    15 June 1998 | World Cup 1998 | Group G
    In the 14 previous opening games of the World Cup, England have only managed to win three. The last was in 1982 against France in Bilbao.
    It is undoubtedly cruel luck for Beckham who started in every World Cup qualifier, but the contention of Anderton has apparently come after several impressive displays in warm-up matches played behind closed doors.

      It looks as nice now as I remember it- brilliantly sunny day in a nice little stadium, the atmosphere relaxed in a cheerful way. It always makes it nicer for me to watch a game played in full sun, rather than in shadow from a gigantic stand or in the fading light of late afternoon. As an England supporter the performance was pleasing, plenty of confident play and players striving to create chances, good work from a number of players (Campbell, Le Saux, Anderton, Ince, Shearer and Sheringham most notably in this highlights clip) and that memorable goal from Scholes, getting a good result to start the competition.

      Anderton was playing at an excellent level during 96-98 before injuries got him. Fergie wanted him.
      Anderton was also a fantastic athlete, a cross-country fanatic and an excellent footballer to boot - perfect for the wing-back role.

      @@leemcb7297 Anderton was a winger through and through, whether as wing-back or a more dedicated attacking position, whereas Beckham I would never call a winger, more a right-sided midfielder.

    Matt Le Tissier, McManaman, Pearce and Parlour should have played in this WC. Hoddle not selecting Ray Parlour Arsenal Player of the Year and Stuart Pearce was a big mistake. Sherringham and Shearer SAS England’s best forward duo ever. Hoddle got a lot of things right at this WC but his physic guru was over the top. As a Spurs fan I love Anderton but McManaman was alot more talented and Parlour was better suited to play along side Ince.

    • @danyoutube7491
      @danyoutube7491 Год назад

      I would have said that Parlour and Ince were rather similar players, rather than ones which would compliment one another. I always liked Pearce, but he was 36 by this time, long in the tooth for a full back.

      Le Saux who was picked instead of Pearce assisted the first England goal of this WC.
      He made error with Petrescu's winner in the next game though.
      In regards to your Parlour comment. It's a bit like why wasn't Beckham & Scholes & maybe even Butt selected for Euro96 considering they'd just won the double? It wouldn't happen these days after players have contributed to seasons like that for their club they'd always be picked.

      Mcmanaman was better at dribbling and running at teams, but Andertons passing and crossing was better. Was also better defensively which helped in his wingback role.
