    02 April 2003 | Euro 2004 Qualifier
England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson sprang a surprise before kick-off, as he drafted Rooney in alongside Michael Owen. The Swede also changed the midfield to a diamond, with Paul Scholes behind the front two and Nicky Butt in for Kieron Dyer to anchor, while Sol Campbell returned from an achilles injury in defence. Turkey partnered Nihat Kahveci and Ilhan Mansiz in attack in preference to Hakan Sükür.

The quality was amazing. Look at the teams back then! Brazil, portugal, Italy, france, England and even Germany. Look at the players they all had. Over the last 20 years the amount of truly world class players has diminished and I don’t get why? Is it due to clubs buying more instead of brining on youth?

All Turks were madmen once upon a time, they would give everything for the team but other teams were not like that. But today it's the opposite, the modern football requires everything you have to give in the field but now our guys, the new generation are like girls, "uh I can't block that it may hurt my foot :(" thinking like it's the proffessionalism, but it's the opposite. In those times all our men were eager to give everything they have although they know that it may "hurt" their career and that was why Turkey was so successful in 2002 and 2008. The passion. If we had some luck besides the passion and success, we would become the world champion in 2002 and European champion in 2008, but in both championship, the refs were the ones who ruined Turkey's efforts, and ended the way to glory.

The Latvian pairing is, in my opinion, just an occupational accident. Turkey is the best period from 1998-2004. @@JSL2000 get stuffed yer knob head. Chelsea fans only kicked off outside their ground not long back. It wasn't the behaviour of fans tghat won them titles you tit, it was their billionaire chairman's money. I'd hardly call a few over excited fans jumping on the pitch football hooligans you idiot. It's not the fans ruining footy matey it's money. Look at what's happened to some clubs in lower leagues who have never had trouble at games but haven't won a fuckin thing except bankruptcy because of all the money and TV exposure going to Premier league. Football was much better back in the day and the atmosphere at grounds was much better. Now get stuffed with yer whingin' and whining yer big girls blouse yer no nowt about footy. Football belonged to the working class and it's middle class muppets and money men ruining the game, not proper fans you idiot.

The Stadium of Light should be used more often. It's more intimidating up there hence why the stadium was selected in the first place. It didn't disappoint.
