As a German, I can relate this. Just because of our History, we are not allowed to talk about immigration, races and are not even allowed to be proud on our nation and culture.
I am Hispanic and a fellow Hispanic classmate with a larger friend group where her friends make fun of her in a harmless way saying things like, "go back to other side of the border" and say that she is an illegal immigrant on the run and I'm just minding my own business trying my best to stay focused until I couldn't take it anymore I went up to one of her friends and said, "hey you know all the jokes you make about her they kinda apply to me and I would like you to stop" the guy said he had no idea I was Hispanic and respected my request and stopped. This doesn't normally happen in the society we live in but I'm glad to see people have empathy somewhere in them

That was the meme, but for real now, I also love Philosophy but my teacher in school sucks so I can never learn anything about it. The fact that Fry made a youtube video with philosophical questions made me so happy. It's not a very rentable subject to talk about on yt so i understand why he doesn't make more of these videos, but I almost like them more then the pvzh videos. Keep up the good work!

I sometimes get offended by sensitive jokes because if an unknown person tells them online, its hard to tell if they're being serious or just joking around. I know its less likely that they're being serious but thats still a posibility.
True. When I'm playing overwatch, sometimes I meet actual pieces of sh*t there, and yeah, I can't say I'm never offended. I'm talking here when the person is clearly joking.

Great video! I don’t recall you touching too much on the subject of people getting offended for other people. What do you think the solution to that is? Some people will assume that the joke will offend someone else, and will therefore be “triggered” by the joke themselves. Do you think these people want attention or a reason to be angry, or maybe they are genuinely trying to protect others that might not say anything themselves?
This might be controversial but I also feel like it depends on the joke tbh. In my opinion it really depends how the joke is used. There many late night shows about politics, where the political events of last week are summarised using humour. Jokes in this case serve as a great tool, because most people find such shows more entertaining than the regular news, which means humour can be used to spread and raise awareness for important but otherwise rather dry and boring topics. Typical comedians who perform on stages also use jokes as tool to raise indirectly awareness (obviously some do that and some only make jokes for entertainment and there is no political or social intention behind it) for social problems for example. In most such professional shows or events the jokes can be dark and about extremely sensitive topics, but most of the times jokes are still classy to some extent and offen disqualify such behaviour in real life as you said. Because the funny part for example about a joke of racial stereotypes is that it is so inappropriate. I actually never get offended about any jokes like that even if it is about something that I identify with. However, I have seen videos of people trying to be funny and obviously not being serious and just trying to entertain, but I personally found it actually quite inappropriate and almost disgusting. I have seen people for example make of the facial expressions and behaviour of mentally disabled people. But maybe the reason why that is an exception is because mentally disable people probably are not fully able to understand it and not able to respond to it. So this would raise the question, is it ok to make jokes about a topic that concerns people who are not able to understand it or respond to it. Is it ok to make jokes about people who are deaf and can't respond and the also is it ok to joke about dead people? I feel like there are a few examples where it might be problematic to apply the general moral rule you proposed that it is basically always ok to make jokes about sensitive topics. I am not sure about the answer myself, just thinking :-)
Well people also make fun of America for being statistically more obese than any other country. People are harmed by it, have to take medication, and many times family members die, but if you joke about it online, nobody cares. Obviously, it should be inappropriate, but it isn't. However, obese people understand that they're being attacked, so I think you're wrong in the aspect of not being able to understand or defend themselves.
@@dragonyte9021 Yes, i think you right that is very interesting. Maybe there is just a difference between making a classy joke paired with understanding about the topic and understanding and appreciation for the people you make jokes about and between almost basically laughing about other people's misery. So, I guess it depends how you joke. So you can joke about very sensitive topics as long as you do it in a "cool" way. Idk how else to describe it. On the other hand, dark humour is clearly describing an act where you joke without almost any understanding or appreciation, but dark humour often disqualifies making such comments or acting in that way in real way because as I mentioned earlier the fun part about most of those jokes is that it is so inappropriate to even say it. So, I guess dark humour shouldn't really necessary been seen as inappropriate but however there are still jokes that I find kind of inappropriate even if I am not offended it by myself, as mentioned earlier. Maybe that is just my Personal issue or maybe it really depends on how you make the joke.
@@peterkaroly8725 Also regarding the example you made about people making fun of disabled people's faces, that's not even a joke anymore. Nobody over the age of 6 should find that funny, and at that point it's just mocking and bullying them. There is no joke, punchline, stereotype etc. It's just flat out attacking mentally disabled people.

My family members died from holocaust and i don't know how it can be a chance to get a cheap laugh out of someone
So did mine. The point is, if someone jokes about the holocaust, it isn't saying that it wasn't a horrible thing. It's not cheapening the lives of those who were killed. It's the same as if a movie has a murder in it, it's not cheapening murder in order to entertain people. If you can find humor in horrible situations, it's a sign of emotional resiliency.
