Highwall Ductless Blower Wheel Cleaning

- In this video, Sam and Jake with Kalos Services show the steps of a thorough highwall ductless blower wheel cleaning. They remove and clean a Mitsubishi ductless mini-split blower wheel.
First, you must lift up the shroud and removes the air filters from both sides. Then, remove the front cover entirely and slides the horizontal vanes right out. If you want to remove the face of the unit, you have to remove plastic clips on the bottom to expose the Phillips-head screws underneath. Once you remove the screws, you can remove the face.
To access the blower wheel on a highwall ductless system, you have to release the drain pan and let it angle downward. (Remove water from the pan beforehand.) To remove the blower wheel, you will need to remove the set screw, remove the screws along the side to move the coil out of the way, and then pull the blower wheel out.
You can clean the blower wheel outside with a hose, sometimes even using a mild, safe cleaner like Refrigeration Technologies Viper EVAP+. Allow the blower wheel to dry fully before putting it back.
Once the blower wheel is dry, insert it back into the unit and reverse all of the steps you took to remove the blower wheel. Then, you can clean up the job site, finish up the customer communication, and go home.

Very useful video
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid lost my password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Mateo Cyrus Instablaster :)
@Alejandro Elijah I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Alejandro Elijah it worked and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass !
@Mateo Cyrus you are welcome =)
Swear this was better than ANY cleaning Mitsubishi Split video ever made! Why? IT WAS FAST AND SIMPLE!!!
The place I rent has this unit but with just two screws hold the front on. It’s been 99 and up here in Florida. My little place just wasn’t cooling down. Looked in the unit and saw this solid black mass. Followed this video and after an hour of cleaning the blower it’s like a whole new unit. So cold and so much air. Thank you guys.
Good job 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
It feels good, doesn’t it? Wish me good luck. 👌🏻
Thank you! Had no idea about air conditioners. It was dripping onto my wall, most likely from a blocked evacuation duct (it was newly installed last winter, not sure how that happened). So what I did was disassemble the front part and tilted it some more so that it dripped from the blade fan, into a large bowl. It got us through June like this, when one day we noticed the bowl stopped filling. The evacuation duct cleared itself of the debris, and now the condensation drips outside again.
Now its September, and we are on the last days were we need the AC. I managed today to put it back and take out the paper I slit in for tilting it more. Learned a little bit about how air conditioners work, and fixed it myself. Feels great. Hope you have a great day!
This video was so clutch, literally followed step for step and did the exact same thing on 1 of my units. Literally going to be the training video for us lol.
Thank you so much! This made a huge difference in my coffee shop. I had no idea the fans got dirty but when the filters were clean and there was still little air coming out, this was the answer. Again, thank you!
Great video, saving people money!
You're providing a great service to people... I've got an HVAC buddy and I asked him to check the pressure of my freon. I told him I'd read that low freon will cause freezing over. He said yes, as well as dirty filters and blower wheel.
I'd never thought the blower wheel would have such an impact, but I'd also noticed diminished air flow... waiting till sunset to pull blower wheel. My filters have never really been dirty, each time I cleaned them.
Had to rewind this about 100 times at least during my cleaning session lol
I wanna thank you so much,… I have the same exact one, and that totally saved my ass, lots of nastiness, mold, and grime in there. Thank you again.
I’m so mad! My until stopped working last night. I have either this exact model or one that’s super close to it. When I got it, they told me they are super easy to maintain, just pull out the filter things once ever few weeks & rinse off, put back in & that’s it. Water was dripping, so I tuned it off & left it. Came to YT & found this video. I didn’t know the blower wheel needed cleaned like that. I live in the country where we get horrible wind (Eastern Oregon), it’s hot AF in summer & always dusty. I just looked at mine & that thing is GROSS! It literally looks like dried mud on it. Thankfully my husband it’s good at things like this & is gonna take it apart now to clean it. Our one upstairs stopped working last year. I bet the blower wheel is so bad that it can’t rotate. I’m so thankful you did this. You’ve saved us a headache & a lot of money. Thank you!!!
What gets me is none of these sales people or anyone for that matter talks about this major problem..
THANK YOU!!! -Your video just saved us hundreds of dollars as the installation tech said, “There is no way you can clean these yourself. It’s just too technical and could be dangerous. We recommend you getting us out here every three months…no later than 6-months between cleanups. For your four units it would be $500, -but we’ll give you a discount to $350.” $1400/year Vs a couple of hours and a pack of Clorox wipes. Actually was fun once the first one was done!
My AC company wants $340 per blower wheel and I have 5 units.
What a joke. If your careful with the plastic you don't need to call anyone. You need 1 screw driver and 45 minutes. An hour if you've never did it before. Don't believe these goofballs, I do 14 of these in a lodge every 6 months. This is not some skill a handy person can't aquire. This video shows you everything you need to do, except it doesn't caution you on how easy this plastic is to break.
Your HVAC companies are ripping you off. My company offers 2 visits a year for $200 for basic maintenance where we clean and inspect all the components both mechanical and electrical. I'd say call around and talk with other companies if you ever find you have issues or get sick of doing the maintenance yourself.
If I can't maintain it, I don't want it.
Not all mini's are as maintainable as mitsubishi. On some makes the blower wheel does not come out like that, it is the deepest part. The whole entire unit has to be disassembled in order to get it out.
Thank you, this is the best video on removing the blower. Quick and to the point with all necessary information. I can clean the blades faster and more thoroughly by removing them than by trying to clean them in place, even with the few extra steps.
Thank you so much for this video. One of my units just wasn't keep room cool. Hardly blowing air compared to others. Following thos video I took it apart and gave thorough cleaning....it was nasty...I mean NASTY! Blower wheel very gunked up so air couldn't fully pass through. Working great now. Thank you!
I'm out in the field right now and this was a such a informative video. I feel much more confident in removing the blower wheel. Thank you guys
My AC guy charged us $600 to top up Freon and said it would cost $13k to fix. The unit simply needed cleaning. I’m a 63 y.o. Woman and even I could do this. THANK YOU!!
Cute as can be, as well!
Then stop hiring one man show, hire an actually company where as they can’t rip u off
62 yo woman with water dripping from the front. After watching a few videos and ordering a wet dry vac I decided to just take the water hose and spray up into the drain hose just a bit. Tons of water came pouring out along with some goop. Works like brand new and I needed a shop vac anyway😅
Thank you for making this video straight to the point! Good job bud
Thanks man. I always feel like I'm going to break a customers unit. Good tips, very appreciated.
Thank you. That was a very short, to the point , and informative video.
Very useful video. Thanks. I have an LG with the same problem. Your instruction confirm the approach I took and my reasoning. The only problem is that in the LG the are obviously some other retainer clips hidden here and there. Preventing me from lifting the evaporator. But I am on the right track. Thank you.
Thank you, I cleaned the blower wheel after watching your video, it’s a Senville Leto from Amazon, super cold now that the air is moving again !
Always used the drop bag pressure washer type set up. Which was always a mess and time consuming. Pulled the mini split blower for the first time and it’s a lot easier. It takes some finesse. Putting everything back in place but yep.. gonna do that from now on.
This is incredibly helpful. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I watched your video and did it myself! Thank you!
Thank you! I cleaned everything myself and made it way better than any technician would do. Next time I’ll clean the radiator with special foam, unfortunately I didn’t buy it and hoped the vacuum cleaner would be enough (nope, it's useless). However, cleaning the fan and drainage tray was enough to achieve freshness when turning the aircon on.
I used a paint brush and warm water to clean the radiator fins. But if I do it again I think i need some gear to flush it out with large volumes of water and something to catch the water underneath...
I did clean it without dismantling the vanes. The roller type blower has thin plastic vanes. Heavy accumulation of dust and dirt cake the vanes. They can be easily cleaned using a mascara brush very well.
Really good vid thanks.
I was able to figure out my Tadiran from it and the job went great. Biggest problem for me was lining up the condensor and the motor cover when putting it back together and then of course one screw left over !!!!
Good thing to do as well is blow out the drain line from the inside when you have the drain pan unmounted. I just use a nitrogen tank with an a/c line set flush attachment and as little nitrogen pressure as needed. Helps eliminate the service calls for water dripping down the wall because the drain pan is clogged (which is more than half of them from my experience).
Not many people trying to save money by doing this themselves will have access to that gear, right? ;) I use air compressor to blow through it, but not many people have access to air compressor either.
it cant be clearer than this..kudos!
Thanks. I have the same unit and I just cleaned it for the first time. Yuck! Now I know how to do it I can keep it from getting gross again. Nice tutorial. Thanks again.
Just what i needed, Much Appreciated.
How do you turn off the power to the unit? There is no power switch!
Thank you. Made it alot easier to do. Really helpful
this mini is too close to the top. Dont you think? thanks for the tips
Good Stuff - Very useful video. My Daikin Mini-split is working great now. Thanks~
Very good video and well filmed. I do wonder if you couldn’t use a spray can of air or compressed air dialed down to blow out the wheel. Especially if you routinely do some maintenance. Obviously garages are dusty places and it might not work there.
very clear- excellent job. THANKS
Hello,
I have a Senville SENL24CD/IX.
I am needing to remove the squirrel cage fan but there is no access to the motor retaining screw.
Based on the maintenance manual it looks as though the evaporator needs to be lifted up on the motor side to access the retaining screw.
Unfortunately the refrigerant lines going through the wall will not allow me to raise the evaporator.
Is this the design? It's basically impossible to do unless I pull the unit off the wall way high in the air just for routine service?
Thank you,
Michael Hrischuk
I noticed the front cover was loosened before you took the screws off. I am STILL trying to get it off without falling off the ladder. can you please show in detail how to get it off. thank you
Great video and great voice!
Be sure to inspect the wheel and determine if it's good enough to go back in. Some mini splits have a rubber end holding the shaft that acts as a flex coupler. If that wears out and gets too soft a perfectly cleaned wheel will vibrate even with a new motor and bearings.
Hi Mike... Hope you can comment on this. We did multiple in the house. The units are pretty new. Just 2 years. And one rattles now that we put it back together. But if we push up on the upper left corner, it stops. Can you help? Quadruple checked all screws, set screws clips, etc ...
@@breannakimes3207 I've run into the same problem. I only hear what sounds like rubbing of fins with AC cooling operation, not while heating.
@@breannakimes3207mine did the same and I adjusted the blower wheel set screw a couple of times (tighter and then looser) and it eventually stopped the brushing sound of the wheel when in operation.
This is my second time cleaning my heat pump. I removed the set screw for the fan and freed the other end completely, but the fan just wouldn't budge. I even applied quite a bit of force, but no luck. I remember having the same issue the first time I took it apart, though I did manage to get it out back then. Any advice? Should I hit it with a hammer? 😅
How did you make out w this? I’m in a similar situation. Blower won’t go back on all the way
This is the method with Mitsubishi units. Most other units don’t require the pan to drop, and have a bushing/bearing on the far end of the wheel that needs to be dealt with. Some Daiken units don’t even have a set screw making then even easier to clean. Which is a good thing because for some reason Daiken units seem to get dirty the fastest.
Very tempted to diy. But i think i wont be able to fix it back😅
I didn't see mention of the rubber gasket on end of the blower wheel. My question is, does that piece need to be lubricated?
In Trinidad and Tobago we used pressure washer up to 2100 psi to clean coils and wheel without damaging to both fins and blower wheel
I am going to do it!!!! Love doing things myself!
You can do it!
That metal fence cover by by the planes can I just remove that to vacuum clean?
My ductless had a refrigerant leak which caused a lot of condensation on the coil and wheel. I did this cleaning method but now I have a musty smell. The unit was thoroughly dried before starting back up again. Any ideas? 😫
Any idea why on reassembly my blower wheel doesn’t move freely. Mitsubishi. Followed these to the letter. I’m stumped
Appreciate it! Helped be out a ton
Excellent
If you happen to clean a Senville Leto (18K BTU) mini-split, PLEASE record and post the cleaning of the indoor unit! Thanks!
What do you do if the veins are getting stuck to open when you turn the unit on? Does it need oil ?
What if my blower wheel wont come out? Ive tried prying on it and damn is it stuck! When its in it still spins so idk why its so stuck.
How often should you clean the blower wheel in good old humid Florida?
How do I reset the louver on a DuctlessAire? (I believe it is a Daiken type system) I gently moved it from the closed position to allow access for removal. Now when I put it back together I couldn't manually return it to closed and when turned off, it remains partially open.
SAVED MY LIFE BROTHER!
QUESTION! What happens if after you remover blower wheel clean and put back in it no longer spins?
And if the coil gets bent up on the bottom ridges will that show a E3 code? Please someone help, thank you!
Did you tighten the screw holding the blower to the motor shaft?
Thanks, amazing help!
Wonder if y'all could do a train model high wall mini split maintenance clean out the rollers I got a really dirty or blowers
Just done! Thank you!
Can someone tell me how long I have to wait to use the unit after cleaning it like this?? (Asking because the blower wheel isn't completely dry after hosing it off)
Our apt unit just installed these!!! They make constant noise... like rolling rocks. How can anyone sleep with this noise? I live in a efficiency so it's in the same room I sleep in. Central heat and air was silent. I've called maintenance they washed the filter it wasn't dirty. I have it set on automatic temperature of 75. Is it normal to have disruptive sleep. It's driving me crazy I'm someone who likes quiet at 3:00 seriously. Any help would be appreciated
Good job
Great job and video
Glad you enjoyed it
Good work
Tried cleaning the fan in the bath with a hot soapy water scrub but it was no good. Water blaster is definitely the way to go.
Cleaning the radiator fins and the rest of the parts left attached to the wall is not so simple. If I do it again I think I will try to have a water proof drain curtain so I can wash out the radiator while I have the fan out.
This is what happens "When you play a country song backwards"
I watched this to see how to access the blower wheel since it was making a ticking noise that was driving me crazy. The left side bearing housing sits loose and is able to rattle around. I fixed the problem by jamming a piece of sponge in there.
Hi, I unscrew and removed the set screw but the blower wheel is still stuck to the motor and I am unable to pull it out. I have used screw driver as a crowbar to try force it out but it seems stuck to the motor. (I have already loosen the cooling coil). Any suggestions? Thanks.
How did you make out w this?
Mine leaked oil from the outside how can i fix it 😢 and its not throwing cool air
How do u close the shroud cover. It’s so rigid I’m afraid of breaking it…
I think the air handler is installed too close to the ceiling. The minimum is at least 5 inches from the ceiling.
Depends on manufacturer. Daikin calls for little less then 2 inches
Thanks for the video =)
Thanks dude
My blower wheel is missing 3 blades on one side ...causing it to be off balance..can I remove 3 blades from the other side to balance it again? The system works great but parts aren't made for this unit anymore
A lot of vertical floor fans use the same type of blower wheel… If you search, I would imagine you might be able to find a found that you can buy and harvest just the blower wheel out of it to replace yours. Just a thought. Also, if you know anyone with a 3-D printer, they might be able to 3-D print you a few fan blades that you can glue in with something like crazy glue or E-6000 (just make sure to give it at least three solid days of drying).
A company cleaned our blower wheel but it seemed that after they hosed it off they came back soon after, i.e. returned it without any really long drying period. How long in light spring sun (80 degrees in Florida) would it take for something like that to dry? I am afraid that maybe the guy who did it did not dry it thoroughly before returning it to the unit. He did turn the ac on right afterwards I think, at least briefly but don't really remember. So what happens if water and dampness was still clinging to that blower wheel? Mold?
How'd u get the blower wheel dirty again before you put it back?? 😂
Excellent video -- I got into one problem though :: my blower wheel doesn't have the screw that this model has. Right now, looking for a solution ... *sweat*
its probably just hard to see
I had to shine my phone light in there and then I saw it. On the right side.
cheers mate nice cold room now👍
Great video but I am stuck at the pulling drain out and down 😂
How the hell does it get that dirty..thats crazy..
Pets and children.
very useful video. thanks
Great video--succinct and excellent lighting to actually see what/how of things are being done/manipulated (SO rare!🏆). I've done this entire process 5 or 6 times. The cleaning process is not too bad, But I do have one dreaded moment: Getting drip tray reinstalled. Do you have any tips to offer a on doing this step? I can see guide area where white edge should slide up and into place, but I typically feel/hear crunching of metal trying to move in the drip tray. So I'll stop, and gently try to work it back into place. Always seems it takes me an hour to do this one thing--- I worry I'm damaging that area of the unit. I'd really appreciate it reply if you have a moment to provide such. (I live in North Florida👍.)
Hello Sherry
How are you doing today?
Any videos for the mr.cool unit? It's totally different from this unit
How did he remove the front cover?
Well, I was trying to see if you needed a bucket or something to drain the condensation in when you take the unit apart.
Tech cuts across the grass instead of walking down the driveway...FAIL!!!
J/K... excellent video; short and to the point! Thanks for all your useful videos!
Thankyou!!!
Thanks for wonderful tutorial....
good info
I have the same air conditioner but the wheel didn't come out 😒
These blowers are a complete hassle. They leak, and do not cool well The maintenance required to keep them up (in 14 units) is ridiculous.
Thank you for the information.
How do you get the screw back in the blower wheel? A magnetic tipped screw driver? Getting it out looks easy.
The screw dosen't come out just loosen it enough to release the wheel from the pin
The easiest way is not to remove it (it's a set screw). If you do, yes a magnetic screwdriver makes it simple.
was that a fiero in the garage??
I really wished you would have told people to watch or hold onto the rubber Bering on the blower wheel while popping the coil loose. That way you can see where it is sitting and know where it goes putting it back together.
Can we use deferent blower on the condenser can we put Mitsubishi on fridgiair
i wish i had house like that. but i never will. I enjoy watching it on youtube though
I hope the junk on the bottom of the coil got cleaned prior to reinstalling that blower wheel.
Is the blower wheel usually responsible for the misty smell?
Yes, that's mold that is being blown into your house. Sounds like it's time to get a professional cleaner in there.
