Unlike most, Journey of Dreams was my first experience with the series outside of Sega All Stars Tennis, if you want to count that. I knew even back then that motion controls were garbage, so I experienced the game in the right way with button controls. It is still one of my favorite Wii games to this day and one game that i’m not ashamed to admit actually made me cry with Dreams Dreams Sweet Snow. Journey of Dreams is one of the best hidden gems on Wii, fight me.

This game was my childhood, I've never played the originals yet (I was 11 when I was gifted the game), but looking back I see how much this shaped who I am now.
I can see that the story is quite simple and how everything is magically solved by the power of friendship, but this remains my favourite Wii game.
My family also really liked it, my dad gave it to me at Christmas and both him and my grandparents loved to sit with me in the living room while playing, my grandpa LOVES the opening scene.
This game is also the reason I picked up the violin, I'll admit I didn't practice a lot but I still love this instrument because of NiGHTS.
I'm so glad to finally find the people who actually KNOW this game because for YEARS I was the only persson who seemed to have played it.

All my problems with the game are fixed with using a classic controller or Gamecube controller. It’s really fun once you play it like an actual game. And the score slaps.

oh yeah, i agree fully. the wii mote gimmick was just too ambitious for its time, the tech just wasn't there. if they tried this NOW with the switch joy cons it probably would fair better but even still i'd probably play it with a controller.

I think this game is best experienced on the GameCube controller, since it's rumble on that controller is actually really well done! You saw how, when a stage is about to give way to a boss fight, the background would begin to pulse like a heartbeat? The GameCube controller actually rumbles in time with that, subtly at first but intensifying alongside the visual effect. The fact that it achieves such good speed control on a rumble motor that I'm not sure even _has_ speed control is a testament to the devs' attention to detail.

This is definitely my comfort game and it was a huge part of my childhood, It was my introduction to the franchise and I think it says a lot that I loved it so much even without the nostalgia bias. It sad that it's not really talked about anymore but it will always have a place in my heart.

I may actually try this game out! My biggest thing about this game that I'm iffy about is the writing, and the kid models. I really wish they stuck to the Saturn style for the people, mainly because the Claire and Elliot models in this game look MILES better than every other human in the game. (That is in real time, the pre rendered cutscenes are gorgeous)

I didn't exist in the 90's. When i think of NiGHTS, this is the game that i think of. Its very special to me. I got it as a Christmas gift and its been a tresure ever since. I with it was looked at more fondly by the community. Ive played the original when it was ported to 360. And it for sure was a vibe.
I sympathize with your frustration. This game has all the ingredients to being a masterpiece of story and gameplay. The game gets by on fun and vibes but ive always seen the potential if they just keep going.

It’s so good, that I would like another nights game.
    With modern day going around
I wouldn’t be surprised if the first world would involve nature with all 4 seasons where you fight a factory puzzle based boss where you have to switch with nights and the child to beat the boss, also with the garden area you could design the area how you like it by using the currency and dream materials that you get from each level that you get as both the chosen child and nights with you unlocking more space as you beat bosses, also you could recruit each enemies to not only give you bonuses for each level, but you would also get some of the nightopians to be happy, and you could also recruit the bosses to have jobs in the garden which would give you a permanent bonus and you could interact with them.
With the boss I mentioned, his job would to train the nightopians to fight. Which would allow you to fight bosses you’ve beaten, and if you find memory cards in the levels, you could fight the reimagined version of the previous bosses, with the magician chameleon you’d start as the child where you have to find nights in one of the joker cards, while fighting the other cards while avoiding the boss’s Magic based attacks.
Damn I have so much ideas for a sequel.

This would've been my first Nights game if I did play it when it came out. I would've been right at the age where this would be the one that was part of my childhood. But even though it wouldn't be until early adulthood, I am glad I played the original (or at least the steam port of the remaster) as my firsthand Nights exposure instead. As someone born a couple years after the Saturn release, no nostalgia tax included, playing and understanding that game really is something special. And while I do think some of the ideas Journeys brings are pretty cool additions at least conceptually for a more recent game under the IP, it... Just really doesn't have that same... Charm for lack of a better word. I wouldn't call it soulless at all, definitely not, just that something about the simplicity you feel would make ppl not care about the game even by the mid 00's let alone in modern day i think is the series true strength.
Like yeah, lots of the gaming community is always demanding more, more, more, it's all about how much content you can pour precious hours in for a lot of ppl, especially with prices going up for games, if only triple A atm, so many quantify a games worth by how long they're playing. But in my eyes, that's a misguided sentiment of the community, and not a flaw of a game for being a more simple arcadey experience.
Recently I've found some of my most fun with gaming the past few years have been with simple arcade or arcade styled titles older than I am. And they can work out financially too, Streets of Rage 4 being a major example since it was mentioned in video lol. And I think it'll ring especially true going forward, as while obviously this video was made before all this, it turns out the "make games big" chase is apparently causing a lot of the triple A side of things to crap itself atm going by news I'm hearing. My point being there is a place for more pure, video gamey styled titles for sure and for Nights in particular, but imo it doesn't need to try to be Journey but with more stuff.
I think the next Nights games would benefit having the main campaign as more like the original. A pick up and play exhilarating score chasing venture that feels great to try to master while having a narrative carrying on the beautiful themes the series was built on, telling it closer to how the original did rather than going the route Journey does with more cutscenes and a lot of dialogue and that damn owl lol.
What it should follow Journey's example in though, is all those extra missions and neat objectives like chasing something, having levels as just the kids, or even like the one where you control Nights to play Dreams Dreams with the musical notes as fun separate modes fleshed out in and of themselves. And of course a proper Nightopian raising side game since they absolutely refuse to bring Chao Garden back in Sonic for some reason and Nights started that kind of system for Sonic Team anyway. That'd be 100s of hours right there for many lol. All while not drastically changing up the main attraction of Nights too much while still keeping some of the actually cool concepts Journey introduced as separate, smaller activities to do at the player's leisure to have something else to do. And of course things like a gallery, juke box, implement seasonal/internal clock bonuses like the og if that's not too demanding in modern day for a AA scale title.

  • @ikagura

It's decent. It could've totally been a great sequel/reboot for Into Dreams if it wasn't for the tons of cutscenes and forced side missions (especially the 3D platformer with the kids) as well as making it more realistic looking (the low poly and more anime style characters made it more oniric on the Saturn).
The game would've benefited a lot from having an Arcade Mode with the hard mode bosses by default.

Before hearing his voice, I always assumed Nights was female 🤨
But all things considered, I wish he didn't have a voice at all. He just seems more like a cosmic entity that exists in his own realm detached from our reality, and as such wouldn't have use for human language.

Both Nights and Reala are meant to be genderless. They used male pronouns for Nights because saying “it” was rude… they clearly didn’t consider “they”.
That said, Reala is clearly more masculine, which is why I’ve always viewed Nights as more feminine.

    • @cyborgwizard8923
      @cyborgwizard8923 Год назад +1

In the first game, into Dreams, all the characters actually spoke in a "dream language" that SEGA made up to cement that idea of these characters being otherworldly. I guess they dumped that idea since there was more dialogue in this game and making up an entire language to make sense between conversations would have been a bit much.

    • @MagillanicaLouM
      @MagillanicaLouM Год назад +2

Thing is, the Nightmaren and Nightopians already did use a dream language in the original in the rare instances of voices being used like when you run out of time on the clock as Nights and revert back to Clariot. Or at the start of Reala's boss fight.
And yeah even in the og Nights has a feminine voice in those rare instances. I know they're genderless dream beings with the idea being the player decides what they are and Journey just refers to both as dudes as an umbrella to keep it simple, but I refer to Nights as a girl and Reala as a guy. Beyond the fact one is obviously designed to be more feminine looking and the other more masculine, imo I think it kinda enhances their dichotomy as characters anyway. Just further showing them as opposites. Also I spent like over a decade calling Nights a chick when I first saw her in Sonic Pinball Party when i was like 7 long before learning the lore lol.

I played the whole game with motion controls due to not knowing I could use anything else. I REALLY wish I hadn't because it made the overall experience more frustrating than it needed to have been.
With that said, I did complete the game with motion controls (not 100% but I got to the ending), so the charm of the game did outweigh the poor motion controls. Even as a child with a horrendously low attention span and tolerance for frustration, I wanted to master those bad controls just to be able to keep playing through the game's music and set pieces. And when I got to the Growing Wings section, I just about teared up from the music alone. It was satisfying to reach the end, but I wouldn't do it again and feel really dumb that I didn't know it took other controllers.

i gotta speak my piece: i hated this game. the assertion by this video (and some individuals in the ign reviews comments) that its better then the saturn game in every way makes me feel like i played a different game then everyone else. i will admit i do like wii dreams ost better then saturn dreams but the story? the show dont tell approach of the saturn game works so much better then the after school special acting in wii dreams. the fact that all controllers that support this game have an octagonal gate is a HUGE deal. the fact you cant do laps of the course in the bird ruins half the fun of nights, and the fact that the ideya orb retrieval was replaced by the bird is also lame, its just a less fun gameplay mechanic. the level design is worse too, the more compact and densely packed levels of the original are replaced with wide open... straight lines youre expected to fly through or your score sucks. the game feels more on rails and its super weak. and who played saturn nights and went " hmmm flying is cool but we need more claris platforming" NOBODY! this decision baffles me it makes noooo sense, its just padding, not like the game is that much longer then saturn nights. octopaw is neat but the controls ruin it and its so easy getting an A rank and getting higher than that is tedious because of the no time limit and controls. and the rest of the gameplay styles are whatever, nobody wants to push bubbles and hunt for enemies in a linear maze, nights is about flying, shame sonic team didnt get it. btw no need to praise a wii game in 2007 for having widescreen, saturn version had widescreen too.
saturn nights is a special game no other has been able to replicate, not even the sequel, calling it better is bafdling to me.

After watching your video, I want to give this game another shot, but I don't think it is as good as the original, and I am not being nostalgic when I say that. I huge part of Nights gameplay is the physics, it's like Sonic games, if you manage to avoid the obstacles, Nights gain momentum and becomes faster and faster. There is no momentum in the Wii game. Another issue the Wii game have is that is too "gimmicky", the stages have the weird objectives, and because of that it feels like less focused and streamlined. It's similar to a game like Sonic Lost World, in my opinion.
In terms of presentation, it's also inferior to the original. The original game was incredibly pretty for a SEGA Saturn game and it's still one of the best looking 5th generation games. The stages were all crazy and unique. The Wii game is not ugly by any means, and has some interesting ideas, but the level themes look more generic and uninspired in comparison.
Unfortunately, I think Nights is a series that doesn't work in the modern game industry. The original game is too "arcady" and simple and that worked for a 5th gen. Tones of successful 5th games were just as short, and just as simple. I don't think being a product of its time is a bad thing. Some games just work in specific generations. It's like series like Starfox. There is a reason why Nintendo doesn't invest in Starfox anymore, the series just doesn't fit in the modern game industry landscape. Just like Nights.
I think they tried to make the game have less content, but I kinda hurt the experience because it made the game less streamlined and focused. I don't think is necessarily a bad game, but it's just not as iconic and classic as the original.

    • @Thebrotherhoodofgaming
      @Thebrotherhoodofgaming  Год назад

I understand where you are coming from and while I do agree the way the games ultimately play are different with the first one being more "arcady" by nature only fuels the idea that both games are just made on a different foundation for the eras. I still believe it ultimately makes the sequel a better game in the long run but it's cool you love the original more. I think both hold up fine when you recognize the franchise for what it is.
As for your idea that games like Nights and Starfox not being able to work in a modern gaming world? I don't think that's true. That WOULD be the case if they refuse to let the games and characters evolve and become more than the sum of their parts and be locked into a gameplay style that... while still could exist in game. Should be relegated to a sub part or mini game. The adventures and stories and gameplay should try new ideas. There's plenty of options to explore. They just need a visionary with some heart... and some balls. To give it a chance.

@@Thebrotherhoodofgaming I don't think the bad physics of Nights Journey of Dreams was made on purpose. It's more likely that the developers didn't pay attention to this details. We are talking about the same studio that had struggle with reproducing Sonic physics in the past. Many of the developers working on this game didn't work in the original.
I think it's still a good game, even with this issues, but the original nights is a classic, I wouldn't say this one is. It's a good game, not an all time classic.
When It comes to my comment about some games not working in the modern generations. Well, you can evolve the games, but there is a ceiling. There is not much innovation left to implement in a rail shooter game like Starfox, eventually the series becomes stagnant. Nintendo doesn't invest in Starfox anymore because of that. It was Just an example.
I think Nights is similar to that in a sense that there is clearly a limit where you can push the formula forward. Journey of Dreams introduced some interesting things, even though It lacks in the physics departament. But, it's clear to me that Nights is not versatile enough to last hundreads of games. Like Sonic, Mario or other mascots

I kinda hated the game, the stages were ok, but lacked something. The extra side missions seem too unfinished and almost in an unplayable state, they really shouldn't have been manditory. And WHY DOES EVERY CHARACTER IN THIS GAME LOOK LIKE GOLLUM FROM LORD OF THE RINGS.

Oh I hate the human models so much, and the use of mo cap.
Mo cap is great for realistic humanoid characters, not really for cartoon characters

its certainly an odd direction to be sure. i dont know if it was cheaper that way or if no one felt like animating.

@@Thebrotherhoodofgaming Yeah, mo cap is cheaper than hand animation, but it should not be used for every 3d character

@@Thebrotherhoodofgaming doubt it. Sega is focusing on Yakuza and Sonic (and struggling with sonic). But I would like to be proven wrong.
Having a new nights game with level design on par or better that the first, with the camera of the second, and new character designs

@@teneesh3376 whats interesting to me is, Sega is very open about allowing their fans to create their own fan games, the Sonic fan game community booming with amazing fan games and talented creators. Why hasn't anyone tried to make their own NiGHTS fan game?
