤
I recorded this match on vhs, sometimes I take it and watch from beginning to end. I remember the day this match was played... almost 23 years ago OMG.
It looks as nice now as I remember it- brilliantly sunny day in a nice little stadium, the atmosphere relaxed in a cheerful way. It always makes it nicer for me to watch a game played in full sun, rather than in shadow from a gigantic stand or in the fading light of late afternoon. As an England supporter the performance was pleasing, plenty of confident play and players striving to create chances, good work from a number of players (Campbell, Le Saux, Anderton, Ince, Shearer and Sheringham most notably in this highlights clip) and that memorable goal from Scholes, getting a good result to start the competition.
How I wish I could go back to June 15 1998
Why
Lol you have comment like this on other classic football match. So on which year you really want to go back?
time machine
Me too
I had just turned 18, what a time to be a utd supporter
Despite our loss , we gave our hearts out in this game , this team was the core of the one that would go on to win AFCON in 2004 , our goalkeeper El Ouaer was amazing in this game too.
Nevertheless , thank you for the upload !
England were quite lucky, they didn't have a good game.
@J B wellcome to tunisia ❤️
@J B are you english man?
Hoddle really loved Scholes as a player and was the only one to play him in an AM role.
For good reason he had a phenomenal game.
Agree, Scholes at his best
Yes...Hoddle is the only England manager that utilized scholes talent...
WW Cup 1998 in France it was so marvelous games & first WWCup I watched .. France , Brazil , Holland , Argentina , Croatian were a empires of football legendary
How I wish I could go back to 1998
France : zidane, brazil : ronaldo, italy : vieri, england : scholes, holland : bergkamp, spain : raul, argentina : batistuta, german : matthaus 😍😍😍😍
Me too
The best World Cup to date in my humble opinion.
WW Cup ??
The Tunisian goalkeeper El Ouaer had one hell of a game.
Arguably at fault for the first goal...
@@s1monz arguably stopped another 6 ffs 🤦🏾♂️
Without him it'd have been 4-0 at least.
the one and only England Manager to play players in their correct positions.
Southgate does now
Anderton out of position at RWB
Didn’t matter re: Anderton - he was flexible enough to adapt to that role and gave England the option of someone who could cut inside and provide an extra creative force once they got men forward. It paid off handsomely against Colombia with the opening goal.
Where was Le Tissier?
@ Wasn't selected.
Le Saux was actually good with his crosses, and Sheringham.. simply underrated!
The Tunisia goaly did a great job he had a lot of saves
golden video! France 98 is my fav wc ever . Wish i could see 10 mins HD highlights from every game
This was a very good match!Just remember it! I was 17 and a half! This England shirt was the best ever!90s and 2000's all shirts were the best !
P.S. thanks for the quality uploads
Watched this at school, great stuff.
The good old days of international football :(
american here, i think the international games today are better because of messi and ronaldo, the two best players of all time
@@littlebiits4216 are you kidding? because your comment, everybody around the world knows american people dosn't know about football, it's football not fucking soccer
well I have watched soccer since the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018 but i played FIFA the video game since 2015 after the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014 so I know quite a bit about soccer
@@littlebiits4216 well, yo don't know more than me, I have been watching football since the world cup usa 1994, I grew up playing the legendary game international super star soccer from snes, I saw football players who deserves be called legends, for example: romario, bebeto, roberto baggio, paolo maldini, zinedine zidane, henry, denis bergkamp, david beckhamp, ronaldo nazario R9 the brazilian phenom, alessandro del piero, francesco totti, thierry henry, batistuta, cannigia, maradona, paul scholes, paul gascoigne, erick cantona, georghe haggi, davor suker, the list is very long about all football legends that I know, football wasn't born with messy & cristiano.

Barry Davies was the master of commentating. I loved how he eschewed the conventional method of flat out describing any event within a game and using such a rich vocabulary to give the commentary more colour and depth. It’s like he channeled the mood of the nation. What a guy 😃
I think he nailed it with Bergkamp goal against Argentina at this tournament. Legend.
@@leighfletcher7675 Agreed. That was one hell of a commentary from our Barry 😃
Superb commentator. Yet the bbc binned him off in favour of the nauseating John Motson
@@alterbridgegod I did prefer Barry Davies, but quite liked Motson too. The commentator the BBC has used for most of the last decade (can't remember his name) is dreadful in my opinion, absolutely intolerable to listen to.
Scholes did everything right in this match glad he got a goal at the end but what a fantastic player
Scholes finishing in this wc was shocking
Easy chances missed in this game and crucially he missed an absolute sitter when England were 2-1 up against Argentina , if he buried that as he should have England would surely have gone through
@@twright1983 the sitter was harder than u thought
TITUS 3V5 it was a really bad miss
Missed two easy chances. Overrated
I've only watched 3 mins and Scholes has already missed 2 chances unmarked from 6 yards out 🤣
Scholes was superb
"Shouldn't you be at work?"
-Des Lynam's introduction to the audience at home watching on BBC One.
I loved this England team. They were a combination of solid and flexible. Maybe the emphasis on defence was too heavy - Owen aside they weren’t renowned for pace - but they had character and vision. And Beckham, and Scholes.
Agree . It was a great England team. Excellent work by Glenn huddle
Batty was rubbish tbf
I think the team was great having this balance in the midfield, if you continued with players like this the next 10 years, now the problem is Beckham the next couple of years you see beckham come into this team and totally change the dynamics of the team to a crossing and get rid of the ball team when the whole world was going hold the ball game, I seriously think Beckham coming in was bad for this teams future 😊
Tunis is a small country but very good at football MashaAllah. Glenn was a very good manager. Every England manager after him was poor. Except Southgate, who was clearly inspired him. Glenn picked players based on their talent, not their reputations and clubs.
Agreed

I was still in school during this world cup and the teachers actually let us watch this match, lol
Great commentary from Brian.
You mean Barry?
Scholes at his peak was a world-class player.
This wasnt even close to his peak either! If Hoddle stayed manager he said team would be built around him, he was much better then gazza
Tunisia played very well 👏
@Anthony Mcken that's been the nature of our national teams for decades , we usually give the big teams a hard time ( except for the belgium game in wc 2018 lol ) , yet we underperform against smaller teams.
England team is always loved by tunisian cultivated anglophones .. Your team is my favorite since euro 96 in wembley stadium :)
@@mohamedben7708 euro 96 was amazing the atmosphere whenever England played. English fans are the best
I watched this at high school. They sold tickets and we were able to watch it on a massive screen in the hall. I would have been 14. Great memories.
Haha. I was in high school as well. I was 13. Only caught the last 5 minutes cos school was in session when the match started. Supported England all the way. Really gutted to see them lose to Argentina. England could have gone all the way and won France 98 if they got past Argentina.
Super Choukri el ouaer 👏👏👏👏👏
3:30 "Fucking Hell!"
Buen contenido man
i always remember this game because we were allowed to watch it in my class at school, seems an age ago now
Good game. Excellent World Cup
Ooh, sleeky video!

The only part I actually got to see was that Sheringham chip that hit the post.I was in secondary school and that was shown live between classes. I'm finally seeing the actual goals.
Scholes: "Won't let me score an easy goal? Fine, I'll score a hard one."
Where did you get this ? Its amazing
I'd love to see general play along with chances to see how England build up play. Especially Scholes' role.
So good to see Scholes in an England shirt.
Yes, England's future looks very promising.
our teachers cancelled the lesson and let the whole year group watch this in the hall. Great times.
Вот это вот настоящая Англия. Прям, чувствуется. Здорово, что есть записи. Решил вспомнить и почувствовать ту Англию.
This was my favorite era of football
I was a kid in this era who later stopped being fan around early 2000s... yes this era from euro 96 I got interested in football
Monday 15th June 1998
Scholes jogou DEMAIS nessa partida !!
My favourite England jersey :)
Scholes legend❤️
scholes = Good to be Striker And Midfield
It was a war in the streets of marseille but a different atmosphere inside the stadium. what a wonderful memory this one
How I wish I could go back to 1996
This was 1998.
Will Scarlett yeah but if he goes back to 1996 he gets to experience 1996 AND 1998. 😉
Make your mind up, you said 98 at the start of the thread.
Our middle school in England let us watch this briefly in our assembly before home time..
Then I was 10 yrs old boy, I miss my childhood.
Thats one clear picture
I was allowed to watch this at school
Yes same memory also, we briefly watched part of it in assembly
Barry Davies. Levels above the nonsense of today. Where everyone's opinion is more important than describing the action.
Nice
1-0 Alan Shearer (42 min)
2-0 Paul Scholes (89 min)
England had a decent side back then, quality players in all areas of the pitch. Remember this so well, I was 19 and remember the summer of 98 like it was yesterday!
I wish if we had someone like shokri now as a goal keeper and captain . 🇹🇳
This might have been my favorite England Football Jerseys of all time. Wish they weren't oversized like everything in the 90s :D
I was at this game.
tunisian goalkeeper comes from the same city as my father he was considered one of the best goalie and a literal gangster in the pitch if you piss him off or try to brag he could chop your head off with one of his karate air kicks 😂
England returned to a World Cup after 8 years and Tunisia 20 years later like Iran and in the last two World Cups Tunisia won a World Cup match against Panama and France
Decent players
full match
A team of leaders still like in 96 Seaman Adams Ince Batty Shearer Sheringham plus great youth Campbell Scholes Beckham Owen still hurts like hell what happened in the 2nd round 😢😢😢
재밌네요~^
Sheringham as midfielder and Scholes as striker, right? That was creative.
Remember school assembly, instead of the usual BS, they had a big projector playing this match
Was that the group of death with Romania and Colombia?
I think it was Group D with Spain, Nigeria, Bulgaria and Paraguay.
Same old Shearer. Always scoring.
Alan shearer... my favourite newcastle united..
To date, i still font understand why Hoddle chose Anderton over Beckham.
I feel Hoddle had a personal grudge with Becks
Anderton played better as a wing-back than Becks. Becks was better in the middle.
@@psifla99 I didn't know Anderton could also play wing-back...why did Man U want him in the '90s?? Him and Beckham would be fighting over the same spot (just like in WC 98 here)
Anderton was playing at an excellent level during 96-98 before injuries got him. Fergie wanted him.
Anderton was also a fantastic athlete, a cross-country fanatic and an excellent footballer to boot - perfect for the wing-back role.
@@leemcb7297 Anderton was a winger through and through, whether as wing-back or a more dedicated attacking position, whereas Beckham I would never call a winger, more a right-sided midfielder.
Shearer scored, I think "who else" And then the commentator said an exact same thing 😁
Looked so hot on that pitch. Absolutely satuated in sun
I like very much world cup in France. Disappointed by England Who deserved better.
Love that shirt
Tahia Tounes 🇹🇳✌️🇵🇸
Matt Le Tissier, McManaman, Pearce and Parlour should have played in this WC. Hoddle not selecting Ray Parlour Arsenal Player of the Year and Stuart Pearce was a big mistake. Sherringham and Shearer SAS England’s best forward duo ever. Hoddle got a lot of things right at this WC but his physic guru was over the top. As a Spurs fan I love Anderton but McManaman was alot more talented and Parlour was better suited to play along side Ince.
I would have said that Parlour and Ince were rather similar players, rather than ones which would compliment one another. I always liked Pearce, but he was 36 by this time, long in the tooth for a full back.
Le Saux who was picked instead of Pearce assisted the first England goal of this WC.
He made error with Petrescu's winner in the next game though.
In regards to your Parlour comment. It's a bit like why wasn't Beckham & Scholes & maybe even Butt selected for Euro96 considering they'd just won the double? It wouldn't happen these days after players have contributed to seasons like that for their club they'd always be picked.
Mcmanaman was better at dribbling and running at teams, but Andertons passing and crossing was better. Was also better defensively which helped in his wingback role.
Shearer's first World Cup goal
Paul Scoles is the only player i think who is english and also have the ability to give maximum performence in football pitch........ENGLAND should have won this WC but bad luck their was only 1 Scoles in the field......
Learn how spaces work pal.
Glen Hoddle was the best coach manager of England next was Bobby Robson second to no one.. Just they failed due to some skills and positive attitude by the team
Why was Beckham on the bench?
@13 90 cheers x
Anderton = hoodle
12 is god gifted number 🙄🙄🙄
With everything that happened before the match I would have hoped for Tunisia to win the game.
Batty oh dear we didn't have anything better
This england team play better than 2006 and for me better team.
Second best England team ever Beckham, scholes, Sherringham, Barnes, Campbell, Gascoigne, Heskey, Shearer, .. they always beat the best team never unbeaten
Paul Scholes
england vs france reserve
sorry to say, like lampard, Scholes just didnt do enough for England. He was never the big game player for his country.
So you saying you are better than them
@@MrKAKARONALDOMESSI so you have to better than the person you are criticising, to make a comment? so no one can criticise a politician, or leader, a millionaire? Only a black man would make such a comment.
Scholes carried England until Gerrard and Lampard came along, Scholes moved out left when he should've been playmaker.
I Miss Barry Davis .
